Previous studies have detected abnormal serum ferritin levels in patients with depression; however, the results have been inconsistent. This study used quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) for the first time to examine brain iron concentration in depressed patients and evaluated whether it is related to severity. We included three groups of age- and gender-matched participants: 30 patients with mild-moderate depression (MD), 14 patients with major depression (MDD) and 20 control subjects. All participants underwent MR scans with a 3D gradient-echo sequence reconstructing for QSM and performed the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) test. In MDD, the susceptibility value in the bilateral putamen was significantly increased compared with MD or control subjects. In addition, a significant difference was also observed in the left thalamus in MDD patients compared with controls. Steady-state free precession (SSFP) is a highly-efficient MRI pulse sequence that has been a fairly recent arrival in the functional MRI realm. Several methods for using balanced SSFP to detect the BOLD signal have been proposed to date and will be discussed in this review. After a brief introduction to the general properties of SSFP, this review describes the quite different approaches of transition-band and pass-band SSFP in terms of functional contrast mechanism. It then discusses the potential advantages of these techniques, followed by their challenges and shortcomings. Finally, it gives an overview of some applications considered to date and the authors perspective on where these techniques are headed. In the spirit of this special issue, the author also includes some of the personal history underlying her own explorations in this area. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.

A 53 year old man was referred for a contrast enhanced cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) scan for assessment of anterior myocardial wall viability. An earlier coronary angiogram had shown a mid left anterior descending artery (LAD) occlusion, and echocardiography had shown mildly reduced global left ventricular function without any other abnormalities. Manual segmentation is the gold standard in terms of accuracy; however, automated methods may be necessary in large samples. Automated segmentation accuracy has not been determined for the amygdala in HD. We aimed to determine which of three automated approaches would most accurately segment amygdalae in HD: FreeSurfer, FIRST, and ANTS nonlinear registration followed by FIRST segmentation. T1-weighted images for the IMAGE-HD cohort including 35 presymptomatic HD (pre-HD), 36 symptomatic HD (symp-HD), and 34 healthy controls were segmented using FreeSurfer and FIRST. For the third approach, images were nonlinearly registered to an MNI template using ANTS, then segmented using FIRST. The main contributions of this work are: 1) using two different energy functionals for endocardium and epicardium segmentation to account for their distinctive characteristics; 2) proposing a dual-background model that is suitable for representing intensity distributions of the background in epicardium segmentation; 3) designing a novel shape prior term that is robust and controllable; and 4) an improved estimation of myocardium thickness by using edge information. Automatic segmentation of anatomical structures is often performed using model-based non-rigid registration methods. These algorithms work well when the images do not contain any large deviations from the normal anatomy. We have previously used such a method to generate patient specific models of hip bones for surgery simulation. The method that was used, the morphon method, registers two- or three-dimensional images using a multi-resolution deformation scheme. A prototype image is iteratively registered to a target image using quadrature filter phase difference to estimate the local displacement. The first alteration allows the snake to converge to the one-response result of a modified Canny edge detector. Hi guys,. I want a help in this issue, please look into . In my recent theme design, I put a fixed ( no scroll ) image to the theme background . So every page of the site has this background image, and on top of that image everything loads ( ex. main container , etc ) . But as different different visitors use different screen resolutions and browsers, i used a really big image ( 1460px by 1000px ) as above mentioned background . Because I want to avoid visitors see the background ( i want them to see the image as the background ) . But the problem now is, even after reducing the quality, still the background image ( jpeg file ) is about 500KB which is a big size . And takes a long time to load . I want to solve this problem . Is there any proper way to solve this ? I think splitting the image into few parts would make the site load faster . But I dnt know how to make the allignment for splitted parts ( i want to finally show the complete image without any mis alignment ) correctly .. Thanks ...

In brain MRI analysis, image segmentation is commonly used for measuring and visualizing the brain’s anatomical structures, for analyzing brain changes, for delineating pathological regions, and for surgical planning and image-guided interventions. In the last few decades, various segmentation techniques of different accuracy and degree of complexity have been developed and reported in the literature. In this paper we review the most popular methods commonly used for brain MRI segmentation. We highlight differences between them and discuss their capabilities, advantages, and limitations. Methods and Results-Fifteen lesions were created in the endocardium of 13 pigs. A multicontrast inversion recovery steady state free precession imaging method was used to delineate the acute ablation lesions, exploiting T1-weighted contrast. T2 and Mo* maps were also created from fast spin echo data in a subset of pigs (n=5) to help characterize the change in intrinsic contrast in the lesions. Gross pathology was used as reference for the lesion size comparison, and the lesion structures were confirmed with histological data. In addition, a colorimetric iron assay was used to measure ferric and ferrous iron content in the lesions and the healthy myocardium in a subset of pigs (n=2). The lesion sizes measured in inversion recovery steady state free precession images were highly correlated with the extent of lesion core identified in gross pathology. We performed two experiments in order to test our algorithm. We performed the "MS Lesion Segmentation Challenge" and did an in-house MS data segmentation using an internal dataset of MS patients that was annotated by an expert rater. For the "MS Lesion Segmentation Challenge" we used the MSLSC Training Dataset (Styner et. al.). We compared the results with the winner of MSLSC (Souplet et. al.) and one of the current top ranked results (Germia et. al.) published after the challenge. We report some of challenge metrics and compare the estimated lesion volume with the true lesion volume. MSLSC consists of twenty subjects with T1-w, FLAIR, T2-w, and manual lesion segmentations. However, manual segmentation is often a time-consuming and subjective process. This paper presents an automatic approach for segmenting retinal layers in Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography images using graph theory and dynamic programming. We present an elastic registration algorithm for the alignment of biological images. Our method combines and extends some of the best techniques available in the context of medical imaging. We express the deformation field as a B-spline model, which allows us to deal with a rich variety of deformations. We solve the registration problem by minimizing a pixelwise mean-square distance measure between the target image and the warped source. The problem is further constrained by way of a vector-spline regularization which provides some control over two independent quantities that are intrinsic to the deformation: its divergence, and its curl. Our algorithm is also able to handle soft landmark constraints, which is particularly useful when parts of the images contain very little information or when its repartition is uneven. The multi-Atlas patch-based label fusion method (MAS-PBM) has emerged as a promising technique for the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image segmentation. The state-of-the-art MAS-PBM approach measures the patch similarity between the target image and each atlas image using the features extracted from images intensity only. It is well known that each atlas consists of both MRI image and labelled image (which is also called the map). The main objective in this study is the impact and importance of different subjects on the discrimination results of admission. Methods: Extracted scores from worksheets are analyzed by MINITAB15 statistical toolbox. The regression values of different subjects were extracted and sorted for each branch of study. All subject correlation coefficients were calculated in comparison to overall candidate performance. A redundancy measure was suggested on the basis of correlation of different subject performances. The distribution box plots were shown for different subject to visualize comparison. Results: The repeatability and redundancy between different subjects were high in bacteriology.
