Intravesical administration of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is a cornerstone of adjuvant treatment for low-grade urothelial carcinoma. Complications from administration are relatively rare and generally evident within one month. Systemic BCG infections are typically diagnosed within 14 days post BCG administration; however, cases have been reported of infections being diagnosed as late as 17 years after treatment. Here, we describe the unusual case of a 55-year-old immunocompetent male who was diagnosed with disseminated BCG infection 3 years after initial adjuvant treatment for urothelial carcinoma. Résumé Ladministration intravésicale de Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) est la pierre angulaire du traitement adjuvant du carcinome urothéliales de faible teneur. Les complications de ladministration sont relativement rares et généralement évidentes dans un délai dun mois. Les infections systémiques du BCG sont généralement diagnostiquées dans les 14 jours après ladministration du BCG;
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is common in immunocompetent patients in intensive care units (ICUs). However, whether CMV infection or CMV reactivation contributes to mortality of immunocompetent patients remains unclear. A literature search was conducted for relevant studies published before May 30, 2016. Studies reporting on CMV infection in immunocompetent patients in ICUs and containing 2 × 2 tables on CMV results and all-cause mortality were included. Eighteen studies involving 2398 immunocompetent patients admitted to ICUs were included in the meta-analysis. The overall rate of CMV infection was 27% (95%CI 22-34%, I2 = 89%, n = 2398) and the CMV reactivation was 31% (95%CI 24-39%, I2 = 74%, n = 666). The odds ratio (OR) for all-cause mortality among patients with CMV infection, compared with those without infection, was 2.16 (95%CI 1.70-2.74, I2 = 10%, n = 2239). Moreover, upon exclusion of studies in which antiviral treatment was possibly or definitely provided to some patients, the association
Chickenpox (varicella) remains a common and highly contagious childhood illness among immunocompetent children. Although generally self-limiting, the infection usually presents with an itchy vesicular rash over the trunk and face, fever, and mild systemic upset. Disease complications include secondary bacterial infection of cutaneous lesions, encephalitis, cerebella ataxia, pneumonia, and otitis media. The economic burden is thought to come from the time taken off work by the childs caregiver.. All three papers were randomised double blind placebo controlled trials carried out in the USA. Between them they looked at 988 patients aged between 2 and 18 years with either clinical of laboratory diagnoses of varicella.. Although the number of days to no new lesions and number of days to reduction of fever were reduced by one day in the acyclovir groups, the findings that one could consider to be more clinically relevant were less definite.. Reported adverse effects were similar in both groups and ...

Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) is the most common fungal infection of the central nervous system and has high morbidity and mortality. Almost studies about prognostic factors have largely focused on the immunocompromised population rather than immunocompetent patients. So that we sought to conduct a retrospective study to determine prognostic factors which predict the outcomes in immunocompetent patients with CM. We retrospectively collected and analyzed the demographic and clinical data of 76 apparently immunocompetent patients with cryptococcal meningitis from January 2003 to June 2019 in China. The clinical outcome was graded by the Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) at discharge, and patients were divided into good (score of 5) and unfavorable (score of 1-4) outcome groups, potential prognostic factors were analyzed. Non-parametric test confirmed that unfavorable outcome was associated with lower glucose level of CSF(P = 0.001), and Pearsons χ2 analysis confirmed that unfavorable outcome was associated
The stress-linked version of the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis has been proposed to account for inconsistencies in relationships between testosterone and immune response. The model has received some support from studies demonstrating roles of stress hormones in relationships between testosterone, immune function and secondary sexual ornamentation. Such work, however, has relied on artificial elevation of testosterone so may not reflect relationships in natural populations. We created human male facial stimuli on the basis of naturally co-occurring levels of salivary testosterone and the stress hormone cortisol. In Study 1 we tested female preferences for male faces with cues to combinations of the hormones across the menstrual cycle, and in Study 2 we tested perceptions of health and dominance in a novel set of facial stimuli. Females preferred cues to low cortisol, a preference that was strongest during the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle. The effects of cortisol on attractiveness ...
Organ transplant recipients receiving immunosuppression show a dramatically increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer. The cause of this increase is not known. We report that the rate of loss of heterozygosity (at all the loci we examined) was significantly lower in tumours from immunosuppressed individuals than in tumours from immunocompetent subjects [20 out of 148 (14%) vs 157 out of 428 (37%); P| 0.0001]. These results suggest that tumours in immunosuppressed individuals have a different molecular pathogenesis.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is generally asymptomatic in immunocompetent children and adults, but is a potentially significant disease in immunocompromised hosts, neonates, and pregnant females. The approach to laboratory testing depends upon whether the patient is immunocompetent or immunocompromised. Serology is used in immunocompetent persons, but is not helpful in immunocompromised patients. For these patients, PCR and culture (gold standard) are more helpful.
A principal limitation of HSC transplantation remains the safe and facile liberation of the niche space to accept the donor graft. Our results establish that treatment of adult immunocompetent mice with two biologic agents, opsonizing anti-c-Kit antibodies and CD47 antagonists, leads to extensive depletion of HSC and progenitor cells and enables exogenous congenic HSCs to robustly engraft. Although previous studies have attempted to use ACK2 in immunocompetent recipients, it has not been possible without low-dose radiation. Combination of 300 cGy and 2 mg of ACK2 resulted in HSC chimerism (20), similar to our protocol of using ACK2 and CD47 antagonism. When additionally combined with transient depleting anti-lymphocyte antibodies, this regimen permitted HSC allotransplantation between mHC-mismatched donor/recipient pairs, the most common transplant scenario encountered clinically. The extension of this approach to humans could obviate the need for nonspecific toxic therapies that are the current ...
Adult human marrow-derived MSCs have the unique capacity to support tissue regeneration and secrete soluble mediators that can immunomodulate inflammation. Intravenously introduced hMSCs localize in the lung before dispersing into the peripheral tissues and seemingly home to injured tissue (2, 36). Asthma is an inflammatory airway disease hallmarked by T cell hyperreactivity, scarring, and remodeling. Since hMSCs have the capacity to decrease and/or reverse scarring as well as suppress T cell activity, we investigated the potential of using hMSCs to decrease airway inflammation in the murine ovalbumin model of chronic asthma. Our data show that hMSCs are well-tolerated in immunocompetent murine models of asthma and that hMSC treatment can favorably change the outcome of asthma inflammation without pathology associated with cross-species application. The saline-challenged mice with and without hMSCs had no change in pathology associated with hMSCs, and there was a lack of induced acute phase ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Endogenous expression of transforming growth factor β1 inhibits growth and tumorigenicity and enhances fas-mediated apoptosis in a murine high- grade glioma model. AU - Ashley, David M.. AU - Kong, Feng M.. AU - Bigner, Darell D.. AU - Hale, Laura P.. PY - 1998/1/15. Y1 - 1998/1/15. N2 - It has been hypothesized that transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) may prevent immune-mediated glioma cell elimination; however, previous work has also indicated that increased TGF-β may lead to reduced proliferation, induction of apoptosis, and enhancement of Fas-induced apoptosis. We have investigated the role of TGF-β in the progression of malignant glioma using an immunocompetent murine model. SMA 560 malignant glioma cells were stably transfected with constructs that resulted in over- or underproduction of active TGF-β1. Using these cell lines, we have shown that (a) TGF-β1 inhibits induction of antitumor cytotoxicity when the tumor cells are given s.c. but not when they are given ...
119 children with recurrent respiratory infections were investigated for immunocompetence. They were divided into two groups. The first, group A, comprised children who had had predominantly upper respiratory infections. Group B comprised those who had had repeated pneumonia in addition. The groups were comparable for gender and age (mean 4.2 years). All the children had reduced neutrophil chemotaxis, reduced neutrophil fungicidal capacity, and perhaps reduced T-cell percentages. Group B children had, in addition to the above, decreased neutrophil bactericidal capacity and a more marked depression of neutrophil chemotaxis. In both groups, some children had reduced immunoglobulin concentrations while others had either normal or increased concentrations. Serum complement, neutrophil iodination, and mitogen-induced lymphocyte transformation were comparable with adult controls in both groups.. ...

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of naked neck (,I,Na,/I,) gene, sex and their interaction on immunocompetence of chickens. Three genotypes (,I,NaNa, Nana,/I, and ,I,nana,/I,) were the offspring of heterozygous naked neck (,I,Nana,/I,) Fayoumi (Egyptian breed) males and females. They were reared under similar environmental, managerial and hygienic conditions. The present results showed that the ,I,NaNa,/I, birds had lower mortality rate as compared to ,I,Nana,/I, and ,I,nana,/I, counterparts. The ,I,NaNa,/I, genotype had significantly heavier 8wk-body weight and higher relative weights of bursa, spleen, heart and liver compared to nana sibs. With respect to cutaneous basophilic hypersensitivity (CBH) response, the presence of ,I,Na,/I, gene in a double state significantly increased dermal swelling response to phytohemagglutinin-P (PHA-P) injection compared to nana counterparts. The ,I,Nana,/I, genotype was intermediated in the most cases. Dermal swelling response to PHA-P, ...
Despite their protective role against Mtb, IFNγ+CD4+ T cells have been implicated in TB pathogenesis by a number of studies. This section presents the clinical and experimental findings demonstrating the involvement of IFNγ+CD4+ T cells in TB pathogenesis. Notably, the pathological character of IFNγ+CD4+ T cells is predominantly manifested in a subset of Mtb-infected immunocompetent adults and TB-IRIS patients, wherein these cells exhibit excessive responsiveness to mycobacterial antigens [3]. In immunocompetent adults, active TB develops from the reactivation of latent infection and primarily affects lung tissue. An overly intense IFNγ+CD4+ T cell response is the most important immunological parameter distinguishing the active disease from latent infection in these people [27]. On the contrary, the incompetence of host immune system to contain the bacilli is responsible for TB pathogenesis in young children and immunodeficient people [3].. Classical evidence supporting the pathological role ...
The combination of radiotherapy and immunotherapy may generate synergistic anti-tumor host immune responses and promote abscopal effects. Spatial fractionation of a radiation dose has been found to promote unique physiological responses of tumors, which might promote synergy with immunotherapy. To determine whether spatial fractionation may augment immune activity, whole-tumor or spatial fractionation grid radiation treatment (GRID) alone or in combination with antibodies against immune checkpoints PD1 and CTLA-4 were tested in an immunocompetent mouse model using a triple negative breast tumor (4T1). Tumor growth delay, immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry were used to characterize the effects of each treatment type. Whole-beam radiation with immune checkpoint inhibition significantly restrained tumor growth in the irradiated tumor, but not abscopal tumors, compared to either of these treatments alone. In mice that received spatially fractionated irradiation, evidence of abscopal immune ...
Purpose: Anti-proliferative, antiviral, and immunomodulatory activities of endogenous type I interferons (IFN1) prompt the design of recombinant IFN1 for therapeutic purposes. However, most of designed interferons exhibited suboptimal therapeutic efficacies against solid tumors. Here we report evaluation of the in vitro and in vivo anti-tumorigenic activities of a novel recombinant interferon termed sIFN-I. Experimental Design: We compared primary and tertiary structures of sIFN-I with its parental human IFNα-2b, as well as affinities of these ligands for IFN1 receptor chains and pharmacokinetics. These IFN1 species were also compared for their ability to induce JAK-STAT signaling and expression of the IFN1-stimulated genes and to elicit anti-tumorigenic effects. Effects of sIFN-I on tumor angiogenesis and immune infiltration were also tested in transplanted and genetically engineered immunocompetent mouse models. Results: sIFN-I displayed greater affinity for IFNAR1 (over IFNAR2) chain of the ...
Established quantitative relationships between dose, plasma concentrations and response [pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PKPD) models] have a high potential in improving therapeutic indices of anticancer drug therapy and in increasing drug development efficiency. PKPD modelling is a helpful tool for characterising and understanding schedule dependence. The aim of this thesis was to develop PKPD models of anticancer drugs for tumour effects and haematological toxicity, which is the most frequent dose-limiting toxicity.. PK and haematological toxicity after several schedules were studied in rats and semi-physiological PKPD models for the whole time course of myelosuppression were developed from animal and patient data. The possibility to implant hollow fibres filled with tumour cells in immunocompetent rats was investigated for simultaneous assessment of PK, tumour response and haematological toxicity. The immune system influences the fate of developing cancers by not only functioning as a tumour promoter that facilitates cellular transformation, promotes tumour growth and sculpts tumour cell immunogenicity, but also as an extrinsic tumour suppressor that either destroys developing tumours or restrains their expansion. Yet, clinically apparent cancers still arise in immunocompetent individuals in part as a consequence of cancer-induced immunosuppression. In many individuals, immunosuppression is mediated by cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4) and programmed death-1 (PD-1), two immunomodulatory receptors expressed on T cells. Monoclonal-antibody-based therapies targeting CTLA-4 and/or PD-1 (checkpoint blockade) have yielded significant clinical benefits-including durable responses--to patients with different malignancies. However, little is known about the identity of the tumour antigens that function as the targets of T cells activated by checkpoint blockade immunotherapy and ...
Her laboratory studies are summarized in . Thereafter, HSV-1 may be reactivated and can cause usually self-limiting orolabial lesions in immunocompetent individuals. Infectious virus is no longer detected in tissues about 2 weeks after infection, but some viruses establish latency by maintaining their genomes in neurons of sensory ganglia. Critical scientific advances over the past decades have enhanced our understanding of the natural history and pathogenesis of HSV, and provide the framework for the development of novel prevention and treatment strategies. 25. Progression of her disease prior to referral appears to contribute to the administered treatment inefficacy. Other features of the Mayo system include type-specific genotypic identification of HSV and the potential for determination of drug resistance by DNA sequencing.. The HSV antibodies in plasma cannot distinguish between a primary and secondary infection or between peripheral and CNS infections (25). The HSV antibodies in plasma ...

Discussion. Infections occur through inhalation of yeast-like organisms which enter smaller respiratory passages and then remain dormant depending on the host reaction.6 The pigeon appears to be the chief vector for the distribution and maintenance of Cryptococcus neoformans. The organism is usually found in debris in pigeon roosts or other bird nests.7 Direct inoculation through the skin may also occur.5 There are two types of Cryptococcus neoformans infections, but the manifestation depends on the host response rather than the strain of the organism,8 with infection rarely occurring in immuno-competent hosts.9 The first type occurs in immuno-compromised individuals where the infection spreads rapidly to involve most organ systems, especially the central nervous system (CNS). The second occurs in immuno-competent individuals where the bodys natural defence mechanism prevents systemic disease. In these cases organisms can be disseminated haematogenously to distal sites, where re-activation can ...

Viral infections in the normal host are usually self-limited as the innate and acquired immune systems mount successful antiviral responses. However, in some instances, apparently immunocompetent persons manifest infections with viruses that would otherwise be observed only in severely immunocompromised hosts. For example, cases of herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis, esophagitis orgastritis, cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis, adenovirus hepatitis or pneumonitis, recurrent or persistent skin infections caused by HSV or varicella zoster virus (VZV), severe warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), recurrent respiratory papillomatosis caused by HPV, severe influenza or respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia, and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) due to JC polyomavirus have been described in apparently immunocompetent patients. While a variety of case reports have described severe viral infections in immunocompetent hosts, the pathogenesis of the vast majority of these cases is not ...

This service offered by NANBIOSIS allows a path for analysis of potential therapeutic agents to be used in glioblastoma. It is a preliminary effectiveness assessment of new therapeutic agents in an immunocompetent preclinical glioblastoma model. It includes in vitro effects over GL261 cultured cells (e.g. EC50 calculation), target validation (e.g. protein kinase CK2 inhibition when using CK2 inhibitors), preliminary studies of 1-month toxicity and maximum tolerated doses, as well as complete in vivostudies for adjusting doses and periodicity for administration. These would allow estimation of classical survival (endpoint validation) and the evaluation of biomarkers of therapy response, either by MRI (RANO, RECIST) or by surrogate biomarkers detected by magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging. For this, an immunocompetent murine model of glioblastoma will be used( GL261 tumorsgrowing in C57BL/6background).. ...

A 62-year-old male with past medical history of benign prostatic hyperplasia presented to the emergency department with complaints of decreased urinary flow, inability to fully empty his bladder, and gross hematuria. Physical examination was unremarkable. Urinalysis revealed large amount of blood and more than 700 white blood cells suggesting a urinary tract infection. Urine culture grew group D |i|Salmonella|/i| greater than 100,000 colony-forming units per mL. He was prescribed 6 weeks of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and had resolution of symptoms. Retrospectively, he reported a 3-day history of watery diarrhea about a week prior to onset of urinary symptoms that was presumed to be the hematogenous source in this case. Urinary tract infection from nontyphoidal |i|Salmonella|/i| (NTS) is rare and is usually associated with immunosuppression, chronic diseases, such as diabetes or structural abnormalities of the genitourinary tract. Genitourinary tract abnormalities previously reported in the
Introduction: Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is a severe respiratory infection characterized by pulmonary cavities and increased levels of antibodies to Aspergillus specie. We describe 30 nonimmunocompromised patients with CPA.. Materials and methods: Multidisciplinary working group devoted to epidemiological surveillance of invasive aspergillosis was created in our hospital in January 2000. Among 1545 alerts, 30 cases of CPA in nonimmunocompromised patients were identified. In a retrospective study, we investigated characteristics of patients with CPA.. Results: 30 patients were identified. Their mean age was 69.2 years (interquartile range (IQR) 43.8 - 83.9 years) and 19 (63%) of the patients were men. 19 (63%) of patients had a smoking , 10 pack-years, 23 patients (77%) had COPD, 6 patients in GOLD stage IV and 8 patients in GOLD stage III. All had detectable Aspergillus spp precipitins and inflammatory markers. Aspergillus spp was isolated in respiratory specimens of 16 (53%) ...

Because most immunocompetent individuals do not suffer from CMV disease during either primary or recurrent infections, the immune system must be effective in controlling replication. However, this simplistic assumption masks a level of complexity between the virus and host that is still being unravelled. The B cell response to CMV is largely dominated by an anti-glycoprotein B cell response, and most of the neutralising antibodies are also directed against this protein.14, 15 In contrast, the cytotoxic T cell (CD8) response is almost exclusively directed against the pp65 (UL83) protein and epitopes have been mapped for human major histocompatibility complex (HLA) types A*0201, B*0701, B*0801, and B*3501 (table 1).16, 17 The frequency of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) against CMV in immunocompetent individuals has been estimated to be 1/5000 by classic endpoint dilution chromium release assays but, using more recently developed HLA class I tetramer technology, this frequency may be much ...

We have described the clinical, MR imaging, and pathologic findings in two cases of primary sellar lymphoma, an exceedingly rare entity, in immunocompetent individuals. Neither patient had systemic lymphoma or other brain lesions. A preoperative presumptive diagnosis of pituitary adenoma had been made in both cases, on the basis of the patients presentation and imaging findings. However, pathologic evaluation of the surgical specimens in both cases revealed that the masses represented B-cell lymphoma of the pituitary.. Primary CNS lymphoma is an uncommon neoplasm, historically representing approximately 1% of primary brain tumors (1). However, its incidence has more than tripled in the United States and United Kingdom since the early 1980s (1). Primary CNS lymphoma represents approximately 3% of intracranial neoplasms in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndromes, but the incidence in immunocompetent patients has been increasing, for uncertain reasons (1, 2). The vast majority of CNS ...
Animal models mimicking human diseases have been used extensively to study the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases and the efficacy of potential therapeutics. They are, however, limited with regard to their similarity to the human disease and cannot be used if the antagonist and its cognate receptor require high similarity in structure or binding. Here, we examine the induction of oxazolone-mediated features of atopic dermatitis (AD) in NOD-scid IL2R \(γ^{null}\) mice engrafted with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The mice developed the same symptoms as immunocompetent BALB/c mice. Histological alterations induced by oxazolone were characterized by keratosis, epithelial hyperplasia and influx of inflammatory cells into the dermis and epidermis. The cellular infiltrate was identified as human leukocytes, with T cells being the major constituent. In addition, oxazolone increased human serum IgE levels. The response, however, required the engraftment of PBMC derived from patients ...
We provide evidence to support the hypothesis, using statistical and mathematical modelling, that the immune response of wild rabbits to T. retortaeformis develops with cumulative exposure to the infection challenge but this alone is insufficient to account for the patterns observed. In addition, we found evidence consistent with immunocompetence depending on both the current season and the month in which the host was born. By immunocompetence, we specifically mean the relative ability of a host to resist or clear infection conditionally on its history of exposure. The biological validity of the best-fit model is confirmed not only by the good agreement between the data and fitted host age-parasite intensity curves but also by the concordance between our independent biological expectations, based on the published literature, and the fitted values of parameters, such as the parasite mortality rate and seasonal variation in the force of infection. Intriguingly, cohort-specific variables are ...
Skin cancers induced in mice by UV radiation often exhibit a regressor phenotype. In order to determine how tumors escape the immune defenses of the normal immunocompetent host, we sought to isolate progressor variants from a UV radiation-induced C3H mouse regressor fibrosarcoma cell line, UV-2240, by transfection with an activated Ha-ras oncogene. A contransfection protocol using pSV2-neo DNA, which confers resistance to the antibiotic G418, was used to select transfected cells. Injection of Ha-ras-transfected UV-2240 cells s.c. into immunocompetent C3H mice produced tumors in four of 36 animals. In contrast, UV-2240 cells transfected with pSV2-neo DNA alone or mock transfected with CaPO4 did not produce tumors in normal C3H mice. DNAs from cell lines established from Ha-ras-induced tumors contained unique Ha-ras sequences in addition to those sequences endogenous to UV-2240 cells. However, the Ha-ras-induced progressor variants did not overexpress the Mr 21,000 protein. The Ha-ras-induced ...
Human adenovirus (HAdV) serotype 14 is rarely identified. However, an emerging variant, termed HAdV-14p1, recently has been described in the United States in association with outbreaks of acute respiratory disease with high rates of illness and death. We retrospectively analyzed specimens confirmed positive for HAdV by immunofluorescence, virus culture, or real-time PCR during July 1, 2009-July 31, 2010, and describe 9 cases of HAdV-14p1 infection with characteristic mutations in the fiber and E1A genes that are phylogenetically indistinguishable from the viruses previously detected in the United States. Three patients died; 2 were immunocompromised, and 1 was an immunocompetent adult. We propose that surveillance should be increased for HAdV-14p1 and recommend that this virus be considered in the differential diagnosis of sudden-onset acute respiratory disease, particularly fatal infections, for which an etiology is not clear.
Candida infection of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is rare in the immunocompetent individual. In immunocompromised patients, it frequently involves the oesophagus, but extra-oesophageal involvement is uncommon. We report a case of primary and isolated gastroduodenal candidiasis. Upper GI endoscopy with biopsy of gastric mucosa was crucial for making the diagnosis. The patient showed transient improvement after therapy with fluconazole.. ...
Some members of the physiological human microbiome occasionally cause life-threatening disease even in immunocompetent individuals. A prime example of such a commensal pathogen is Neisseria meningitidis, which normally resides in the human nasopharynx but is also a leading cause of sepsis and epidemic meningitis. Using N. meningitidis as model organism, we tested the hypothesis that virulence of commensal pathogens is a consequence of within host evolution and selection of invasive variants due to mutations at contingency genes, a mechanism called phase variation. In line with the hypothesis that phase variation evolved as an adaptation to colonize diverse hosts, computational comparisons of all 27 to date completely sequenced and annotated meningococcal genomes retrieved from public databases showed that contingency genes are indeed enriched for genes involved in host interactions. To assess within-host genetic changes in meningococci, we further used ultra-deep whole-genome sequencing of ...

Additionally, in animal models, mature T cell precursors present in the PBSC can promote return of immunocompetence and possibly antitumor effects. Preliminary results show EPOCH II to have a response rate of 90 percent with 66 percent complete. Patients were able to tolerate 100 percent of the planned dose intensity. IL-2 treatment acutely increased the CD4 cells, all within the CD4RO subset, and increased NK and LAK cells. However, this effect was not sustained after discontinuation of IL-2, and when long-term immunoreconstitution is compared between the IL-2 and non-IL-2 groups, there was no difference.. In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated lymphomas, we are testing the efficacy and toxicity of EPOCH chemotherapy followed by interleukin 12 (IL-12). IL-12 is a TH1 cytokine that can stimulate conversions of a TH2 to TH1 phenotype in vitro. Furthermore, it has antitumor activity in murine models.. We are also investigating the effect of chemotherapy on HIV plasma viral load and CD4 ...
A serious neurologic complication of VZV reactivation, VZV CNS vasculopathy may occur in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients.5 The incidence and prevalence of VZV vasculopathy in the general population is not known, with data limited to case reports.6 The largest case series found that 10% of patients were HIV positive.6. With reactivation, VZV spreads centripetally from the dorsal root ganglia along the axon, with transmural migration to blood vessels of the CNS.7 Infection and inflammation of the vessels can result in ischemic stroke by narrowing the arterial lumen or inducing arterial thrombosis.8. Patients frequently present with one or more of focal neurologic deficits, subacute onset of headache or changes in mental status. In a case series of 30 patients with VZV CNS vasculopathy, only 63% had rash at the time of diagnosis.6 In those with rash at any time during their illness, the mean time from onset of rash to the development of symptoms was 4.1 months.6 The absence of ...

While its clear that Yahweh and Thor are different beings, it is also because of Thors limitations that we can falsify the claim that Thor is responsible for creating the universe. When we seek to answer the question of the universes beginning, we are trying to explain the origin of all material existence, of space itself, and of time. Why there is space-time and matter are what needs explaining. However, Thor cannot be the explanation for all matter space and time since Thor himself is material, is subject to time, and has a beginning. He sits within a spacial dimension, as the loss of his hammer (hidden eight leagues deep in the earth) indicates. Therefore, Thor cannot be the explanation of the universe for Thor, if he exists, is part of the universe that needs explaining! The atheists claim is clearly falsifiable using the basic rules of logic. Any attempt to change Thors attributes b the atheist would mean that we are no longer talking about Thor, just as any attempt by my spouse to ...
