Penis Curvature in Hypospadias vs. Isolated Penis Curvature. Penis Curvature in Hypospadias vs. Isolated Penis Curvature Left picture: In this case a typical curvature combined with a hypospadias is present; it occurs often in severe types of hypospadias. Right picture: The diagnosis is an isolated curvature of the penis without a recognizable hypospadias. For this differential diagnosis the following abnormalities of the local findings are useful: Left picture: A prepuce is not recognizable on the ventral side, but there is a surplus of the visible part of the foreskin on the dorsal side, forming a ridge like a cape. Besides the external urethral orifice which is displaced in a ventral and proximal direction, the described elements are characteristic; compare them with the figure at the bottom with a ventral view of the penis of another patient with nearly identical findings . Right picture: Here, the described elements are missing; therefore, the terms penis curvature without hypospadias or ...
Penoscrotale Hypospadias vs. Burried Penis (Micropenis). Penoscrotale Hypospadias vs. Burried Penis (Micropenis) Left picture: Here, a severe type of hypospadias is present, a so-called penoscrotal hypospadias. Right picture: The diagnosis is a so-called burried penis, which means a penis that seems to be a micropenis due to or hidden by obesity. Left picture: Only a precise examination yields informations on the actual pathology and allows to discard the first impression of intersexual external genitals. In the additional figure at the bottom the penis is elevated, and the scrotum unfolded. In both scrotal halves a testis of normal size is visible and palpable. The penis has a ventral curvature, its ventrally split foreskin is adherent to the right circumference of the glans, and the urethral orifice lies at the beginning of the bifid (ventrally split) scrotum. Right picture: In the additional picture the suprapubic fatty tissue has been moved to the top, revealing a developed penis ...
In most cases the foreskin is also underdeveloped and does not wrap completely around the penis, leaving the underside of the glans penis uncovered. There may also be downward bending of the penis, commonly referred to as chordee. This is found in 10% of distal hypospadias[5] and 50% of proximal hypospadias[6] at the time of surgery. The scrotum may be higher than usual to either side of the penis, called penoscrotal transposition, adding to the abnormal overall appearance.. Hypospadias is thought to result from failure of the urinary channel to completely tubularize to the end of the penis. The cause of hypospadias is not known. Most often, it is the only abnormal finding, although in about 10% of cases hypospadias may be part of a syndrome with multiple abnormalities.. The most common associated defect is an undescended testicle, which has been reported in approximately 3% of infants with distal hypospadias and 10% of those having proximal hypospadias. The combination of hypospadias and an ...
Occurring in 1 in 300 males, hypospadias is an abnormality of the penis, with 3 basic features. Firstly, the urethra fails to reach the tip of the penis and opens somewhere on its undersurface. This can be anywhere from just below the tip, and as far as in front of the anus, in a very severe case. In addition, the foreskin is normally deficient on the undersurface of the penis, and the penis itself is curved in a downward direction. This latter curvature may either be due to the short skin on the undersurface, tethering the penis down, or to an inherent curvature of the penis itself, characteristic in more severe cases.. The majority of hypospadias is found towards the end of the penis, and can be corrected with a single stage procedure. More severe hypospadias and in particular, that where the hole is more highly located and there is an associated bend of the penis, (or chordee), require a 2 stage procedure. The first stage straightens the penis and a graft is placed on the undersurface, ...
Parents usually ask the Urologist that their child urinates finely and has bowel movements just fine. So why are we having the surgery done if it doesnt hurt him and he urinates just fine? Simple answer to these parents is Surgery is essential because Hypospadias can cause problems as he gets older. Problems are listed below: 1. Irregular urine stream .He would have to pee sitting down his whole life. 2. His penis would look different than other boys. 3. It could potentially create fertility issues. The opening of the penis is not close to the cervix as a result of which the sperm is not in the right place to cause pregnancy. 4. If the penis has chordee (downward curvature of the penis) it becomes very painful, difficult or even impossible to have intercourse as an adult.. If the hypospadias needs to be repaired, this is done by surgery. The aim is to repair and reconstruct the urethra. Depending on the degree of the hypospadias, the surgery can range from relatively simple to very challenging. ...

Hypospadias is a congenital abnormality of the penis in boys. It is common, occuring in 1 out of 150 - 200 boys (approx). The 3 main abnormalities in hypospadias are 1)the abnormal position of urinary meatus (opening) on the undersurface of the penis 2)abnormal bend (curvature) of the penis (called Chordee) 3)abnormal foreskin distribution on the penis (usually only half of the penis has foreskin in children with hypospadias).
This is part of our series on hidden or stigmatised health conditions in men. Read the other articles in the series here.. Hypospadias is a malformation of the penis that is present from birth. In hypospadias, the opening of the urethra (the tube that drains urine from the bladder) is misplaced somewhere along the underside of the penis instead of being at the tip.. The degrees of severity vary, depending on the position of the opening. It can sit within the glans (the tip of the penis), on the shaft of the penis itself, or even within the scrotum, between the two testes.. Although the incidence varies among regions, hypospadias affects approximately one in 250 male children. Of these, 70% comprise less severe forms, where the opening is relatively close to the tip of the penis, while 30% are affected by more severe forms.. Diagnosis. Most cases are diagnosed at birth or during childhood, when parents or doctors find the penis is abnormal during a physical examination. However, it is not ...
PURPOSE: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the functional and cosmetic outcome of tubularized incised plate urethroplasty (TIPU) with preputial reconstruction and preservation of a thin distal urethra when applicable. METHODS: The records of 64 boys with hypospadias, who underwent TIPU between 2000 and 2007 were analyzed. 33 (52%) underwent foreskin reconstruction and a thin distal urethra was preserved and incorporated in 19 (30%) patients. The Hypospadias Objective Scoring Evaluation (HOSE), Pediatric Penile Perception Score (PPPS), and uroflowmetry were evaluated in 55 boys (86%) after a mean of 4 ...
What is hypospadias? Hypospadias is a male birth defect in which the opening of the tube that carries urine from the body ( urethra ) develops abnormally, usually on the underside of the penis. The opening can occur anywhere from just below the end of the penis to the scrotum. What causes hypospadias? In most cases, the...
Transgenerational effects of diethylstilbestrol (DES) have been reported in animals and humans. Alerted by two case reports, Klip H et al conducted a cohort study of all sons of a Dutch cohort of 16 284 women with a diagnosis of fertility problems and obtained a 67% response rate; their findings suggest an increased risk of hypospadias in the sons of women exposed in utero to DES. The mothers of 205 boys reported DES exposure in utero, and four of these boys were reported to have hypospadias. This defect was reported in only 8 of the remaining 8729 sons (prevalence ratio 21.3 (95% confidence interval (CI) 6.5-70.1)).. In a retrospective study, we analysed 32 406 computerized obstetrical and pediatric files at Port-Royal Maternity Center, covering births from 1 January 1993 to 31 December 2002. We compared the prevalence rate of hypospadias among 17 633 boys of mothers with and without in utero DES exposure.. The mothers of 240 boys had reported DES exposure in utero. Three (1.23%) were reported ...

PURPOSE: To analyze agreement on postoperative complications after hypospadias surgery according to medical records and parents reports. MATERIALS & METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, data were collected from 409 children who received an initial one-stage hypospadias correction in the Radboudumc, The Netherlands. Postoperative complications according to medical records were compared with parent-reported complications in an online questionnaire. Main complications studied were wound-related complications, urinary tract infections, fistulas, stenosis, and prepuce-related complications. Agreement was determined by Cohens kappa coefficient. RESULTS: Slightly less complications were mentioned in medical records (37%) compared to parents reports (42%). Overall agreement was moderate (kappa=0.50, 95% confidence interval (CI):0.41-0.59), but poor for some specific complications. Agreement was higher for complications that needed reoperation compared to when no reoperation was performed ...

Results Multivariable analysis showed a strong association with potential maternal occupational exposure to heavy metals with an over twofold increased risk of hypospadias (OR 2.6; 95% CI 1.3 to 5.2), and women exposed to phthalates were more likely to have an affected son (OR 1.2; 95% CI 0.8 to 1.7). Compared with mild or isolated cases, the risks of moderate-severe hypospadias or multiple defects were increased up to two- and fivefold, respectively, with maternal exposure to most types of EDCs. Paternal occupational exposures to polychlorinated organic (OR 1.3; 95% CI 1.0 to 1.8) and bi-phenolic (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.0 to 2.6) compounds were also possible risk factors. ...

My Son was born with a congenital birth defect - Hypospadias. We were not aware of Hypospadias in the beginning and even the regular pediatrician also bluffed us that it is a minor issue and can be rectified with small surgery. Finally my son underwent the surgery for the first time in a childrens hospital on July 30th 2011 with a pediatric surgeon. Its our bad luck to say that the surgery got failed on the second day itself and my son literally faced lots and lots of problems, in other words he has seen hell in the hospital. We did not understand the situation going on and finally my son got discharged after 11 days by seeing hell and back to home ...

In all, 214 consecutive children with distal hypospadias were identified who had had a GRAP repair, of whom 205 were suitable for further study. The position of the urethral meatus in these children is summarized in Table 1. While some children were admitted before surgery for social reasons, most operations, i.e. in 183 patients (89%), were undertaken as day cases.. Problems immediately after surgery were rare; seven children (3.4%) were admitted overnight with medical problems. Of these boys, two had difficulty in voiding, one of whom required catheter drainage of the bladder. Two patients with uncontrolled pain required analgesia, two had significant nausea and vomiting, and one had a penile haematoma. Fifteen children (7.3%) stayed for one night after repair, with no clearly documented clinical indication.. A fistula occurred in 15 patients (7%); of these, one is known to have healed spontaneously, eight have been corrected surgically on a day-case basis and one fistula was not initially ...
CXorf66 also known as Chromosome X Open Reading Frame 66, is a 361aa protein in humans that is encoded by the CXorf66 gene. The protein encoded is predicted to be a type 1 transmembrane protein; however, its exact function is currently unknown. CXorf66 has one alias: RP11-35F15.2. There is a patent for CXorf66 under the file US 8586006 by the Institute for Systems Biology and Integrated Diagnostics, Inc. CXorf66 protein is a potential novel cancer biomarker. CXorf66 is located on Chromosome X at Xq27.1 and is on the complement strand. The CXorf66 gene is located between ATP11C ATPase, MIR505, and HNRNPA3P3. In addition to this, according to OMIM, CXorf66 is positioned between SOX3, SPANXB1, and CDR1. CXorf66 only consists of one known splice variant with three exons (1-117, 118-271, and 272-1288bp) and two introns. Locations of junctions occur at 30aa [G] and 81aa [M]. CXorf66 has only been found to have only one polyadenylation site. With 57 serines and 42 lysines, the CXorf66 protein is both ...

Several biological problems affecting the male testicles have been occurring with greater frequency over the past 50 years. The summary of the problem, which appeared in the 1993 journal, Environmental Health Perspectives(13), discussed the observed rise in testicular cancer and the medical conditions hypospadias and cryptorchidism, as well as the apparent declining sperm count among the overall male population. Hypospadias is when the testicles do not descend and cryptorchidism is when the opening to the penis appears on the underside of the penis.. According to the researchers at the Statistical Research Unit, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, cancer of the male testicles has increased over 3-fold from 1940 to 1980. The frequency of hypospadias (the opening of the penis on the underside) in England has doubled from 0.15% in 1964 to 0.36% in 1983. Similar increases were also reported from Sweden and Hungary. Recent British data also detected a near doubling of cryptorchidism. This problem has ...
In males the most common congenital malformation of the external genitalia is hypospadias, its also the second most common developmental disorder. It occurs due to the midline fusion of the male urethra, as a result the urethral meatus is misplaced. There are several sites where this abnormality may occur: granular, penile, penoscrotal, scrotal and perineal. (3). Its believed that genetic factors contribute to the presence of the disorder, however endocrine and environmental factors are also of significance. (1) Treatment The surgical methods currently used to treat distal hypospadias, include tabularized incised plate and meatal advancement and glansplasty intergrated repair. For proximal forms two staged procedures are employed. (2) ...

The birth defect, which affects about three in 1,000 newborn boys, is a condition where the urinary opening is abnormally positioned on the penis.. Hypospadias can be treated with surgery but it can affect the boys fertility once he reaches adulthood.. The study, led by pediatric surgeon Nicolas Kalfa and pediatric endocrinologist Charles Sultan, was carried out over five years and examined 600 children at hospitals in four French cities, 300 of whom were boys born with hypospadias.. "The study shows for the first time that regular professional or domestic exposure (to these chemicals), and more generally being in contact with them, seriously raises the risk of genital deformity," Sultan told AFP.. A summary of the research said boys were three times more likely to be born with hypospadias if they had been exposed to chemicals that interfered with their endocrine systems in the womb at the moment when the sex of the foetus is determined.. Both parents professions and where they live can play a ...
Aromatase deficiency (AD) is a very rare disorder resulting from mutations in the CYP19A1 gene encoding aromatase, a cytochrome P450 enzyme that plays a pivotal role in androgen conversion to estrogens. AD is inherited in an autosomal recessive trait, and to date only 35 cases have been described in the literature. Herein, we depict a new patient reared as a male, who presented at the age of 21 years with no palpable testis, hypoplastic scrotum, penis-like phallus (3 cm), and penoscrotal hypospadias. The patient was born to consanguineous parents, his karyotype was 46,XX, and SRY was negative ...

I once was explaining this to a class, and after seeing this textbook photo, a student asked "Couldnt that lead to homosexuality?" I initially thought she meant that, being XY, theyd want to have sex with women, and that would make them lesbians. It took a few minutes of rather confusing discussion before I realized that she meant that theyd probably have sex with guys, and being XY, that would make them gay. I think the class found it fairly disturbing that their terminology wasnt working in this instance.. Androgen insensitivity and hypospadias are examples of the range of conditions known as intersex. The term itself reflects the general discomfort of people toward any admission that gender is not an absolute dichotomy. And of course, that discomfort exists in part because a large majority of individuals do cluster close to the ends of the continuum, at least when it comes to genital morphology.. When you consider, as discussed in the recent New York Times essay on this issue, that ...

It is correct that Eden Foods does not use bpA in the lining of their cans of BEANS. However, when I inquired about a year ago, a company spokesperson replied that they DO still use bpA in the lining of their canned TOMATOES. I have been unable to find a single company that does not use bpA in the linings of their canned tomatoes. We now use tomato sauce from glass jars or fresh tomatoes in any recipe that calls for any type of tomato product. We also have switched to Kalamata olives that you can buy in glass jars. Also a DOLE spokesperson told me that they do not use bpA to line the cans of their pineapple. We made all of these switches about halfway through my third pregnancy when we learned about the dangers of bpA. Our third child, a boy, was born with the birth defect hypospadias which is caused by endocrine disruption around week 9-11 of pregnancy. If Id found out about bpA just a few months earlier, our son may not have had this problem….. Hypospadias has DOUBLED in the past decade or ...

Another month down and I am still in awe at home fast these little people learn....you quickly forget from baby 1 to baby 2. One big thing that happened since last month was he had surgery. We didnt post much about it because it involves what some would consider sensitive subject matter but as you know, we like to share our experience in hope of helping others going through the same thing. He had Hypospadias surgery which involved redirecting his urethra, which we discovered had a 90 degree curve and pointed downward instead of up. We traveled to St. Louis to have the surgery with specialist Dr. Palagiri at Mercy Childrens. The scariest part for me was the Caudal Block anesthesia, which is similar to an epidural. Well, we are a week and a half out from surgery and he is healing great! The first few days were rough and it involved dressing changes and soaks but by day 5, the dressing came off and he was practically back to his old self. We have to avoid any type of straddle toys until after our ...

These signs were consistent with the parents notion that the injury might have occurred when the wooden toilet seat fell and impaled onto the external genitalia while the child was passing urine directly into the toilet.. The child was able to continue to pass urine without obstruction or gross hematuria. The injuries resolved spontaneously without any specific treatment.. Discussion. Pediatric penile injuries may be accidental (Widni et al, 2011), iatrogenic and are often associated with circumcision (El-Bahnasawy and El-Sherbiny, 2002), or abusive (Hobbs and Osman, 2007) in nature. Unintentional injuries to the male external genitalia may occur from falls, during playful activities, sports, and motor vehicle or motorbike accidents (Widni et al, 2011). Male toddlers or preschool children tend to sustain genital injuries at home. The bathtub appears to be a dangerous spot when young children presenting with severe impalement injuries to the perineum are investigated (Sugar and Feldman, 2007). ...
