ABSTRACT: The changes in packaged fresh-cut grape quality and microbial growth as affected by mild heat treatments and the retention of grape cap stems during 5 °C storage were evaluated. Each individual grape was either manually pulled off (stemless) from the stems, or cut (cut stem) to allow for a 1- to 2-mm cap stem remaining on the berry. The samples were sanitized in 100 mg/L chlorine solution for 1 min, followed by a mild heat treatment in a water bath (45 °C, 8 min) or an oven (55 °C, 5 min). After cooling, the berries were packaged in rigid trays sealed with a gas permeable film and stored at 5 °C. Product quality and decay rate were evaluated periodically during storage. The results indicate that in the package headspace for hot water treatment of stemless grapes, partial pressures of O2 declined significantly (P , 0.05) less and C2H4 increased significantly (P , 0.001) less than for the control and hot air treatment. In this work, combustion and pollutant formation phenomena in a direct injection Diesel engine are studied using n-Dodecane as fuel. The initial part of work is to validate the results from three dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the engine experimental data. Various state-of-the-art models for simulating the droplet spray, impingement, collision, boiling and combustion are employed with the full kinetic mechanism. Extended coherent flame model for three zones predicts the averaged in-cylinder pressure data within 5 % of the experimental readings. CO, CO2, UBHC and NOx are found to be within the error limits between the CFD and experimental results. The CFD study is further extended towards the addition of little EGR for achieving lower NOx emissions and partial injection of fuel in the intake stroke followed by main injection. Dynamic Brazilian disc (or splitting) tests were carried out to study the characteristics of energy dissipation and failure behavior of heat-treated granite under impact loading. Six groups of granite samples were treated at the temperatures of 25°C, 100°C, 300°C, 500°C, 700°C, and 900°C, respectively. Each group of heat-treated samples was tested with three impact velocities of 5.4, 7.7 and 13.7 m/s in a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar. An average change rate of incident energy (ACRIE) was proposed to characterize the loading rate effect. The effects of treatment temperature and ACRIE on the energy dissipation and the failure patterns of samples under impact loading were investigated. Enzymatic Time Temperature Integrators (TTIs) were used to determine the heat treatment efficiency. TTIs are small unattached measurement devices which contain a thermally labile enzyme: determination of the degree of degradation of the enzyme at the end of the thermal process enables the integrated temperature history to be obtained.
