Hymenaea courbaril (courbaril and West Indian locust) is a tree common in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. It is a hardwood that is used for furniture, flooring, and decoration. Its hard fruit pods have edible dry pulp surrounding the seeds. Its sap, called animé, is used for incense, perfume, and varnish. Hymenaea courbaril is commonly known as the courbaril, West Indian locust, Brazilian copal, and amami-gum. Although it is sometimes denominated Brazilian cherry and South American cherry,[citation needed] it is not a cherry tree but a legume of the Fabaceae family. It is also known as stinking toe, old mans toe, and stinktoe because of the unpleasant odor of the edible pulp of its seed pods. Its fruit, also known as locust, was a major food for indigenous peoples. Those who eat it do not consider the odor unpleasant. The pulp, in spite of its somewhat disagreeable odor, has a sweet taste; is consumed raw; may be dried and transformed into powder to be ...

Summary. This study is a part of a long-range investigation of the variation in resin composition in the tropical leguminous genus Hymenaea and the possible ecological role of these resins within tropical ecosystems. Although the stem, pod and leaf resins are being studied comparatively, emphasis has been placed on the leaf resin system because of the relative simplicity of the chemistry, opportunities for experimental studies on seedling plants under controlled environmental conditions and expected heavy selection pressures on seedlings in the field. The leaf resins from all species of Hymenaea contain 17-18 sesquiterpene hydrocarbons which vary quantitatively such that six compositional types have been recognized. Previous studies of leaf resin composition of 11 species of Hymenaea and 53 populations of the widespread H. courbaril have shown centers of diversity in composition to occur in Amazonia and in southern Brazil in contrast to very little diversity in central and northern South ...

We examined floristic patterns of ten seasonal semideciduous forest sites in southeastern Brazil and conducted a central sampling of one hectare for each site, where we took samples and identified all individual living trees with DBH (diameter at breast height, 1.30 m) ≥4.8 cm. Arboreal flora totaled 242 species, 163 genera, and 58 families. Fabaceae (38 species) and Myrtaceae (20 species) were families with the largest number of species. Only |i|Copaifera langsdorffii|/i| and |i|Hymenaea courbaril|/i| occurred at all sites. Multivariate analysis (detrended correspondence analysis and cluster analysis) using two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) indicated the formation of a group containing seven fragments in which |i|Siparuna guianensis|/i| was the indicator species. This analysis revealed that similarities between studied fragments were due mainly to the successional stage of the community.
Four different genera of diaporthalean coelomycetous fungi associated with leaf spots of tree hosts are morphologically treated and phylogenetically compared based on the DNA sequence data of the large subunit nuclear ribosomal DNA gene (LSU) and the internal transcribed spacers and 5.8S rRNA gene of the nrDNA operon. These include two new Australian genera, namely Auratiopycnidiella, proposed for a leaf spotting fungus occurring on Tristaniopsis laurina in New South Wales, and Disculoides, proposed for two species occurring on leaf spots of Eucalyptus leaves in Victoria. Two new species are described in Aurantiosacculus, a hitherto monotypic genus associated with leaf spots of Eucalyptus in Australia, namely A. acutatus on E. viminalis, and A. eucalyptorum on E. globulus, both occurring in Tasmania. Lastly, an epitype specimen is designated for Erythrogloeum hymenaeae, the type species of the genus Erythrogloeum, and causal agent of a prominent leaf spot disease on Hymenaea courbaril in South ...

About the copal, this is the biggest problem to get good substitute, because even we dont know what the original must be. The Zanzibar copal mentioned in Livache & McIntosh book, was taken out from Trachilobium Hornemannianum. I have looked at the internet and its in a same Hymenaea family. So it could not be very far from Manilla copal and there arent good alternative at the moment. I tried Mexican copal and other transparent resins from South America or Egypt and so on, but they dont dissolve in ethanol very well. Madagascar copal dissolves in Ethanol if it is left about 3 days in a warm room. The effect of fossilized resin and raw resin from live trees could make different quality varnish, especially the hardness.I always felt the surfaces of Best White Varnish of S&P (made with Manila or Kauri) are too soft to get good gloss even after a few weeks.. The biggest problem of Best White Varnishes, which I made with Manilla or Kauri, was, obvious clacks appeared within a few months and turned ...
Governments had abdicated their responsibility to curtail harm inflicted by the alcohol industry, and ready access to cheap liquor had fuelled a culture of student flat parties, she said.. Measures that research showed would make a difference - such as limiting physical and economic accessibility to alcohol - seemed to be given little credence in New Zealand.. An irony was the advice of epidemiologists such as Michael Baker and David Murdoch and public health specialist Nick Wilson were relied on when the threat of Covid-19 had to be met, she said.. When their equivalents talk about the dangers of alcohol, they are pooh-poohed and dismissed and seen as zealots.. Prof Hayne said leaders had marshalled the strength of the nation against Covid-19.. If only their response to alcohol was as swift and as sharp as their response to Covid. Imagine how different this country would be.. One of the big problems was easy access to cheap alcohol, including from supermarkets, Prof Hayne said, which she ...

Jatoba has a heartwood that varies from a light orangish brown to a darker reddish brown which tends to darken with exposure to light. The sapwood is a light grayish yellow color. The grain is interlocked and it has a medium to coarse texture. The wood gives off a good natural lustre. The end grain is diffuse-porous. Jatoba is rated as very durable in regards to decay. The wood is difficult to work with on account of its density and hardness. It has a moderated blunting effect on cutters. The wood stains, glues, turns, and finishes well. It also responds well to steam bending.. ...

Effects of Nutrition and Genotype on Prion Protein (PrPC) Gene Expression in the Fetal and Maternal Sheep Placenta. Placenta. 29(5):422-428. Interpretive Summary: Scrapie is a fatal disease of sheep, apparently spread by contamination of pastures and lambing barns by placentas containing the infectious agent. The factors controlling accumulation of the infectious agent in the placenta include the genetics of the fetus, although other contributing factors have not been examined. The infectious agent is associated with an abnormal form (PrP-Sc) of a normal protein (PrP-c). In experimental rodent models, increasing amounts of PrP-c result in increased susceptibility to scrapie. Because maternal nutrition is an important factor in placental development, this study investigated the effects of fetal genotype and maternal nutrition on the amount of ...
The project involves a multidisciplinary approach to analyze at behavioral and cellular level the impact of genetic, optogenetic, pharmacological or neuroxin lesioning manipulations in experimental rodent models of Parkinsons disease. Our work led us to propose novel therapeutic strategies targeting glutamate and cholinergic receptors.. One line of research focuses on the role of striatal cholinergic interneurons in the functional remodeling of the BG circuit in pathological conditions. Consideration is given to the involvement of this neuronal population in the development of cognitive and emotional deficits observed in the early stages of Parkinsons disease.. A second line of research focuses on the role of synaptic zinc in BG physiopathology. Synaptic zinc is coreleased exclusively with glutamate by cortical terminals. It acts as a neuromodulator and can thus alter the normal functioning of the BG under pathological conditions.. Members. Amalric Marianne, Liberge Martine, Mourre Christiane, ...

Available: http://abstracts.aspb.org/pb2008/public/P20/P20007.html. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Photosynthetic plasticity is well known to be a crucial aspect of plant survival in changing conditions. The molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of the light harvesting antenna complexes in response to a dynamic light environment and the turnover and repair of the PSII core complex due to unavoidable photodamage have been the subject of intense scrutiny. However, the integration of chlorophyll metabolism and transport into these processes remains poorly understood. Specifically, it is unclear whether chlorophyll is degraded concomitantly with the degradation of its binding protein. Evidence suggests that chlorophyll may instead by recycled and repackaged with different binding proteins. To ...
The aim of this work was the study of the correlation between the degree of photosynthetic plasticity/acclimation and the sucessional stage of tropical tree species. In order to assess this phenomena two different evaluation approaches were used: (i) the physiological and anatomical alterations in young plants of eight tree species cultivated under natural conditions of understory, and gap and (ii) the effects of the increment on the solar radiation, due to the simulated opening of gaps, on the physiological characteristics of the plants cultivated under understory conditions. The effect of different light regimes was also evaluated. On either case the parameters analyzed were the daily courses of the gaseous exchange and the chlorophyll fluorescence, the chloroplastidic pigments content and quantitative anatomical characteristics. The research was made in the Station of Research, Training and Environmental Education Mata do Paraiso (EPTEA Mata do Paraiso) and the studied species were: ...

Another thing to remember is that the ratio of calcium to phosphorus is important. Imbalance in the levels of calcium and phosphorus are closely linked to osteoporosis. So, make sure you consult a health care professional before you start phosphorus supplementation. To maintain proper balance, the ratio of calcium to phosphorus should be 2:1. Foods that are loaded with phosphorus but have relatively smaller quantities of calcium are soft drinks, red meat and poultry. When phosphorus levels are too high, calcium is lost in the urine. ...

Amber from the Dominican Republic is generally thought to be 15-20 million years old (i.e. Miocene in age), and is obtained from mines in the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range, where it is found as inclusions in turbiditic sandstones (marine landslip deposits). This secondary deposition makes it possible that the Amber is much older than the deposits in which it is found, possibly as old as 40 million years (Early Eocene). It was produced by a Leguminous tree, Hymenaea protera, which, based upon the ecology of the organisms found in the amber, is interpreted as having lived in moist tropical forests ...

Breast cancer risk has traditionally been linked to nulliparity or late first full-term pregnancy, whereas young age at first childbirth, multiparity, and breast-feeding are associated with a reduced risk. Early pregnancy confers protection by inducing breast differentiation, which imprints a specific and permanent genomic signature in experimental rodent models. For testing whether the same phenomenon was detectable in the atrophic breast of postmenopausal parous women, we designed a case-control study for the analysis of the gene expression profile of RNA extracted from epithelial cells microdissected from normal breast tissues obtained from 18 parous and 7 nulliparous women free of breast pathology (controls), and 41 parous and 8 nulliparous women with history of breast cancer (cases ...
In 2013, soon after taking office, then Treasurer Hockey announced a plan to make his senior public servants spend more time in the world of executives, bankers, bond traders and corporate investors or what he called the real world.. Perhaps Hockeys plan was for permanent redeployment. In his horror 2014 Budget, Hockey cut funding to ASIC by $120 million over five years, more than reversing an increase in funding provided by the previous Labor government. At the same time a minister called for more self-regulation of the financial services industry.. Hockey was sending a message to business that the Government wasnt just untroubled by the potential the capture of regulators by business, it positively encouraged it. And as for regulators, well, business could look after things themselves: the regulators were a bit light on cash to do their jobs.. The Government message met with a business response. Business was on board with Hockeys plan. Also in 2014, then Business Council President ...

Here, on a narrow pathway contoured into the edge of a fern-smothered hilltop, Englishman Paul Butler holds both arms away from his body, and in imitation of this Antillean island s national bird flaps his palms vigorously. As he does, an odd staccato noise comes from his throat, something combining a squawk, a croak, and a cry for help.. Butler is not trying to attract the colorful, blue-headed Jacquot, which a conservation program here has coaxed back from the edge of extinction. Instead, he is trying to show me is how this parrot which today has so far eluded us is behaving, hidden back there just behind the last towering rain forest tree, out of the range of normal, non-birder sensibilities. Caaawwwk, goes Butler, lifting his chin sharply with each call, flapping his hands like tiny, plucked wings.. Earnest, bespectacled, and exuberant, Butler may seem a bit like Mr. Rogers on speed, out for a walk in his neighborhood jungle. But he is, in fact, a man who is in the midst of one of the most ...

Recombination between homologous, but non-allelic, stretches of DNA such as gene families, segmental duplications and repeat elements is an important source of mutation. In humans, recent studies have identified short DNA motifs that both determine the location of 40 per cent of meiotic cross-over hotspots and are significantly enriched at the breakpoints of recurrent non-allelic homologous recombination (NAHR) syndromes. Unexpectedly, the most highly penetrant form of the motif occurs on the background of an inactive repeat element family (THE1 elements) and the motif also has strong recombinogenic activity on currently active element families including Alu and LINE2 elements. Analysis of genetic variation among members of these repeat families indicates an important role for NAHR in their evolution. Given the potential for double-strand breaks within repeat DNA to cause pathological rearrangement, the association between repeats and hotspots is surprising. Here we consider possible explanations for

Pore formation by four spontaneously occurring alpha-toxin fragments from Staphylococcus aureus were investigated on liposome and erythrocyte membranes. All the isolated fragments bound to the different types of membranes and formed transmembrane channels in egg-phosphatidyl glycerol vesicles. Fragments of amino acids (aa) 9-293 (32 kD) and aa 13-293 (31 kD) formed heptamers, similar to the intact toxin, while the aa 72-293 (26 kD) fragment formed heptamers, octamers, and nonamers, as judged by gel electrophoresis of the liposomes. All isolated fragments induced release of chloride ions from large unilamellar vesicles. Channel formation was promoted by acidic pH and negatively charged lipid head groups. Also, the fragments hemolytic activity was strongly decreased under neutral conditions but could be partially restored by acidification of the medium. We paid special attention to the 26-kD fragment, which, despite the loss of about one-fourth of the N-terminal part of alpha-toxin, did form ...
For some types of carcinogens, thresholds might even be envisioned to exist because of relevant pharmacokinetic factors . For example, some chenucals that must be activated metabolically to become carcinogenic may be handled through nonlinear metabolic processes, with the result that thresholds for their carcinogenic effects may exist .... Regulators have adopted the assumption of low dose linearity in cancer risk assessment, variously justified as scientifically correct and as responsible public health policy . Corollary assumptions are the one-molecule-one-hit hypotheseis, the exclusion of no-effect thresholds, and the equivalency of response in experimental rodents and man. While our understanding of the carcinogenesis process remains tentative, these generalizations are not sustained by the limited scientific evidence available, not even as interim working hypotheses. .. Its no secret that SMEs are struggling to access credit thanks to a perfect storm in lending markets.. We estimate an SME funding gap of over $70B. The Hayne Royal Commission, global regulations requiring banks to hold more capital and a slowing economy have all contributed to traditional lenders tightening the purse strings.. Whats less well known is the plethora of emerging alternative financing options for SMEs - and how to find the right one for your business.. Firstly, it helps to understand how credit markets work. Over 70 per cent of the debt capital supplied to SMEs comes from regulated banks. Banks measure the risk of a commercial loan by assessing the risk of default and the subsequent potential loss.. Default risk is the risk that a borrower does not service their debt in full and on time. This risk is closely linked to the debt capacity of SMEs and their ability to withstand industry shocks and defend their market share.. Banks and rating agencies typically use industry benchmarks ...
