Polyimides are well-known for their high chemical inertness and thermal stability. However, it is usually challenging to synthesize UV-curable polyimides since the imidization reaction requires such harsh conditions that acrylate type double bonds cannot withstand. In this work, synthetic methods are developed to obtain polyester-imide type binder polymers with high thermal stability, high compatibility with the other components of the black photoresist, and fine photolithographic patterning property for the negative-tone black photoresist. The syntheses of diimide-diacid or diimide-diol intermediates for the polyesterification with dianhydride gave polyester imides which meets this requirement. The photolithographic tests have shown that the patterning of the micron-sized PDL of the organic light emitting diode (OLED) panel could be obtained. This work will interest the researchers working on the design and optimization of thermally stable binder polymers.

At the most fundamental level, density functional theory was used to study proton dissociation in model acidic pendants that are building blocks for existing and proposed membranes, such as Nafion, sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (SPEEK) and sulfonyl imides. Varying the degree of thionation of a series of naphthalene diimide (NDI) and naphthalic imides (NI) phenothiazine dyad systems afford a systematic approach for tuning of the systems donor-acceptor energy gap. Each dyad was compared to model NDI/NI systems and fully characterised through single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, cyclic voltammetry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), transient absorption spectroscopy (TA), time-resolved infra-red spectroscopy (TRIR) and DFT. The measurements reveal that thionation increases both electron affinity of the NDI/NI acceptor dyad component and accessibility of the singly or doubly reduced states. Furthermore, FTIR and TA measurements show that excited state behaviour is greatly affected by thionation of the NDI and induces a decrease in the lifetime of the excited states formed upon the creation of charge-separated states.. ...

A process is provided for improving the surface properties of polyimide articles which contain significant amounts of transimide. The surface of the polyimide containing the transimide is first treated with a base to convert the surface layer of both the polyimides and the transimides to polyamic salt. Thereafter the surface layer of the converted polyamic salt is treated with an acid to convert the layer to a polyamic acid. This is followed by a cure preferably in infrared radiation at a sufficiently rapid rate to prevent the formation of any significant amounts of transimide and provide only polyimide. Following this treatment metallization is applied to the improved surface layer.

Membranes of sarcoplasmic reticulum were labelled with 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitro[3H]benzene at pH 6.5 and with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulphonate at pH 9.2. Conditions were chosen to restrict reaction to amino groups, and the effect of blockings of these groups by methyl acetimidate was determined. All proteins were labelled to some extent by both reagents, but, whereas the trinitrophenylation of both lipid and protein amino groups was almost completely blocked by methyl acetimidate, the dinitrophenylation of the ATPase at pH 6.5 was much less affected. The seven amino groups on the ATPase that were labelled under these conditions did not react with methyl acetimidate. This reagent can therefore be used to enhance the specificity of fluorodinitrobenzene for amino groups in a hydrophobic environment. The amino groups on the minor proteins and on the phospholipids that reacted with fluorodinitrobenzene at pH 6.5 were probably in an aqueous environment, since the reaction was blocked by methyl acetimidate. ...
Polymer electrolyte films, comprising ammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate salt and butyl-trimethyl ammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquid immobilized in poly (ethyl methacrylate) was studied. Structural, morphological, thermal and electrical properties of the polymer electrolyte films were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and impedance spectroscopy, respectively. Interactions of the salt and ionic liquid with the host polymer were investigated by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. Electrochemical stability of the electrolytes was determined using linear sweep voltammetry and transference numbers corresponding to ionic transport has been evaluated by means of the Wagner polarization technique. We perform extensive molecular dynamics simulations of a poly(ethylene oxide)-based polymer electrolyte material containing lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide salt for a wide temperature regime above and below the experimental crystallization temperature with and without N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ionic liquid (IL). The impact of the IL-concentration on the cation dynamics is studied. The increase of the cation mobility upon addition of IL is significant but temperature-independent. This can be related to distinct variations of the underlying transport properties as expressed within the previously introduced transport model of polymer electrolytes. Even for the largest IL concentration the transport model perfectly predicts the non-trivial time-dependence of the cationic mean square displacement for all temperatures. New composite polymer gels were obtained from cellulose triacetate (CTA), N-methyl-N0-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Pyr1,3TFSI), and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). The goal of this research was to synthesize, characterize and study the potential of selected ionic liquids as solvents for the separation of ethane and ethene. The influence on ethene absorption of the presence of three different metallic cations, lithium (I), nickel (II) and copper (II) in an ionic liquid was also studied. The selected ionic liquids are based in the imidazolium cation containing a functionalization in the alkyl side chain. The chosen anions were the bis(trifluorosulfonyl)imide, [NTf2], the dicyanamide, [DCA] and the methylphosphite, [C1HPO3]. Several parameters were taken into account for this primary evaluation, such as measurements of density, viscosity and absorption of each gas in the ionic liquids, since an ideal separation solvent should have a high absorption capacity and gas selectivity, low viscosity, high thermal stability and fast absorption kinetics for the selected gas. As an attractive dielectric material, polyimide has been widely used in the field of electronics, aerospace, and automobiles due to its useful mechanical properties and good chemical resistance. UV irradiation was considered to be the main factor related to the damage and failure of polyimide. Here the effects of UV irradiation on the surface morphology and microscale mechanical properties of polyimide films are characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface roughness of the UV-irradiated samples developed and the mechanical properties degraded with the radiation dose increased. For comparison, uniaxial tensile test was performed to obtain the macroscale Youngs modulus of polyimide film. The UV-irradiated damaging depth was simulated with finite element method (FEM).

Single-ion-conducting electrolytes are desirable for lithium metal batteries because they enable the sole conduction of lithium ions, the reacting species in lithium batteries; hence, they avert detrimental battery limitations due to salt concentration gradients. A single-ion-conducting block copolymer electrolyte, poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrenesulfonyllithium (trifluoromethyl sulfonyl) imide (PEO-b-PSLiTFSI), was characterized \textit{in-situ} and \textit{ex-situ} for its ionic conductivity and morphology using AC impedance spectroscopy and small angle x-ray scattering, respectively. Nanosecond time-resolved emission spectral techniques have been applied to the problem of the origin and nature of the well-known temperature-dependent spectral shifts characteristic of the aminophthalimides in alcohol solvents. It is demonstrated that the temperature-dependent spectral shifts are in fact due to time-dependent spectral shifts. At least two relaxation times characterize this phenomenon. One relaxation time is observed to be subnanosecond in character and may be associated with the exciplex that presumably is present in the system. The other relaxation time is presumably associated with the non-specific dipolar reorientation although it has distinctly different characteristics from the solvent dielectric relaxation time.
