This chapter presents an overview of the condition and quality of housing in Nigeria and its implication on respiratory health. Addressing housing issues offers public health practitioners an opportunity to assess an important social determinant of health. This chapter detailed the housing characteristics in Nigeria and revealed that respiratory health conditions, especially among children is associated with certain environmental factors that perturb the composition of the indoor air, and thus the housing quality. Drawing on this perspective, this chapter pursues the following questions: (1) What are the factors that affect the quality of housing where people spend most of their time daily? and (2) Given the housing condition in Nigeria, what housing-related factors influence the prevalence of respiratory health conditions especially among children? In the course of the discussion, we described the meteorological conditions of houses in relation to respiratory conditions, established a link between
In this cross-sectional study on poor housing conditions in association with child health in a disadvantaged immigrant population in Rosengård, Malmö, Sweden, housing conditions seemed to be associated with general health and asthma as observed by other, as well as with indicators for mental well-being, which is less evident from existing literature.. The housing conditions of the children were very poor with a high prevalence of cockroaches, especially in the study neighbourhood Herrgården, where 67% of the apartments had been sanitised from cockroaches and 27% of the apartments were infested with cockroaches at the time of the study. In the second study area, Törnrosen, cockroaches were present in only 6% of the households. Mould and dampness were also more common in Herrgården where mould was visible in 40% of the apartments compared with 13% in Törnrosen. Moreover, the general health of the children in Herrgården seemed poorer than in Törnrosen and in the general population of the ...
As a part of the 2020 Executive Budget proposal, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo highlights the need for good housing quality to stop more asthma cases.

Sri Mulyani noted that housing demand in Indonesia has reached 820 thousand to one million houses a year. Some 40 percent of the demand could be met through the involvement of private sector, 40 percent though independent wealthy citizens, and some 20 percent through the governments subsidy to poor people. The government in 2016 had allocated Rp24.4 trillion of its state budget for the development of 21,763 units of apartments and 158,367 stimulant assistances for housing quality improvement. In 2017, the number of apartments has increased to 13,253 units and stimulant assistances to 108 thousand for housing quality improvement. The government has also provided Rp9.2 trillion of funds for 83,493 low-income families in 2016 and Rp9.7 trillion of funds for 175 thousand low-income families in 2017 through Housing Finance Fund Management Center (PPDPP). As of now, state-owned secondary mortgage company PT Sarana Multigriya Finansial (SMF) has received Rp27.39 trillion of funding, including Rp1 ...

Downloadable ! Author(s): Hilary Williamson Hoynes & Daniel McFadden. 1994 Abstract: Equity in housing is a major component of household wealth in the United States. Steady gains in housing prices over the last several decades have generated large potential gains in household wealth among homeowners. Mankiw and Weil (1989) and McFadden (1993b) have argued that the aging of the US population is likely to induce substantial declines in housing prices, resulting in capital losses for future elderly generations. However, if households can anticipate changes in housing prices, and if they adjust their non-housing savings accordingly, then welfare losses in retirement could be mitigated. This paper focuses on two questions: (1) Are housing prices forecastable from current information on demographics and housing prices?; and (2) How are household savings decisions affected by capital gains in housing? We use metropolitan statistical area (MSA) level data on housing prices and demographic trends during the 1980

A new Resources for Renters website has been launched by the City of Austins Neighborhood Housing and Community Development Department as a central location for multiple tools and programs that can help renters secure safe, fair, and affordable housing. Many Austin renters spend more than half of their income on rent, and may have specific needs, or be at risk of displacement due to a number of factors-e.g., redevelopment, rent increases, changes in property management, emergency situations, evictions, etc.. The Resources for Renters site is designed to address client needs, with information about locating rental housing, dealing with landlords, getting assistance in paying for rent or utilities, knowing legal rights when being evicted, securing transitional housing assistance, and helping children obtain support services in schools. In the future, the website will also contain contact information for affordable housing units to help households find affordable housing more easily.. For further ...
Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing refers to a ban on smoking tobacco products in multiple‐unit or multi‐unit housing (MUH) complexes, which are defined as a public or private building, or portion thereof, containing two or more dwelling or other housing units including, but not limited to, a building with live/work units, apartment buildings, condominiums, senior citizen residences, nursing homes, housekeeping room/units, residential or single room occupancy hotels, and other multiple unit residential dwellings, group housing, or boarding facilities. According to recent estimates, within the United States, roughly 80 million (1 in 4) residents live in multi-unit housing complexes and more than 1 in 3 renters are exposed to secondhand smoke. The first ban on smoking in multi-unit housing in the U.S. occurred in Belmont, California due to the advocacy efforts of a group of low-income senior citizen residents who were frustrated by the drifting secondhand smoke from their neighbors. The City ...

Description: The American Community Survey (ACS) is a nationwide survey designed to provide communities a fresh look at how they are changing. The ACS replaced the decennial census long form in 2010 and thereafter by collecting long form type information throughout the decade rather than only once every 10 years. Questionnaires are mailed to a sample of addresses to obtain information about households -- that is, about each person and the housing unit itself. The American Community Survey produces demographic, social, housing and economic estimates in the form of 1-year, 3-year and 5-year estimates based on population thresholds. The strength of the ACS is in estimating population and housing characteristics. It produces estimates for small areas, including census tracts and population subgroups. Although the ACS produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates,it is the Census Bureaus Population Estimates Program that produces and disseminates the official estimates of the ...

Renters sometimes overlook the need for insurance based on the belief that they may not have a significant amount of personal possessions, or because the property is already insured by the owner.. While it is true that a rental property is insured by the owner, the destruction or loss of your personal belongings is not. But, thats not the only risk renters need to worry about.. The typical renters insurance policy will cover your possessions against losses arising from fire, smoke, lightening, theft, vandalism, explosion, wind storm, and water damage (excluding floods).. Even if you dont believe that the value of your personal possessions warrants insurance protection (though you may think differently after an inventory of their value), renters insurance covers other potential risks that can adversely impact your finances.. Renters insurance will cover damages and costs in the event that visitors are injured in your apartment or elsewhere by you, your pet, or a family member living with ...
Household characteristics pertain to the head of household or survey respondent. "A household consists of all people who occupy a particular housing unit as their usual residence, or who live there at the time of the interview and have no usual residence elsewhere. The usual residence is the place where the person lives and sleeps most of the time. This place is not necessarily the same as a legal residence, voting residence, or domicile. Households include not only occupants related to the householder but also any lodgers, roomers, boarders, partners, wards, foster children, and resident employees who share the living quarters of the householder. It includes people temporarily away for reasons such as visiting, traveling in connection with their jobs, attending school, in general hospitals, and in other temporary relocations. By definition, the count of households is the same as the count of occupied housing units ...
Quality of housing plays one of the key roles in a public health research, since inadequate housing may have direct or indirect negative impact on health. Higher satisfaction with housing was shown to be associated with higher income, higher age, a smaller family, higher education, being female and being an owner of a dwelling. The aim of our study is to identify the multiple sources of the satisfaction with housing in population of urban slums and rural areas in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We have used a combined variable "Housing Satisfaction", containing nine items related to satisfaction with different types of housing facilities (water, electricity, toilet etc.). Ordinal as well as binary multiple logistic regression models were applied to predict housing satisfaction. Rural residents (with 90 % house ownership) were much more satisfied with their housing than urban slum dwellers. Those respondents who perceived their area as "Very bad/Bad" to reach medical care reported significantly higher levels ...
Evidence is accumulating that homelessness and housing may be important factors that influence human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) sex and drug risk behaviors. Affordable housing dwelling unit ordinances. Allows certain localities to adopt affordable housing dwelling unit ordinances. The governing body of any locality, other than localities to which certain current affordable housing provisions apply, may by amendment to the zoning ordinances of such locality provide for an affordable housing dwelling unit program. Such program shall address housing needs, promote a full range of housing choices, and encourage the construction and continued existence of housing affordable to low-and-moderate-income citizens by providing for increases in density to the applicant in exchange for the applicant voluntarily electing to provide such affordable housing. Any local ordinance may authorize the governing body to (i) establish qualifying jurisdiction-wide affordable dwelling unit sales prices based on local market conditions, (ii) establish jurisdiction-wide affordable dwelling unit qualifying income guidelines, and (iii) offer incentives other than density increases,
Housing in Japan includes modern and traditional styles. Two patterns of residences are predominant in contemporary Japan: the single-family detached house and the multiple-unit building, either owned by an individual or corporation and rented as apartments to tenants, or owned by occupants. Additional kinds of housing, especially for unmarried people, include boarding houses (which are popular among college students), dormitories (common in companies), and barracks (for members of the Self-Defense Forces, police and some other public employees). An unusual feature of Japanese housing is that houses are presumed to have a limited lifespan, and are generally torn down and rebuilt after a few decades, generally twenty years for wooden buildings and thirty years for concrete buildings - see regulations for details. Figures from the 2012 Housing and Land Survey conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications indicate that Japan had 53,890,900 housing units at the time. Of these, ...
Renters already faced a dire situation before the pandemic hit, said Alexander Hermann, a researcher at the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies.. The center reported in January that vacancy rates for rentals had hit the lowest level in decades, pushing up rent far faster than income. At last count, one in four renters spent more than half their income on housing.. Then came the pandemic, which hit renters particularly hard financially. U.S. Census data shows about 19% of renters were late or deferred their rent payments in May. And about 31% of renters surveyed in June said they have little to no confidence they will be able to pay next months rent.. Renters tend to have lower incomes and to be more economically vulnerable than their homeowner counterparts. They also cannot tap into the equity in their homes as a line of credit in case of an emergency. A disproportionate number of renters are black, Hispanic and other minorities.. The COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project, a coalition of ...
Fax: (201) 798-5983. The Division of Housing Inspection can be traced back to 1967 when the first inspectors working out of the Health Department helped enforce municipal housing codes. In 1970 our office partnered with The State of New Jersey to enforce multiple dwelling and hotel housing laws. Since then we have expanded our services to provide fire safety inspections for all non-life hazard units (housing units 6 stories or less) in the City of Hoboken. Taller buildings are referred to the Hoboken Fire Department.. In 1997 our division evolved once again, forming what is now known as the Division of Housing Inspection. At this time, our city adopted the New Jersey Regulations for Maintenance of Hotels and Multiple Dwellings Law by ordinance. This made our division responsible for ensuring that hotels and multiple-family buildings are properly maintained and do not pose a threat to the health, safety and welfare of their residents, or the community in general. This remains the mandate of this ...
BACKGROUND: Several epidemiological studies have reported a higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms in subjects living in damp housing, but links with specific respiratory diseases such as asthma have not been satisfactorily established. METHODS: One hundred and two subjects with physician diagnosed asthma and 196 age and sex matched controls were interviewed; 222 (75%) then agreed to have their dwelling surveyed for dampness. The prevalence of both self-reported and observed dampness in the homes of the asthmatic subjects and controls were compared. Both asthma and the severity of the dampness were quantified so that the possibility of a dose-response relationship could be investigated. RESULTS: Asthmatic subjects reported dampness in their current (odds ratio (OR) 1.92, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18 to 3.12) and previous (OR 2.11, 95% CI 1.29 to 3.47) dwellings more frequently than control subjects. The surveyor confirmed dampness in 58 of 90 (64%) dwellings of asthmatic subjects ...

In the southwestern corner of Colorado, Centura Healths Mercy Regional Medical Center has partnered with Housing Solutions for the Southwest to prioritize housing vouchers for frequent users of the emergency room.. Under a program funded by the Catholic Health Initiatives, Mercy hired a social worker and a case manager to review records of frequent emergency room patients. They quickly realized how big an issue housing was for those patients. Many had diabetes and depended on insulin - which needs refrigeration. Kidney failure was one of the most costly diagnoses for the hospital.. Once patients received housing vouchers and found stable housing, though, costs began to drop.. "We now knew where they were. We knew that they had a safe place to live," said Elsa Inman, program coordinator at Mercy Regional. "We knew they would be more effective in managing their chronic conditions.". The patients with stable housing were more likely to make it to their primary care and specialist appointments, ...
Housing is HIV prevention. A growing body of research suggests that unstable housing is more strongly associated with increased HIV risk behaviors than individual characteristics of homeless and unstably housed individuals, highlighting the potential of housing as an independent structural intervention to reduce the spread of HIV. Persons who were homeless or unstably housed were two to six times more likely to have recently used hard drugs, shared needles, or exchanged sex than persons with stable housing, controlling for demographics, economic resources, health and mental health status, and service utilization. Persons whose housing status improved during the course of research were half as likely to use hard drugs, use needles, share needles or have unprotected sex as were individuals whose housing status did not change. Those whose housing status worsened over time were four times more likely than others to have recently exchanged sex. Indeed, research indicates that appropriate housing ...

The study supports the argument that after controlling for multiple measures of socioeconomic position, housing tenure is associated with self rated health in Germany. This contrasts with results from two previous studies, which found that home ownership was not significantly related to self rated health, depression, or functional limitations in Germany; however, these studies had smaller samples restricted to elderly populations.38,39 This study further found that the association between housing tenure and health may be mediated by elements of the physical and social environments in the home and surrounding community.. Though home ownership is related to higher levels of education and lower levels of poverty, controlling for education and poverty in multilevel analyses did not eliminate housing tenures association with health. Furthermore, home ownership in this study is unlikely to just reflect occupation status. In a subgroup analysis of 7150 full time employed people (not shown), it was ...

A new housing study suggests the mortgage loan market will shrink markedly once the refinancing wave passes because much of the next generation of first-time buyers lacks the cash to meet the down payment.. Even when money isnt a problem, future first-timers are more likely to face prejudiced lenders than in the past because minorities will make up a much bigger proportion of the newcomers, according to the report* by Harvard Universitys Joint Center for Housing Studies.. Those already in the market likely will take up part of that slack as these people - particularly baby boomers - swap homes or mortgage terms to fit their changing lifestyles. Changing migration patterns also will create lands of feast or famine, particularly if rates stay fairly low. New single-family home construction set 10-year highs last year in 19 states.. But for renters seeking to buy, conditions are pitiful.. With a median net wealth of only $2,096, only 25% of all young renter households could cover the 10% down27 ...

PHILADELPHIA - Ducks winger Patrick Eaves has been diagnosed with what is suspected to be Guillain-Barré syndrome, a neurological disorder where the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system.. The Ducks released details of Eaves condition Monday. Eaves was admitted to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach last week and continues to rest in stable condition after being discharged from the hospitals intensive care unit over the weekend.. Eaves had been dealing with what the Ducks called a lower-body injury since the beginning of training camp. He missed the entire preseason and the first three games before making his season debut on Oct. 11 against the New York Islanders, when he scored a goal in a 3-2 win.. Eaves played another game before being sidelined again. It was when he visited with specialists to detect the source of his feelings of physical weakness that the rare disorder was diagnosed and immediate hospitalization was required. The Ducks say he is expected to make a full ...
Downloadable! This paper documents the trends in the life-cycle profiles of net worth and housing equity between 1983 and 2004. The net worth of older households significantly increased during the housing boom of recent years. However, net worth grew by more than housing equity, in part because other assets also appreciated at the same time. Moreover, the younger elderly offset rising house prices by increasing their housing debt, and used some of the proceeds to invest in other assets. We also consider how much of their housing equity older households can actually tap, using reverse mortgages. This fraction is lower at younger ages, such that young retirees can consume less than half of their housing equity. These results imply that consumable net worth is smaller than standard calculations of net worth.
The second annual Housing Conference will be presented Tuesday in Ontario under joint sponsorship of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Inland Empire and Orange
The results were gathered by Gallups annual Economy and Personal Finance poll, which has tracked Americans perceptions of the housing market annually since 2005. In the years following the housing crisis, 2008-2011, Gallup said Americans were more likely to look for declining home values in their local area than any appreciation. That began to change by April 2012 when public optimism about home values outweighed pessimism by 33% to 23%. Now, more than five times as many Americans believe local home values will increase as believe they will decrease. There is a strong regional bias in the survey with those living in the West most likely to think home values will increase, at 72%.
