Authors describe nineteen shrub-steppe communities in the Middle Fork and East Fork of the Salmon River, Idaho. Bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata) and Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis) occur as dominants or major subdominants throughout the region. Big sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata), threetip sagebrush (A. tripartita), and low sagebrush (A.arbuscula) are dominants, especially in the East Fork and southern Middle Fork. Antelope bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) communities exist throughout the region but are most abundant along the Middle Fork, where the species also occurs as a dominant in the understory of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) stands on drier sites. Cliffy areas in all regions have curlleaf mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius) and little greenbush (Glossopetalon nevadense) stands, reflecting the specialized habitats on which these communities occur. Shadscale saltbush (Atriplex confertifolia) communities occupy the driest ...
Moscow [http://www.moscowchamber.com] is a city in Idaho with a population of around 22,000 people, an agricultural center and the home of the University of Idaho. The surrounding area is generally referred to as the Moscow-Pullman area -- Pullman is a city in Washington, that is fairly symbiotic with Moscow. They are 8 miles apart.
We studied the demography of a population of Northern Idaho ground squirrels (Spermophilus brunneus brunneus) in Adams Co., Idaho. The population was completely censused yearly from 1987 to 1999, during which time it declined from 272 to 10 animals. The finite population growth rate, based on a Leslie matrix model of average life-history parameters, was only 0.72 (i.e., significantly |1.0). Growth rate was more sensitive to proportional changes in juvenile female survival than to any other single life-history parameter. Comparisons with self-sustaining populations of closely related ground squirrel species revealed that juvenile survival and breeding rates of yearling females were anomalously low. We believe that the ultimate cause of the populations collapse was inadequacy of food resources, particularly seeds, due to drying of the habitat and changes in plant species composition, likely the result of fire suppression and grazing. No rescue by immigration occurred,...

Simpsons hallmark legislation in the House of Representatives has been the Central Idaho Economic Development and Recreation Act (CIEDRA), which would create 312,000 acres of wilderness in central Idaho, much of which is currently a wilderness study area. Simpson has faced substantial resistance from groups like the Sierra Club who claim the bill lacks wilderness values[15] because the bill allows for motorized access to certain portions of the wilderness area and some federal land would be transferred to the State of Idaho to promote the economic development of the local community and the recreational use of National Forest land and other public lands in central Idaho.[16] Simpson has also faced opposition from groups who oppose new federal land designations, and wilderness designations particularly because of restricted access to wilderness areas.[15] In August 2015 a revised version of CIEDRA, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and Jerry Peak Wilderness Additions Act, passed Congress ...

Idahos abortion law is strict, but that wont stop at least three major attempts at tightening it up further this year. The current law allows first-trimester abortions for a variety of reasons, but limits second-trimester abortions to in-hospital procedures found to be in the best medical interest of the mother. It bans all third-trimester abortions except those found by two doctors to be necessary to save the womans life, or those where the fetus will not survive if born.

Grazing domestic sheep on the National Forest within the range of wild bighorns is completely irresponsible because of the high risk that livestock diseases will kill off entire bighorn populations, said Scott Lake, Idaho Director for Western Watersheds Project. The Caribou-Targhee Forest was unwilling to stand up to prevent the needless and illegal endangerment of native wildlife on our public lands, so were thankful that we have a robust legal system to protect our wildlife when government agencies fail to do their job ...

By Alan Williams, PT, OTR/L, ATC, CSCS. While my girls were in high school (three girls over the course of eight years), our household lived and breathed volleyball. They played on their school team (which twice was the Idaho state champion and another year was the runner-up) from August through October, then began the club volleyball season, which lasted from November until July. Between practices, games, and traveling to out-of-state tournaments, it was truly a year-round commitment for the entire family, but it was so much fun, we rarely thought of it that way.. With so much volleyball all the time, we became very familiar with all the common injuries faced by volleyball players. As with most injuries, they fall neatly into two categories - acute (meaning sudden or short-term) and chronic (meaning long-term). Heres a quick run-down of the most frequently seen ailments: • Shoulders, shoulders, shoulders! Because so much of the game of volleyball requires overhead movements (setting, ...

Who knew that there is a fine, historic liberal arts college in the state of Idaho? I didnt until a few years back when my research into affordable private colleges kept turning up the College of Idaho as a strong example of this elusive beast. Recently I had a chance to visit in person courtesy of the school along with some 30 fellow independent and high school counselors.. C of I is located in the town of Caldwell in southeastern Idaho, 25 miles west of Boise. It proved to be a lovely campus in a breathtaking region with 1100 students attending. As one would expect, the college features the curricular breadth seen at most liberal arts schools: numerous majors in the arts, sciences, humanities and social sciences, but with the addition of applied programs in business, education, environmental studies, and kinesiology. Additionally, C of I offers three post-graduate programs: two masters level degrees in education plus a brand new physician assistant program.. A recent innovation that intrigued ...

In southwest Idaho the spread of Western juniper is a primary threat to the health of sagebrush-steppe habitats, which support hundreds of species including Greater sage-grouse. The BLM is. ...
If you are denied after you request a reconsideration, then you should ask for a hearing with a Social Security administrative law judge. Your Social Security hearing is the most important phase of your Social Security Disability application. With a Social Security attorney helping, about 65-75% of claimants are approved a their disability hearing. That number is significantly lower for those who dont have help. One of our Social Security Attorneys for Boise would be happy to help you ask for a hearing and make sure you are prepared to appear before and administrative law judge. You should know that at the hearing level, Social Security will no longer assist you in collecting your medical records. Our staff will collect these records for you and make sure that Social Security has all of the relevant medical records in order to find you disabled. The wait for a hearing is typically 9-10 months.. As you can see, applying for disability may take several months, so it is better to get the process ...

In May of 2012, the mother of a patient of Dr. Erich Garlands, a neurologists in Idaho Falls, enlisted the assistance of the Idaho Falls Police after the lawyer representing her daughters malpractice case and Dr. Garland made a mockery of the process by producing fraudulent medical records with the intent to intimidate her into dismissing the case, when the police refused to take a report, she asked the Mayor to step in, and the City Attorney of Idaho Falls, Randall Fife, wrote back in a letter dated May 23, 2013., It would be improper to Prosecute Dr. Garland.. Newly cut logs are 50% water. If you burn logs when they are this wet, a high amount of energy is wasted driving off excess moisture, resulting in very poor combustion, increased pollution, and creosote buildup.. The best fuel is seasoned wood, wood that has been split and dried by air for at least 6 months for softwoods or about 1 year for hardwoods. Seasoned wood has a moisture content of about 20% or less. It tends to be dark in color, cracked on the ends, and light in weight, and its bark is easily broken or peeled. If seasoned wood is not available, manufactured logs made of compressed sawdust are another option.. Do not burn garbage in your stove. Plastics, rubber, paint, oil, painted briquettes, charcoal, and glossy and colored paper release toxics when burned and can cause serious health problems for you, your family, and your neighbors.. Prepare seasoned wood:. ...

CECIL D. ANDRUS GOVERNOR Chris Johnson 3964 Yorktown Way Boise, ID 83706 Dear Mr. Johnson: OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR STATE CAPITOL BOISE 83720 {2081 334-2 1 00 December 29, 1989 Thank you for your recent letter and for sending me your concerns about the wilderness bill that Senator James McClure and I drafted. One thing I learned when I was Secretary of the Department of the Interior is the need to work with people of many viewpoints when addressing issues that concern the preservation or use of natural resources. Because both of us recognize that need, Senator McClure and I tried to find a middle ground on the wilderness issue. Any compromise requires give and take, and it is never easy. However, we both believe that to compromise now is better than to leave the question of the roadless areas to lengthy and expensive litigation--litigation that most likely will make no one happy in the end. Many Idahoans like you are concerned about or directly oppose the latest amendments to the wilderness bill. ...

Shark finning is the practice of cutting off a sharks dorsal fin so that people can use it for shark fin soup or other delicacies. The sharks are often still alive while their fins are cut off with no regard to their pain. They are then tossed back into the ocean where, bleeding and in pain, they either suffocate from lack of mobility or are eaten by other sea predators.. Shark populations have been decimated by finning and many species are nearing extinction. Ecosystems are being upset by the lack of sharks in their waters and we are coming dangerously close to no longer having these beautiful creatures in continued decades.. We are calling for the Idaho State Senate to pass legislation that bans the sale, dsitribution, trade and possession of shark fins. The other West coast states have all passed legislation against shark fins, including Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and California. We want Idaho to join the West coast in becoming more compassionate, thoughtful and responsible in regards to ...

Last Mission: Establishing The Rule of Law In Iraq The last and possibly most important mission for the United States military before it departs Iraq is to establish stability and promote the rule of law. In The Last Mission: Establishing the Rule of Law in Iraq, West Virginia Public Broadcasting producer Chip Hitchcock follows a West Virginia Military Police battalion as it helps to transform the Iraqi police from a force that once served a brutal dictator into one that serves the people and the law. Will eight years of war, more than $700 billion, the sacrifice of thousands of lives and the work of more than a million Americans create a stable democracy in Iraq? Hitchcock (Bridgeport to Baghdad) investigates these questions in his latest documentary, taped while he was embedded with the West Virginia National Guards 151st Military Police Battalion. D ...
The global clinical laboratory services market is expected to reach USD 327.0 billion by 2025, according to the latest report. Clinical labs are observed to adopt international standards thus providing opportunities for interoperability and automation.. Rising concern pertaining to cost control, increasing the pace of R&D for new products, and demand for improvement in quality control parameters has resulted in pressure on lab personnel. Moreover, there has been continuous progress in a number of compounds screened in clinical settings which further demands development in this field.. Improvement and implementation of informatics and automated data management solutions to perform seamless operations are anticipated to drive growth in this market. However, sample preparation and running it through experimental protocols with enhanced productivity is still a challenge in these labs.. Market entities are continuously putting efforts to address this challenge through several means. For instance, ...
A new study provides a first step toward the development of an inexpensive point-of-care diagnostic test to assess the presence of known risk factors for preterm birth in resource-poor areas. The study found that measuring levels of TIMP-1 and D-lactic acid in vaginal secretions may be a non-invasive, cost-effective way to assess the risk for preterm birth due to a short cervix and microbiome composition. The research is published in mBio, an open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.. We have found that there are components in the vagina, proteins and bacteria, that can be used to identify women who are at elevated risk for preterm birth, said Larry Forney, PhD, a member of the Institute of Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies and Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho. There is a need to have a cost-effective diagnostic that can be used to identify women who are at risk for a preterm birth, so ...

Mercury Amalgams: Do you still have a mouth full of them? by Ingri Cassel After two of my dear friends were plagued with health problems that were only minimized by natural healing programs, it was discovered that they were both suffering from acute systemic mercury poisoning and the main source of this insidious poison was in their mouth. Both of these women have a mouthful of aging mercury amalgams. It has been shown that mercury is continually released from mercury dental fillings in the form of mercury vapor and abraded particles. This process is further stimulated and can be increased as much as 15-fold by simply chewing, brushing teeth, hot drinks and even swishing your mouth with a solution of hydrogen peroxide (used to reduce dental plaque.) What we have been lead to believe are silver dental amalgams actually contain 48-55 percent mercury, 33-35 percent silver and various amounts of copper, tin, zinc and other metals. For decades the American Dental Association has steadfastly ...

This is why, Gold willing, I am moving my 6 children and wife to Idaho, Wyoming, or Idaho. My family settled in northern CA in the 1850s, but it has been taken over by foreign invaders and corrupt politicians. The battle for religious liberty in this state was lost a while ago. All it takes is one judge now to overrule the will of the States Citizens. This is just a further degradation of our rights. Next will be confiscation of homilies and church documents and jail time for those that refuse. I hate to leave my friends and family, but that is what the English pilgrims did so many years ago on the Mayflower. As a devout catholic Christian I encourage all to fight for Christianity, but also recognize reality. Persecution has come and may worsen in this state and others like it. If your not prepared for it, or wont be able to handle it, then you might think about leaving also. God bless and believe and trust in our Lord Jesus Christ.. Reply ...

Stock transfers from within or introductions from outside the Snake River were unreported prior to the mid-1900s. Since then, transfers have been extensive. Here, we briefly review the history of artificial propagation and summarize the outplantings of spring and summer chinook salmon in the Snake River.. Chapman et al. (1991) listed 24 facilities in the Snake River that have produced, held, or released various life stages of spring or summer chinook salmon since the early 1960s. Currently, major hatcheries producing spring or summer chinook salmon in the Snake River include Sawtooth, McCall, Rapid River, Pahsimeroi, Dworshak, Kooskia, Lyons Ferry, and Lookingglass. Satellite facilities for brood-stock capture, juvenile rearing or conditioning, and juvenile release are associated with most of the hatcheries. Two additional hatcheries, the Clearwater and Nez Perce Tribal Hatcheries, are planned for construction in the near future. Stocks used in most hatcheries were derived from various exotic ...

By Jessianne Wright EBS Contributor. BOZEMAN - As a population newly removed from the Endangered Species List, the Greater Yellowstone grizzly bears are considered recovered and are ready to be managed as wildlife, say wildlife officials.. The Yellowstone Ecosystem is a totally recovered population, said Gregg Losinski, chair of the Yellowstone Ecosystem Information and Education Subcommittee with Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Genetically, the population is healthy, he added.. The Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team reported there are an estimated 718 grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem during the first meeting of the Yellowstone Grizzly Coordinating Committee on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Pray, Montana.. Frank van Manen, an IGBST research wildlife biologist who prepared the population report, said the estimate is meant to be conservative. When we say 718, that number is probably closer to 1,000, van Manen said.. Researchers have been rigorously tracking the GYE grizzlies since ...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game will intervene if a threatened lawsuit is filed against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its recent decision not to list the westslope cutthroat trout as a threatened species, FWP officials announced today.. Montanas successful and on-going efforts to protect and restore native westslope cutthroat trout has made it unnecessary to add Montanas state fish to the nations growing list of endangered species, said FWP director Pat Graham. Montanas cutthroat trout restoration effort is a model of species protection, planning, action, and tireless commitment to a natural resource preservation effort that is producing real-life results. The recovery and protection of our state fish will continue to be one of the major conservation efforts of this agency, our governor, dozens of landowners and many state, federal and tribal cooperators.. Last week, some Montana-based conservation interests challenged the U.S. Fish and ...

Canada: An expansive area of moderately dense smoke continues to cover much of Canada and stretches eastward through Nunavut towards northern portions of Quebec. Much of this smoke has originated from several large wildfires in the Northwest Territories. North Central US: The Norton Point wildfire in the Shoshone National Forest of Wyoming, was continuing to produce a large area of smoke this evening. Remnant moderate to extremely dense smoke from this fire stretched across the Plains reaching as far east as Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. Cloud cover over portions of the Dakotas hindered smoke analysis in this region but it is likely that smoke was also located in this area. Pacific Northwest: A large area of thin smoke was pushing onshore from British Columbia south towards California and extended as far inland as Idaho and Montana. It is believed that this smoke was transported across the Pacific from Asian wildfires. Hanna THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS ...

The survey was designed to obtain information pertaining to community, neighborhood, local government, and community-based activities in an effort to discover ways to reduce poverty among the Ventures Communities (selected by the Northwest Area Foundation) in the Northwestern states of Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota and Washington. Respondents were asked to identify their place of residence (state, county, and town) and length of time they had lived at that location, as well as a series of questions pertaining to their opinion about the community, the attitudes of persons within the community, and relationships between community members. The survey queried respondents about their community involvement and group memberships, and their connection with resources outside the community, and their neighbors, to solve inner-community issues. Respondents also appraised the quality of government services in the community, trust in local leaders and members of ethnic ...
Its been more than a decade since gray wolves crossed the Idaho border into Oregon in 1999. Northeastern Oregons Imnaha pack has several confirmed livestock kills in Eastern Oregon near the town of Joseph.. That has ranchers there both angry and worried over the future of their business. But newer technology and cooperation with the state is aiding ranchers in tracking the wolves whereabouts.. The presence of wolves in northeastern Oregons Wallowa Valley has changed how livestock is managed by ranchers.. The latest change came about two weeks ago, when the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife began sending daily text messages, describing the general locations of wolves in the Imnaha pack.. So far, 38 ranchers in northeastern Oregon are receiving these wolf-location text messages. The state agency says it does not give exact locations in real time.. Ramona Phillips: ODFW text us every morning and tells us where the collared wolves have been that evening. In one case they texted us and said ...

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Some schools in Montana took their earliest snow day in memory Monday after a blizzard dumped several feet of snow, while plunging temperatures threatened crops across other parts of the Rocky Mountains in an unusually early blast of wintry weather.. Freeze warnings were in effect in parts of Utah and Idaho, and temperatures were expected to drop into the teens and 20s in those states and Montana overnight and Tuesday morning. The cold set in with the lingering fall storm system that dumped snow for three days across much of central and western Montana, including over 4 feet (1 meter) on the Blackfeet Reservation and Glacier National Park.. While parts of the Rockies were dealing with frigid temperatures and unusually early snow, warnings of extreme wildfire danger emerged in eastern Utah and much of Colorado, where temperatures as high as the mid-80s (30 degrees Celsius), gusty winds and dry air were expected to create critical conditions.. Montana Gov. Steve Bullock has ...
