N2 - To assess the prevalence of HTLV-I and HTLV-II infections in different groups at risk for HIV-I infection, a study on 867 subjects was carried out by means of serological and PCR analyses. Serum specimens were collected from 268 intravenous drug users (IVDU), 66 homosexual men, 248 subjects with sexually transmitted diseases (STD), 105 thalassemics and 180 hemophiliacs. Sera from 3 IVDU and a sample from an STD patient were confirmed as HTLV-II seropositive; a thalassemic patient was seropositive for HTLV-I; a homosexual man, though confirmed as HTLV-I/II-seroreactive, could not be typed by serological methods. New genetic data on 40 red cell enzymes, antigenic blood groups, and serum proteins representing 42 separate loci, are reported for two Guaymi communities in Southeastern Costa Rica. These two settlements, Limoncito and Abrojo, are of recent origin, having been established by Panamanian migrants in the last 50 years. Detailed data on the provenance of these migrants permits an analysis of how these settlement patterns differ from those typical of less acculturated Amerindians from the lowlands of South America. The genetic compositions of these two communities are compared with those of previous Panamanian Guaymi samples, and several points are established: (1) One of the localities, Limoncito, contains families from both Guaymi dialect groups (eastern and western), and the allelic frequencies are intermediate between those of the dialect groups. (2) The other settlement, Abrojo, is quite similar to the western Guaymi, as expected from historical reconstruction of its antecedents. (3) In ...

The past 2 weeks were very tiring. Andee was admitted in the hospital for bronchopneumonia. Other than that, she has to undergo an operation to remove an abnormal mole growth inside her left eye. We initially discovered her mole when we were kidding around years ago. Old folks say that if someone can see ghosts, elements, etc. (which Andee does, that time), most likely there is a mole in her eye. True enough, there was one in her left eye about the size of half a grain of rice. Almost two or three weeks ago, it was discovered that this little mole is now almost the size of her iris, and it has shown to have, upon consultation, small blisters, or cystic somethings. Her doctor would need to remove it, because, like any other mole that changes in charateristic, it has to be examined ...
Two stars are like two thumbs up, Im pretty sure. Hey, check it out - Wanderers has earned its second star from the Major Book Review Sites. This time, from Kirkus! Note that the review is just a teeny wee bit spoilery. Or you can just scan this mighty nice takeaway: Anyone whos touched on Wendigs oeuvre, let alone his lively social media presence, knows hes a full-voiced political creature whos less concerned with left and right than the chasm between right and wrong, and that impulse is fully on display here. Wendig has stretched his considerable talents beyond the hyperkinetic horror that is his wheelhouse to deliver a story about survival thats not just about you and me, but all of us, together. Wendig is clearly wrestling with some of the demons of our time, resulting in a story that is ambitious, bold, and worthy of attention. You can pre-order Wanderers in print, e-book (Kindle, Nook, Apple Books, Kobo), and audio. And if you do pre-order? You get some swaggy swag. […]. ...
POSADA-VERGARA, Maria Paulina et al. Clinical and epidemiological aspects of HTLV-II infection in São Paulo, Brazil: presence of Tropical Spastic Paraparesis/HTLV-Associated Myelopathy (TSP/HAM) simile diagnosis in HIV-1-co-infected subjects. Rev. Inst. Med. trop. S. Paulo [online]. 2006, vol.48, n.4, pp.207-210. ISSN 1678-9946. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0036-46652006000400006.. In this study, the epidemiological and clinical features observed in solely HTLV-II-infected individuals were compared to those in patients co-infected with HIV-1. A total of 380 subjects attended at the HTLV Out-Patient Clinic in the Institute of Infectious Diseases Emilio Ribas (IIER), São Paulo, Brazil, were evaluated every 3-6 months for the last seven years by infectious disease specialists and neurologists. Using a testing algorithm that employs the enzyme immuno assay, Western Blot and polymerase chain reaction, it was found that 201 (53%) were HTLV-I positive and 50 (13%) were infected with HTLV-II. ...
