The standard deviations of change scores for total and fat-free soft tissue mass (FFST) from Random scans (2-3%) were approximately double those observed in the Best (1-2%), owing to extra random errors associated with Random scans at baseline. There was little difference in change scores for fat mass. The effect of cold water immersion therapy on baseline-taper changes in FFST was possibly harmful (-0.7%; 90% confidence limits ±1.2%) with Best scans but unclear with Random scans (0.9%; ±2.0%). Both protocols gave similar possibly harmful effects of cold water immersion therapy on changes in fat mass (6.9%; ±13.5% and 5.5%; ±14.3%, respectively). ...
Abstract. ABSTRACT: In team sports, during the competitive season, peak performance in each game is of utmost importance to coaching staff and players. To enhance recovery from training and games a number of recovery modalities have been adopted across professional sporting teams. To date there is little evidence in the sport science literature identifying the benefit of modalities in promoting recovery between sporting competition games. This research evaluated hydrotherapy as a recovery strategy following a simulated game of rugby union and a week of recovery and training, with dependent variables between two simulated games of rugby union evaluated. Twenty-four male players were randomly divided into three groups: one group (n=8) received cold water immersion therapy (2 X 5min at 10oC, whilst one group (n=8) received contrast bath therapy (5 cycles of 10oC/38oC) and the control group (n=8) underwent passive recovery (15mins, thermo neutral environment). The two forms of hydrotherapy were ...
Weve all seen videos of athletes giving post-game interviews from the discomfort of locker room ice baths. Does this recovery strategy really work, and can those benefits be enjoyed by typical gym-goers in addition to competitive athletes? And how do timing and duration factor in? This latest ACE-sponsored research answers these questions and more.
Abstract: The autonomic nervous system reflexively controls many physiological systems, including the cardiovascular and ventilatory systems. Water immersion causes fluid shifts within the body that increase central blood volume and intravascular fluid volume. These increases are thought to cause changes in autonomic activity, however it is not known if sympathetic nerve activity is reduced during water immersion. Because the autonomic nervous system controls the cardiovascular and ventilatory systems, it is imperative to understand changes in autonomic activity during water immersion in order to develop countermeasures to protect Navy and recreational divers from potentially adverse physiological responses to the environmental conditions that they are exposed to. This project will examine how changes in both water temperature and breathing gases influence autonomic activity during head out water immersion ...
Immersion of the human body in water has several physiological effects, some of these are directly due to immersion, and are caused by the external hydrostatic pressure of the water providing support against the internal hydrostatic pressure of the blood. Other effects are due to water temperature and heat transfer. Immersion in water affects the circulation, renal system and fluid balance, breathing, and thermal balance. Immersion in cold water is causatively associated with drowning and hypothermia. Plasma fluid losses due to immersion diuresis occur within a short period of immersion. Head-out immersion causes a blood shift from the limbs and into the thorax. The fluid shift is largely from the extravascular tissues and the increased atrial volume results in a compensatory diuresis. Plasma volume, stroke volume, and cardiac output remain higher than normal during immersion. The increased respiratory and cardiac workload causes increased blood flow to the cardiac and respiratory muscles. ...

Show more ,OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of cold-water immersion (CWI) and whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) on recovery kinetics after exercise-induced muscle damage. METHODS: Ten physically active men performed single-leg hamstring eccentric exercise comprising 5 sets of 15 repetitions. Immediately postexercise, subjects were exposed in a randomized crossover design to CWI (10 min at 10°C) or WBC (3 min at -110°C) recovery. Creatine kinase concentrations, knee-flexor eccentric (60°/s) and posterior lower-limb isometric (60°) strength, single-leg and 2-leg countermovement jumps, muscle soreness, and perception of recovery were measured. The tests were performed before and immediately, 24, 48, and 72 h after exercise. RESULTS: Results showed a very likely moderate effect in favor of CWI for single-leg (effect size [ES] = 0.63; 90% confidence interval [CI] = -0.13 to 1.38) and 2-leg countermovement jump (ES = 0.68; 90% CI = -0.08 to 1.43) 72 h after exercise. Soreness was moderately lower 48 h ...
Abbey C. Sidebottom, Ph.D., M.P.H., from Allina Health in Minneapolis, and colleagues retrospectively reviewed electronic health record data (2014 to 2018) from two health systems (eight hospitals) to compare neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or special care nursery admission for deliveries with water immersion versus matched deliveries without water immersion.. The researchers found that of the 583 women with water immersion, 34.1 percent experienced first-stage water immersion only, 65.9 percent experienced second-stage immersion, and 53.9 percent completed delivery in the water. Compared with control births, NICU or special care nursery admissions were lower for second-stage water immersion deliveries (odds ratio, 0.3), as were lacerations (odds ratio, 0.5). There were no differences seen for NICU or special care nursery admissions and lacerations between the first-stage immersion group and their matched comparisons. In second-stage water immersion births, cord avulsions occurred in 0.8 ...
A reduction in body temperature is considered to be the primary mechanism by which cold water immersion (CWI) enhances short-term (h) recovery and improves exercise capacity in the heat. However, improvement in exercise performance may be optimised at a given cooling magnitude. Water temperature and immersion duration influence the magnitude of cooling in the core body, muscle and skin. Given the role of blood flow in convective heat flux, substrate delivery and metabolic waste clearance, it is important to understand the influence of different water temperatures on compartmental distribution of limb blood flow during CWI. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare blood flow changes in the common femoral artery, vastus lateralis muscle, and thigh skin induced by 5 min of post-exercise water immersion at 8°C, 14°C, 35°C or passive rest. In a randomised manner, nine recreationally active men performed exhaustive cycling in a climate control chamber (32.8 ± 0.4°C and 32 ± 5%rh), followed by
The effects of cold acclimation (CA) on the cardiorespiratory responses to cold air and water stress tests (CST) were studied in seven males before and after a CA program of daily 90 min cold water (18 C) immersions repeated five times a week for five consecutive weeks. The CST consisted of a 90 min resting exposure to cold air or water during which rectal temperature (T sub re), oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), minute ventilation (V sub E), heart rate (HR), cardiac output (Q) and blood pressure (BP) were periodically measured. In cold air following CA, the VO2 at 10 minutes was lower post than pre CA, however, no differences were found in cold water. The (V sub E) increased during CST as a function of VCO2. The CA did not affect the (V sub E)-VCO2 relationship or the pattern of breathing during CST in cold air or water. The CA had no effect on Q or (a-V) O2 difference, which both increased during the first 45 min of CST, then remained stable. BP increased significantly during
Respiratory gas exchange was investigated in human subjects immersed up to the shoulders in water at different temperatures (Tw = 25, 34, and 40 degrees C). Cardiac output (Qc) and pulmonary tissue volume (Vti) were measured by a rebreathing technique with the inert gas Freon 22, and O2 consumption …

1. Four Macaca fascicularis monkeys were bilaterally sympathectomized by removing the thoracic sympathetic chain from the middle cervical ganglion to the T-6 sympathetic ganglion. This was done chronically, allowing adequate recovery time. While under light pentobarbital anaesthesia, the animals were then subjected to blood volume expansions with isotonic, isooncotic dextran or to head-out immersions. Seven immersions and seven volume expansions were carried out.. 2. With immersion, there were significant increases in blood pressure, central venous pressure, urine flow, sodium excretion, potassium excretion, glomerular filtration rate, percentage of filtered sodium excreted and free water clearance. Although blood pressure and central venous pressure initially increased during the first immersion period, heart rate continued to increase with the immersion, while blood pressure and central venous pressure remained constant. Volume expansion caused an increase in central venous pressure, urine ...

Аннотация: BackgroundDry immersion (DI), a ground-based model of microgravity previously used in Russia, has been recently implemented in France. The aim of this study was to analyze early events in a short-term DI model in which all conditions are met to investigate who is first challenged from osteo- or adipo-kines and to what extent they are associated to insulin-regulating hormones.MethodsTwelve healthy men were submitted to a 3-day DI. Fasting blood was collected during pre-immersion phase for the determination of the baseline data collection (BDC), daily during DI (DI24h, DI48H and DI72h), then after recovery (R+3h and R+24h). Markers of bone turnover, phosphocalcic metabolism, adipokines and associated factors were measured.ResultsBone resorption as assessed by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoform 5b and N-terminal crosslinked telopeptide of type I collagen levels increased as early as DI24h. At the same time, total procollagen type I N- and C-terminal propeptides and ...

Heat acclimation by post-exercise hot water immersion (HWI) on six consecutive days reduces thermal strain and improves exercise performance during heat stress. However, the retention of adaptations by this method remains unknown. Typically, adaptations to short-term, exercise-heat-acclimation (max in the heat (33°C, 40% RH) before (PRE) and 24 h after (POST) the HWI intervention (n = 13) and then at 1 week (WK 1) and 2 weeks (WK 2) after the HWI intervention (n = 9). Heat acclimation involved a 40-min treadmill run (65% max) on six consecutive days in temperate conditions (20°C), followed by ≤40 min HWI (40°C). Post-exercise HWI induced heat acclimation adaptations that were retained for at least 2 weeks, evidenced by reductions from PRE to WK 2 in: resting rectal core temperature (Tre, −0.36 ± 0.25°C), Tre at sweating onset (−0.26 ± 0.24°C), and end-exercise Tre (−0.36 ± 0.37°C). Furthermore, mean skin temperature (Tsk) (−0.77 ± 0.70°C), heart rate (−14 ± 10 beats⋅min-1),
Im happy and beyond tired, said Grace Mah, who spearheaded the Mandarin immersion push.. Many of the concerns raised about Palo Altos program were also brought up when Cupertinos pioneer program began a decade ago. One Cupertino parent at the time questioned the value of language immersion. Cupertino caters too much to the Chinese, she told a neighborhood newspaper after the Mandarin immersion was proposed to the school board. Mandarin should be taught at home.. Seed money for the Cupertino program was a $175,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. But in the beginning, some parents and residents objected to use of district funds and staff time for the immersion program - just as opponents have objected in Palo Alto.. Parents of Cupertino immersion students countered with a solution of their own: They said they would raise supplemental funds for the program.. For any successful program, a huge amount of parent involvement was needed to keep it sustained, said Jerry Wang, a ...
The marked reduction in breath-hold time (i.e., volitional apnea) with cold water immersion and submersion has obvious implication for escape from within vessels, helicopters, and vehicles that have accidentally sunk, as a well as immersion in rough water. The volume of the inspiratory gasp and the minute volumes resulting from the uncontrollable hyperventilation (minute ventilation ,100 liters) that occurs on immersion in cold water should be compared with the lethal volume for sea water aspiration, 22 ml/kg or ∼1.5 liters for a 70-kg human (52). The observation of the high incidence of cardiac arrhythmias following the release of breath hold has implications for snorkeling and breath-hold diving, as well as for survival following near drowning.. In many countries, water birth has become commonplace. For example in the United Kingdom, the UK Central Council for Nursing has stated that assistance at water birth is part of a midwifes duties and not special treatment (13, 78). Each midwife ...
Various studies have shown a significant, positive autonomic effect during warm water immersion in both young and older individuals. The noted effects are parallel to the findings seen during meditation and after a period of quiet relaxation.. Warm water immersion has also shown to reduce anxiety. During this relaxed state, the brain is disengaged from momentary concerns and stresses. Memory functions improve, free-associative linkages are increased, which then facilitates creative thought processes. In fact, Winston Churchill was known to take long, hot baths on a daily basis. These baths had to be kept at a particular temperature and were measured by a thermometer. He was also known to dictate and take meetings from the bathtub. It is believed that his creativity was due in part to the warm water immersion.. Immersion in water of any temperature produces buoyancy, which serves to off-load joints, reduce loads on the spine and intervertebral discs, and increase peripheral circulation as well as ...

In a study of 6 men aged 29 to 48 we studied the effect of water body immersion during air or pure oxygen, or oxygen - 4 % CO2 gas mixture breathing upon pulmonary volumes and respiratory biomechanics (using bodyplethysmography), the extent of lung hydration (two-frequency impedansometry), and pulmonary metabolic function (by determination of the concentration of biologically active substances in the condensate of the exhaled air). We found an additive nature of immersion/hyperoxic effects upon the respiratory and metabolic pulmonary functions manifested in an acceleration and growth of a deficit in pulmonary vital capacity, a bronchoconstriction effect, increase of a lung hydration, and decrease of serotonin catabolism. Contrary to our expectation, we did non find any potentiation of oxygen induced toxic effects upon the lungs during immersion/hyperoxia/hypercapnia exposures ...

Any victim pulled from cold water should be treated for hypothermia - this is the very dangerous and important stage of survival which is a result of cold water immersion. At this point, you should seek trained medical treatment immediately. Symptoms of hypothermia may include intense shivering, loss of coordination, mental confusion, cold and blue (cyanotic) skin, weak pulse, uncontrolled breathing, irregular heartbeat, and enlarged pupils. Once shivering stops, core body temperature begins to drop critically. Try to prevent body cooling and get the victim to a medical facility immediately.. ...

In this research, a simple and fast method was employed to synthesize CuO nanoleaves/silica gel nanocomposites (CuO/SGn), which is a cost effective antimicrobial material. CuSO4.5H2O is the only raw material used in CuO/SGn production through the molten salt method. The structure and morphology of the nanocomposites were characterized by DRS, XRD, and SEM. The copper size in CuO/SG was found to be dependent on the immersion time in molten salt. SEM images revealed smaller-sized particle leaves, from a sample obtained after longer immersion time. The antimicrobial activity of CuO/SGn was investigated against Escherichia coli. The produced CuO/SGn showed inhibitory effect against E. coli. However, the growth-inhibitory effect depends on the copper content and size. Lower loading of CuO nanoparticles in 10 min immersion time resulted in less antibacterial activity (73.33%) and sample obtained from longer immersion time demonstrated higher antibacterial activity (up to 99.96%). The maximum amount of released
This review evaluated the effects of precooling via cold water immersion (CWI) and ingestion of ice slurry/slushy or crushed ice (ICE) on endurance performance measures (e.g. time-to-exhaustion and time trials) and psychophysiological parameters (core [Tcore] and skin [Tskin] temperatures, whole body sweat [WBS] response, heart rate [HR], thermal sensation [TS], and perceived exertion [RPE]). Twenty-two studies were included in the meta-analysis based on the following criteria: (i) cooling was performed before exercise with ICE or CWI; (ii) exercise longer than 6 min was performed in ambient temperature ≥26°C; and (iii) crossover study design with a non-cooling passive control condition ...
This study investigated the effect of regular postexercise cold water immersion (CWI) on muscle aerobic adaptations to endurance training. Eight males performed 3 sessions/wk of endurance training for 4 wk. Following each session, subjects immersed one leg in a cold water bath (10°C; COLD) for 15 min, while the contralateral leg served as a control (CON). Muscle biopsies were obtained from vastus lateralis of both CON and COLD legs prior to training and 48 h following the last training session. Samples were analyzed for signaling kinases: p38 MAPK and AMPK, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), enzyme activities indicative of mitochondrial biogenesis, and protein subunits representative of respiratory chain complexes I-V ...
This review includes 12 trials (3243 women): eight related to just the first stage of labour: one to early versus late immersion in the first stage of labour; two to the first and second stages; and another to the second stage only. We identified no trials evaluating different baths/pools, or the management of third stage of labour.. Results for the first stage of labour showed there was a significant reduction in the epidural/spinal/paracervical analgesia/anaesthesia rate amongst women allocated to water immersion compared to controls (478/1254 versus 529/1245; risk ratio (RR) 0.90; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.82 to 0.99, six trials). There was also a reduction in duration of the first stage of labour (mean difference -32.4 minutes; 95% CI -58.7 to -6.13). There was no difference in assisted vaginal deliveries (RR 0.86; 95% CI 0.71 to 1.05, seven trials), caesarean sections (RR 1.21; 95% CI 0.87 to 1.68, eight trials), use of oxytocin infusion (RR 0.64; 95%CI 0.32 to 1.28,five trials), ...

In September 1996, Montgomery County [Maryland] started what it promoted as the first Mandarin Chinese immersion program for elementary students in the country. The program at Potomac Elementary School became a national model, and acclaim and fame followed. Today, the original class of first-graders are seniors preparing for college. Many continued to study Chinese in middle and high school, but most dropped out in recent years - a handful as late as this fall - citing confusion in the curriculum and difficulties with the instructor. Now, just three of the first 22 students continue to study Chinese at the clusters high school….. Critics say there is a lack of resources and appropriate materials, poor coordination among grade levels and inadequate teacher development. Theres even disagreement among educators on what immersion is. Immersion can mean many things to different people in the field, said Elena Izquierdo, vice president of the District-based nonprofit National Association for ...

A new kind of ice bath is gaining popularity and its a cool way to achieve wellness.. I love the cold. Everything about it! Even in the depths of winter, I finish each shower with an ice cold rinse. Its energizing and clears the morning blues away quicker than anything Ive known……until I discovered Cryo Fitness Penrith in Western Sydney, which offers a unique kind of therapy call Whole Body Cryotherapy.. Its a modern day alternative to cold water immersion, ice baths or ice packs says owner Peter Watson. It involves exposing the skin to extreme cold, dry (below -140 deg) for one to three minutes.. Liquid Nitrogen is safely used to achieve the sub zero temperatures, which deliver numerous health benefits. Exposing the skin to these extreme temperatures briefly, triggers the release of anti-inflammatory molecules, endorphins, increased oxygen in the blood and a release of toxins Peter says.. When I left the chamber my thoughts were clear and my mood euphoric. Cryotherapy treatments ...

Dr. John Melville, our Director of Biology, developed an innovative diving reflex laboratory exercise while teaching at Wartburg College. In the lab, students learn basic heart anatomy, histology of arteries and veins, and perform an EKG using Vernier sensors. The students then develop their own experiment, which often involved the diving reflex. Weddell Seal The diving reflex is an adaptation found in marine mammals for diving in cold water. During a dive, there is a reduction in heart rate, referred to as bradycardia, or the diving reflex. The majority of research on the diving reflex has been done on seals. The Weddell seal of Antarctica is a great example. Weddell seals can hold their breath for extended periods (20 minutes to an hour) and can dive to depths of 500 meters. During each dive, heart rate and cardiac output decrease dramatically as blood is shunted away from the extremities and directed to the vital organs. A much smaller version of the diving reflex occurs in humans and is easy to

The role of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) in modulating volume and circulatory homeostasis remains uncertain, and there has been as yet no systematic analysis of the factors promoting ANF release in humans. Since immersion in water to the neck provides a volume stimulus identical to that induced by 2 litres of saline, without plasma compositional change, immersion to the neck was used to assess the ANF response to acute central blood-volume expansion. Using a radio-immunoassay that reliably detected ANF in human plasma extracts, more than 80% of plasma immunoreactive (ir) ANF was shown to elute as a single peak on reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography, with a retention time identical to that of the synthetic 28-residue alpha-human (alpha-h) ANF. The response of plasma irANF to 3 h of immersion in water to the neck was evaluated in four sodium-replete normal subjects; the immersion produced a prompt and marked increase in irANF in each subject, and recovery was associated with a prompt

The sling swimsuit is a one-piece swimsuit which is supported by fabric at the neck. In practice, sling swimsuits provide as little, or even less, coverage (or as much exposure) as a bikini. Monokini types also exist. The sling swimsuit is also known by a variety of names including suspender bikini, sling bikini, suspender thong, slingshot swimsuit or just slingshot. It is so named because of its resemblance to the Y-shape frame of a slingshot. It is sometimes listed as a bikini variant. When designed for or worn by a man, it is often called a mankini. Usually, a sling swimsuit comprises a bikini bottom of any style, with side straps extending upwards to cover the breasts, then going over the shoulders and behind the neck or extending down the back. The sling swimsuit leaves the sides of the torso uncovered, while covering the nipples and pubic area. Behind the neck, the straps may join and reach down the back to the buttocks thong or string style. The variation of sling swimsuits is ...

Problem identification remains a significant challenge in the education of biomedical engineers. Access to clinics and clinicians is limited, and therefore a host of clinical problems and the breadth of healthcare realities are inaccessible to the average student. A popular approach to overcoming this limitation comes in the form of clinical immersion experiences, which have been implemented in various ways and have targeted a variety of educational levels. We built a summer immersion program with broad curricular impact for Biomedical Engineering (BME), supported by a Team-Based Design in Biomedical Engineering Education (R25) award from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. This immersion program matches undergraduate BME students with third year medical students. These BME Clinical Scholars act as observers during ten-weeks of the medical students summer clinical clerkships. Importantly, the Clinical Scholars join an established learning community of medical ...

Regardless of the application, Testo has an extensive range of portable, easy-to-use measuring instruments and probes for measuring the core temperature in liquids and pastes, or plastic media. They are excellent for taking quick spot check measurements. The temperature probe is fixed to the measuring instrument. The slimmer the immersion/penetration probe, the faster it is, and the less deep it has to be immersed in the object being measured. A large range of temperature probes for immersion or penetration measurements can be connected also to the convenient data logger.
Castle Pumps have a wealth of experience with marine applications and we were confident that we could offer a more reliable system. We wanted to ascertain all the facts to ensure we selected the most suitable seawater pumps possible; it was important for us to know the sump depth and the maximum size of the solids.. To make the system as reliable as possible, we advised using two pumps in a duty/standby operation to ensure that there was a backup pump in case of any failures. We selected vertical immersion pumps with vortex non-clogging impellers to cope with the soft solids. The pump casings and impellers were specified in bronze to avoid corrosion in the sea water. These vertically immersed centrifugal pumps can be supplied with various column lengths to fit sumps of any depth like the one the customer had on board. As the pump head is totally immersed in the fluid, it ensures that the pump is always primed and there is no risk of cavitation. Vertical immersion pumps also have the added ...

This paper reports from the early phase of a Participatory Design (PD) process where the goal is to design technology that involves people with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and their caretakers as participants. The background of the study is a long-term collaboration with a local activity center for people with ID and 56 participants from this empirical context participated in this study. The presented methodological approach emphasizes immersion as a means of gaining access to and learning about the context to help identify crucial considerations for the facilitation of later PD activities. The paper presents two analyses of contextual data to reflect on how immersion as a strategy provides important insight into contextual considerations that can help shape future PD activities. Three learning outcomes are presented and discussed: involving users with ID and their caretakers as proxies, organizing long-term commitment, and lastly building on already-established forms of mutual learning ...

The involvement of a thromboxane (TX) A2-like substance in the decrease of mucosal blood flow (MBF) and occurrence of gastric erosions in rats under water-immersion stress was examined. MBF was estimated by aminopyrine clearance. Stress increased acid output without a parallel increase in MBF and caused erosions. OKY-046, an inhibitor of TXA2 synthesis, and ONO-11120, an antagonist of TXA2 receptors, increased MBF during stress in parallel with an increase in acid output, and erosions did not form. In another experiment, the effects of a TXA2-like substance on MBF during vagal stimulation were examined. Although vagal stimulation alone increased acid output, there were no erosions in the stomach, probably because MBF was increased in parallel with acid output. Intra-arterial administration of a TXA2-like substance formed by the metabolism of arachidonic acid in the blood reduced MBF during vagal stimulation. Intra-arterial administration of ONO-11113, an agonist of TXA2 receptors, also reduced ...
The dive response is highly prevalent in aquatic mammals and has been observed to a lesser degree in humans. Stimulated by cold-water facial submersion, this response involves a series of reflexes characterized by a decrease in heart rate (HR), constriction of peripheral blood vessels, and an increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP). Involving the co-activation of both the parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic nervous systems (SNS), this response is hypothesized to help conserve oxygen by shunting blood to vital organs. PURPOSE: To observe if the SNS activation associated with high intensity exercise could attenuate the decrease in HR associated with the diving response. METHODS: Eight female and six male subjects (21±2 years) participated in this study and visited the lab on three occasions. The order of visits was counterbalanced. For one visit, subjects rested for 10 minutes prior to submerging their face up to the temples in 5ºC water for 20 seconds while breathing through a snorkel (RS). The

An immobilization protocol was developed to attach receptors on smooth silver thin films. Dense and packed 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA) was used to avoid uncontrolled sulfidization and harmful oxidation of silver nanolayers. N,N-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) were added to make the silver surfaces reactive. A comparative study was carried out with different immersion times of silver samples in 11-MUA solutions with different concentrations to find the optimum conditions for immobilization. The signals, during each step of the protocol, were analyzed with a refractometer based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and luminescence techniques. Molecular interactions at the surfaces between the probe and target at the surface nanolayer shift the SPR signal, thus indicating the presence of the substance. To demonstrate specific biosensing, rabbit anti-estrone polyclonal immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody was immobilized through a linker on 47 nm silver layer
Tissue preparation. Adult (200-300 gm) and postnatal day (PD) 7 Sprague Dawley rats were deeply anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital (50 mg/kg body weight) and then perfused transcardially with a mixture of 1% glutaraldehyde and 4% paraformaldehyde in 0.1m phosphate buffer (PB), pH 7.4. Brains were postfixed by immersion at room temperature (RT) for 1 hr (for adults) or overnight (for PD 7) in the same fixative. The prolonged postfixation for neonatal brains was included to compensate for less complete perfusion attributable to their relatively undeveloped vasculature. Variations in the extent of fixation did not have a measurable effect on subsequent quantitative immunolabeling results within each age group. Coronal sections, 40 μm thick for adults, 60-80 μm for PD 7, were made with a vibrating microtome (Leica Microsystems), and fixation was terminated by treatment with 1% sodium borohydride in 0.1 m PB. Sections were stored in PBS, pH 7.4 containing 0.02% sodium azide at 4°C for up to 2 ...

This standard covers procedures for making alternate immersion stress corrosion tests in 3.5% sodium chloride, used primarily for tests of aluminium alloys and ferrous alloys but maybe used for other metals exhibiting susceptibility to chloride ions.. The test utilises a 1 hour cycle that includes a 10 minute period in an aqueous solution of 3.5% sodium chloride followed by a 50 minute period out of the solution during which the specimens are allowed to dry. This 1 hour cycle is continued 24 h/day for the total number of days recommended for the particular alloy being tested, typically from 20 to 90 days or longer depending upon the resistance of the alloy to corrosion by saltwater. ...

Definitions: A sonar, or sonar system, may be defined as a system consisting of an electroacoustic transducer and a package of electronics to control the transmission and/or reception of sound. The transducer converts an electrical signal to acoustic vibrations in the contact or immersion medium, e.g., seafloor or water column. The transducer acts reciprocally, converting acoustic vibrations to an electrical signal. A hydrophone may describe any transducer used underwater, but sometimes has the narrower meaning of a transducer used only to receive underwater sound. In all cases when the subject is transducer calibration, an accompanying set of electronics to control transmission and/or reception is presumed, corresponding to an active or passive sonar system, respectively.. Performance characteristics: A sonar calibration is undertaken to determine performance characteristics of the system. For transducers used in reception, as well as passive sonar systems, a major quantity of interest is the ...
Immersion Pulmonary Oedema usually occurs in older divers and associated with heart conditions, cold water, regulators, and aspiration of sea water.
Thus, both a conscious and an unconscious person can survive longer without oxygen under water than in a comparable situation on dry land. Children tend to survive longer than adults when deprived of oxygen underwater.. When the face is submerged, receptors that are sensitive to water within the nasal cavity and other areas of the face supplied by cranial nerve V (trigeminal) relay the information to the brain and then innervate cranial nerve X, which is part of the autonomic nervous system. This causes bradycardia and peripheral vasoconstriction. Blood is removed from the limbs and all organs but the heart and the brain, creating a heart-brain circuit and allowing the mammal to conserve oxygen.. In humans, the mammalian diving reflex is not induced when limbs are introduced to cold water. Mild bradycardia is caused by the subject holding his breath without submerging the face within water. When breathing with face submerged this causes a diving reflex which increases proportionally to ...

We used frequency-domain measurements with immersion in a matched scattering medium to measure the optical properties of tissue. This approach reduces the effects of boundaries and geometry on the measurements. The diffusion equation, typically used as the basis for determining tissue optical properties, is not valid near a boundary. By immersing the tissue in a scattering medium with nearly the same scattering and absorption coefficients, the boundary effects are greatly reduced and the measurement conditions nearly approximate that in an infinite medium. Also, the measurement is made as a differential against a true homogeneous medium for which the scattering and absorption coefficients can be obtained quite accurately. We demonstrated this approach, using frequency- domain measurements to determine absorption and scattering coefficients of living tissue immersed in diluted intralipid, Ropaque, or milk. Previous approaches to determine optical properties in the frequency-domain used multiple ...
PURPOSE: To develop a magnetic resonance histology (MRH) staining and fixation method by immersion to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with a paramagnetic contrast agent permitting microscopic acquisition within a 3-hour scan time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Methods were optimized for embryonic day 18.5 (E18.5) rat fetuses and imaging at 9.4T with an RF refocused spin-echo pulse sequence (TR/TE = 75 msec/5.2 msec). Fixation/staining was performed by immersion in Bouins fixative containing varied concentrations of ProHance (from 10:1 to 500:1 Bouins:ProHance) and for varied immersion durations (up to 24 hours). RESULTS: The results showed a significant change in T1 and T2 relaxation times as a function of concentration of contrast agent and immersion duration. As the contrast agent penetrated the tissues, T1 was reduced as desired (typically by 10x), but at the same time T2 was profoundly reduced (typically by 3x) due to both protein cross-linking from the fixative and the high concentration ...

Digital art is open, transient, interdisciplinary, multimedia, processual, discursive, concept- and context-dependent, and, in addition, is increasingly oriented toward interaction with the recipient. Within the evolving art genres, virtual art has begun to further dismantle the traditional tableau; this time, in favor of a processual model of art. Interaction, telematics and genetic image processes not only encourage the crossing of boundaries; they also drive the trend toward fusing the perception of the users with interfaces that increasingly assail the entire suite of human senses. There are now immersive works that integrate into virtual art the genres of architecture, sculpture, painting, scenography, theater, film, photography, and even historic image media such as the panorama. The author demonstrates that concepts of immersion that are primarily mediated in a visual form have their own art and media history, a course that comprises various stations before reaching the present time. ...
