Since the discovery of the human mirror neuron system [1], the study of automatic imitation became a focus of interest. This interest originates from the finding that the same neurons fire when an animal executes an action as when it observes the same action being performed by another. These motor neurons were suggested to play a central role in a range of human behaviours, including language acquisition, social learning and understanding others. This neural mechanism has also been suggested to play a critical role in imitation, the effect in which one duplicates anothers action after observing it. This definition suggests that the imitative behaviours do not require conscious control. Although automatic imitation and imitation learning were speculated to be the driving force behind "the great leap forward" in human evolution [2], there is only limited behavioural research investigating the automaticity of human imitative behaviours. One recent attempt was conducted by Cook et al. [3], who ...
Cultural variation can be seen by the extent of information learned or absorbed by children in non-Western cultures through learning by observation. Cultural variation is not restricted only to ethnicity and nationality, but rather, extends to the specific practices within communities. In learning by observation, children use observation to learn without verbal requests for further information, or without direct instruction. For example, children from Mexican heritage families tend to learn and make better use of information observed during classroom demonstration than children of European heritage.[27][28] Children of European heritage experience the type of learning that separates them from their family and community activities. They instead participate in lessons and other exercises in special settings such as school.[29] Cultural backgrounds differ from each other in which children display certain characteristics in regards to learning an activity. Another example is seen in the immersion of ...
Language is a skilled activity. In the development and acquisition of the skill, imitation may play different roles. Imitation in language may be related to and throw light on the role and functioning of imitation in other areas including imitation in robotics. What part does imitation play in the childs acquisition of its mother language? What role did imitation play in the evolutionary origin and diversification of language? How much has imitation to do with the sources of the words we use and the ways those words are put together? These questions can be considered at different levels, the surface forms of language and speech, the underlying systematicies of language and speech, the problem of speech at the articulatory level and beyond or beneath that the problem of the functioning of imitation at the neural level. Imitation of any kind involves a relation between motor and perceptual functioning, between the motor system of the brain and the visual and other sensory systems. Language and ...
Studying imitation is a useful way to measure the memory of babies before they are old enough to talk. Once children can talk, they can just tell us what they remember! Imitation is called deferred imitation when there is a delay between the time a model demonstrates a behavior and when the child has an opportunity to imitate the action. This delay can range from minutes to months. During the delay, children do not have the opportunity to play with the objects that the model used to demonstrate the new behaviors.. Childrens ability to imitate actions increases with age. The graph shows that as children get older, they can remember a simple one-step action for much longer periods of time. For example, one research study found that 9-month-olds show deferred imitation of a simple action, such as pushing a button to make a sound, after 24 hours. They can watch a model perform an action on an object one day, store it in their memory, then recall and perform the same action 24 hours later. Another ...

Some researchers have studied the links between how we learn to communicate as infants and how this might relate to communication with people with advanced dementia.. A famous study by Meltzoff & Moore (1983) showed that even newborn babies readily respond to human faces and can copy simple facial movements made by others, such as sticking out the tongue. These imitative behaviours suggest that babies are born ready and willing to interact with others.. Parents also imitate their babies and naturally repeat and reinforce the facial expressions, sounds and movements they make. This imitation forms the basis of early interactions between babies and parents and provides the foundation for future communication (Tomasello 1992). This sort of shared behaviour between parents and infants happens quite naturally and is not self-conscious. It helps infants to develop their communication skills and to improve them with further support and encouragement (Vygotsky 1978). By acting as if they understand ...
Downloadable! An endogenous growth model is developed demonstrating both static and dynamic gains from trade for developing nations due to the beneficial effects of trade on imitation and technological diffusion. The concept of learning-to-learn in both imitative and innovative processes is incorporated into a quality-ladder model with North-South trade. Domestic technological progress occurs via innovation or imitation, while growth is driven by technological advances in the quality of domestically available inputs, regardless of country of origin. In the absence of trade, Southern imitation of Northern technology leads to asymptotic conditional convergence between the two countries, demonstrating the positive effect of imitation on Southern growth. Free trade generally results in a positive feedback effect between Southern imitation and Northern innovation yielding a higher common steady-state growth rate. Immediate conditional convergence occurs. Thus, trade in this model confers dynamic as well as
According to a new study, dogs "automatically imitate" the body movements of their owners. This automatic imitation is a crucial part of social learning in humans. Austrian researchers found that the phenomenon of body movement causing the observer to move in the same way is evident in many other animals.. The researchers say that it reveals clues about how this type of learning evolved. The study also suggests that the way in which people interact with and play with their dogs as they are growing up shapes their ability to imitate.. "Its not a spontaneous thing," Dr Friederike Range, from the University of Vienna in Austria, told BBC News. "The dogs needed a lot of training to learn it.". The researchers investigated this imitation with a series of trials using a door-opening test. The team built a box with a sliding door on the front that could be opened by using a knob. The owners demonstrated how to open the door by using their mouth. "When the owners used the hand, the dog had to open the ...
One of the coolest tricks in N64 emulation is re-texturing. With this technique, the original graphics of the game are taken out, redone using high resolution textures or a different graphic style (such as Cell Shading), and then reinserted for playback on the PC. These texture packs consist of zipped files that you download and use in combination with a copy of the original game ROM and specific emulators. (See this guide for a detailed example). The only disadvantage to this technique is that there is a lot of time and effort that goes into these texture packs. Dedicated members of the N64 emulation community pour their creativity and skill into these creations and is is no small task to adequately take care of one game, let alone the entire N64 library. Because of this, not every N64 game is going to have high-resolution texture packs available. Although, you are free to join in on the initiative yourself.. Below are some of my favorite examples of texture packs (click to enlarge screens), ...
One of the most highly anticipated user-facing features in Android 4.4 KitKat is NFC Host Card Emulation. What makes this important is that up until very recently, only devices with NFC Secure Element hardware could access the tap-to-pay functionality in Google Wallet. Host Card Emulation lifts this requirement by emulating the ISO/IEC 7816-based smart cards that use the contactless ISO/IEC 14443-4 (ISO-DEP) protocol for transmission. This allows any device running Android 4.4 KitKat (with a US SIM card) to use Google Wallets tap-to-pay feature.. Now, were seeing the first fruits of KitKats software additions. Previously seen only on the Nexus 5, the new Google Wallet allows any KitKat user with NFC hardware (and a US SIM card) to use tap-to-pay functionality, regardless of whether or not the device has an NFC Secure Element.. Head to the Play Store listing to get in on the latest update. The update is rolling out gradually, but those who are overeager can get in on the action by visiting the ...

Observing an action performed by another person to learn a new movement is a frequent experience in adult daily life, such as in sports. However, it is an especially common circumstance during the development of motor skills in childhood. Studies on healthy humans indicate that action observation induces a facilitation in the observers motor system. This effect is supported by an action-perception matching mechanism available both in adults and in children. Because of the simplicity of action observation, it has been proposed to apply this method in clinical contexts. After a brief, non-exhaustive introduction of the essential features underlying action observation in healthy people, we review recent studies reporting beneficial effects of rehabilitative training based on a combination of action perception and execution. We focus on therapeutic interventions for patients with upper-limb motor disabilities such as adults after stroke or children with hemiplegia due to cerebral palsy. Further, we
The present study aimed to investigate how the prior social disposition of a model in a warm-up period influences 18-month-old infants subsequent imitation. Infants were randomly assigned to an interactive and social warm-up period (,i,n,/i, = 19) or a non-interactive and non-social warm-up period (,i,n,/i, = 19) with the model prior to the imitation task. They then participated in an imitation ...

INTERNET DRAFT draft-ietf-pwe3-arch-02.txt August 2003 The PW service-specific mechanisms MUST define whether the packets checksum shall be preserved across the PW, or be removed from PE- bound PDUs and then be re-calculated for insertion in CE-bound data. The former approach saves work, while the latter saves bandwidth. For a given implementation the choice may be dictated by hardware restrictions, which may not allow the preservation of the checksum. For protocols such as ATM and FR, the scope of the checksum is restricted to a single link. This is because the circuit identifiers (e.g. FR DLCI or ATM VPI/VCI) have only local significance and are changed on each hop or span. If the circuit identifier (and thus checksum) were going to change as a part of the PW emulation, it would be more efficient to strip and re-calculate the checksum. The service specific document for each protocol MUST describe the validation scheme to be used. 6.5 Congestion Considerations The PSN carrying the PW may be ...

An emulator is capable of connecting to an information interface that can communicate information from an information source to an information sink in a format native to the information sink. The emulator comprises an emulation controller capable of coupling to the information interface, a network controller coupled to the emulation controller and capable of coupling to an external network, and a storage. The storage holds an instruction sequence executable on the emulation controller. The instruction sequence comprises a code for receiving network information from the external network and a code capable of converting the network information to the native format for transfer to the information sink.

effect of these processes in a model for the spread of a novel behaviour and also select which model-parameters provide the best fit to the monkey data. Our analysis reveals evidence for asocial processes and stimulus enhancement but not observational learning. The latency to solve the tasks co-varied with the strength of the asocial, but not social, processes. Further, only asocial parameters were required for the model to fit the data. Both model and monkey diffusion data exhibited deceleratory diffusion curves. We discuss the relationship between both the asocial and social processes and the diffusion dynamics. ...

Theoretically, the same could be done with the human brain on a much larger scale; the human brain has 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections among them. Mapping the precise, city-streetlike grid and deciphering the rules of the human brains neural network could lead to breakthroughs in our understanding of the roots of human neurological, neurobehavioral and neuropsychiatric disorders. It could also significantly contribute to innovations in preventing, treating and curing conditions associated with problems related to wiring of the brain [source: Collins]. It could also lead to a deeper understanding of how we think and reason, our sense of self, and ways we might emulate the human mind.. Mind-uploading, or creating substrate-independent minds, involves transferring the contents of your human brain to a new synthetic brain - a digital copy of not just your memories, but the particulars of your personality and your very consciousness. Although still in the early stages of C. elegans ...
A method and apparatus using a virtual addressing buffer circuit afford address mapping and control flexibility to provide a unique opportunity for device emulation and software debugging. The method permits the emulation of a device which is physically not present in a CPU controlled system utilizing a virtual addressing buffer circuit. The method includes the step of storing a match address which corresponds to an address location of the device. The virtual addressing buffer intercepts an address request from a CPU for the address location of the device. Bits of the requested address which are not relevant to a determination of whether the requested address matches the match address are filtered out to produce a filtered request address. The filtered request address is compared with the match address, and a match indicator is activated when the filtered requested address matches the match address. A terminate command is provided to a bus controller connected to the CPU and a local memory when the
With glia, neurons are constrained by overarching top down principles imposed on them to develop interesting structure. i.e. They can start to build the dynamic, macroscopic complex computational structures we are familiar with. The latest big research from brain transcriptome centers are unable to determine known cortex structures from the genetic mapping of neurons. What does this mean ? The neuron as the basic component for simulation/emulation is to a degree a faulty concept, but the degree to which it is faulty has amazingly not been realized and our largest simulation/emulation projects are "trying" to run on it ! We do get oscillations, and crude spike co-coalitions, but anything else remotely brain like has to be arranged for the network by programming structure. It does not derive a large brain like network structure from internal basic principles. Why ? A great problem is the various glia have their own unrecognized structure building principles (the focus of my PhD research) which is ...

Model 8000 wedge emulation uses a ball bonder instead of a wedge bonder for low-profile interconnects, fine pitch, running-stitch interconnects, and die-to-die bonding in high-density packages. Chain bonding with stitch-stitch interconnects is said to maximize bonding speed at 7-12 wires per second. The chain bonds also offer improved reliability and reduced keep-out space typical of ball bonding. Wedge emulation controls interconnect geometries according to user-supplied inputs. With no tail-off, bond deformation is reportedly reduced, increasing destructive pull strength up to 5×. Throughput and ease-of-use are increased with all wires a single diameter. Machine software programs interconnects to begin with a stitch instead of ball, enabling the use of gold or other wires. Palomar Technologies, Inc., Carlsbad, CA, www.bonders.com. ...
