We studied the extra cranial portion of the internal carotid artery and structures associated with it, which are vulnerable to iatrogenic injury during surgical approach to the neck region in 18 individuals. Distances from the origin of the artery to hypoglossal nerve and posterior belly of digastric muscle were measured. The mastoid process and the hyoid bone were also used as landmarks in locating the nerve and respective distances measured. Hypoglossal nerve and posterior belly of digastric muscle crossed the ICA at variable positions with a mean distance of 10.1mm and 17.9mm respectively from the common carotid bifurcation. In a large scale screen for mutants that affect the early development of the zebrafish, 109 mutants were found that cause defects in the formation of the jaw and the more posterior pharyngeal arches. Here we present the phenotypic description and results of the complementation analysis of mutants belonging to two major classes: (1) mutants with defects in the mandibular and hyoid arches and (2) mutants with defects in cartilage differentiation and growth in all arches. Mutations in four of the genes identified during the screen show specific defects in the first two arches and leave the more posterior pharyngeal arches largely unaffected (schmerle, sucker, hoover and sturgeon). In these mutants ventral components of the mandibular and hyoid arches are reduced (Meckels cartilage and ceratohyal cartilage) whereas dorsal structures (palatoquadrate and hyosymplectic cartilages) are of normal size or enlarged. In this study, we measured tongue pressure using an original sensor sheet, and compared the swallowing behavior in VF images. We also attempted to define the function of tongue pressure within swallowing by recording muscle activity and assessing VF images. To our knowledge, this is the first report to investigate the temporal relationship among tongue pressure, activity of the supra‐hyoid muscle, and movement of the hyoid and bolus..
