A single hyperthermic exposure can render cells transiently resistant to subsequent high temperature stresses. Treatment of rat embryonic fibroblasts with cycloheximide for 6 h after a 20-min interval at 45 degrees C inhibits protein synthesis, including heat shock protein (hsp) synthesis, and results in an accumulation of hsp 70 mRNA, but has no effect on subsequent survival responses to 45 degrees C hyperthermia. hsp 70 mRNA levels decreased within 1 h after removal of cycloheximide but then appeared to stabilize during the next 2 h (3 h after drug removal and 9 h after heat shock). hsp 70 mRNA accumulation could be further increased by a second heat shock at 45 degrees C for 20 min 6 h after the first hyperthermic exposure in cycloheximide-treated cells. Both normal protein and hsp synthesis appeared increased during the 6-h interval after hyperthermia in cultures which received two exposures to 45 degrees C for 20 min compared with those which received only one treatment. No increased hsp ...
Temperature plays a crucial role in the life history of insects. Recent climate change research has highlighted the importance of elevated temperature on malaria vector distribution. This study aims to examine the role of elevated temperatures on epidemiologically important life-history traits in the major malaria vector, Anopheles arabiensis. Specifically, the differential effects of temperature on insecticide-resistant and susceptible strains were examined. Two laboratory strains of A. arabiensis, the insecticide-susceptible SENN and the insecticide-resistant SENN DDT strains, were used to examine the effect of elevated temperatures on larval development and adult longevity. The effects of various elevated temperatures on insecticide resistance phenotypes were also examined and the biochemical basis of the changes in insecticide resistance phenotype was assessed. SENN and SENN DDT larvae developed at similar rates at elevated temperatures. SENN DDT adult survivorship did not vary between control and
by Sze Hang Fu, Peter S. Rodriguez & Prabhat Jha. Extreme temperatures, including cold spells and heat waves, have detrimental effects on human health. Most climate change projections foresee extreme weather becoming more prevalent. Indeed, various parts of the world have already begun to experience the impact of extremely hot weather. Much less attention has been given to the health effects of cold temperature ranges.. To tackle this knowledge gap, a recent Indian study estimated the association between extremely and moderately hot and cold temperatures with human mortality [1]. The study found that while extremely hot temperature had the highest mortality risk, moderately cold temperature contributed to the most deaths in India.. Read the full article here. The energy used by building sector accounts for approximately 40% of the total energy usage. In residential buildings, 30-60% of this energy is used for space heating which is mainly wasted by transmission heat losses. A share of 20-30% is lost by the discarded residential wastewater and the rest is devoted to ventilation heat loss.. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the thermal potential of residential wastewater for improving the performance of mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems during the coldest periods of year. The recovered heat from wastewater was used to preheat the incoming cold outdoor air to the MVHR in order to avoid frost formation on the heat exchanger surface.. Dynamic simulations using TRNSYS were used to evaluate the performance of the suggested air preheating systems as well as the impact of air preheating on the entire system. Temperature control systems were suggested based on the identified frost thresholds in order to optimally use the ...
Working with hot temperatures is in fact much harder task then working in cold. Its easier to warm up then to cool down.. The picture above was taken at 105F in August, near Las Vegas. It was really hard to do and it wasnt really necessary because I could make the same picture couple months later. But well, my travel was in August and I didnt really work with extreme heat before.. This is the third day of our vacation here in Philippines today. We had so much fun celebrating the birthday of my cousin last night and now we are about to go to the small island where mom lives. I cant wait to be there for i cannot stand the hotness here in the city. I feel so sorry for my kids because they are coughing due to the hot temperature here in the big city where we at right now. Both of my kids has dry cough and so am i. Soon as we get there later today i will boil some kalabo leaves a herbal leaves that eases cough. I prefer herbal leaves its more effective than the cough syrup that i bought the other day, seems like it didnt worked for my oldest son because he still got the dry cough like he wasnt taking medicine. My friend back in Utah is right, the medicines here arent that effective compared to the medicines we have over there. I just hope that my kids will get better soon as will be in a fresh small island ...
Thermal shock occurs when a thermal gradient causes different parts of an object to expand by different amounts. This differential expansion can be understood in terms of stress or of strain, equivalently. At some point, this stress can exceed the strength of the material, causing a crack to form. If nothing stops this crack from propagating through the material, it will cause the objects structure to fail. Failure due to thermal shock can be prevented by; Reducing the thermal gradient seen by the object, by changing its temperature more slowly or increasing the materials thermal conductivity Reducing the materials coefficient of thermal expansion Increasing its strength Introducing built-in compressive stress, as for example in tempered glass Decreasing its Youngs modulus Increasing its toughness, by crack tip blunting (i.e., plasticity or phase transformation) or crack deflection Borosilicate glass is made to withstand thermal shock better than most other glass through a combination of ...

A drape including a sensing device is disposed over a thermal treatment system having a basin recessed therein to form a drape container or receptacle within the basin for collecting a sterile medium. The thermal treatment system may either heat or congeal the sterile medium. The sensing device is typically disposed through the drape to provide a signal indicating the presence of liquid and/or leaks within the drape container to the system to facilitate control of system operation. In addition, the sensing device may be affixed to a plural basin drape utilized for a multiple basin thermal treatment system. The drape forms a drape receptacle within each basin, while a sensing device is typically disposed within each drape receptacle to detect the presence of liquid and/or a leak within that drape receptacle to facilitate control of system operation in substantially the same manner described above.
The microbial safety and stability of minimally processed foods are based on the application of combined preservative factors. Since microorganisms are able to develop adaptive networks to survive under conditions of stress, food safety may be affected, and therefore understanding of stress adaptive mechanisms plays a key role in designing safe food processing conditions. In the present study, the viability and the sublethal injury of |i|Listeria monocytogenes|/i| exposed to moderate heat (55°C) and/or essential oil compounds (carvacrol and thymol, 0.3 mM) treatments were studied. Synergistic effects were obtained when combining mild heat (55°C) with one or both essential oil compounds, leading to inactivation kinetics values three to four times lower than when using heat alone. All the treatments applied caused some injury in the population. The injury levels ranged from around 20% of the surviving population under the mildest conditions to more than 99.99% under the most

Elevated temperatures induce activation of the heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) which in somatic cells leads to heat shock proteins synthesis and cytoprotection. However, in the male germ cells (spermatocytes) caspase-3 dependent apoptosis is induced upon HSF1 activation and spermatogenic cells are actively eliminated. To elucidate a mechanism of such diverse HSF1 activity we carried out genome-wide transcriptional analysis in control and heat-shocked cells, either spermatocytes or hepatocytes. Additionally, to identify direct molecular targets of active HSF1 we used chromatin immunoprecipitation assay (ChIP) combined with promoter microarrays (ChIP on chip). Genes that are differently regulated after HSF1 binding during hyperthermia in both types of cells have been identified. Despite HSF1 binding to promoter sequences in both types of cells, strong up-regulation of Hsps and other genes typically activated by the heat shock was observed only in hepatocytes. In spermatocytes HSF1 binding

TY - JOUR. T1 - Temporal and mechanistic effects of heat shock on LPS-mediated degradation of IκBα in macrophages. AU - Grossman, Bruce J.. AU - Shanley, Thomas P.. AU - Odoms, Kelli. AU - Dunsmore, Katherine E.. AU - Denenberg, Alvin G.. AU - Wong, Hector R.. PY - 2002/6/17. Y1 - 2002/6/17. N2 - Previous studies demonstrated important interactions between the heat shock response and the IκBα/NF-κB pathway when these two pathways are induced sequentially. One such interaction involves the ability of heat shock to inhibit subsequent degradation of IκBα in response to a proinflammatory signal. Herein we investigated the temporal relationship between recovery from heat shock and inhibition of IκBα degradation, and the proximal mechanisms by which heat shock inhibits degradation of IκBα in macrophages. In RAW 264.7 murine macrophages, prior heat shock inhibited LPS-mediated IκBα degradation up to 4 h after recovery from heat shock, and this effect correlated with inhibition of ...

1\\&T=T_{0}\quad \implies \quad a_{\rm {T}}=1\,.\end{aligned}}} The superposition principle for complex dynamic moduli (G* = G + i G ) at a fixed frequency ω is obtained similarly: G ′ ( ω , T ) = G ′ ( a T ω , T 0 ) G ″ ( ω , T ) = G ″ ( a T ω , T 0 ) . {\displaystyle {\begin{aligned}G(\omega ,T)&=G\left(a_{\rm {T}}\,\omega ,T_{0}\right)\\G(\omega ,T)&=G\left(a_{\rm {T}}\,\omega ,T_{0}\right).\end{aligned}}} A decrease in temperature increases the time characteristics while frequency characteristics decrease. For a polymer in solution or molten state the following relationship can be used to determine the shift factor: a T = η T η T 0 {\displaystyle a_{\rm {T}}={\frac {\eta _{\rm {T}}}{\eta _{\rm {T0}}}}} where ηT0 is the viscosity (non-Newtonian) during continuous flow at temperature T0 and ηT is the viscosity at temperature T. The time-temperature shift factor can also be described in terms of the activation energy (Ea). By plotting the shift factor aT versus the ...
An electrochemical circuit to record time-temperature history has been realized by using the propagation of over-oxidation fronts in stripes of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiopehene) blended with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The over-oxidation front propagation has been characterized and related to the phase change of polyethylene glycol (PEG) electrolytes. The electrolytes were chosen to have a phase transition in the temperature interval to be monitored, resulting in large conductivity variations and thereby an easily interpreted output. A demonstrator has been fabricated and shown to detect a temperature increase and a following temperature decrease. This very simple device is cheap to produce and could be used to monitor the temperature of packages.. ...

Background Patients who suffer from chronic itch employ creative techniques to alleviate their itch, often using painful thermal stimuli, such as hot and very cold showers, as well as mechanical stimuli, such as scratching.. Objectives The present study examined whether the sensory perception of itch is attenuated by remote interactions between both thermal and mechanical stimuli and afferent information related to itch.. Patients and methods Itch was induced with histamine iontophoresis in 21 healthy young subjects. Repetitive thermal stimuli including innocuous warmth, innocuous cool, noxious cold and noxious heat as well as scratching were applied 3-cm distal to the area of histamine iontophoresis. Subjects rated their perceived intensity of histamine-induced itch with a computerized visual analogue scale.. Results Itch intensity ratings were significantly reduced during each period of scratching and repeated noxious heat and cold. Innocuous cooling and warming did not significantly alter ...

Thermal Shock Resistance is an ability of material to withstand sharp changes in temperature. If a ceramic material is rapidly cooled, its surface reaches the temperature of cooling environment and tends to contract (thermal contraction). Since the interior regions of the material are still hot, thermal contraction of the skin surface is impossible. This leads to formation of tensile stress (thermal stress) in the skin. Such thermal stresses may cause cracks and consequent failure. Thermal shock resistance of a material may be estimated in accordance to the formula: Rs = (λ*σF)/(α*E) Where Rs - thermal shock resistance; λ - thermal conductivity; σF - flexural strength α -coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE); E - modulus of elasticity. Sensitivity of ceramic materials to thermal shock may be also determined by experimental method (Hasselmann Method). In this method a specimen (flexural test specimen) is heated to a specified temperature and then quenched. The specimen cools rapidly by ...

In this work, the potential of spectroscopic techniques was studied to investigate heat-induced changes occurring during the application of thermal treatments on cod (Gadus morhua L.) fillets. Vacuum-packed samples were thermally treated in a water bath at 50, 60, 70 and 80 °C for 5 and 10 min, and further stored for one, four, and eight days at 4 ± 1 °C before analysis. Several traditional (including cooking loss, drip loss, texture, protein solubility, protein oxidation, and color) and spectroscopic (fluorescence and diffuse reflectance hyperspectral imaging) measurements were conducted on the same samples. The results showed a decrease in fluorescence intensity with increasing cooking temperature and storage time, while the impact of cooking time was only noticeable at low temperatures. Diffuse reflectance data exhibited a decrease in absorbance, possibly as a result of protein denaturation and increased scattering at higher cooking temperatures. Both fluorescence and diffuse reflectance ...
People with this disorder suffer life-threatening elevations of temperature during a particular kind of general anesthesia. When mice with this mutation exercise in a hot room or are even exposed for a short time to the temperatures of a Houston summer, they suffer all the hallmarks of malignant hyperthermia before they die. Recent evidence suggests that this heat sensitivity is also found in humans with comparable RyR1 mutations.. In her studies of muscle fatigue (another focus of the laboratory), Hamilton and her colleagues studied a compound called AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside) recently shown by Vihang Narkar, Ronald Evans and colleagues at the Salk Institute to slow muscle fatigue and improve muscle endurance without exercise - making it popularly known as exercise in a pill, said Hamilton.. When we gave AICAR to the (heat-sensitive) mice, it was 100 percent effective in preventing heat-induced deaths, even when we gave it no more than 10 minutes before the ...

Specimens of electrolytically pure nickel were annealed for 30 min at 500C to remove the surface work hardness resulting from their preparation, some of the specimens were polished mechanically, and all were subjected to thermal treatment which consisted in heating to 900C, holding for 5 min, and cooling in water (25C). The specimens were then analyzed by x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The results indicate that the mechanisms of failure of thin and massive nickel specimens are substantially different: In the case of failure of thin specimens, a predominant role is played by a vacancy mechanism, whereas in massive specimens at considerable heating and cooling rates the thermal stresses produced are large enough to activate the dislocatory process of failure.(*NICKEL
