According to the REACH "Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment", a leading DN(M)EL needs to be derived for every relevant human population and every relevant route, duration and frequency of exposure, if feasible. As the substance is a gas, oral and dermal routes of exposure are considered to be irrelevant, therefore no DNELs were derived for these routes. As the substance is not classified for acute toxicity, according to the REACH "Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment" (R.8.4.3.1), no acute / short-term exposure DNELs need to be derived. For long-term exposure, data from subchronic (13 weeks/90 days) and combined chronic toxicity/carcinogenicity (104 weeks) studies with rats and mice are available. In the 13 week studies, no target organs were consistently identified. In the combined chronic toxicity/carcinogenicity studies no adverse effects were observed at the highest concentration tested (10000 ppm (26000 mg/m3)). In this hazard ...

The simplified exchange approximation (SEA) method for calculation of infrared radiative transfer, used for general circulation model (GCM) climate simulations at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) and other institutions, has been updated to permit inclusion of the effects of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), halocarbons, and water-vapor-air molecular broadening (foreign broadening). The effects of CH4 and N2O are incorporated by interpolation of line-by-line (LBL) transmissivity calculations evaluated at standard species concentrations; halocarbon effects are calculated from transmissivities computed using recently measured frequency-dependent absorption coefficients. The effects of foreign broadening are included by adoption of the "CKD" formalisim for the water vapor continuum [Clough et al., 1989]. For a standard midlatitude summer profile, the change in the net infrared flux at the model tropopause due to the inclusion of present-day concentrations of CH4 and N2O is ...

Introduction. Victor Leung 7C (10) Experiment Date: 28TH September, 2006. EXP1 - Hydrolysing Organic Halogen Compounds Aim: The purpose of this experiment is to find out how the rate of the hydrolysis of an organic halogen compound depends on (1) the identity of the halogen atom (2) the nature of the CH skeleton. Principle: The hydrolysis of haloalkanes is an example of nucleophilic substitution in which the carbon halogen bond is replaced with a hydroxyl group. Water molecule is the nucleophile of the reaction while the halide ion departs as the leaving group. The reaction occurs faster with alcohol acting as a common solvent. The ease of leaving of halide ions increase in as the atom becomes bigger, and the bonding length longer. Method: The experiment made use of the product of hydrolysis - halide ions. The halide ions formed could be detected by AgNO3 which forms precipitation. The length of time required is inversely proportional to the rate of reaction. By observing the changes in the test ...

The draft Toxicological Review of hexachloroethane provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to hexachloroethane. Hexachloroethane (C2Cl6) is a colorless, nonflammable, crystalline solid primarily used in the military for pyrotechnic devices. Hexachloroethane has been used as a polymer additive, moth repellant, plasticizer for cellulose esters, insecticide solvent, and for refining aluminum alloys. Hexachloroethane is not commercially distributed in the United States. Exposure to hexachloroethane is primarily occupational, via inhalation and dermal exposure during hexachloroethane manufacturing and metal refining. Exposure may occur in military or civilian personnel working with pyrotechnic devices containing hexachloroethane and via ingestion of contaminated drinking water or fish. Hexachloroethane was identified in Superfund sites ...
The haloalkanes (also known as halogenoalkanes or alkyl halides) are a group of chemical compounds derived from alkanes containing one or more halogens. They are a subset of the general class of halocarbons, although the distinction is not often made. Haloalkanes are widely used commercially and, consequently, are known under many chemical and commercial names. They are used as flame retardants, fire extinguishants, refrigerants, propellants, solvents, and pharmaceuticals. Subsequent to the widespread use in commerce, many halocarbons have also been shown to be serious pollutants and toxins. For example, the chlorofluorocarbons have been shown to lead to ozone depletion. Methyl bromide is a controversial fumigant. Only haloalkanes which contain chlorine, bromine, and iodine are a threat to the ozone layer, but fluorinated volatile haloalkanes in theory may have activity as greenhouse gases. Methyl iodide, a naturally occurring substance, however, does not have ozone-depleting properties and the ...
In organic chemistry, hydrocarbons (compounds composed solely of carbon and hydrogen) are divided into two classes: aromatic compounds and aliphatic compounds (/ˌælɪˈfætɪk/; G. aleiphar, fat, oil), also known as non-aromatic hydrocarbons. Aliphatics can be cyclic; however, hydrocarbons with conjugated pi-systems that obey Hückels rule are instead considered to be aromatic.[1] Aliphatic compounds can be saturated, like hexane, or unsaturated, like hexene and hexyne. Open-chain compounds (whether straight or branched) contain no rings of any type, and are thus aliphatic. ...
Fluxes of halogenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over the Southern Ocean remain poorly understood, and few atmospheric measurements exist to constrain modeled emissions of these compounds. We present observations of CHBr3 , CH2 Br2 , CH3 I, CHClBr2 , CHBrCl2 , and CH3 Br during the O2 /N2 Ratio and CO2 Airborne Southern Ocean (ORCAS) study and the second Atmospheric Tomography mission (ATom-2) in January and February of 2016 and 2017. Good model-measurement correlations were obtained between these observations and simulations from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) atmospheric component with chemistry (CAM-Chem) for CHBr3 , CH2 Br2 , CH3 I, and CHClBr2 but all showed significant differences in model : measurement ratios. The model : measurement comparison for CH3 Br was satisfactory and for CHBrCl2 the low levels present precluded us from making a complete assessment. Thereafter, we demonstrate two novel approaches to estimate halogenated VOC fluxes; the first approach takes ...

Solvents are classified largely according to molecular structure or functional group. Classes of solvents include aliphatic hydrocarbons, many of which are halocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, esters/acetates, amides/amines, aldehydes, ketones, and complex mixtures that defy classification. The main determinants of a solvents inherent toxicity are (1) its number of carbon atoms; (2) whether it is saturated or has double or triple bonds between adjacent carbon atoms; (3) its configuration (i.e., straight chain, branched chain, or cyclic); (4) whether it is halogenated; and (5) the presence of functional groups. Subtle differences in chemical structure can translate into dramatic differences in solvent toxicity. ...

As a result, we see a clear-cut difference in the reaction products, which reflects nucleophilicity (bonding to an electrophilic carbon) versus basicity (bonding to a proton). Kinetic studies of these reactions show that they are both second order (first order in R-Br and first order in Nu:(-)), suggesting a bimolecular mechanism for each. The substitution reaction is clearly SN2. The corresponding designation for the elimination reaction is E2. An energy diagram for the single-step bimolecular E2 mechanism is shown on the right. We should be aware that the E2 transition state is less well defined than is that of SN2 reactions. More bonds are being broken and formed, with the possibility of a continuum of states in which the extent of C-H and C-X bond-breaking and C=C bond-making varies. For example, if the R-groups on the beta-carbon enhance the acidity of that hydrogen, then substantial breaking of C-H may occur before the other bonds begin to be affected. Similarly, groups that favor ...

Reaction of Organic Halogen Compounds with Metals (Part Ⅰ) A Formation of Organometallic Complex in Dimethyl Formamide Solvent Reaction of organic chlorine containing ester, alcohol, and acids with metallic tin and zinc in dimethyl formamide solvent gave a good yield of organo metallic complex. The same reaction under a mixed U.V. irradiation could not give an appreciable yield of the complex except in the case of an elevated reaction temperature. The solvation effect of dimethyl formamide of the metallic complex formation was markedetly increased as compared to the reaction in toluene and cyclohexane. In case of chlorine containing carboxylic acid, the formation of organo chloro zinc complex of the salt was observed. The reaction of organo zinc complex with a carbonyl precursor gave the addition product together with a dimerized product. Especially the aldehyde species enhanced the formation of zinc complex. The addition reaction was simple and convenient, but the yield was not high.(30-40% for
Abstract. We present the characterization and application of a new gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry instrument (GC-TOFMS) for the quantitative analysis of halocarbons in air samples. The setup comprises three fundamental enhancements compared to our earlier work (Hoker et al., 2015): (1) full automation, (2) a mass resolving power R = m/Δm of the TOFMS (Tofwerk AG, Switzerland) increased up to 4000 and (3) a fully accessible data format of the mass spectrometric data. Automation in combination with the accessible data allowed an in-depth characterization of the instrument. Mass accuracy was found to be approximately 5 ppm in mean after automatic recalibration of the mass axis in each measurement. A TOFMS configuration giving R = 3500 was chosen to provide an R-to-sensitivity ratio suitable for our purpose. Calculated detection limits are as low as a few femtograms by means of the accurate mass information. The precision for substance quantification was 0.15 % at the best for ...

Selectively deuterated and methylated analogs of the nematocide 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP) were compared to DBCP in causing acute renal damage in rats. All of the six deuterated analogs tested at 340 mumol/kg, including the perdeutero compound, failed to significantly alter the kidney necrosis observed at 48 hr compared to DBCP. Furthermore, when the perdeutero analog was administered at several doses (42.5, 85, 170, and 340 mumol/kg), it caused kidney damage that was not significantly different than that caused by an equivalent molar dose of nondeuterated DBCP. Of the five methylated analogs tested at 170 and 340 mumol/kg, only C3-methyl-DBCP and 1,2-dibromo-4-chlorobutane caused nephrotoxicity. The C2-methyl-, C1-dimethyl-, and C2-methyl-DBCP analogs failed to cause renal necrosis determined 48 hr after dosing. In distribution studies DBCP, perdeutero-DBCP, and all the methylated analogs were found to concentrate in the kidney approximately 25 times relative to plasma 1 hr after administration

Two hydrographic and δ18O transects across Fram Strait (Aug-Sept 1997, 1998) are used to examine freshwater contributions to the East Greenland Current (EGC). The EGC featured up to ∼16% meteoric water in both years, but was made comparatively more saline through the formation of up to ∼11 m of sea ice. We derive meteoric water fluxes of ∼3680 km³yr−1 in Aug‐Sept 1997, and ∼2000 km³yr−1 in Aug-Sept 1998. The 1997 and 1998 data show a long‐term mean sea ice flux through Fram Strait around half the long‐term mean meteoric water flux. A 1991 δ18O section [Bauch et al., 1995] yielded a very similar ratio. Our 1998 section reveals fresh, low‐δ18O water on the East Greenland shelf whose comparatively large volume constitutes a potentially significant contribution to the total freshwater flux through Fram Strait. Such fluxes are important to the regional and global thermohaline circulation; we suggest that efforts towards monitoring both the EGC and East Greenland shelf waters ...

The p-CD cavity is filled by 6.5 water molecules distributed statistically over eight sites (Fig. 1). The remaining 5.5 water molecules of the dodecahydrate are spread over eight sites between p-CD molecules. Because no water hydrogen atoms could be located, the assignment of hydrogen bonds must be based on distance criteria. One of the O...O distances, (OW5...OW8,2,32A)indicates that both sitescannot beoccupied simultaneously. All otherO...O contacts between oxygen atoms within the cavity (2.6A to 3.0A) satisfy the generally accepted distance criteria, The OW2.. .0(4)3distance of 2.98 A may possibly indicate the first observed hydrogen bond to glycosidic oxygen in saccharideocrystal structures. All other OW.. .0 ( 4 ) contacts exceed 3.3 A. The water molecules near O(2), O(3), and near the 0(6) rims are also in contact with hydroxyl groups of adjacent p-CD molecules, establishing a hydrophilic surface of the p-CD. water complex. The usual tetrahedral arrangement of hydrogen bonding donor and ...
Hydrocarbon extraction is a popular method of cannabis oil extraction, used to selectively extract compounds from the plant material. Most hydrocarbons are excellent extraction solvents, but they can be dangerous if they are not handled correctly. Most hydrocarbons are flammable, and can easily ignite. For this reason, there are industry-safety requirements that must be met. Valens holds multiple licenses for testing and processing cannabis and is fully certified to meet these specific requirements.

Hydrocarbons are the basic building blocks of organic compounds, but many organic compounds contain oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, or halogens. These can be thought of as taking a hydrogens place somewhere on the hydrocarbon skeleton. This provides the basis for
The specific rates of solvolysis of S-methyl chlorothioformate (MeSCOCl) are analyzed in 20 solvents of widely varying nucleophilicity and ionizing power at 25.0 °C using the extended Grunwald-Winstein Equation. A stepwise SN1 (DN + AN) mechanism is proposed in the more ionizing solvents including six aqueous fluoroalcohols. In these solvents, a large sensitivity value of 0.79 towards changes in solvent nucleophilicity (l) is indicative of profound rearside nucleophilic solvation of the developing carbocation. There are two features of Scheme 2 that merit further comment.. First, notice that the reaction is depicted as an equilibrium process. In most nucleophilic aliphatic substitution reactions, the value of the equilibrium constant is very large, i.e. the reaction is essentially irreversible. The rules that we developed for assessing the equilibrium constant of any acid-base reaction will serve as a useful guide in estimating the equilibrium constant for nucleophilic aliphatic substitution reactions as well.. Second, since the reaction is an equilibrium process, there is no fundamental difference between a nucleophile and a leaving group. It all depends on your perspective; the reagent that acts as a nucleophile in the forward direction assumes the role of a leaving group in the reverse direction. ...

5.1 Exposure data Exposure to ethylene dibromide (1,2-dibromoethane) may occur in pest control, petroleum refining and waterproofing. Dermal exposure is possible when handling leaded gasoline containing ethylene dibromide. It has been detected at low levels in air and water.. 5.2 Human carcinogenicity data. Three cohort studies have included workers exposed to ethylene dibromide, but because of their low statistical power and/or lack of information about individual exposures, little can be concluded about the carcinogenicity of this compound in humans.. 5.3 Animal carcinogenicity data. Ethylene dibromide has been tested for carcinogenicity by oral administration in mice, rats and fish, by inhalation in mice and rats and by skin application in mice. Following its oral administration, it produced squamous-cell carcinomas of the forestomach in rodents of both species, an increased incidence of alveolar/bronchiolar lung tumours in mice of each sex, haemangiosarcomas in male rats, oesophageal ...

In chemistry a substitution reaction happens when an atom or a group of atoms is replaced by a different one. Substitution reactions can be of many different types. In organic chemistry, the main ones are nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic substitution. These take their names from electrophiles and nucleophiles. However, substitution reactions can also happen under other conditions. For example, photochemical reactions (reactions that use light instead of heat) are used to put halogens in a molecule. Another example is using free radicals. Choosing the correct solvent and temperature conditions is very important to make sure that the reaction happens. Sometimes an elimination reaction can happen instead. The product of a substitution reaction is often called a substituted molecule. For example, phenol can be called a substituted benzene. ...

Why do plants make so many small-molecule metabolites? Today, the standard answer is that specialized metabolites are produced "to protect from enemies and attract friends," and there are many elegant examples in the literature (e.g., Peters et al., 1986; Schemske and Bradshaw, 1999; Wittstock et al., 2003; Dudareva and Pichersky, 2006; Weinhold and Baldwin, 2011). However, the view of plants as master biochemists is relatively new in the history of plant biology, ecology, and evolutionary biology. The broad range of taxonomically and cell type-limited molecules that we now know as specialized metabolites were long known as "secondary metabolites," reflecting a belief that they are evolutionary oddities or waste products.. Due to the reduction in the stratospheric ozone layer caused by widespread use of halocarbon refrigerants and other industrial chemicals, in the 1980s concern arose about the possibility of widespread increases in terrestrial UV-B (∼280-320 nm). UV-B was known to damage DNA, ...

For the polyhalogenated ethanes and propanes in addition to the nucleophilic substitution reactions, degradation of these compounds can occur through the base-mediated loss of HX. Depending on structure type, elimination or dehydrohalogenation may be the dominant reaction pathway at environmentally relevant pHs. This process often results in the formation of halogenated alkenes, which can be more persistent and of more concern than substitution products. For a number of the polyhalogenated aliphatics, both neutral and base-mediated hydrolysis will occur at ambient environmental pH and that the relative contributions of these processes will be dependent on the degree and pattern of halogen substitution. The rates of dehydrohalogenation reactions will be dependent on the strength of the C-X bond being broken in the elimination process. Accordingly, it is expected that the ease of elimination of X will follow the series Br > Cl > F ...

Tn archival work, aerosols are used for dispersing deacidification solutions; in this case the propellant, which must be inert and nonflammable, is frequently a chlorofluorocarbon, e.g., freon 12, dichlorodifluoromethane (CCl 2 F 2 ). ...
This mechanistic model explains many aspects of the reaction. First, it accounts for the fact that different nucleophilic reagents react at very different rates, even with the same alkyl halide. Since the transition state has a partial bond from the alpha-carbon to the nucleophile, variations in these bond strengths will clearly affect the activation energy, ΔE , of the reaction and therefore its rate. Second, the rear-side approach of the nucleophile to the alpha-carbon will be subject to hindrance by neighboring alkyl substituents, both on the alpha and the beta-carbons. The following models clearly show this "steric hindrance" effect.. The two models displayed below start as methyl bromide, on the left, and ethyl bromide, on the right. These may be replaced by isopropyl, tert-butyl, neopentyl, and benzyl bromide models by pressing the appropriate buttons. (note that when first activated, this display may require clicking twice on the selected button.) In each picture the nucleophile is ...
Paola Bezzi appointed MER-1: understanding astrocytes by cellular imaging. The importance of astrocytes in cerebral function has been a focus of the DBCM for several years, and the recent appointment of Paola Bezzi as maître denseignement et de recherche-1 (MER-1) in the DBCM will strengthen this line of research. Paola Bezzi and her group have been present in the DBCM since 2004, but their stabilization will enable them to expand their research with a more long-term view, as they seek to unravel the secrets of astrocytic transmitter release and how it changes in cellular pathologies.. Transmitter exocytosis from synapses is the basis of rapid communication between neurons. By contrast, nonneuronal brain cells have generally been considered unable to perform this type of exocytosis. In collaboration with Professors Andrea Volterra, Director of the DBCM, and Vidar Gundersen (University of Oslo) since 2004, Paola Bezzi has made use of electron microscopy and new cellular imaging techniques ...

Cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbons have a closed ring of carbon atoms in a polygon configuration having the same number of vertices as the number of carbon atoms. If the hydrocarbons have a ring containing a single double bond between two of the carbons, the hydrocarbons are referred to as cycloalkenes or cycloolefins. The adjacent image depicts two such cycloalkenes with single double bonds, namely cyclopentene (C5H8) and cyclohexene (C6H10 ...

The new nanoreactor consecutively performs two of the Fischer-Tropsch processs steps, which used to require two separate reactors. The reactor carries out the first conversion step, where many different hydrocarbons, including the components of gasoline, are produced from syngas. However, this initial step also generates undesirable hydrocarbons, which comprise longer chains of carbon atoms than the gasoline components. These long-chained hydrocarbons are found in heavy heating oil, for instance. In order to increase the concentration of superior, short-chained hydrocarbons in the end product, a second step called "cracking" is necessary. This involves breaking the long-chained molecules of the undesirable hydrocarbons into short-chained ones. This key step is also feasible in the new nanoreactor.. For the construction of the nanoreactor, the scientists used nanocrystals of a zeolite that they had cultivated themselves in the lab. Zeolites are materials with a crystal structure that contain ...

As part of past status reports, the PBSG has traditionally estimated a range for the total number of polar bears in the circumpolar Arctic. Since 2005, this range has been 20-25,000. It is important to realize that this range never has been an estimate of total abundance in a scientific sense, but simply a qualified guess given to satisfy public demand. It is also important to note that even though we have scientifically valid estimates for a majority of the subpopulations, some are dated. Furthermore, there are no abundance estimates for the Arctic Basin, East Greenland, and the Russian subpopulations. Consequently, there is either no, or only rudimentary, knowledge to support guesses about the possible abundance of polar bears in approximately half the areas they occupy. Thus, the range given for total global population should be viewed with great caution as it cannot be used to assess population trend over the long term ...
