This book focuses exclusively on ergonomics in the design and use of hand tools. Hand tools have been an integral supplement to the human hand since the beginning of civilization. Recently, they have been pinpointed as a prominent cause of workplace disease. Cumulative Trauma Disorders such as Tendonitus, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and Raynauds Syndrome are caused by the specialization of motion employed when using a screw driver, the shock to the hand and wrist when a hammer strikes a nail, or the vibration of a power saw. Ergonomics and Safety in Hand Tool Design explores the relationship between Biomechanics, Safety, and Ergonomics allowing the reader to recognize, evaluate, and control ergonomic risk factors and improve hand tool design. After a history of hand tool use and design, the book is broken down by the various disciplines as they apply to hand tools, taking a broad approach. The author gives special attention to safe design and use, illustrated with detailed diagrams. The text serves as a
Objectives: To examine the efficacy of a participatory ergonomics intervention in preventing musculoskeletal disorders among kitchen workers. Participatory ergonomics is commonly recommended to reduce musculoskeletal disorders, but evidence for its effectiveness is sparse. Methods: A cluster randomised controlled trial among the 504 workers of 119 kitchens in Finland was conducted during 2002-2005. Kitchens were randomised to an intervention (n = 59) and control )n = 60) group. The duration of the intervention that guided the workers to identify strenuous work tasks and to seek solutions for decreasing physical and mental workload, was 11 to 14 months. In total, 402 ergonomic changes were implemented. The main outcome measures were the occurrence of and trouble caused by musculoskeletal pain in seven anatomical sites, local fatigue after work, and sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders. Individual level data were collected by a questionnaire at baseline and every 3 months during the ...

BACKGROUND: the objective of this research was to determine the association between LBP that limited or interrupted fishing work and ergonomic low back stress measured by (1) self-reported task and (2) two ergonomic assessment methods of low back stress. METHODS: Eligible participants were from a cohort of North Carolina commercial fishermen followed for LBP in regular clinic visits from 1999 to 2
Results Awkward back posture (prevalence ratio (PR) 1.12, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.17), hand force (PR 1.06, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.10), physical effort (PR 1.10, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.16) and whole body vibration (PR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.08) were each associated cross-sectionally with LBP. Awkward back posture (RR 1.13, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.31) and hand force (RR 1.07, 95% CI 0.93 to 1.22) also predicted incident LBP, although estimates were statistically less precise. Neither job control, psychological demands, nor job strain was independently related to risk of incident LBP. Among participants reporting high physical ergonomic exposures and moderate to high job control, increasing job demands was associated with a reduced LBP risk (RR 0.72, 95% CI 0.52 to 1.00). Among participants reporting high physical exposures and low job control, psychological demands was associated with an increased LBP risk (RR 1.30, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.66). ...

A preferred embodiment comprises a power hand tool of the type which has a generally cylindrical elongated plastic housing with a motor contained within the housing and having an output shaft that extends from the front end portion of the hand tool, and which has a metal front end portion that cooperates with the plastic housing to strengthen a shaft locking mechanism located at the front end of the hand tool. The metal front end portion not only strengthens the outer surface of the housing in the front end portion of the tool, but also has a pair of internal structural ribs positioned to absorb stress that may be present in the housing as a result of force applied to the shaft locking mechanism. The preferred embodiment is also designed to enable the shaft locking pin mechanism to be easily assembled and retained without the need for an E-clip or C-clip as is commonly the practice in commercially available spiral saw hand tools.

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as Input or Output based. Input based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different currencies such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning. Output based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning. The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently. As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SMI Group ...

Ergonomics design is about the creation of future work. So how can ergonomics research support and inform design if its findings are cast in a language oriented towards current work derived from field observations or laboratory settings? In this paper we assess instances of three different strands (experimental, ethnomethodological, and surveys) of ergonomics research on paper flight strips in air traffic control, for how they analytically confront future work and how they make the findings relevant or credible with respect to future work. How these justifications come about, or how valid (or well argued for) they are, is rarely considered in the ergonomics literature. All three strands appear to rely on rhetoric and argument as well as method and analysis, to justify findings in terms of their future applicability. Closing the gap between research results and future work is an important aim of the ergonomic enterprise. Better understanding of the processes necessary to bridge this gap may be ...

How often have you heard of equipment or gadgets that claim to eliminate injuries, relieve sore backs, or soothe aching wrists? Maybe you buy them, set them up, and have employees use them for a while. Then, sometime later, you find that people do not use the equipment. Then you realize, Oh, I remember that. It didnt work at all.. The unfortunate truth is that products and equipment like these pervade the ergonomics industry. But this is not true ergonomics. Blindly applying a generic solution, when the root cause of the issue is not fully understood, will rarely result in positive outcomes. It may even make the situation worse.. When looking to invest in ergonomics solutions, do not confuse what author and Certified Professional Ergonomist Ian Chong calls voodoo ergonomics for the real thing. Also, be sure your ergonomist does not rely on such practices. Real solutions are only attained through professionals who can leverage scientific findings and years of real-world experience to assess ...

The Hazards: If you use hand tools over and over every day, you can injure your hand, wrist, or arm. You can be injured if you must hold on tight for a long time or keep twisting the handle, for instance. You can get carpal tunnel syndrome, trigg
In common with many industries, manufacturing faces the challenge of effective management of a diverse workforce. Humans differ greatly but traditional manufacturing work practices do not take into account human variability issues during the work design process. Variations in individual and organizational work performance due to many individual factors such as age, gender, level of skill, experience and background bring performance inconsistencies. This research investigates the effects of individual skill on work performance in general, and workplace safety and human well-being in particular. A research framework is proposed for highlighting major differences in work performing strategies, their potential impact on work performance and how these findings can be used for designing more inclusive work practices. A case study has been presented where ergonomics risk assessment methods have been used to validate the usefulness of this framework. It is also concluded that skill has a strong ...

1971, Nutzwertanalyse in der Systemtechnik, Wittmannsche Buchhandlung, MUnchen. TASK ANALYSIS IN SYSTEM ERGONOMICS Heiner Bubb Institut fur Ergonomie der Technischen Universitat Mlinchen/FRG In the preceding paper it has been more generally shown, how system ergonomics is especially concerned with the development of ergonomic analysis and design methods and their application to the solution of man-machine-system problems which arise during system design. The steps have been pointed out, through which a system ergonomic application has to run (development phase, realisation phase and finally operation phase) and it has been demonstrated that various disciplines have to contribute to system ergonomics. Starting with this data, interface components such as displays and controls are selected or designed~ dimensions of consoles are determined after consideration of numbers and sizes of displays, controls, and other console components and anthropometric data of the personnel projected~ displays and ...

The use of hand tools in industry is one of the many risky issues for musculoskeletal disorders. Working postures during handling tools assumed may be reiterated several times a day, every day for several years and can be predicted to affect the musculature of the workers. Using physiological demands to assess coordinated posture and anthropometry in manual handling tools has not received much attention in literature. Therefore, the aim of this research is to study the effects of combined postures of trunk and shoulder besides the individuals anthropometry on heart rate in vertical drilling task. Ten male students participated in this experiment and ANOVA (Analysis of variance) was used to analyse the data. The results showed that shoulder flexion and trunk inclining forward have a significant effect on heart rate (P , 0.01). Also, the anthropometric in terms of individuals weight and max grip strength has a negative correlation with heart rate (R2 = 0.46 and 0.13 respectively).. ...
