AU - Stricklin, W. R.. PY - 1999/1/1. Y1 - 1999/1/1. N2 - The objectives of this study were to determine effects of housing design (calves tethered in open stalls vs untethered in individual pens) and widths of 56, 66, and 76 cm (2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments) on indicators of stress and behavior in special-fed veal calves. Three production cycles (groups) were used, each with 36 Holstein bull calves. Calves (n = 108) were randomly allotted to treatments upon arrival at the facility. Blood samples were collected four times (wk 4, 9, 13, and 18) during the 18-wk production cycle. Blood serum values for cortisol and α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) exhibited few treatment differences. Blood leukocyte differential counts at 4 and 18 wk (segmented neutrophils [N], banded neutrophils, lymphocytes [L], ...

A Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence survey was conducted in poultry flocks kept under different housing systems in Israel. The seroprevalence rates were 35.4 % (46/130) in battery-raised chicken egg-layers from Jerusalem which were first raised on the ground, 12.5 % (19/152) in free-range chickens from various locations of the country and 9 % (4/45) in turkeys from the north. However, all broilers (50) and chicken breeding stock (58) kept under high biosecurity conditions in Jerusalem were found to be T. gondii seronegative. It is concluded that high biosecurity conditions prevent contamination with oocysts by rendering premises inaccessible to cats ...
Individual housing during the neonatal period facilitates sanitation, disease control and individual attention for observation and treatment. Individual housing must allow the calf to turn around comfortably and to assume normal postures.. Calves should be housed in groups by 10 weeks of age to facilitate normal behaviors, including social interaction. Like individual housing, group housing must allow all calves to turn around comfortably and to assume normal postures.. Calves must be fed diets that provide adequate energy, protein and minerals to maintain good health and positive growth. Diets must be balanced to prevent nutritional deficiencies and their consequences, including but not limited to iron deficiency with subsequent anemia. Water must be provided from birth. Dry feed must be provided for rumen development and to allow the normal process of rumination. All calves must be fed colostrum after birth.. Housing must be ventilated to provide fresh air and to prevent buildup of ammonia or ...

The consequences of Confined Animal Feeding Operations. A report released last week by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), titled CAFOs Uncovered: The Untold Costs of Confined Animal Feeding Operations, exposed the negative effects that Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) have on humans, animals and the environment. Margaret Mellon, director of UCSs Food and Environment Program said, "If CAFOs were forced to pay for the ripple effects of harm they have caused, they wouldnt be dominating the U.S. meat industry like they are today.". Your question and comments are ...

Intensive pig farming is a subset of pig farming and of Industrial animal agriculture, all of which are types of animal husbandry, in which livestock domestic pigs are raised up to slaughter weight. These operations are known as AFO or CAFO in the U.S. In this system of pig production, grower pigs are housed indoors in group-housing or straw-lined sheds, whilst pregnant sows are housed in gestation crates or pens and give birth in farrowing crates. The use of gestation crates for pregnant sows has resulted in lower birth production costs; however, this practice has led to more significant animal cruelty. Many of the worlds largest producers of pigs (US, Canada, China, Mexico) use gestation crates but some nations and nine US states have banned and removed these crates. The European Union has banned the use of gestation crates after the 4th week of pregnancy. Intensive piggeries are generally large warehouse-like buildings or barns. Indoor pig systems allow the pigs conditions to be monitored, ...
famul: to go outside, ruin everyones day and cry out loud "state, take care of me in every aspect of my life" is having balls? thats quite a desastrous way of thinking.. and if you (=the Britons) dont like high prices, terrible transport and ruined economy, why the hey do you still vote for those leftist social engineers? do you think theyll eventually learn how to not screw everything up? and to the standard of this housing project: can you imagine, how deadly expensive that must be? where do they take that money? not from the taxes they sucked off the market, so that the economy is worse off, more people is unemployed and needs social housing, hey?. ...

Are nutrient requirements different when sows are group housed vs. individually housed? Certainly requirements differ when sows are housed outside in groups, as environmental conditions must be factored in when determining nutrient needs, but ambient and effective temperature become less of an issue when sows are housed indoors, regardless of housing system. In extremely hot weather, sows in group pens with minimal space will become heat stressed earlier, while sows in individual stalls are more susceptible to very cold weather. In general, pigs will adjust their feed intake to account for changes in energy needs. However, in limit fed situations, this means the operator must account for these temperature extremes by adjusting feed intake and/or caloric density of the diet. Do nutrient requirements differ between housing systems when environmental conditions are similar? Very little is known. One would expect a slight increase in nutrient needs to account for additional activity in group housing ...
CANADA - A Nutritionist with Gestal says, when planning group sizes in group sow housing systems, producers should consider anticipated breeding schedules, Bruce Cochrane reports.
Several years have passed and the councils have changed their policies. They reduced their potential offers from three to two and now the current position is that most councils will only offer one property, regardless of whether it is suitable or not. If you do not accept the offer the council may discharge their duty towards you and leave you with no accommodation at all. Their reasons are that the social housing stock is really low and they believe the accommodation provided is suitable considering the current #HousingCrisis. They also use this reason to offer accommodation outside of their own Borough. Therefore, it is not uncommon for families to be offered accommodation in places such as Birmingham and Braford. It is also important to note that the properties offered are mostly private properties, not social housing. So you may be accommodated in Birmingham or Bradford but it still may not be in social housing.. Some argue that councils are sending families out of the borough because it is ...
Performance of finishing pigs in hoop structures or confinement during winter and summer was evaluated in Iowa. Hoops are large, tent-like shelters with cornstalks or straw for bedding. During summer and winter seasons for 3 yr (1998 to 2001), six trials were conducted using three hoop barns (designed for 150 pigs per pen, one pen per hoop) or a mechanically ventilated confinement barn with slatted floors (designed for 22 pigs per pen, six pens in the barn). A total of 3,518 pigs started the trials. Summer trials were June through October, and winter trials were December through April. Target stocking density was 1.11 m2/pig in hoops and 0.74 m2/pig in confinement. Identical corn-based diets were fed ad libitum from 16 to 118 kg for 127 d. Pigs were scanned before harvest for backfat and loin muscle area. When seasons were merged (season × housing interaction, P ≥ 0.05), hoop-fed pigs had more backfat (21.8 ± 0.3 vs 20.8 ± 0.2 mm; P | 0.001), smaller loin muscle area (41.3 ± 0.3 vs 43.0 ± 0.2 cm2
Adolescent social interactions can have long-term effects on physiological responses to stressors in later-life. A larger adolescent group size can result in higher stressor-induced secretion of glucocorticoids in adulthood. The effect may be due to a socially-mediated modulation of gonadal hormones, e.g. testosterone. However, group size (number of animals) has been conflated with social density (space per animal). Therefore it is hard to determine the mechanisms through which adolescent group size can affect the stress response. The current study aimed to tease apart the effects of group size and social density during adolescence on the physiological stress response and gonadal hormone levels in adulthood. Adolescent zebra finches were housed in groups varying in size (2 vs. 5 birds per cage) and density (0.03m3 vs. 0.06m3 per bird) during early adolescence (day 40-60). Density was only manipulated in birds raised in groups of five. Glucocorticoid concentration secreted in response to a ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! Over the last decade, the OECD economies, the affluent Asian economies and the transition states have mostly experienced significant upswings in house prices. Upswings have ended with the emergence of the credit crunch since 2007. Dominant policy concerns related to housing have been affordability, in the upswing, and instability, in the downswing. These policy debates have been disconnected from each other and have been led respectively by social security and finance ministries and have seldom come to grips with how housing systems appear to operate. This paper assesses recent patterns of change, critiques the imprecision of the policy debates that emerged and stresses that the stickiness of the housing system requires fuller consideration in policymaking. Housing policies have their roles to play in reducing affordability difficulties and instabilities. Globalisation has changed housing systems and whilst posing new patterns to address also raise new possibilities
Cao et al. investigated the effect of enriched housing environments on tumor growth (see also Kappeler and Meaney). Mice living in enriched environments (EE mice) developed fewer, smaller, and slower-growing tumors when subcutaneously injected with B16 melanoma cells than control mice in standard group housing. In addition, EE mice showed altered serum concentrations of various circulating factors, such as increased adiponectin and decreased leptin concentrations. Sera from EE mice inhibited the in vitro proliferation of B16 melanoma cells, an effect also seen with sera from control mice pretreated with a neutralizing antibody directed against leptin. Gene expression analysis of nuclei in the hypothalamus revealed that the abundance of the mRNA encoding brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was higher in the arcuate nuclei of EE mice compared with that in control mice. Overexpression of BDNF in the hypothalamus resulted in decreased serum leptin concentrations and smaller tumors, whereas ...
The impetus for this study initially came from the fact that New Zealand is experiencing high rates of severe infectious diseases, notably a prolonged meningococcal disease epidemic (Baker, Martin et al. 1999), increasing rates of locally acquired tuberculosis (Kieft, Perks et al. 2000), and sustained high rates of rheumatic fever (Baker and Chakraborty 1996), childhood pneumonia (Grant 1999), and cellulitis (serious skin infections). A large case-control study of meningococcal disease in Auckland children showed that household crowding was the most important risk factor for this disease (Baker, McNicholas et al. 2000).. The link between overcrowded housing and infectious diseases has long been assumed, but the number of rigorous investigations of this link is still small. It is logical that household overcrowding increases transmission of infectious diseases, particularly those spread by respiratory means and direct person-to-person contact. Given that overcrowding increases contact between ...

Hi guys, Just wondering is there any difference between the standard gopro housing and the wrist housing? If yes, what is the difference(s)?? Thanks and cheers!
Good piece Kris.. In my opinion, the planning height restrictions are the number one problem as they force developers to waste land on low-rise toytown developments which are necessarily spread, out forcing greater car use to access local shops, schools, etc.. We could build at least twice as many dwellings on the same land, each with more floorspace if this were addressed.. Planning regulations should be changed to allow a default assumption of up to four or five storeys - unless objectors can demonstrate very good reasons why not. This would be a simple change.. Council Tax should also incorporate an element of Land Value Tax to encourage efficient land use (inefficient land use is more expensive for councils to provide services and raises less revenue currently). For new dwellings, this should represent perhaps (say) half the Council Tax valuation immediately and for older properties, it could be started at a low level and increased gradually over (say) 25 years to encourage more space ...
The site, SantÉlia has the notoriety for being the badlands of Cagliari. Often this image is exaggerated, contributing to the residents hostility to the city and vice versa. This spectacular stretch of waterfront land towards the southern tip of Cagliari happens to be disconnected from the rest of Cagliari due to massive infrastructural figures, which creates canyons in the urban fabric, also due to the negative ramifications arising from a dysfunctional social housing project, from 1970s. The project had specific goals including, reconnecting SantÉlia to the rest of Cagliari by colliding the island grids, bringing the city closer to the sea and thus developing the waterfront, revitalizing the social housing and improve conditions and to develop strategic nodes into multimodal urban ecologies. The focus was on de-canyonizing the fabric and overlaying the terrain with a new urban organism, which irrigates the territory and bridges the programmatic archipelago.. Rediscovering the spatial matrix ...

The dermal oncogenic potential of ethylenediamine (EDA) was assessed by applying 25 µ1 of a I% solution in deionized water to the skin of 50 male C3H/HeJ mice. This was the highest concentration not producing irritation or weight changes in a preliminary 2-week study. Two EDA samples (Nos. 1 and 2) from different production sources were tested. Applications were made thrice weekly until the death of the animals. A negative control group received deionized water only. This group and the EDA-treated groups were individually housed. A fourth group of 40 mice, housed 5 per cage, received 0.1% 3-methylcholanthrene (MC) in acetone as a positive control substance. A fifth group of 40 mice, housed 5 per cage, also received deionized water to determine the effect of group housing on survival. No skin tumors were observed in the EDA-treated groups. In the positive control group, however, 39 animals (98%) had skin tumors including 37 (92%) with confirmed squamous cell carcinomas. Eleven mice (22%) which ...

The proposed project includes a mix of residential uses with a total of 260 single-family residential dwelling units located on approximately 32 acres with an average density of 8.1 dwelling units per acre and would accommodate approximately 663 residents. The project would consist of five villages along the periphery of the site with a mix of three different housing types: 110 paseo units (alley-loaded single-family units), 72 patio units (groups of 2 to 8 single-family units accessed from a central alley), and 78 traditional housing units. The remaining 23 acres in the central portion of the site, including the creek corridor, would be devoted to recreational areas and open space uses including a trail system. ...
Most of the eggs Sodexo serves its customers come precracked in the liquid form. Virtually all of these eggs come from hens confined in tiny cages that are so cramped the birds cant even spread their wings. Each of these hens is given less space than a single sheet of paper on which to live for her entire life.. Virtually all of Sodexos bacon, sausage, and ham come from pork suppliers that confine pregnant breeding pigs inside crates so narrow the animals cant even turn around. These pigs are immobilized for their entire lives, often up to four years. This abuse is so cruel it has been banned throughout the entire European Union and eight U.S. states. In fact Compass Group, Sodexos primary competitor, recently announced its eliminating all of pork products that come from operations that use gestation crates by 2017.. Dr. Temple Grandin, perhaps the most famous animal scientist in the country, strongly opposes gestation crates stating "I feel very strongly that weve got to treat animals ...

A medical sensor for monitoring vital signs, in particular oxygen saturation, consists of a flexible carrier carrying the transmitter and receiver elements, and a housing element specifically adapted for application to a part of the human body, such as a finger. The flexible carrier may be used with a variety of different housing elements, such that it can be applied to virtually any limb or other part of the human body.
But conventional queue disciplines (e.g. FIFO, LIFO, etc.) dont maximize the number of people willing to wait in this buffer queue of folks who would have been mismatched if they had taken what was first offered to them. In solving the optimization problem, Jacob discovered/invented a new queue discipline that he calls uniform wait. People who choose to wait in the buffer queue for a given location are given different probabilities of being called to the head of the queue as different housing spaces arrive to be allocated, based on how many people have joined the buffer queue so far, so that the expected wait for any of the 1,…k people who might decide to wait is equal at the moment that they have to decide whether to join the buffer queue. That is, if you are the first to join, you will get the location you are waiting for if it arrives before someone else has joined, and after that you will have some probability of getting each apartment-at-the-right-location as one arrives, and that ...
The paper presents a new model switch for the investigation of the different aspects of switching arcs as well as their interaction with the involved parts of switching devices in low voltage appliances. The constructed model was designed to accomplish experimental series according to IEC 60947. Focusing as a first approach on the investigation of factors influencing the long-term behaviour of contact resistance, several experimental series combining Ag/Ni 10 contacts with different housing materials for the arc chamber walls were carried out. This paper presents the main characteristics of the constructed device and first results regarding its application with AC-arcs both from electrical and material engineering points of view.. ...
