At Smilow, VA patients have access to a wide range of specialized radiation techniques including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), gamma-knife radiosurgery for intracranial tumors, and linac-based stereotactic body radiosurgery (SBRT) for tumors of the lung, liver, and spine. An attending physician and a resident from radiation oncology are actively involved in the multidisciplinary tumor board at the West Haven VA hospital, and work closely with VA physicians to coordinate care.. ...
My experience working with Veterans Affairs Health Administration (VHA) has been very satisfying and unique. I feel that VHA offers the right balance and opportunity to both young and mid-career nephrologists. The aging veterans with a myriad of complex problems are always respectful and grateful for the care they receive at a VA Medical Center (see fact sheet about the kidney disease and veteran population) . The VHA offers the right combination of integrated primary care services, pharmacy, home monitoring services, and patient education support to provide optimal outpatient care. The major hurdles one encounters while managing patients in a VA hospital are limited resources for providing dialysis and transplant care. I see these limitations as a major opportunity to map a career path unlike that chosen by new nephrology graduates.. I was introduced to the VHA system in 2001 because of my desire to settle down in the United States. I joined as a staff nephrologist at the Overton Brooks ...

Aidan Knaus is quite the chatterbox.. He doesnt simply push patients from one place to the next. His intense interest in striking up long conversations has made him the most requested volunteer at a veterans hospital in Minnesota.. Whats especially interesting about Aidan is the time when he was a boy, and his mother was unsure hed ever talk at all. Shed even begun to teach him sign language.. Diagnosed with ADHD and high-functioning Autism earlier this year, the eighth grade student has had to overcome a number of obstacles but his gift of gab now comes naturally-and he is using it for good.. Veteran Makes it His New Mission to Hand Out Hugs. "He loves meeting new people and having conversations, learning about peoples lives," his mom, Tanya Hundeby, told KARE News.. As soon as he was old enough to volunteer-the day after his 13th birthday-Aidan began escorting residents at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center to the canteen, to therapy, to the chapel, logging over 160 volunteer hours in just ...
The Labour leader says more than 2,000 patients faced a 12-hour wait for a bed in hospital last month, including a 92-year-old RAF veteran.
This study was funded and launched as an internal program evaluation regarding the effects of a four-session weekly individualized cognitive therapy program called the Mind Freedom Plan (MFP) on substance use outcomes, impulsivity, and substance abuse treatment retention in veterans admitted to the intensive outpatient (treatment) program (IOP) for substance abuse at the Richmond Virginia Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center (RICVAMC). Substance use and treatment retention outcomes were compared between veterans randomly assigned to the MFP versus treatment as usual (TAU), which consisted of typical case-management-oriented weekly individual sessions. Veteran participants were approached and consented within a week of admission to the RICVAMC IOP and randomly assigned to either an MFP or TAU practitioner. Assignment was constrained by practitioner new-patient availability in order to place veterans into individualized care sessions as soon as possible.. Participants ...

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. (AP) - The Spokane Valley Fire Department has fired a captain who continued to send religious emails from his department account despite numerous orders to stop. The Spokesman-Review reported that Capt. Jon Sprague, who runs the Spokane County Christian Firefighter Fellowship, has been disciplined several times for sending the emails. This year, he received two letters of reprimand and a suspension before the Spokane Valley Board of Fire Commissioners voted unanimously to fire him on Monday. Sprague sent emails to a group of firefighters who agreed to receive the notices. They contained information about upcoming meetings and events of the Christian fellowship group. Department attorney Mike McMahon says sending the emails was an unlawful use of department resources.. ...
The fiscal cliff appears to be history: Late last night congress passed legislation to avoid it. The house voted to accept a plan that originated in the senate on New Years Eve. The president says he will sign it, but for now hes headed back to Hawaii to rejoin his family on vacation. Meanwhile, you will probably still have more taxes taken out of your paycheck this year. Thats because there was a temporary reduction in Social Security taxes put in place a while back that expired yesterday and wasnt renewed.. ...

INTRODUCTION: At the population level among otherwise "healthy" men, obesity is associated with prostate cancer mortality. However, few studies analyzed the associations between obesity and long-term progression after surgery, such as castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and prostate cancer-specific mortality (PCSM). We examined the effect of obesity at the time of radical prostatectomy (RP) on long-term prostate cancer-specific outcomes among men treated at Veterans Affairs Hospitals in the USA.. METHODS: We combined data from patients undergoing RP at six Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (West Los Angeles, San Diego, and Palo Alto, CA; Augusta, GA; and Durham and Asheville, NC) into the SEARCH database. Our exposure, body mass index (BMI) was abstracted from the medical records at the time of but prior to RP and categorized as normal weight (,25 kg/m2), overweight (25-29.9kg/m2), and obese (≥30kg/m2). Crude and adjusted Cox models accounting for known risk cofactors were used to ...

For those unfamiliar with nogos particularly incomprehensible form of English, let me translate:. "Last December, I woke up late at night almost unable to breathe. My wife called 9/11. As I am a substitute teacher, I have no work-related medical benefits. For 18 years my wife has worked in a kindergarten classroom, and (she/I/we am/are) ineligible for benefits through her employment either.. When the Denver Fire Department paramedics showed up with an ambulance, we asked for me to be taken to the Denver Veterans Administration hospital, as I am a veteran with a service-related disability. We were informed that there is no ambulance service to the Denver VA hospital, so they took me to Denvery County Hospital. There, they treated my inflamed uvula and I was released after three days in the Intensive Care Unit. We are currently paying off the $15,000 hospital bill at the rate of $275/month.". nogo wanted to use his story to show how bad the health care system is. Instead, he showed just how good ...

TUESDAY, June 3, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The antibiotic Zithromax (azithromycin) significantly lowers older pneumonia patients risk of death but slightly increases their risk of heart attack, a new study indicates. Researchers analyzed data from more than 65,000 patients aged 65 and older who were treated for pneumonia at Veterans Administration hospitals between 2002 and 2012. About half of them received azithromycin and half did not.
