The hybrid from the mating of a female channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) with a male blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) exhibits heterosis for various performance traits which would make it attractive to the commercial aquaculture industry. However, the widespread use of the hybrid in the aquaculture industry has been impeded by reproductive isolating mechanisms that prohibit the adequate production of fry. The primary research objective was to evaluate various genotypes of channel catfish females to determine if certain genotypes with blue catfish produced increased numbers of fry when hybridized. Fry output and other reproductive traits of seventeen genotypes of channel catfish females when crossed with blue catfish males were evaluated. The effect of crossbreeding or selection for body weight for channel catfish females was evaluated to determine heterosis, correlated responses or inbreeding depression for hybrid fry production. No clear effect of strain on percent ovulation, latency ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Trends in Liver and Skin Tumor Prevalence in Brown Bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus) from the Anacostia River, Washington, DC, and Nearby Waters. AU - Pinkney, Alfred E.. AU - Harshbarger, John C.. AU - Rutter, Michael. AU - Sakaris, Peter C.. PY - 2019/2/1. Y1 - 2019/2/1. N2 - The prevalence of liver and skin tumors in brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus) from the Anacostia River (Washington, DC) and nearby areas was determined in 2014, 2015, and 2016. The objectives were to (1) compare tumor prevalence across space and time; (2) analyze the 1992-2016 Chesapeake Bay Tumor Database to identify reference locations and test age, length, weight, and sex as covariates; and (3) explore whether changes in bullhead exposure to contaminants can explain the observed trends. With logistic regression, we reported large statistically significant decreases in liver tumor probabilities in bullheads from the Anacostia CSX Bridge (ANAC) area between 1996 and 2001 (merged: female, 77.8%; male, 48.6%), ...
Fishing for channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) is popular in Nebraska and channel catfish are the most sought after fish species in the Platte River. Anglers on the Platte River are also harvest oriented. Little is known about the effects anglers have on channel catfish population dynamics in the lower Platte River. The goal of this study was to determine if there were effects of angling on channel catfish at two high use fishing areas in the lower Platte River. My first objective was to evaluate differences in relative abundance, size structure, condition, age structure, growth, and mortality between two high use areas (near Fremont and Louisville, NE). I also used a robust design capture-mark-recapture study to estimate density and abundance of channel catfish | 200 mm within a 10-km stretch of the Platte River at each sampling site. The second objective was to assess the 5 year standardized monitoring data for spatial and temporal differences in relative abundance, size structure, condition, age
The infection of channel catfish ovarian cells with channel catfish virus results in the redistribution of all cytoskeletal elements during virus-induced syncytium formation. Actin filaments are normally arranged as large stress fibres, even during early stages of infection, but become redistributed as densely staining regions near the centre of the syncytium in latent infection. Microtubules and vimentin filaments (easily visible in early infection) lose all visible organization during syncytium formation. Stabilization of microtubules with taxol results in the production of elongate syncytia with regularly organized microtubules. Conversely, disruption of microtubules with nocodazole inhibits cell fusion and causes a reduction in infectious virus production. This reduction upon treatment with nocodazole, and the subsequent rescue of virus production upon addition of taxol indicates that viral replication relies upon the presence of microtubules.
Feed represents the largest cost input in intensive catfish Ictalurus punctatus production. Daily feed rations are generally related to stocking densities, up to a point at which high feeding rates begin to affect water quality. There has been no prior research to analyze the economic interactions b...
The efficacy of hydrogen peroxide in controlling mortality associated with external columnaris infections on walleye Sander vitreus (formerly Stizostedion vitreum) and channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus fingerlings was evaluated in two on-site trials. Microscopic examination of skin scrapes before treatment confirmed the presence of bacteria indicative of columnaris disease. In separate trials, walleyes (12 g) and channel catfish (2.3 g) were exposed to a total of three every-other-day hydrogen peroxide treatments of 0, 50, 75, or 100 mg/L for 60 min. Each treatment regimen was tested in triplicate, and each replicate contained 13 walleyes or 26 channel catfish. Hydrogen peroxide exposures of 50 mg/L for 60 min significantly increased walleye survival relative to that at other treatment concentrations, including the controls. Exposures of 50, 75, or 100 mg/L of hydrogen peroxide for 60 min significantly increased channel catfish survival in comparison with that of controls. These trials indicated that
Henneguya gurlei was isolated from Ameiurus nebulosus captured in North Carolina and redescribed using critical morphological features and 18S small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rDNA) gene sequence. Plasmodia are white, spherical, or subspherical, occur in clusters, measure up to 1.8 mm in length, and are located on the dorsal, pectoral, and anal fins. Histologically, plasmodia are located in the dermis and subdermally, and the larger cysts disrupt the melanocyte pigment layer. The spore body is lanceolate, 18.2 ?? 0.3 ??m (range 15.7-20.3) in length, and 5.4 ?? 0.1 ??m (range 3.8-6.1) in width in valvular view. The caudal appendages are 41.1 ?? 1.1 ??m (range 34.0-49.7) in length. Polar capsules are pyriform and of unequal size. The longer polar capsule measures 6.2 ?? 0.1 ??m (range 5.48-7.06), while the shorter is 5.7 ?? 0.1 ??m (range 4.8-6.4) in length. Polar capsule width is 1.2 ?? 0.03 ??m (range 1.0-1.54). Channel Catfish are widely distributed across North America and highly valued as a sport fish and for food. While most Channel Catfish fisheries are managed under liberal harvest regulations, the Red River of the North (Red River) in Manitoba, Canada is managed with restrictive harvest regulations to promote a trophy fishery. Two barriers (dams) are present on the main stem of the Red River and may fragment the population to some degree. My objectives were to: 1) analyze population dynamics of the trophy Channel Catfish population on the lower Red River, 2) compare population characteristics of Channel Catfish in selected reaches throughout the Red River in Manitoba, and 3) determine movement characteristics of Channel Catfish and the permeability of a dam on the lower Red River. We compared our results to the most recent studies on Channel Catfish in the Red River, and also to range-wide age, growth, and mortality statistics. Channel Catfish in the lower Red River commonly reached ages | 20, grew
Immunoglobulin light (IGL) chain genes encoding sigma and lambda from channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and lambda from Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, were identified by mining of expressed sequence tag databases, 5-RACE and RT-PCR protocols. cDNAs for each of these IGL chains encode typical variable (V), joining (J), and constant (C) regions and Southern blot analyses and genomic sequencing show that genes encoding these isotypes, like other teleost IGL genes, are found in a cluster organization of one or two V gene segments, followed by single J and C gene segments, all in the same transcriptional orientation. However, unlike the teleost kappa genes, genes encoding catfish sigma and lambda are few in number and the two isotypes are each encoded by only two clusters. Similarly, Atlantic cod lambda genes are predicted to be encoded by two or three clusters. As expected, sequence and phylogenetic analyses comparisons demonstrate that catfish V sigma and C sigma genes are most similar to V sigma ...

In 2011, global aquaculture production of food fish comprising channel catfish and Nile tilapia reached 62.7 million tonnes with an estimated value of US$ 130 billion. As aquaculture technology intensifies to meet market demands, the economic losses in the aquaculture industry from bacterial diseases continue to grow. Of those bacterial diseases, columnaris has been reported as one of the major causes of massive economic losses in channel catfish and Nile tilapia farming. In the search for alternative environmentally-friendly treatments, probiotics have been suggested as possible alternatives to chemotherapeutants and antibiotics. Towards this goal, this research evaluated the effects of the commercially-available probiotics as a feed additive on channel catfish and Nile tilapia growth performance and protection against columnaris (Flavobacterium columnare) under laboratory conditions. The first study was conducted to evaluate the influence of the probiotic product PondToss™ on growth ...

In: Proceedings, Aquaculture America Conference, March 1-5, 2010. p. 445 Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) egg masses are typically incubated in baskets that are suspended within metal troughs with water that is agitated and pushed around the eggs with paddles. A limiting factor in the successful incubation of channel catfish eggs is the absorption of oxygen to the developing embryos; sub-optimal levels of dissolved oxygen in the water results in premature hatching and increased deformities and mortality of developing catfish eggs. We designed and tested the ability of a new vertical-lift incubator (the See-Saw) to incubate channel catfish egg masses. Angle-aluminum racks were placed inside paired adjacent hatchery troughs with three hinged-lid baskets positioned in each rack. The racks were ...

Comparative genomics is a powerful tool to transfer genomic information from model species to related non-model species. Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) is the primary aquaculture species in the United States.. Its existing genome resources such as genomic sequences generated from next generation sequencing, BAC end sequences (BES), physical maps, linkage maps, and integrated linkage and physical maps using BES-associated markers provide a platform for comparative genomic analysis between catfish and other model teleost fish species.. This study aimed to gain understanding of genome organizations and similarities among catfish and several sequenced teleost genomes using linkage group 8 (LG8) as a pilot study.. ...

Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS), caused by virulent clonal isolates of Aeromonas hydrophila (vAh), is emerging as a major disease in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) aquaculture in the Southeastern United States. Predisposing conditions leading to vAh infection in catfish were however largely unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate factors that predispose catfish to vAh infection and to understand the pathogenesis of MAS. Results of this study indicated that wounding on the fish body surface was one of the key factors that predisposed catfish to vAh infection via waterborne route. Relatively uniform wounds were created by clipping part of the fish adipose fin. Adipose fin clipped (Af-clipped) fish behaved normally in terms of swimming and feeding and no mortality occurred in the control treatment (a mock challenge). When subjected to challenge in vAh-infected water, Af-clipped fish were highly susceptible, showing typical symptoms ...
1. The skin and fins of Ameiurus, irrespective of their original state, take on the dark coloration (dispersion of melanophore pigment) whenever they are triturated. Hence oil extracts can be made from these parts only in the dark condition.. 2. Olive oil extracts from the skin and fins of dark Ameiurus when injected under the skin of light-tinted individuals induce the formation of temporary dark splotches in an otherwise light skin.. 3. These splotches result from the dispersion of pigment in the melanophores, both epidermal and dermal, in the region of the injection.. 4. On the spontaneous disappearance of these splotches, which ordinarily occurs a few days after their formation, the melanophore pigment reassumes its concentrated state.. 5. Newly formed dark splotches in Ameiurus may be obliterated by an injection of adrenalin and will return spontaneously after the adrenalin has disappeared.. 6. From these several tests it is concluded that the nervous factor in the dispersion of the ...
ABSTRACT: The adhesion dynamics of Flavobacterium columnare to fish tissues were evaluated in vivo by immersion challenge followed by bacterial plate count and confirmatory observations of gill-adhered bacterial cells using scanning electron microscopy. Adhesion of F. columnare genomovar I (ARS-1) and II (BGFS-27) strains to skin and gill of channel catfish Ictalurus punctactus and gill of zebrafish Danio rerio was compared. At 0.5 h post-challenge, both strains adhered to gill of channel catfish at comparable levels (106 colony forming units [CFU] g-1), but significant differences in adhesion were found later in the time course. Channel catfish was able to effectively reduce ARS-1 cells on gill, whereas BGFS-27 persisted in gill beyond the first 24 h post-challenge. No significant difference was found between both strains when adhered to skin, but adhered cell numbers were lower (103 CFU g-1) than those found in gill and were not detectable at 6 h post-challenge. Adhesion of BGFS-27 cells to ...

Mr. Pinkney and his researchers began tracking a group of 10 brown bullhead catfish July 20, after two studies conducted over the past decade found that more than half of the catfish caught in the Anacostia River had liver tumors. I think these results indicate the seriousness of the problem in the Anacostia, Mr. Pinkney said. Tumor rates in freshwater and saltwater fish have been used as an indicator of pollution. Experts say anything over 9 percent indicates high levels of pollution. The most recent study, completed in 1996, found that 55 percent of the 60 catfish caught swimming in the Anacostia River had liver tumors. Most of the tumors were microscopic; however, some measured nearly a centimeter long, said John Harshbarger, a fish pathologist at George Washington University Medical Center, who conducted one of the studies. If 55 percent of people had liver tumors, theyd be worried about it, Mr. Harshbarger said. It would be a catastrophe. This is much the same way, except were ...

Interpretive Summary: A rapid bioassay was used to evaluate extracts from the stem bark of plant found in Kenya for antibacterial activities against fish pathogenic bacteria. Two natural compounds were isolated from the extracts and discovered to possess antibacterial activities against a species of fish pathogenic bacteria which causes a common disease in pond-raised catfish and several other species of freshwater fish.. Technical Abstract: The pond-raised channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) industry in the United States of America can incur losses of over a $100 million annually due to bacterial diseases including columnaris disease caused by Flavobacterium columnare. One management approach available to catfish producers is the use of medicated-feed containing antibiotics. However, the negative attributes of antibiotic use in agriculture include public concerns and the potential development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Therefore, the discovery of environmentally-safe natural compounds ...

The fumonisins represent a group of mycotoxins produced predominantly by Fusarium moniliforme species. The toxic effects in fish remains still poorly understood. In one study, channel catfish fed F. moniliforme culture material containing 313 ppm of fumonisin B1 (FB1) for 5 weeks revealed minimal adverse effects27. Conversely, another study28 reported that dietary levels of FB1 of 20 ppm or above are toxic to year-1 and year-2 channel catfish. After 10 and 14 weeks, respectively, year-1 and year-2 catfish fed 20 ppm or more of FB1 in the diet had lower weight gain compared to the control, and those fish fed diets with levels of 80 ppm and above showed significantly lower hematocrits and red and white blood cells than those fed lower doses29. In 2000 it was found that in channel catfish, diets containing 20 ppm of moniliformin (MON) or FB1 significantly reduced body weight gain after 2 weeks30, where FB1 is more toxic than MON to channel catfish. Adverse effects of fumonisin contaminated diets ...

So Grandpa Emry, in his soap-weed straw hat, bib-overalls, and nary a tooth in his happy face would drop his hook and wait and watch. Occasionally, he would look up at us kids and grin, wink, and then return to his concentration. As a bullhead approached his hook, Grandpa would get more and more focused. Just at the right moment…FLING! In his excitement, instead of a quick, short jerk to set the hook, he would instead give a quick heave-ho and the fish would fly out of the water and sometimes up into a tree behind him. His long limber willow pole provided plenty of leverage and whip action. On one occasion, the bullhead, only biting worm and not hooked flew high into the air. It flopped and flailed on a high, southward trajectory far into an alfalfa field in the bottomland. We kids laughed hysterically and chased off into the alfalfa in search of the high-flying bullhead. With the help of Grandpas dog, Charlie, we found the fish and returned it to Grandpas bucket. Grandpa Emry was always as ...

The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, in which the US and Canada agreed to restore and preserve the biolgoical, physical and chemical integrity of the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem, was first signed in 1972. In 1987, a Protocol was signed by both governments which defined Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOC) as geographic areas that fail to meet the general or specific objectives of the agreement where such failure has caused or is likely to cause impairment or beneficial use of the areas ability to support aquatic life. The U.S. and Canadian governments identified 43 such areas; 26 in the U.S., 12 in Canada and five shared between the U.S. and Canada on connecting river systems. The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, as amended via the 1987 protocol, directs the two federal governments to cooperate with state and provincial governments to develop and implement Remedial Action Plans (RAPs) for each AOC. The Protocol also called for reports on restorative progress and for the International ...
An enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect and quantify Edwardsiella ictaluri in asymptomatic carrier channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and was compared to conventional culture on agar. Tissue homogenization, using 0.5% Triton X-100 in 0.05 M phosphate buffered saline (pH 7.2), clarified tissue slurries, improved filterability and permitted live bacteria to be filtered from 1 g or more of channel catfish organ tissue. Treatment of tissues with Tween 20 or trypsin did not allow improved filtration or bacterial counts. Bacteria captured on 0.45 µm nitrocellulose membrane filters were cultured on E. ictaluri medium agar. Bacterial colonies on the filters were tagged with a monoclonal antibody to E. ictaluri on which an ELISA was performed. The ELISA substrate 3,3diaminobenzidine facilitated rapid bacterial colony forming unit (CFU) counts without magnification, permitted semipermanent records of isolations, and enabled microscopic confirmation following mounting with ...
Title: Physical map construction and physical characterization of channel catfish genome. Name: Xu, Peng. Degree: PhD. Chair: Zhanjiang Liu. Resides: FAA Library. University: Auburn. Location: Auburn, Alabama. Date: 2007. Pages: 111. Keywords: channel catfish genome, gene mapping, genetics. Abstract: Catfish is the major aquaculture species in the United States. To enhance genome studies involving linkage mapping, comparative mapping and linkage map and physical map integration, over 20,000 Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) end sequences were generated and a BAC-based physical map of the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus Rafinesque) genome was constructed using four color fluorescence-based fingerprinting. A total of 25,195 BAC ends were sequenced, generating 20,366 clean BAC end sequences (BES) with an average reading length of 557 bp. The total reading length of 11,414,601 bp represented approximately 1.2% of the catfish genome. Based on this survey, the catfish genome was found to be ...
This report comprises two studies conducted from 2012 to 2015 to estimate population size, survival rates, and movements of invasive blue catfish in Chesapeake Bay tributaries. The first study of population-size and survival was conducted in the James River, VA (Population Size and Survival Rates of Invasive Blue Catfish in Tidal Waters of the James River Subestuary). The second study on movement and survival of blue catfish was conducted in the Potomac River, the natural boundary between Maryland and Virginia (Movement Patterns and Survival Rate of Blue Catfish in a Non-Native Habitat Estimated with a Tagging Study). The Executive Summary of this report provides a synopsis of both studies.
Traditional pond-spawning, which is effectively used to produce channel catfish fry, is ineffective for consistent, large-scale production of hybrid fry because of reproductive barriers (behavioral, physiological etc.) that prevent spawning between blue and channel catfish. Although there have been reports of successful spawning in brood ponds stocked with male blue catfish and female channel catfish, the occurrence of pond-spawning is very rare and not reliable for commercial hatchery production. Unless some future development dramatically improves the spawning rate in traditional brood ponds, production of hybrid fry will depend on the use of hormones to induce ovulation (final maturation and release of eggs) in females, manual stripping of eggs, and manual fertilization of the eggs with blue catfish sperm (Tave and Smitherman 1982, Dunham et al. 2000 ...

Title: Second generation of catfish genetic linkage map and integration of catfish genetic linkage and physical maps using BAC-anchored microsatellites. Name: Ninwichian, Parichart. Degree: PhD. Chair: Liu, Zhanjiang. Resides: FAA library. University: Auburn. Location: Auburn University. Date: 2012. Pages: 167. Keywords: Map integration; channel catfish; genetic linkage map; BES; physical map. Abstract: Integration of physical and linkage maps is a critical step in building necessary genome resources for fine mapping of QTL, comparative genomics, and accurate and efficient whole genome assembly. Previously, we have established both linkage maps and a physical map for channel catfish,. Ictalurus punctatus, the dominant aquaculture species in the U.S. Here we added 2,030 BAC-end sequence-derived microsatellites from 1,481 physical map contigs to a high-density linkage map also containing singleton BES, EST, and anonymous microsatellite markers as well as SNPs. Average marker density across the 29 ...
Fingerling purchases must be made very carefully. This issue should be given special attention since starting with poor quality fingerlings will be problematic even with the best management thereafter. Fingerling management before purchase should be investigated since nutrition and stocking densities are important to the future health of the catfish. Deliveries of catfish fingerlings should be checked for signs of disease on arrival. Proper treatments should be administered or the fish returned to the source for treatment if disease is discovered. Stocking the fingerling at the right time is important. Hot weather and ESC seasons should be avoided. If the fingerlings are stocked at a time when they will not quickly respond to feeding, diseases may strike the fish as they become nutritionally weakened. Stocking densities of 5,000 to 10,000 catfish fingerlings per acre are used in the industry, but the lower stocking densities are less likely to result in disease experiences.. ...

These vaccines may be used not only to vaccinate fish against Edwardsiella ictaluri or Pasteurella piscicida, but also to serve as vectors to present antigens from other pathogens to the fish, thereby serving as vaccines against other pathogens as well, with no risk of infection by reversion to the virulent form of the pathogen in which the antigen occurs naturally. ...

Catalyzes the attachment of isoleucine to tRNA(Ile). As IleRS can inadvertently accommodate and process structurally similar amino acids such as valine, to avoid such errors it has two additional distinct tRNA(Ile)-dependent editing activities. One activity is designated as pretransfer editing and involves the hydrolysis of activated Val-AMP. The other activity is designated posttransfer editing and involves deacylation of mischarged Val-tRNA(Ile).

A linear epitope on catfish IgM has been defined as the docking site for the catfish soluble FcR (IpFcRI). trout (Ig), poultry (Ig), mouse (Ig, Ig1, Ig2a, Ig2b, and Ig), rabbit (Ig and Ig) and goat (Ig) IgH stores, and mouse Ig and Ig, and poultry Ig IgL stores. IpFcRI destined mouse IgM also, IgG and IgA subclasses when examined less than local circumstances. (Shen et al., 2004; Shen et al., 2003), which demonstrated that catfish NK-like cells had been equipped with IgM and had been positive for just two Ig light (L) string isotypes. Since these cells didnt communicate message for either Ig weighty (H) or IgL stores, it had been hypothesized that serum IgM can be bound on the surface with a putative FcR. Furthermore, when the top bound IgM was replaced by catfish anti-trinitrol-phenol (TNP) IgM antibodies, these specifically armed NK cells were able to kill TNP-labeled target cells by ADCC (Shen et al., 2003). More recently, we identified a catfish FcR homolog, termed IpFcRI, which represents ...

Hundreds of these are commonly kept by fishkeepers. Catfish account for one out of every 20 known vertebrate animals.. Thanks to projects such as the All Catfish Species Inventory (ACSI), which is funding research by catfish ichthyologists, descriptions of new species are at an all-time high. Among the most notable recent discoveries is Lacantunia enigmatica, which was placed in its own family.. This item was first published in the September 2009 issue of Practical Fishkeeping magazine. The serine/threonine kinase IL-1R-associated kinase (IRAK)4 is a critical regulator of innate immunity. We have identified BMS-986126, a potent, highly selective inhibitor of IRAK4 kinase activity that demonstrates equipotent activity against multiple MyD88-dependent responses both in vitro and in vivo. BMS-986126 failed to inhibit assays downstream of MyD88-independent receptors, including the TNF receptor and TLR3. Very little activity was seen downstream of TLR4, which can also activate an MyD88-independent pathway. In mice, the compound inhibited cytokine production induced by injection of several different TLR agonists, including those for TLR2, TLR7, and TLR9. The compound also significantly suppressed skin inflammation induced by topical administration of the TLR7 agonist imiquimod. BMS-986126 demonstrated robust activity in the MRL/lpr and NZB/NZW models of lupus, inhibiting multiple pathogenic responses. In the MRL/lpr model, robust activity was observed with the combination of ...

Standard 2 -- Page 13 You may wish to mention that right-to-farm legislation exists and that, similar to Standard 1, the farm should be aware of such legislation. The Florida law is not open-ended to allow a farm to go wild in their production of noise or odors, but does serve to provide Florida farms, established and operating, prior to the appearance of new residents, with protection from nuisance lawsuits. An Internet search turned up this analysis: http://www.farmfoundation.org/1998NPPEC/hipp.pdf. Standard 4 -- Page 14 Reasons for Standard: Please include turbidity impacts on fishery resources. I would think that you would mention that pond-oriented production system does provide stormwater storage, waterfowl resting areas, riparian wildlife habitats, and other environmental benefits. These criteria would carry weight with the uninformed if you could provide a ...
