Having read the book I agree that it is not light escapism and requires some deeper unpacking than other books. This said that is the nature of philosophy writing and it is more accessible than most philosophy I have read. Grays comments on the views of famous philosophers are controversial to say the least and some of his contentions are not closely argued, but against this his more general expositions are original and very thought provoking. One of Grays basic themes is that humanism (progress of humankind by humankind) is false. Scientific progress does not equate to political and ethical progress. He also outlines a view that life (or more accurately being) is the present and is for experiencing; it does not in itself have a purpose. We are bound to have an emotional reaction to his arguements however for me philosophy is about exposing truth and truth does not have emotional content. These are the top-down hierarchical control structures of society such as schooling, media and its censorship, mass propaganda, etc. We feel the institutional pressures weighing down on us and whats more we are becoming more aware that some of these control structures were put in place to accommodate the agenda of the few at the expense of the many. The self-defeating world view that accompanies this is a fatalist one. We have given up our control and freedom completely, feeling that this is the way things are and that there is nothing much we can do about it. This is how the world works.... In my late teens and early twenties I struggled with all the things you wrote about in your post. The desire to control doesnt go away as you age. I think this is in part due to what it means to be human-we want to control, because it gives us a sense of security. The desire to control is also a function of our cultural world view. Most of western society lives under the scientific or newtonian paradigm. This paradigm or world views assumes that the world is like a machine. It is made up of parts and if you create the right conditions all those parts will work in unison to produce an expected result. Create the right conditions and you can control the outcome. Sometimes, particularly with hoarders, including some breeders, offending happens only because they have too many animals. They are actually very good at caring for one or two animals, but unsurprisingly, cannot cope with too many. In these cases, it can be helpful for the court to place these people on probation, where they receive support, supervision and counselling or treatment as needed, in conjunction with a prohibition order than ensures they limit their animals. The probation also has the effect of giving the offender some extra incentive to comply with the prohibition order, because a contravention of a prohibition order will also be a breach of their probation, and could lead to further prosecution, penalty and re-sentencing. So the simultaneous operation of these two orders is effective in re-educating people about how to care for pets, particularly people who have hoarding tendencies, including those obsessed with breeding too many animals ...
