Data was extracted from a prospective provincial head and neck cancer database. Demographic, survival data, and pre- and post-treatment thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were obtained for patients diagnosed with ES-LSCC from 2008-2012. Inclusion criteria consisted of patients diagnosed clinically with ES-LSCC (T1 or 2, N0, M0) treated with curative intent. The purpose of this study was to estimate the incidence of cases with transient and permanent CH in Hamadan, Iran. In our study, the incidence of CH is found to be 1/1250 of live birth. Of the 164 patients 105 cases (64 %) were proven to have permanent CH and 59 cases (36%) had transient hypothyroidism. The frequency of CH as well as transient hypothyroidism was relatively high in our study. Our data confirm the findings of previous studies regarding the high prevalence of hypothyroidism in Iran (15-18). For example, a meta-analysis study by Veisani et al. (18) revealed that the overall incidence of CH in Iran is 2/1000 of live births. Since the most common etiology of CH was dyshormonogenesis as indicated in the studies conducted by Hashemipour et al. (9) and Karamizadeh et al. Anaesthetic management of the premature infant is a challenge. This is owing to the immaturity of his or her organ systems and the possible presence of sequelae of premature birth, such as broncho pulmonary dysplasia, apnoea, patent ductus arteriosus and intra ventricular haemorrhage. The premature infant is at risk of developing postoperative apnoea, hypothermia and hypoglycaemia until his or her post gestational age is more than 60 weeks. Conditions such as congenital bilateral cataract and congenital hypothyroidism may be associated with other birth defects and syndromes. Recommendations for early cataract surgery may necessitate an aesthetising premature infants with post conceptional ages less than 60 weeks, or those who have had recently diagnosed medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism. Although in many studies, the relationship between autoimmune hypothyroidism (Hashimoto) and Vitamin D deficiency was shown, no research has been performed on the role of vitamin D in non-autoimmune hypothyroidism. This was a case-control study in Endocrinology clinic of Jahrom (south of Iran). The patients with Hashimoto (n = 633) and non-Hashimoto hypothyroidism (n = 305), along with a control group (n = 200) were evaluated. 25(OH) D level, T3 and T4 levels were studied and Anti TPO and Anti TG tests were performed. The results of vitamin D level were analyzed and interpreted using SPSS in terms of the cause of hypothyroidism (immune and non-immune). The results of the study showed a significantly lower level of vitamin D in both immune and non-immune Hashimotos thyroiditis (HT) in comparison to healthy controls (P | 0.05). One important challenge in understanding the epidemiology of CH is that some newborns will have transient CH, a temporary depression of thyroid hormone concentrations that can last from several days to several months. In a newsletter I received from the Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers, they state that there is mounting evidence that hypothyroidism is present in the majority of, and possibly all, Fibromylagia & CFS patients. The problem is that standard blood testing that consists of TSH, T4 and T3 does not detect it and patients are told repeatedly that their thyroid levels are fine. Additionally, the ameliorating role of folic acid supplementation was investigated. Fifty male albino rats were randomly divided into five groups (group I, control; group II, folic acid; group III, 0.05% propylthiouracil-induced hypothyroid rats; group IV, Co-treatment; group V post-treatment). There was a significant decrease in plasma T3, body weight, fluid and food intakes, folic acid, ALT, total thiol and tFRAP in hypothyroid rats as compared to control group. A common medication used for the treatment of diabetes called metformin may have effects on the thyroid. Some studies suggest that the TSH level is lower in patients with diabetes on metformin. This may be important in patients with previously diagnosed hypothyroidism on thyroid hormone. The current study was done to look at the effect of two different diabetes medications, metformin or a sulfonylurea drug, on the TSH of a large number of people some of whom take levothyroxine to treat hypothyroidism.

We report on 2 cases of hypothyroidism presenting clinical symptoms that occurred after radiotherapy for cancer of the head and neck and on the results of estimating thyroid function in patients with head and neck cancer who received radiotherapy.. The first patient underwent total laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer without sacrificing the thyroid gland and partial gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Radiotherapy of the neck was carried out postoperatively.. Two years later, the patient developed chest pain; pericardial effusion was detected, leading to a diagnosis of myxedema caused by hypothyroidism. The second patient received radiotherapy alone for laryngeal cancer. Two months later, low serum sodium concentration and anemia were detected in this patient..
