Six traditional herbs which are well-known in Vietnam for their effect on endoparasite treatment, including: Achyranthes Bidentata Blume, Cassia Alata L, Embelia Ribes Burn, Ipomoea Hederacea Jacq, Leucaena Glauca Benth and Solanumtorvum Swartz were collected to evaluate the inhibitory effect on the egg hatching and larval movement of goat Haemonchus contortus. The aqueous extracts was made and diluted to 5 %, 10 % and 20 % to test. All of the herbs showed inhibitory efficacies at different levels, therefore explains their traditional application as the anti-parasite plants. Cassia Alata L and Embelia Ribes Burn showed the best effect on the egg hatching, while Achyranthes Bidentata Blume showed the best effect on the larval movement. In all of 6 tested herbs and 3 tested concentrations, only Ipomoea Hederacea Jacq and Leucaena Glauca Benth extracts at 20 % had good inhibitory effect (more than 70%) on both of egg laying and larval movement. This result suggests that Ipomoea Hederacea Jacq and ...
Background: Care for pregnant and delivering women is a field where unexpected emergencies, as for example emergency caesarean sectio, postpartum bleeding or severe preeclampsia, that may potentially harm both mother and baby, occur. Obstetric emergencies are rare and hence by nature difficult to learn in real life. Therefore, it can be relevant with simulation-based medical education, i.e., training with mannequins and scenarios. In non-systematic reviews it is concluded that repetitive medical simulations are associated with improved learner outcomes. However, many questions on how simulation can optimise learning in emergencies remain unanswered; e.g., how different kinds of simulation settings as 'in situ simulation' versus 'off site simulation' impact learning at the individual and the team level.. Objectives: In a randomised trial on authentic obstetric-anaesthesia teams to study the effect of 'in situ simulation' versus 'off site simulation' on participants learning outcome, ...

Delusion is a common symptom of paranoid schizophrenia ICD10 F20.0, usually combined with hallucinations (either auditory - noises or voices, visual or other perceptions of smell or taste). The most common paranoid symptoms are delusions of persecution, reference, exalted birth, special mission, bodily change, or jealousy. It has been most impressing (and harrowing) to see these patients as a medical student in Vienna at Baumgartner Höhe. Of course I visited Berggasse 19 but there have been more pioneers in Vienna like Krafft-Ebing).. We are arriving now at my main question: What is the difference between delusion and a scientific hypothesis? This question stems from a recent appraisal of the "TH17 revision" of the TH1/TH2 hypothesis by Lawrence Steinman. ...

PACHECO, Sidney et al. Microscale extraction method for HPLC carotenoid analysis in vegetable matrices. Sci. agric. (Piracicaba, Braz.) [online]. 2014, vol.71, n.5, pp.416-419. ISSN 1678-992X. https://doi.org/10.1590/0103-9016-2013-0402.. In order to generate simple, efficient analytical methods that are also fast, clean, and economical, and are capable of producing reliable results for a large number of samples, a micro scale extraction method for analysis of carotenoids in vegetable matrices was developed. The efficiency of this adapted method was checked by comparing the results obtained from vegetable matrices, based on extraction equivalence, time required and reagents. Six matrices were used: tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), carrot (Daucus carota L.), sweet potato with orange pulp (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.), pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) flour. Quantification of the total ...
The incidence of suicide is high among patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and psychosis. A systematic review was performed to investigate the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in reducing suicidal behaviour among patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and psychosis. Cochrane, PubMed and PsycINFO databases were searched to January 2012. Additional materials were obtained from reference lists. Randomised Controlled Trials describing psychosocial interventions for psychotic disorders with attention placebo, treatment as usual (TAU), no intervention or waitlist control groups were included. In total, 11,521 abstracts were identified. Of those, 10 papers describing 11 trials targeting psychosocial interventions for reducing suicidal behaviour in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and psychosic symptoms or disorders met the inclusion criteria. Odds Ratios describing the likelihood of a reduction in suicidal behaviour or ideation ranged from 0.09 to 1.72 at post-test

Industrial processes are often subjected to abnormal events such as faults or external disturbances which can easily propagate via the process units. Establishing causal dependencies among process measurements has a key role in fault diagnosis due to its ability to identify the root cause of a fault and its propagation path. This paper proposes a hybrid nonlinear causal analysis based on nonparametric multiplicative regression (NPMR) for identifying the propagation of an oscillatory disturbance via control loops. The NPMR causality estimator addresses most of the limitations of the linear model-based methods and it can be applied to both bivariate and multivariate estimations without any modifications to the method parameters. Moreover, the NPMR-based estimations can be used to pinpoint the root cause of a fault. The process connectivity information is automatically integrated into the causal analysis using a specialized search algorithm. Thereby, it enables to efficiently tackle industrial ...

BACKGROUND: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) have decreased significantly over the last decade. Further reductions in CLABSI rates should be possible. We describe a multidisciplinary approach to the reduction of CLABSIs. METHODS: This was an observational study of critically ill patients requiring central venous catheters in 8 intensive care units in a tertiary medical center. We implemented a catheter bundle that included hand hygiene, education of providers, chlorhexidine skin preparation, use of maximum barrier precautions, a dedicated line cart, checklist, avoidance of the femoral vein for catheter insertion, chlorhexidine-impregnated dressings, use of anti-infective catheters, and daily consideration of the need for the catheter. Additional measures included root cause analyses of all CLABSIs, creation of a best practice atlas for internal jugular catheters, and enhanced education on blood culture collection. Data were analyzed using the Poisson test and regression. RESULTS:

Clustered gene expression profiles point to the joint contribution of groups of genes to a particular cellular process. However, since genes belong to intricate networks, other features, besides comparable expression patterns, should provide additional information for the identification of functionally similar genes. Results: In this study we perform gene clustering through the identification of Granger causality between and within sets of time series gene expression data. Granger causality is based on the idea that the cause of an event cannot come after its ...
By Monica Sierra/College of Engineering. The fall 2017 Tech Symposium is approaching quickly and student teams are getting ready to show off their projects and compete for different prizes. Highlander Technology, one of the student teams, is excited to show their senior design 2 - "Oxyscope", a video laryngoscope made to improve the medical field and reduce brain damage by facilitating the endotracheal intubation process.. "We chose to work on the video laryngoscope because our research showed that when paramedics use the traditional laryngoscope, only 70% of people are actually able to be intubated, while 100% of people are intubated when using the video laryngoscope," said Stephen Kapp, team leader. "This means that more lives are saved and that brain damaged is reduced since the video laryngoscope makes it faster to intubate.". In addition to Kapp, Highlander Technology team consists of mechanical engineering seniors Victor Mendez, Daniel Oswald, and Cesar Hernandez. The team was drawn to ...
Changes in conscious level have been associated with changes in dynamical integration and segregation among distributed brain regions. Recent theoretical developments emphasize changes in directed functional (i.e., causal) connectivity as reflected in quantities such as 'integrated information' and 'causal density'. Here we develop and illustrate a rigorous methodology for assessing causal connectivity from electroencephalographic (EEG) signals using Granger causality (GC). Our method addresses the challenges of non-stationarity and bias by dividing data into short segments and applying permutation analysis. We apply the method to EEG data obtained from subjects undergoing propofol-induced anaesthesia, with signals source-localized to the anterior and posterior cingulate cortices. We found significant increases in bidirectional GC in most subjects during loss-of-consciousness, especially in the beta and gamma frequency ranges. Corroborating a previous analysis we also found increases in synchrony in
Causality has been a subject of study for a long time. Often causality is confused with correlation. Human intuition has evolved such that it has learned to identify causality through correlation. In this book, four main themes are considered and these are causality, correlation, artificial intelligence and decision making. A correlation machine is defined and built using multi-layer perceptron network, principal component analysis, Gaussian Mixture models, genetic algorithms, expectation maximization technique, simulated annealing and particle swarm optimization. Furthermore, a causal machine is defined and built using multi-layer perceptron, radial basis function, Bayesian statistics and Hybrid Monte Carlo methods. Both these machines are used to build a Granger non-linear causality model. In addition, the Neyman-Rubin, Pearl and Granger causal models are studied and are unified. The automatic relevance determination is also applied to extend Granger causality framework to the non-linear domain. The

Cannabis is known to produce acute, transient psychotic-like experiences. However, it is unclear whether cannabis disproportionately increases the risk of specific types of psychotic experiences and whether genetic predisposition influences the relationship between cannabis use and psychotic experiences. In this cross-sectional study of 109,308 UK Biobank participants, we examined how schizophrenia polygenic risk modulates the association between self-reported cannabis use and four types of self-reported psychotic experiences (auditory hallucinations, visual hallucinations, persecutory delusions, and delusions of reference). Cohort-wide, we found a strong, dose-dependent relationship between cannabis use and all four types of psychotic experiences, especially persecutory delusions. Cannabis users' psychotic experiences tended to be earlier-onset and cause greater distress than non-users', but were not more likely to lead to help-seeking. Participants with high schizophrenia polygenic risk scores showed

The thesis 'Auditory Hallucinations in Youth' is about auditory hallucinations in children and adolescents (hereafter 'youth'). Experiencing an auditory hallucination means that someone hears something in the absence of an identifiable stimulus ('sound'). Auditory hallucinations can differ from undefinable sounds or mumbling to hearing clear music and/or hearing voices whispering or shouting. In the case of 'hearing voices', this is also called auditory verbal hallucinations. Previous research points to the frequent occurrence of auditory hallucinations. However, prevalence rates varied widely. Auditory hallucinations in youth are often transient. Nevertheless, while present, they can cause severe suffering and even be a symptom of psychopathology. Research following this thesis shows that almost one in ten people ever experience an auditory hallucination, with higher rates in children (12.7%) and adolescents (12.4%) than in adults (5.8%) and the elderly (4.5%). About a quarter (23.6%) of young ...

Author summary Why was this study done? Epidemiological studies have shown strong correlations between serum urate (SU) levels and chronic kidney disease (CKD) risk. Elevated SU levels are often found in patients with CKD, but it is not clear whether high serum urate is a cause of kidney disease or just a common co-occurrence. Previous studies examining whether SU levels had a causal effect on CKD were limited due to not having large enough samples to detect a true causal relationship if it existed and/or had limitations related to the methodology. Several clinical trials have been started that aim to use urate-lowering medication to prevent CKD. What did the authors do and find? To determine whether SU level has a causal effect on CKD, we used a methodology known as Mendelian randomization to test whether genetic variants known to increase SU level also increased the risk of CKD. We used multiple datasets to perform Mendelian randomization analyses, which included meta-analyses performed across

The principle of interprofessional learning and practice is a fundamental criterion that guides multidisciplinary teams in the Family Health Strategy (FHS). The professional action, however, seems to be marked by a logic characterized by the narrow boundaries of the territories of each category as a scene of contention between the contradictory logics of professionalization and interprofessional practice. This is understood as the synthesis of a process of integration of knowledge and interprofessional collaboration.. These processes are mediated by affects. Considering that there are several obstacles to the realization of the interprofessional learning and practice, the research aims to understand the dynamics of inter-relationships in the production of care in the family´s health strategy, exploiting the existence of conditions of possibility for the construction of interprofessional learning and practice.. This is a qualitative case study inspired by hermeneutics. The scenario is a study of ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! This study investigates long-term linear and nonlinear causal linkages among eleven stock markets, six industrialized markets and five emerging markets of South-East Asia. We cover the period 1987-2006, taking into account the on-set of the Asian financial crisis of 1997. We first apply a test for the presence of general nonlinearity in vector time series. Substantial differences exist between the pre- and post-crisis period in terms of the total number of significant nonlinear relationships. We then examine both periods, using a new nonparametric test for Granger noncausality and the conventional parametric Granger noncausality test. One major finding is that the Asian stock markets have become more internationally integrated after the Asian financial crisis. An exception is the Sri Lankan market with almost no significant long-term linear and nonlinear causal linkages with other markets. To ensure that any causality is strictly nonlinear in nature, we also examine the
A paracusia, or auditory hallucination, is a form of hallucination that involves perceiving sounds without auditory stimulus. A common form of auditory hallucination involves hearing one or more talking voices. This may be associated with psychotic disorders, and holds special significance in diagnosing these conditions. However, individuals without any psychiatric disease whatsoever may hear voices. There are three main categories into which the hearing of talking voices often fall: a person hearing a voice speak one's thoughts, a person hearing one or more voices arguing, or a person hearing a voice narrating his/her own actions. These three categories do not account for all types of auditory hallucinations. Other types of auditory hallucination include exploding head syndrome and musical ear syndrome. In the latter, people will hear music playing in their mind, usually songs they are familiar with. This can be caused by: lesions on the brain stem (often resulting from a stroke); also, sleep ...
The El Paso/Juarez region is the largest metropolitan area along the United States /Mexico border. The area is in need of a long-term water management plan to include groundwater and surface water, due to the scarcity of fresh groundwater and because it has a population growth higher than the U.S./ Mexico and World population growth rates.. The Hueco and Mesilla Bolsons are the main aquifers and the primary water source for municipal and industrial uses. The City of Juarez in Mexico relies on groundwater for almost one hundred percent of its water needs, while the City of El Paso, Texas relies on groundwater for as much as sixty percent of its water needs. Even though groundwater is the most important source of water for the region, bi-national water management along the United States/Mexico border is focused on surface water and not on groundwater. There are no formal local and/or international agreements with regard to how groundwater should be managed. Current regional planning efforts lack a ...
Background: Syndrome differentiation is one of the substantial characteristics in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) but is still lack of scientific evidence. The inference methods of causal relationship between treatment and clinial effect under real-word study may help.. Objectives: This study aims to assess the efficacy of Phlegm and Stasis Syndrome differentiation method in treating resistant hypertension and explore causal inference in the real-world study.. Research design and methods: It is a multi-center,prospective,two-arm,cohort study including 200 patients with resistant hypertension (doctors' diagnosis based on the American Heart Association criteria 2008).Essential hypertension subjects, aged 18-70 years, blood pressure ,140/90mmHg even used to be on 3 or more medications for a month and diagnosed as Phlegm and Stasis Syndrome will be included.Thiazide diuretics and/or two more antihypertensive agents for 8 weeks, Chinese herbs (for synchronic treating phlegm and blood stasis) and ...

Downloadable! This paper analyzes the causality between inventor productivity and inventor mobility. The results show that the level of education has no influence on inventor productivity. Making use of external sources of knowledge, on the contrary, has a significant effect on productivity. Finally, firm size has a positive impact on productivity. Firm size also influences inventor mobility, although negatively. Whereas existing research implicitly assumes causality to point in one direction, this study ex-ante allows for a simultaneous relationship. To deal with the expected endogeneity problem, instrumental variables techniques will be employed. Results show that mobile inventors are more than four times as productive as non-movers. Whereas mobility increases productivity, an increase in productivity decreases the number of moves.
Higher levels of circulating adiponectin have been related to lower risk of colorectal cancer in several prospective cohort studies, but it remains unclear whether this association may be causal. We aimed to improve causal inference in a Mendelian Randomization meta-analysis using nested case-control studies of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC, 623 cases, 623 matched controls), the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS, 231 cases, 230 controls) and the Nurses' Health Study (NHS, 399 cases, 774 controls) with available data on pre-diagnostic adiponectin concentrations and selected single nucleotide polymorphisms in the ADIPOQ gene. We created an ADIPOQ allele score that explained approximately 3% of the interindividual variation in adiponectin concentrations. The ADIPOQ allele score was not associated with risk of colorectal cancer in logistic regression analyses (pooled OR per score-unit unit 0.97, 95% CI 0.91, 1.04). Genetically determined twofold ...
