We have examined various chemical techniques for the analysis of Sr and Nd isotope ratios in these fractions and present a robust method that can be used to separate both the Fe-Mn oxides and the detrital fraction from a marine sediment sample for isotopic analysis. Our sequential leaching procedure involves the use of 10% acetic acid, followed by 1 M hydroxylamine hydrochloride in 25% acetic acid to remove the carbonate component and the Fe-Mn oxide fraction, respectively. We summarize here a few of our brief observations. A damaged Chiroteuthis sp. B held for a short time in a shipboard aquarium would flash photophores brilliantly when grabbed by the fins. As many as 7-8 individual organs at a time would flash for about 1-5 seconds duration. The distal half of the tentacle was missing and flashes seemed to come from the remaining portion of the tentacle on some occasions and from the ventral arms on other occasions. A Chiroteuthis picteti (82 mm ML) held in a shipboard aquarium for about three hours produced luminescent displays that were quite different from that described above.The ocular photophores were observed to glow brightly and steadily for several minutes at a time (perhaps as long as 5 min.). Oximation with (O-carboxymethyl)hydroxylamine hemihydrochloride and methylation with diazomethane afforded the ester VI. Alkaline hydrolysis to the acid catalyzed rearrangement afforded the dione IX. Now I must tell you about some rather dramatic developments which have taken place in the last two weeks concerning the third nonsense triplet which we had uncovered by our genetic work on the rII region. You may recall that we had four barriers and one mutant (X655) which were neither ochre nor amber. We thought they were not UGA because they did not appear to revert to ochre. While we were assembling the data in the final stages of preparing our paper we noticed that this had not actually been checked for X655. When Leslie Barnett did the experiment we were astonished and delighted to find that it did indeed revert to ochre. We therefore went back and checked more carefully the reversion of the four barriers. We have now shown quite unmistakably that three of these revert to ochre with 2-aminopurine.
