The Chicago Department of Public Health reported a woman in her 70s with onset of illness in late August.. Mosquitoes that typically carry West Nile virus remain active until the first couple of hard freezes, or nights below 28 degrees Fahrenheit, Dr. Damon T. Arnold, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health said. People should continue to protect themselves against mosquitoes by wearing insect repellent and by trying to reduce any standing water around their homes.. SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the first human West Nile virus case reported in central Illinois for 2013. The Tazewell County Health Department reported a man in his 50s became ill earlier this month.. We are seeing high temperatures and dry weather, which are the perfect conditions for creating mosquito breeding grounds, said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck. The mosquitoes that typically carry West Nile virus breed in stagnant water water left sitting in storm drains or in containers around the outside of your home. So dump out those containers and take other precautions against mosquito bites, like wearing insect repellent.. To date, West Nile virus positive birds, mosquitoes and/or human cases have been reported in 52 counties. The first human case this year was reported on Wednesday, August 21st in a McHenry County woman in her 50s. Last year the first human case was reported July 24, 2012.. For the 2012 ...
I am one of them. I left Illinois in the 1990s for Indiana. I have since started a business here, that probably would have been in Illinois had they not chased me out. I will never go back. My sister in laws brother started a business with his wife a few years ago and they recently got chased out of Illinois to Arizona. Illinois wanted to raise taxes on their $250,000 business by over $20,000 a year. There was no way they could take a hit like that. They are loving Arizona and their higher standard of living they have there. Illinois may be making headlines with big companies like Sears, Jimmy Johns, Caterpillar, the Board of Trade and the like looking for the exits. But its all the little (and medium) sized business that are leaving every day that are killing Illinois (death by a thousand cuts!!). Illinois gives these businesss the middle finger every day and people are tired of it. I can think of thirty, yes thirty small businesses in my area alone that moved from Illinois. Some have since ...

The Illinois Manufacturers Association (IMA) is a trade association for manufacturing companies in Illinois. It bills itself as the oldest and largest statewide manufacturing trade association in the United States. Based in Oak Brook, Illinois, and founded in 1893 by businessmen opposed to legislation limiting the working hours of women, IMA has more than 4000 member companies. The association lobbies on behalf of Illinois manufacturing interests and has its own political action committee and polling organization. IMAs President and CEO is Greg Baise. The IMA publishes a quarterly magazine, The Illinois Manufacturer. On September 29, 1893, Illinois manufacturers met at the Grand Pacific Hotel to organize in opposition to the Sweatshop Law of 1893 that prohibited child labor and mandated an eight-hour workday. The manufacturers formed the Illinois Manufacturers Protective Association for the purpose of co-operating to test the constitutionality of a recent act of the Legislature of this ...

It also requires no-smoking signs, bans smoking within 15 feet (4.6 m) of openings in the targeted buildings, and requires at least 75% of rooms in each hotel to be non-smoking. It replaced the more limited Illinois Clean Indoor Air Act (410 ILCS 80). On January 11, 2007, Illinois State Senator John J. Cullerton introduced comprehensive legislation that would make Illinois workplaces and indoor public places smoke-free. Similar legislation was also introduced in the Illinois House of Representatives as House Bill 246 by Representative Karen Yarbrough. The American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society of Illinois joined more than 450 other organizations in applauding ...

Bath Salts Ban Delivered to Illinois Governor. Succeeding an alleged bath salt overdose of a Southern Illinois woman, the states House of Representatives sent Governor Quinn a ban on the synthetic drug last night. The push to prevent bath salt abuse in Illinois began last month after a 28-year-old Alton woman overdosed from abusing the drug. Shortly afterward, the city of Alton placed an emergency ban on the substance, and a bill was placed in front of the Illinois House of Representatives prohibiting bath salt sales.. The bill passed 112-0, and was sent to the Illinois Govenors office last night. If signed by Governor Quinn, Illinois will be the 11th state to ban the highly addictive synthetic drug.. Sold in convenience stores, smoke shops and on the Internet with names like White Rush, Vanilla Sky and Ivory Wave, these packets of white powder are labeled, not for human consumption and sold as bath salts. The active ingredient, Methylenedioxpyrovalerone (MDPV), is hardly an appropriate ...

In a win for victims of medical malpractice involving wrongful birth, an Illinois Appellate Court recently extended the damages available in such actions. Illinois medical malpractice lawyers handling wrongful birth cases must take note of this decision.. This author has previously written about the need to extend damages for wrongful birth causes of action in Illinois. As discussed in the seminal Illinois Supreme Court in Siemieniec v. Lutheran General Hospital, 117 Ill. 2d 230 (Ill. 1987), wrongful birth refers to claims for relief of parents who allege they would have avoided conception or terminated the pregnancy by abortion but for the negligence of those charged with the prenatal testing, genetic prognosticating, or counseling parents as to the likelihood of giving birth to a physically or mentally impaired child. As a proximate result of the negligently performed genetic counseling or prenatal testing, the parents were foreclosed from making an informed decision whether to conceive ...

In Midwestern United States, deep valleys formed in the glacial sediment or bedrock are concealed by thick sedimentary sequences formed during multiple Quaternary glaciations. These valleys are infilled with sediments holding significant supplies of groundwater, aggregate material, and shallow gas. In Illinois, buried valleys commonly contain glacial aquifers that are a primary source of water for multiple jurisdictions. One of the most productive of these aquifers, the Mahomet aquifer, is situated in east-central Illinois over the Mahomet Bedrock Valley, and extends across fourteen counties. For a recent hydrogeological study of buried valleys in east-central Illinois, a multi-scalar approach was employed to analyze and interpret geological and geophysical data. Multiple routines developed by the authors and their collaborators were run to standardize data in a large database (over 43,500 records). The methodologies used enforced the consistent characterization of materials or lithologies and ...

The Illinois Supreme Court today issued its opinion in the matter of Nolan v. Weil-McLain, perhaps the most significant decision in Illinois asbestos litigation history. Weil-McLain challenged Illinois so-called Lipke rule, which had long been interpreted to preclude asbestos defendants from offering evidence at trial of a plaintiffs exposures to other products, regardless of the defendants purpose. In a 5-1 opinion written by Justice Freeman, the Illinois Supreme Court limited the Lipke case to its facts and specifically overruled those cases (Kochan and Spain) that expanded the Lipke rule to prevent a defendant at trial from introducing evidence of other exposures to advance a causation defense.. The court relied heavily on its prior opinions in Thacker and Leonardi. It rejected the plaintiffs argument that satisfying the Thacker frequency, regularity and proximity standard establishes legal causation and a presumption that the defendant at trial is a proximate cause of a plaintiffs ...
