The cyclophyllidean cestode Hymenolepis diminuta has been found to incorporate C1402 into organic acids, amino acids, and glycogen upon in vivo incubation. This incorporation was sensitive to incubation conditions, more C1402 being incorporated aerobically than anaerobically, and was also stimulated by starvation of the worms. The fact that no ^-ketoglutarate could be detected and that no C14 could be observed in glutamic acid upon incubation with C1402 indicated the absence of a complete citric acid cycle in this worm. There did appear to be an energy dependent connecting link between the glycolytic sequence and the dicarboxylic acid shuttle. An active phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, similar to the one present in avian liver, was found to be present in H. diminuta. This activity was stimulated by starvation and was abundant enough to account for the in vivo incubation results. A low level of malic enzyme activity was also found in acetone powder extracts of the worm. It was too low in ...
Beyond loss of the well-known secondary sexual characteristics, there are several responses to castration in the male mammal which indicate that the male sex hormone is at least indirectly a controlling factor in some of the bodys basic metabolic processes. In the case of the albino rat infected with Hymenolepis diminuta, these effects in turn cause changes in the normal activities of this tapeworm (Addis, 1946; Beck, 1950), indicating the widespread effect of testosterone as well as the intimacy of the host-parasite relationship. The purpose of the present investigation is to analyze further the responses of the tapeworm to castration of the host, by means of some morphological, histological, and enzymatic studies ...

The life cycle of H. diminuta involves rodents (rats primarily) as the definitive host and beetles (flour and grain beetles, Tribolium spp. and Tenebrio spp., respectively) as the intermediate host. The tapeworms eggs are passed in the rats feces, and beetles are infected when they eat the eggs; the metacestode stage in the beetle is called a cysticercoid. The rat is infected when it eats an infected beetle. Once the egg is digested by the intermediate host arthropod, the oncosphere, a fully developed larva contained in the egg, is released into the intermediate host. Its function is to migrate to the haemocoel (body cavity) of the insect where it will grow and differentiate into an encapsulated juvenile worm. This stage, the cysticercoid, is dormant and resides in the insect until both are eaten by a foraging rat. Within the definitive hosts stomach and intestine, the larval worm responds to chemical signals and excysts. It then invades the intestinal lumen, evaginates its scolex, attaches ...

We are interested in the molecular mechanisms that underly the evolution and diversification of parasitism in flatworms. We are currently working on the evolution of segmentation in tapeworms using the classical tapeworm model Hymenolepis microstoma, which we are developing for research in the genomic era through the characterisation of its genome and transcriptome, development of functional assays, and expression studies of Hox, Wnt pathway, and other developmental genes ...
Folks, When I refer to dwarf tapeworm, I have been using the new name, Vampirolepis nana, suggested by my fifth edition of Roberts. However, my current Zoo text (Hickman 2001) uses the old name Hymenolepis nana. I thought I could use some electronic resources and find what is currently considered the best name but after 20 minutes came to no resolution. The electronic data base our library uses, Ebsco host must not cover many parasitological journals since neither name came up in a search. Ingenta/Carl Uncover which covers more journals did not do much better. It produced no articles on a search for Vampirolepis and only two for Hymenolepis. Two journals is not much to base ones judgment of which names journals use, so I then went to the web. I used google to search for dwarf tapeworm and the two genera. I found that Vampirolepis is used on some current parasitology web or course sites but others still use Hymenolepis. In fact Hymenolepis is used a LOT more on the web. Am I right in assuming ...

Coral disease has emerged as a serious threat to coral reefs worldwide and a major cause of reef deterioration (Weil et al. 2006). The numbers of diseases and coral species affected, as well as the distribution of diseases have all increased dramatically within the last decade (Porter et al. 2001, Green and Bruckner 2000, Sutherland et al. 2004, Weil 2004). Coral disease epizootics have resulted in significant losses of coral cover and were implicated in the dramatic decline of acroporids in the Florida Keys (Aronson and Precht 2001, Porter et al. 2001, Patterson et al. 2002). In the Indo-Pacific, disease is also on the rise with disease outbreaks recently reported from the Great Barrier Reef (Willis et al. 2004), Marshall Islands (Jacobson 2006) and the northwestern Hawaiian Islands (Aeby 2006). Increased coral disease levels on the GBR were correlated with increased ocean temperatures (Willis et al. 2007) supporting the prediction that disease levels will be increasing with higher sea surface ...
Helium leak rate measurements were quantitatively correlated to the probability of microbial ingress for rubber-stoppered glass vials subjected to immersion challenge. Standard 10-mL tubing glass vials were modified by inserting micropipettes of various sizes (0.1 to 10 µm nominal diameter) into a side wall hole and securing them with epoxy. Butyl rubber closures and aluminum crimps were used to seal the vials. The test units were sealed in a helium-filled glove bag, then the absolute helium leak rates were determined. The test units were disassembled, filled with media, resealed, and autoclaved. The test units were thermally treated to eliminate airlocks within the micropipette lumen and establish a liquid path between microbial challenge media and the test units contents. Microbial challenge was performed by immersing the test units in a 35°C bath containing magnesium ion and 8 to 10 logs of viable P. diminuta and E. coli for 24 hours. The test units were then incubated at 35°C for an ...
The goodness of consuming Papaya Seeds are many and not limited to the above list. That being said, one should partake only small quantities of the seed and that also, not very frequently. Excessive consumption may lead to many side effects, notably pregnancy related issues.. As a precaution, pregnant women should not use papaya seeds or the enzyme-rich green papaya. This warning on their use would also extend to breastfeeding. Additionally, while papaya seeds do have strong anti-parasitic properties, they may be too powerful for young childrens gastrointestinal tracts, so a doctor should be consulted before giving them to infants.. In Colombia, a man showed up to a hospital with a confusing array of symptoms. He was gaunt, having lost a lot of weight in the past few months. He was HIV-positive and hadnt been taking his medication. He was fatigued, with a fever and a cough. Stool samples revealed that he was carrying the parasite Hymenolepis nana, a common type of tapeworm; strangely, a scan showed cancer-like nodes in his lungs and lymph nodes.. His doctors werent sure how to diagnose the man-the cells looked and behaved like cancer, but they werent the mans own cells. The cancer seemed to be from another multi-celled organism. The disease progressed and 72 hours after he was admitted to the hospital, the man died.. Doctors determined that the man died from his tapeworms cancer-the first such case ever reported, according to the study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine. And thats got some scientists asking questions about how much we know about what causes cancer in the first place.. Scientists ...

Tapeworm infection can also be caused by eating raw or undercooked meat from an animal that has the larvae of the tapeworm, grouped in cysts (coenuri) in its muscle tissue. Once ingested, the larvae then develop into adult tapeworms in the intestines. Adult tapeworms can measure up to 55 feet (17 m) long and can survive as long as 25 years. Some tapeworms attach themselves to the walls of the intestine, where they cause irritation or mild inflammation, while others may pass through to the stool and exit the body. Unlike other tapeworms, the dwarf tapeworm can complete its entire life cycle - egg to larva to adult tapeworm - in one host. This is the most common tapeworm infection in the world and can be transmitted between humans. Even while being treated for certain tapeworm infections, reinfection can result from ingesting tapeworm eggs shed by the adult worm into the stool, as a result of insufficient personal hygiene.. ...
Thirty six domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) were examined to observe the occurrence of ecto and endoparasites. Altogether seven species of ectoparasites namely Anaticola crassicornis, Lipeurus caponis, Goniocotes hologaster, Menopon gallinae, Menacanthus stramineus, Holomenopon leucpxanthum and Dermanyssus gallinae were observed and identified. L. caponis showed the highest prevalence both in male and female (100%). Mean intensity of A. crassicornis in female ducks was the highest (14.5 ± 2.36) followed by L. caponis (12.5 ± 3.21). The lowest mean intensity was of G. hologaster (2.5 ± 1.41) in male ducks. Prevalence of D. gallinae was higher in male (62.5%) than in female (40%). The maximum percentage of ectoparasites was recovered from wing feather (38.62) followed by trunk (23.85) and skin (23.44). Among the endoparasites, the occurrence of cestodes (77.78%) was the highest with the topmost intensity (51.43 ± 4.88). The highest prevalence was of Hymenolepis columbae and Hymenolepis ...

The eggs find their way inside the human body through food and water contaminated with these parasites. Food and water generally gets contaminated with feces of the host. For instance, a pig infected with the said worms passes it onto the soil through its feces. Food grown on that soil and not washed properly or eaten raw may result in the eggs being ingested. Eating pig meat infected with the parasite could also be a source. The eggs once ingested can grow into an adult tapeworm inside the host ...

A single 25 mg/kg body weight dose was effective against T. saginata, while twice this dose level (50 mg/kg), also as a single dose, was required for treating H. nana infection. Tolerance of the drug was good at both dose levels used.
If you eat pork, make sure its cooked well. When the source of the meat is not very sanitary, undercooked pork can conceal microscopic pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) eggs. Ingesting these can lead to a tapeworm infection or neurocysticercosis.. Larvae from the eggs can spread throughout the body, traveling to different parts like the brain, eyes, muscles, and skin, where they form cysts. ...
After a person has eaten infected fish, the larva begin to grow in the intestine. Larvae are fully grown in 3 to 6 weeks. The adult worm, which is segmented, attaches to the wall of the intestine. The tapeworm may reach a length of 30 feet (9 meters). Eggs are formed in each segment of the worm and are passed in the stool. Sometimes, parts of the worm may also be passed in the stool.. The tapeworm absorbs the nutrition from food that the infected person eats. This may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency and anemia ...
