186\186"Microscopically, extensive dystrophic changes and necroses of liver parenchyma are detected. In the nuclei of hepatocytes, basophilic or eosinophilic inclusion bodies are detected. The basophilic inclusion bodies are usually dense and occupy the entire nuclear inner space (arrow b), whereas the eosinophilic ones are round or irregularly shaped and surrounded by a light halo (arrow e). The diagnosis is based upon the typical gross lesions and the history records.A principal approach in IBH diagnostics is the histological investigation that helps to detect the intranuclear inclusion bodies. IBH should be distinguished mainly from IBD and chicken infectious anaemia (CIA). With regard to IBH prevention and control, the eggs of broiler parent flocks, where the disease is consecutively appearing in the progeny, should not be used for hatching. The access of wild birds should be prevented as they are potential carriers and distributors of the virus. The most important steps in IBH prevention ...
Ebola virus (EBOV) protein 24 antagonizes the host interferon (IFN) response by hijacking select nuclear importin-{alpha} isoforms. Thereby, it blocks STAT1-mediated IFN-{alpha}/{beta} and IFN-{gamma} synthesis. However, owing to the lack of importin-{alpha} knockout animal models in the past, their role in EBOV pathogenesis remained largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that importin-{alpha}7 is involved in the formation of EBOV inclusion bodies and replication. However, deletion of the gene encoding importin-{alpha}7 was not sufficient to increase survival rates among mice infected with EBOV.. ...
This chapter begins with an overview of Rudolf Virchows promulgation of cell theory, that the cell must be seen as the fundamental seat of disease pathology. Refinements in techniques of electron microscopy allowed advances in the understanding of viral disease pathogenesis, identification of new viral pathogens, and contributions to the emerging field of rapid viral diagnostics. Virchow enunciated the principles upon which medical research would be based for the next hundred years and more. This accomplishment in cellular pathology proved to be true for diseases caused by viruses, dependent on host cells for replication. The solution of aberrations of the compound microscope and the increased power of resolution brought about the need for improved methods of tissue preparation. Sections cut by hand without fixation or embedded and unstained were of uneven and inconsistent quality and provided little contrast of cellular elements. The chapter talks about the viral inclusion bodies such as Negri Bodies,
4 HE) The specimen consists of multiple ample fragments of small intestinal mucosa. The normal mucosal architecture is basically intact and the villi are long and delicate. A lymphoid patch is sampled, which shows some activated lymphocytes and a slight histiocytic infiltrate. In other areas, there is a slight increase in mononuclear cells in the lamina propria, some of which showed mild changes of activation. In addition, a slight increase in eosinophils is focally noted. However, there is no significant cryptitis. Occasional apoptotic bodies are noted, but these, in general, number less than 2/10 crypts. No viral inclusions are identified. The epithelium shows mild regenerative change, but Paneth cells are well represented.. Overall, the histopathologic changes are consistent with recent small bowel transplantation. Although there is some evidence of mild immune activation, it is insufficient for the diagnosis of acute rejection. ...
Slide labeled A consists of a portion of small bowel mucosa with glands consistent with Brunner s glands. The mucosal epithelium shows a villous configuration in some areas with variable congestion noted. The epithelium ranges from unremarkable in appearance to that of a more crowded aggregate of mucosal cells. The latter have an increased nuclear to cytoplasmic ratios, slightly hyperchromatic, but smooth contoured nuclei and moderately prominent nucleoli. Some irregularity in luminal shape is noted, consistent with tortuous glands. No invasion into the stroma is seen. In some regions this epithelium is associated with acute inflammation, whereas in others an acute inflammatory component is not seen. The underlying glands appear unremarkable. No evidence of viral inclusions is appreciated.. Slide labeled B1 consists of a combination of squamous mucosa and mucous epithelial cells. The former shows normal maturation with increased numbers of acute and chronic inflammatory cells and no evidence of ...
The histologic sections show an infiltrating lesion that is predominantly formed of gland like structures in sclerotic stroma. The glands are lined with highly atypical cells with nuclear pleomorphism and high N/C ratio. Some of the glands show bile plugs. The neoplasm infiltrates in the surrounding liver tissue and comes within 1 high power filed form the capsule. Neither Perineural nor vascular infiltration was identified. The remaining of the liver parenchyma shows portal tracts expansion by fibrous tissue, with extensive bridging fibrosis and formation of regenerative nodules. Most of the portal tracts contain lymphoplasmacytic inflammation. Interface activity and bile ductular proliferation are noted. The hepatic lobules contain mild mononuclear inflammatory cells. No apoptotic bodies, Mallory s hyaline, ballooned hepatocytes, viral inclusions, ground glass cells, granulomas, florid duct lesion, fibro-obliterative duct lesion, or cholestasis are identified. The PAS-D stain is negative for ...

Escherichia coli that has been genetically manipulated by recombinant DNA technology to synthesize human insulin polypeptides (A chain, B chain, or proinsulin) contains prominent cytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The amount of inclusion product within the cells corresponds to the quantity of chimeric protein formed by the bacteria. At peak production, the inclusion bodies may occupy as much as 20 percent of the Escherichia coli cellular volume. ...
A viroplasm is an inclusion body in a cell where viral replication and assembly occurs. They may be thought of as viral factories in the cell. There are many viroplasms in one infected cell, where they appear dense to electron microscopy. Very little is understood about the mechanism of viroplasm formation. A viroplasm is a perinuclear or a cytoplasmic large compartment where viral replication and assembly occurs. The viroplasm formation is caused by the interactions between the virus and the infected cell, where viral products and cell elements are confined. Virosomes are also called virus factories, and virus inclusions. Viroplasms have been reported in many unrelated groups of Eukaryotic viruses that replicate in cytoplasm, however, viroplasms from plant viruses have not been as studied as viroplasms from animal viruses. Viroplasms have been found in the cauliflower mosaic virus, rotavirus, vaccinia virus and the rice dwarf virus. These appear electron-dense under an electron microscope ...
Five further cases of cytomegalovims (CMV) mononucleosis in previously healthy individuals are reported. This raises the total number of such patients seen by the authors to 18, all but one of whom were adults. A significant rise of complement-fixing antibodies to CMV was found during the disease. Cytomegalovirus was isolated from the urine of four patients. The disease was characterized by protracted fever, liver involvement, absence of pharyngitis and lymph node enlargement, hematologic changes similar to those seen in infectious mononucleosis, and a negative finding on the heterophil-agglutination test. A mixed cryoimmunoglobulinemia and other immunologic aberrations were found in three cases and intranuclear inclusion-bearing cells in the urine in three cases.. Virologic and clinical follow-up studies have been performed in patients of the present as well as of previous series. Cytomegalovirus is often excreted in the urine for 1 to 2 years after the illness. Hepatosplenomegaly was found in ...
As a result of the enlarging pool of unvaccinated children and young adults, there has been an increase in serious measles pneumonitis in our areas. We recently examined autopsy and/or lung biopsy material from five children with fatal measles pneumonitis. Two patients were immunocompromised because of either prematurity or acute leukemia and died 13-16 days following onset of symptoms. Both had classic giant cell pneumonitis, with readily demonstrable intranuclear inclusions. Three other children without known immunocompromise had a more prolonged course. The lungs of these patients lacked the classic pattern and displayed instead a spectrum of less specific findings ranging from organizing diffuse alveolar damage to interstitial pneumonia with giant cells, but without viral inclusions. An accompanying necrotizing bronchiolitis was also present. Electron microscopy and/or detection of elevated measles-specific immunoglobulin M was necessary to confirm the diagnosis in these apparently immunocompetent

TY - JOUR. T1 - Measles virus and the nervous system. AU - Griffin, Diane. PY - 2014. Y1 - 2014. N2 - Measles is a highly contagious viral disease caused by an enveloped negative-strand RNA virus in the Paramyxovirus family. Measles is associated with three different types of neurologic complications: acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), measles inclusion body encephalitis (MIBE), and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). ADEM is a monophasic autoimmune demyelinating disease that has an incidence of 1:1000 and occurs primarily in children over the age of 4 years. Disease onset is acute and usually occurs within days to weeks after measles. Pathology is characterized by perivenular inflammation and demyelination. MIBE is due to progressive measles virus infection of the nervous system and occurs in immune-compromised individuals who are unable to clear virus after infection. Disease onset is subacute and usually fatal. Pathology shows nuclear and cytoplasmic viral inclusion bodies ...

From May-Hegglin Anomaly, eMedicine, 2008. Figure 6 2000x blood smear of a MHA patient demonstrating a typical giant platelet with ill defined granulation. A normal sized platelet is also seen here. The cytoplasmic inclusion body represents a Dohle body.. A cell blood count is essential in starting a workup in these patients. The platelet count is decreased, usually between 40,000-80,000mm3. The platelets are enlarged up to 15mm3 in diameter, with normal morphology. [4] Evaluation at the electron microscopy level reveals normal cell organelles with an increased amount of disorganized microtubuli.. The Wright-stained peripheral blood smear shows cytoplasmic inclusion bodies, most dominant in the neutrophils, but some are present in the eosinphils, monocytes, and basophils.. The inclusions are up to 5µm in size, they are spindle shaped, pale, blue-staining bodies that consist of ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, and microfilaments. [4] The inclusions are similar to Döhle bodies and are found in ...
Some of these tumours showed a solid growth pattern of polygonal cells with eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. Histochemically, these cells were periodic acid-Schiff-negative. Immunohistochemically, vimentin and neuron-specific enolase were positive. Epithelial membrane antigen was focally and weakly positive and p53 was positive in 60% of tumoral cells.. Electron microscopy revealed intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies consisting of whorled intermediate filaments. Based on histological and immunohistochemical findings, the patient was diagnosed as having pulmonary large cell carcinoma with rhabdoid phenotype. Because of its aggressive clinical course, early diagnosis and decision on therapy is very important for this disease.. ...
Discussion:. Human adenovirus is a linear, non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus that typically causes mild respiratory, gastrointestinal, and conjunctival illnesses in healthy persons. In kidney transplant recipients, urinary tract infection is the most frequently reported manifestation. The most frequent signs and symptoms at presentation include dysuria, fever, hematuria, sterile pyuria and acute kidney injury.. A renal allograft biopsy is essential to differentiate adenoviral nephritis from that of acute rejection or other pathology. Typical light microscopic findings in adenovirus nephropathy include tubular cell necrosis (with tubular basement membrane rupture) associated with severe interstitial inflammation (sometimes with granuloma formation), focal interstitial hemorrhage and viral cytopathic changes including peripheral condensed chromatin, basophilic nuclear inclusions and nuclear enlargement. In some cases such as ours, viral inclusions are not identified, presumably because of ...
In transgenic animal models, humoral immunity directed against the β-amyloid peptide (Aβ), which is deposited in the brains of AD patients, can reduce Aβ plaques and restore memory. However, initial clinical trials using active immunization with Aβ1-42 (plus adjuvant) had to be stopped as a subset of patients developed meningoencephalitis, likely due to cytotoxic T cell reactions against Aβ. Previously, we demonstrated that retrovirus-like particles displaying on their surface repetitive arrays of self and foreign Ags can serve as potent immunogens. In this study, we generated retrovirus-like particles that display the 15 N-terminal residues of human Aβ (lacking known T cell epitopes) fused to the transmembrane domain of platelet-derived growth factor receptor (Aβ retroparticles). Western blot analysis, ELISA, and immunogold electron microscopy revealed efficient incorporation of the fusion proteins into the particle membrane. Without the use of adjuvants, single immunization of WT mice ...

A subterranean well completion has a tubular structure in which a remote controlled robot is permanently disposed. The robot is self-propelled, programmable, receives instructions from and communicates data to the surface, and is adapted to receive power from a downhole source and perform a variety of well tasks such as, for example, positioning valves and other well tools and sensing the values of predetermined downhole parameters and relaying the sensed information to the surface. The robot, which is operable without physical intervention through the tubular structure to the robot, propels itself to a location in the tubular structure at which a desired well task is to be performed, performs the task and then parks itself in the tubular structure until another well task is to be performed by the robot.

Inclusion body disease (IBD) in the boid family of snakes, particularly Boa constrictor, has been recognized since the mid-1970s. It is so named because of the characteristic intracytoplasmic inclusions which are observed in clinical examinations in epidermal cells, oral mucosal epithelial cells, visceral epithelial cells, and neurons. In the 1970s and 1980s, the disease was most commonly observed in Burmese pythons, Python bivittatus. From the 1980s till the present day, it has been most commonly observed in boa constrictors from South America. All boid snakes should be considered susceptible to the disease. Many zoos quarantine boas specifically as a result of this high risk before introducing them into their permanent collections and (breeding) programs. While the disease has not been identified in non-boid snakes, it is yet unknown whether non-boid snakes harbour the virus. The primary host of this virus has not yet been identified, but mites are thought to be primary hosts or at least a ...

Inclusion body hepatitis caused by different fowl aviadenovirus (FAdV) serotypes has been described in several countries in recent years. In Spain, from the spring of 2011 to 2013, an increased number of outbreaks in broiler and broiler breeder flocks from different regions occurred. The objectives of the present work were to carry out the molecular characterization of FAdV strains from Spanish inclusion body hepatitis cases and to study the pathogenicity and viral dynamics of these strains in specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens. A total of 52 inclusion body hepatitis clinical cases, including 45 from broiler farms and seven from broiler breeder farms, were analysed by conventional polymerase chain reaction and sequencing targeting the FAdV hexon gene. From these, 37 strains were classified as FAdV type 8b, while the remaining 15 were classified as FAdV types 11 (n = 10), 2 (n = 4) and 8a (n = 1). In addition, two different FAdVs belonging to the genotypes 8b and 11 were used for experimental ...
Host range, Growth characteristics- (i) Animals : All mammals are susceptible to rabies infection. Cattle, cats, foxes are highly susceptible. Humans and dogs occupy an intermediate position. Pups are more susceptible than adult dogs. Experimentally infection can be done on mice, which develop encephalitis and die with in 5-30 days. The rabies virus isolated from natural human or animal infection is called street virus. Following inoculation by any route, it cause fatal encephalitis in laboratory animals. Negri bodies (intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies) demonstrated in the brain of dying animals. After serial intracerebral passages in rabbits, the virus undergoes certain changes and becomes fixed virus, which is more neurotropic, and less infective by other routes. The incubation period is only 6-7 days and fatal encephalitis occurs, Negri bodies is not demonstrable. It produces paralytic rather than furious symptoms. The fixed virus is used for vaccine production. (ii) Chick embryos : The usual ...
An analysis is made of the image produced in the scanning acoustic microscope with a cylindrical lens by a cylindrical inclusion in an elastic half-space. The theory is developed in the Rayleigh approximation in which the characteristic wavelengths in the solid are large relative to the diameter of the cylinder, and when scattered waves can be expressed by the leading terms in a multipole expansion concentrated on the axis of the cylinder. A formula is derived for the acoustic contrast when the inclusion is rigid (but movable) and in fully lubricated contact with the solid. The results are illustrated by consideration of an inclusion in aluminium with water as the coupling fluid. The contrast decreases rapidly when the depth of the inclusion within the solid exceeds the Rayleigh wavelength, in accordance with current views concerning the importance of these waves in subsurface imaging. ...
