Background Faecal occult blood testing (FOBT) in population screening has proved to be effective in reducing mortality from colorectal cancer. In Italy a latex agglutination FOBT has been adopted for a single-sample screening programme. The aim of this study was to examine the performance of FOBTs in the Florence screening programme over several seasons to evaluate the impact of variations in ambient temperature on the performance of the screening test.. Methods Measured haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations were aggregated into seasons with their average ambient temperature (AAT). Using logistic regression, the AAT over the period preceding the test measurement was analysed. This period included the time between faecal sampling and return of the test sample (mean 7 days) and the time in the laboratory refrigerator before analysis (mean 4 days). The AAT from days 5-11 before analysis of the test sample was considered a determinant of test positivity. The Kruskal-Wallis rank test was used to evaluate ...

Background & Aims: Fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) are used widely in colorectal cancer screening. Programs use the same fecal hemoglobin threshold for colonoscopy referral for men and women, but it is unclear whether FIT performs equally in both sexes. We therefore assessed FIT performance in men and women. Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed, in which a total of 10,008 average-risk subjects (age, 50-74 y) were invited for first-round screening and 8316 average-risk subjects (age, 51-74 y) were invited for second-round screening with a single FIT. Subjects with a hemoglobin (Hb) level of 10 µg hemoglobin (Hb)/g (or =50 ng/mL) feces or higher were referred for colonoscopy. The test characteristics were assessed by sex for a range of FIT cut-off values. Results: In total, 59.8% of men and 64.6% of women participated in the first round (. P < .001). At a cut-off level of 10 µg Hb/g feces, the positivity rate was significantly higher among men (10.7%) compared with women (6.3%; ...

Its a good thing Dennis Pella listened to his wife Pennie when she asked him to get their colon cancer screening tests from their family doctor because, little did Dennis know, he had colon cancer.. "My wife received her colon cancer screening reminder letter in the mail, and I was going to see my doctor about another issue that week. So, my wife said to bring the letter in and get the requisition completed for both of our screening kits," said Dennis. "Im not the kind of person who would run to see the doctor, so it felt out of character for me to ask to have my requisition completed too, but Im glad that I did.". The simple, at-home colon cancer screening test that the Pellas received in the mail, after having their requisition completed by their doctor, is called a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kit. The FIT kit is Ontarios colon cancer screening test for average risk (no first-degree family history of colon cancer - e.g. parent, sibling, child) individuals between the ages of 50 and 74 ...

Background: Populations differ with respect to their cancer risk and screening preferences, which may influence the performance of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs. This review aims to systematically compare the mortality effect of CRC screening across European regions. Methods: Six databases including Embase, Medline, Web of Science, PubMed publisher, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant studies published before March 2018. Bibliographic searches were conducted to select studies assessing the effect of various screening tests (guaiac fecal occult blood test [gFOBT]; flexible sigmoidoscopy [FS]; fecal immunochemical test [FIT] and colonoscopy) on CRC mortality in Europe (PROSPERO protocol: CRD42016042433). Abstract reviewing, data extraction and risk of bias assessment were conducted independently by two reviewers. Results: A total of 18 studies were included; of which, 11 were related to gFOBT, 4 to FS, 2 to FIT and 1 to colonoscopy; 8 were randomised ...
Over the next five years, Crosby and the RCPC team will develop, implement and disseminate an intervention to promote a simple, at-home screening test called FIT (fecal immunochemical test) that could drastically increase rates of annual colorectal cancer screening in rural areas. FIT tests use a new technology for detecting antibodies to polyps (potentially cancerous clumps of cells) in the stool. With FIT, you simply brush the surface of the stool with a brush included in the kit and then dab the end of the brush onto the test card, which is mailed off for testing. The test is quick, painless, low-cost, and doesnt require a trip to the doctor - still somewhat unpleasant, but likely preferable to an unnecessary colonoscopy or, of course, cancer. In the case of a positive FIT test result, RCPC staff will help individuals navigate the healthcare system to get further testing and treatment as needed ...

TUESDAY, Oct. 3, 2017 (HealthDay News) - Adding surveillance to fecal immunochemical test (FIT) screening reduces colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality and increases colonoscopy demand, according to a study published online Oct. 2 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.. Marjolein J.E. Greuter, Ph.D., from VU University Medical Center in the Netherlands, and colleagues examined the additional benefit of colonoscopy surveillance in a screening setting among asymptomatic individuals aged 55 to 75 years without a prior CRC diagnosis in a microsimulation using the Adenoma and Serrated pathway to Colorectal Cancer model. The authors compared FIT screening with colonoscopy surveillance performed according to Dutch guidelines with no screening or surveillance.. The researchers found that there was a 50.4 percent reduction in CRC mortality for FIT screening without surveillance versus no screening or surveillance. Addition of surveillance to FIT screening reduced mortality by an additional 1.7 to 52.1 percent, ...
The performance of combining fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) and a high-risk factor questionnaire (HRFQ) in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in economically and medically underserved populations is uncertain. This study investigated the performance of a CRC screening protocol of combining FITs and an HRFQ as primary screening methods in a rural Chinese population. A CRC mass screening was conducted using FITs and an HRFQ as the first and colonoscopy as the second stage of screening in Jiashan, 2007-2009. The target population was 31,963 residents in three communities. The compliance was 84.7% for HRFQ, 76.4% for FITs, and 78.7% for colonoscopy. The detected rates of cancer, adenoma, nonadenomatous polyps, and advanced neoplasm were 2.7%, 14.8%, 5.9%, and 8.9% by FITs, which were higher than those by HRFQ (0.5%, 9.2%, 4.8%, and 3.8%, respectively). There was no significant difference in detected rate for nonadenomatous polyps between FITs and HRFQ. A total of 41.2% adenomas, 53.2% ...

Purpose: Our pilot study, "No Ke Ola Pono o Na Kane", used an existing peer-led, health-activated support group model employing the traditional Hawaiian practice of the "hale mua" (mens house) to address health disparities in colon cancer screening among Native Hawaiian men (kane). The hale mua historically provided an opportunity for dialogue among kane about the methods used to sustain families, training needed for the initiation of young men into manhood, and for teaching the traditions of culture and family. Using a community-based approach, we repurposed and integrated this cultural practice into the study to promote health and well-being among Hawaiian men, including the use of Fecal Immunochemical Tests (FIT) in kane over age 50 who have not been screened for colon cancer.. Background: In Hawaii, Hawaiian men have one of the highest death rates from colon cancer and are diagnosed at later stages compared to other racial/ethnic and gender groups. Early and regular screening for ...
We have compared CRC screening with FIT at different f-Hb cut-offs in a large population aged between 50 and 69 years. To our knowledge, there have been few previous studies of sex and age related differences in population-based FIT screening programs.. In our study, a total of 444,582 persons were invited to participate in the Basque Country CRC Screening Programme. This large number of participants facilitated the performance of a reliable and robust statistical analysis to determine whether a simple, single f-Hb cut-off should be used for different populations without increasing the interval cancer rate, thus allowing the provision of insight for others running similar programmes.. CRC screening programmers in a number of countries have encountered higher than expected positivity [36], thus leading to overwhelming demand for scarce colonoscopy resources and a need to increase the f-Hb cut-off to lower the number of referrals. In consequence, data on the performance of FIT in men and women are ...
Of 232 patients approached, 200 (86.2%) agreed to participate. Of these, 145 (72.5%) completed the FIT as recommended (adherent) and 55 (27.5%) were referred for telephone counseling (nonadherent), of whom 23 (41.8%) became adherent after 1 to 2 counseling sessions, an 11.5 percentage-point increase in screening after telephone counseling and 84% FIT adherence overall. Lack of CRC-related knowledge and perceived CRC risk were the screening barriers most highly associated with nonadherence. Although not statistically significant, the rate of conversion to screening adherence was higher among participants who received telephone counseling compared to an answering machine reminder ...
A method and device for determining the presence of an analyte in a sample suspected of containing the analyte is disclosed. The method involves contacting a test solution containing the sample and a first member of a specific binding pair with an end portion of a strip of bibulous material capable of being traversed by the test solution through capillary action. The first member of a specific binding pair is capable of binding the analyte. The strip contains a second member of a specific binding pair integral therewith for concentrating and non-diffusively binding the first sbp member at a small situs on the strip separated from the end portion of the strip. The detectible signal is produced in relation to the presence of the analyte in the test solution. The test solution passes through the situs as the test solution traverses the bibulous material. After the test solution has been allowed to traverse at least a portion of the strip, the strip is contacted with a developer solution containing members
