This paper reports a new hybrid approach toward achieving high volumetric energy and power densities in an electrochemical flow capacitor for grid energy storage. The electrochemical flow capacitor suffers from high self-discharge and low energy density because charge storage is limited to the available surface area (electric double layer charge storage). Here, we examine two carbon materials as conducting particles in a flow battery electrolyte containing the VO 2+/VO 2 + redox couple. Highly porous activated carbon spheres (CSs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are investigated as conducting particle networks that facilitate both faradaic and electric double layer charge storage. This work shows that N-doped carbon can be derived from pyrrole modified biomass-lignin. Simultaneous chemical and physical activation using potassium hydroxide during the heat treatment can effectively create porous N-doped carbon. The activated carbon possesses cheese-like morphology with large specific surface area of 2661 m2 g-1 and mesopores of ~15 nm. Benefited from these characteristics, EDLCs prepared using the N-doped porous activated carbon show high specific capacitance of 248 F g-1 at low current density of 0.1 A g-1 and 211 F g-1 at high current density of 10 A g-1 in 6 M KOH solution. The EDLCs also exhibit excellent cycle stability for continuous 1,000 cycles at different current densities. This work indicates that the pyrrol-modified KOH-activated lignin is a promising electrode material for EDLCs.

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is the most critical yet least understood component to guarantee stable and safe operation of a Li-ion cell. Herein, the early stages of SEI formation in a typical LiPF6 and organic carbonate-based Li-ion electrolyte are explored by operando surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, on-line electrochemical mass spectrometry, and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance. The electric double layer is directly observed to charge as Li+ solvated by ethylene carbonate (EC) progressively accumulates at the negatively charged electrode surface. The electron-energy band structure of electric Double Layer (DL) between a molten salt and metal electrode (an anode or cathode) is studied for the electrodepositing crystallization process when the width of DL metal part is less than the one in the molten salt. It is shown that just the molten-salt part of the double layer confines a rate of electrodepositing process. The reason of this is a neutralization of depositing ions into the molten-salt near the electrode and hence their diffusively confined motion in a density gradient field. It is important to minimize the electrodepositing potential for effective component crystallization out of the molten salt and its exchange process including selective extracting of salt components by their crystallization on electrodes of galvanic circuit. It is shown that this can be carried out by means of fine and controllable variation of reduction-oxidation (RedOx) potential of the non-stoichiometric salts. We combine direct surface force measurements with thermodynamic arguments to demonstrate that pure ionic liquids are expected to behave as dilute weak electrolyte solutions, with typical effective dissociated ion concentrations of less than 0.1% at room temperature. We performed equilibrium force-distance measurements across the common ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C4mim][NTf2]) using a surface forces apparatus with in situ electrochemical control and quantitatively modeled these measurements using the van der Waals and electrostatic double-layer forces of the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory with an additive repulsive steric (entropic) ion-surface binding force. Accepted April 21, 2010. Abstract. A Porous Clay Heterostructure (PCH) was prepared by chemical modification of a natural clay, by intercalation of a cationic surfactant. Its surface charge properties as well as its adsorption capacity for alkali metals were studied using a potentiometric titration method. The PCH developed a pH dependent charge (σH), probably due to the presence of amphoteric silanol groups (SiO2) coming from the pillars of silica interlayered during the pillared process. The PCH presented a region of zero charge in the range of pH of 4.0 to 7.7. The σH acquired by the PCH was adjusted with good correlation to the electric double layer model of Gouy Chapman (r2 = 0.9925). The surface charge conferred the PCH ion exchange capacity for the studied metals (Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs) at high pH values (10 , pH), in comparable quantities (3.5 to 6 meq/g) to some Dowex resins. While electric fields are known to influence a variety of cell activities, nanostructures can mimic the biological environment structurally. Therefore, one way to improve the functional outcome of bone tissue engineering may be electrical stimulation in combination with a biomimetic structure (e.g. nanofibers). The goal of this project is the analysis the properties of electrical stimuli delivered through a nanostructure (for example, the confinement of the field in a sub-cellular region), with a finite element method (FEM) approach, followed by the synthesis of the conductive nanofibers and cell culture experiments. We present in situ observation of double layer (DL) and associated electron measurement in the subspin time resolution in the separatrix region during reconnection for the first time. The DL is inferred to propagate away from the X line at a velocity of about ion acoustic speed and the parallel electric field carried by the DL can reach -20 mV/m. The electron displays a beam distribution inside the DL and streams toward the X line with a local electron Alfven velocity. A series of electron holes moving toward the X line are observed in the wake of the DL. The identification of multiple similar DLs indicates that they are persistently produced and therefore might play an important role in energy conversion during reconnection. The observation suggests that energy dissipation during reconnection can occur in any region where the DL can reach.. ...

In this study, the influence of electrolytes on bentonite dispersions flocculated with different polyacrylamides varying in charge type, density and molecular weights has been investigated. The presence of electrolytes was found to induce profound impact on the flocculation behavior of bentonite-polyacrylamide dispersions, which was analyzed by means of residual turbidity, zeta potential and floc size distribution tests. Electrolytes enhanced the adsorption of anionic polyacrylamide chains on negative bentonite surface, while hindering adsorption of cationic polyacrylamides. Electric double layer compression and mediated flocculation by metal cations were the principle mechanisms involved in the improvement of flocculation behavior. High molecular weight and charge density variants greatly reduced the turbidity and negative zeta potential of dispersions for anionic polyacrylamides. hello all, theres been some talk on another manufactuers site where they were boasting about having the only hammock model in the world that has bite-proof hammock fabric. regardless of the validity of this statement, it got me wondering, has anybody experienced bite through in any of my models when laying directly on the fabric with nothing under them? which model? double layer or single layer? folks occasionally ask about mosquitoes biting through, i dont think they can bite
