Though seldom seen by visitors, periodic large-scale fires burn across Denali National Park and Preserve. The National Park Service manages ninety-three percent of the park as a Limited Management Option. This category recognizes areas where the cost of suppression may exceed the value of the resources to be protected and the exclusion of fire may be detrimental to the fire dependent ecosystem. The primary management strategies protect human life and specific resources and allow fire to contribute its natural role in the ecosystem.. The natural role of wildland fire at Denali varies considerably across the park and preserves geographical zones. Much of Denali consists of higher elevations, including many glaciers and exposed rock in the Alaska Mountain Range; areas which lack substantial fuels and are not necessarily prone to fire. Fuel means combustible material such as grass, leaves, plants, shrubs and trees that feed a fire. South of the range, the receptivity of fuels to fire lessens due to ...

Anchorage Forestry Sciences Lab. Over the years, the names of the wolf packs at the eastern end of Denali National Park have changed thereby adding some confusion for those interested in tracing the history of these wolves. Sixty years ago Adolph Murie referred to the two main packs as the Savage River Pack and the East Fork River Pack. Gordon Haber studied these same packs 30 years ago and referred to them as the Savage Pack and the Toklat Pack. He also referred to a Headquarters Pack located east of the Savage Packs territory.. In recent years, L.D. Mech and his colleagues observed these wolves during a period when some of the packs and their territories were not stable. They referred to the East Fork pack (using Muries original name) but observed this group to occupy part of the Savage Packs territory. They called the group that used the remainder of the original Savage territory the Headquarters Pack, and referred to a Savage Pack that ranged north of this area in the lower Savage River. ...

For the purpose of calculating runoff coefficients and groundwater recharge, there is a presumption that the preconstruction condition of a site or portion thereof is a wooded land use with good hydrologic condition. The term "runoff coefficient" applies to both the NRCS methodology at Subsection A(1)(a) and the Rational and Modified Rational Methods at Subsection A(1)(b). A runoff coefficient or a groundwater recharge land cover for an existing condition may be used on all or a portion of the site if the design engineer verifies that the hydrologic condition has existed on the site or portion of the site for at least five years without interruption prior to the time of application. If more than one land cover have existed on the site during the five years immediately prior to the time of application, the land cover with the lowest runoff potential shall be used for the computations. In addition, there is the presumption that the site is in good hydrologic condition (if the land use type is ...

Fluvial disturbances, especially floods and droughts, are the main drivers of the successional patterns of riparian vegetation. Those disturbances control the riparian landscape dynamics through the direct interaction between flow and vegetation. The main aim of this work is to investigate the specific paths by which fluvial disturbances, distributed by its components of groundwater hydrology and morphodynamic disturbance, drive riparian landscape patterns as characterized by the location (position in the river corridor) and shape (physical form of the patch) of vegetation patches in Mediterranean rivers. Specifically, this work assesses how the different components of fluvial disturbances affect these features in general and particularly in each succession phase of riparian vegetation. Groundwater hydrology and morphodynamic disturbance were defined by time and intensity weighted indexes calculated, respectively, from the mean annual water table elevations and the annual maximum instantaneous discharge

As ground water becomes increasingly important as a source of water in the United States, reliable information on the hydrological characteristics of carbonate aquifers must be obtained in order to develop them intelligently. Various tracers have been used in the past to determine if two or more points are connected hydrologically. Today there exists a number of excellent dye tracers and tracer methods have been developed in unconsolidated and clastic aquifers for determining hydrological characteristics. This paper reviews the various dye tracers and methods which might be applied in a carbonate karst terrain using wells as injection and sampling points. Fluorescein, Rhodamine, and Pontacyl Pink are evaluated. Effective porosities of the Gasconade, Roubidoux, and Jefferson City Formations were determined from field samples to estimate the amount of water which might be stored and transmitted through these rocks. In field investigations, salt, fluorescein, and Rhodamine were used as tracers during

Discard expectation, We are lightened." - Steve House, Denali Expedition - June 23, 1996. Story and photos by Jeremy Jones. The invite came at the end of an email regarding Protect Our Winters…. "By the way, do you want to come to Denali in June? I am going with my son Max, some of his friends and a few of mine. No camera crew…full vacation." - Conrad. Denali had never really been on my tick list. Assuming the peak was crowded, wind hammered and didnt get much fresh snow above 14k, I had never been very inspired to ride it. But this was an offer I couldnt refuse. To get an invitation from none other than Conrad Anker, one of the worlds most accomplished alpinists was a true honor.. But what put the invite over the top was the "no camera crew…vacation" part of the email. For the last few years I have been leading a large production crew on multiple intense trips to unknown places each winter. A "love of sport" adventure was just what I needed. And what better way to see North Americas ...

BACKGROUND Evidence shows that living in small scale homelike Special Care Units (SCU) has positive effects on behavioural and psychological symptoms of patients with dementia. Effects on cognitive functioning in relation to care facilities, however, are scarcely investigated. The purpose of this study is to gain more insight into the effects of living in small scale homelike Special Care Units, compared to regular SCUs, on the course of cognitive functioning in dementia. METHODS A group of 67 patients with dementia who moved from a regular SCU to a small scale homelike SCU and a group of 48 patients with dementia who stayed in a regular SCU participated in the study. Cognitive and behavioural functioning was assessed by means of a neuropsychological test battery and observation scales one month before (baseline), as well as 3 (post) and 6 months (follow-up) after relocation. RESULTS Comparing the post and follow-up measurement with the baseline measurement, no significant differences on separate

Example. The Colorado River Basin is extremely sensitive to climate change. A temperature increase of 2 degrees Celsius is estimated to reduce runoff by 4 to 12 percent. A 4 degree increase might reduce runoff by 10 to 20 percent. Increased temperature will decrease winter snowfall and accelerate spring snowmelt. As the Colorado River is used by people in seven states and two countries, even small decreases in runoff could have dramatic effects on human systems.. Based on a literature overview, this paper summarizes the impact and legacy of the contributions of Wilfried Brutsaert and Jean-Yves Parlange (Cornell University) with respect to the current state-of-the-art understanding in hydraulic groundwater theory. Forming the basis of many applications in catchment hydrology, ranging from drought flow analysis to surface water-groundwater interactions, hydraulic groundwater theory simplifies the description of water flow in unconfined riparian and perched aquifers through assumptions attributed to Dupuit and Forchheimer. Boussinesq (1877) derived a general equation to study flow dynamics of unconfined aquifers in uniformly sloping hillslopes, resulting in a remarkably accurate and applicable family of results, though often challenging to solve due to its nonlinear form. Under certain conditions, the Boussinesq equation can be solved analytically allowing compact representation of soil and geomorphological controls on unconfined aquifer storage and release ...
