Clostridium perfringens, the third most common cause of foodborne illness in the United States (1), most often causes a self-limited, diarrheal disease lasting 12-24 hours. Fatalities are very rare, occurring in ,0.03% of cases (1). Death usually is caused by dehydration and occurs among the very young, the very old, and persons debilitated by illness (2). On May 7, 2010, 42 residents and 12 staff members at a Louisiana state psychiatric hospital experienced vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Within 24 hours, three patients had died. The three fatalities occurred among patients aged 41-61 years who were receiving medications that had anti-intestinal motility side effects. For two of three decedents, the cause of death found on postmortem examination was necrotizing colitis. Investigation by the Louisiana Office of Public Health (OPH) and CDC found that eating chicken served at dinner on May 6 was associated with illness. The chicken was cooked approximately 24 hours before serving and not ...

Dixmont State Hospital (originally the Department of the Insane in the Western Pennsylvania Hospital of Pittsburgh) was a hospital located northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Built in 1862, Dixmont was once a state-of-the-art institution known for its highly self-sufficient and park-like campus, but a decline in funding for state hospitals and changing philosophies in psychiatric care caused the hospital to be closed in 1984. After more than two decades of abandonment, it was finally demolished in 2006. The campus spanned a total of 407 acres (165 ha). Reed Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Western Pennsylvania Hospital at Pittsburgh ended its first year of operation in 1853, and it was evident that there were a greater number of patients in jails and almshouses than could be provided for in the 26 beds designated for that express purpose at the hospital. Managers of the hospital used a $10,000 appropriation from the state to purchase a large amount of farmland ...

A judge ruled that Anthony Montwheeler was not competent to stand trial for an assault and two murders that prosecutors say he committed just weeks after his release from the Oregon State Hospital.
This state hospital initially started out as a farm colony to take on patients from nearby institutions serving the city. Once the state took over the property, it was renamed and drastically grew in size. The campus spanned over 1000 acres and consisted of over 100 buildings. At the time, it was the largest asylum by land area alone. Two of the buildings constructed were unlike any other at any similar institution. One building was a series of ward groupings connected to each other by corridors. The building itself spanned across one mile in length. The other building featured a curved architecture, almost that of a half circle. Small ward structures spanned out from the half circle curved corridor, all connecting to a central hub unit. The powerplant of this hospital was one of the largest ever built for hospital complex. A large medical building was built to serve the growing population of the hospital. The hospital even had its own train station designed for visitors of the hospital. In the 1950s

Received its first patients in 1903. The state budgeted $150,000 to build the hospital itself and in 1901, an additional $120,000 went for new buildings and equipment. Five cottages were built for patients and from 1901 to 1902 a dining room, kitchen, power house, barns, laundry, ice plant, the folk building (set aside for nurses, attendants and recreation), an administration building, the Hall building, the superintendents residences and the Harrison Building, a receiving building and acute care hospital, were constructed. Dr. William Hall admitted the first three patients in 1903 and by 1904, the population stood at 332. By 1907, 795 patients were housed at the hospital. By 1922, the hospital was so crowded the superintendents home was converted to housing for women patients. In 1925, the Hyde Building was built and the Folk Building was converted to house female patients. Another milestone was marked in 1925 when Dr. Emmett Hoctor took over as superintendent of Farmington State Hospital, then known

Jails and prisons have become de facto psychiatric hospitals (institutions) which warehouse the seriously mentally ill. We know that 20 percent of inmates in jails and 15 percent of inmates in state prisons have a serious mental illness (356,000), more than 10 times the number of those that remain at state psychiatric hospitals. Seventy percent of adolescents in juvenile correctional facilities have a mental health condition, and 40 percent of individuals with serious mental illnesses have been in jail or prison at some time in their lives. In 2016, the largest mental institutions in the United States are the Cook County Jail (Chicago) and the Los Angeles County Jail. An estimate from the Vera Institute of Justice found that 80 percent of those booked in county jails dont receive any treatment after they get there. To give you some perspective, in the 1950s, there were over 500,000 psychiatric beds in state hospitals and now were at around 35,000. Inadvertently, our jails and prisons have ...

When one looks at the restructuring of state-owned enterprises the most striking feature of the transformation, in class terms, is the diffusion of surplus value distribution decisions to the enterprise level. The first step in the process was the separation of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) from the governmental bureaucracy and their reorganization into private capitalist corporations. Indeed, the 8th National Peoples Congress recognized the former distinction in changing the appellation used to describe SOEs from state-run enterprises (guoying qiye) to state-owned enterprises (guoyou minying), although in this paper and elsewhere I have used the convention of referring to enterprises on either side of this divide by the term state-owned enterprise. In any event, this separation of the SOEs from the governmental bureaucracy (the transition from guoying qiye to guoyou minying) was significant because changing the site of surplus value distribution to the enterprise creates possibilities for ...
The major findings of this study were that patients for whom court-ordered medication was sought (MOO group), and, with few exceptions, obtained, were more likely to be transferred to state hospitals for long-term inpatient care and less likely to link to the next level of care after discharge, compared with similar patients who accepted treatment. These findings were essentially the same when MOO group patients were compared with patients who initially refused but ultimately accepted medication.. The relatively high rate of state hospital transfers in the MOO group strongly suggests that persistent medication refusal in a hospital setting may be a risk factor for treatment refractory status. Patients are transferred to a state hospital when discharge to the community is considered unsafe and they have not responded to many months of aggressive inpatient treatment, typically four to six months in our setting. It is interesting to speculate that there may have been an interaction between ...
Bruffett said KDADS will help patients pay for appropriate care outside the state hospital system as needed.. We do have right now in front of the Legislature a governors budget amendment to add $3.5 million to assist during the renovation phase at Osawatomie State Hospital, she said. That is for the diversionary funds needed for folks that might otherwise be in the state hospital. That governors budget amendment has support in both chambers of the Legislature.. But for the committee, the long-term issue is determining how to allocate scarce financial resources in the mental health system. Topeka Police Captain Bill Cochran said the reality is that jails are the biggest mental health providers. But he said innovative training programs for officers and the general public are beginning to reduce the number of people with mental illnesses in the Shawnee County Jail.. Community-based services is where its at, and thats whats going to make everything work, Cochran said. The whole idea ...

US state mental hospitals were rapidly depopulated in the decades following 1955. This was a demographic phenomenon of major proportion. The introduction of antipsychotics in 1954 has often been considered instrumental in this population movement. To date, studies of the role of antipsychotics in deinstitutionalization have been state specific, methodologically weak, inconsistent in their findings and fail to consider inter-state differences which could reveal previously unknown causal variables. This study used US Census data and pooled cross sectional time-series analysis to estimate the impact of chlorpromazine and policy changes on mental hospital population movement. To that end, the population movement of US state mental hospitals from 1925 to 1966 by state was analyzed. Furthermore, this study analyzes the overall resident count, discharges, first admissions and readmissions as well the resident count and first admissions of nine diagnostic categories and seven age groups. Population movement was

Objective: Risperidone and olanzapine are the 2 most widely prescribed second-generation antipsychotics. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of risperidone and olanzapine using duration of hospitalization as the primary outcome measure. This outcome was selected as it is an indirect measure of how well patients are responding to the medication and represents a real world endpoint relevant to practicing hospital psychiatrists. Method: The study was done at a large state psychiatric hospital in North Carolina from 2001 to 2003. Subjects were eligible for inclusion if they required treatment with an antipsychotic (e.g., positive symptoms) and were able to provide informed consent. Eighty-five patients entered the study and were randomly assigned to risperidone (N = 40) or olanzapine (N = 45) as their initial antipsychotic. Treatment was naturalistic, and dosing was based on the discretion of the treating physician. Results: There was no significant difference in the mean ...

Background: Neurosyphilis, also known as general paresis of the insane, at one time accounted for a large portion of admissions to state psychiatric facilities. With the introduction of antibiotics, neurosyphilis is now considered very rare. Method: Chart review was performed on patients diagnosed with neurosyphilis who were admitted to a state psychiatric hospital in Raleigh, N.C., during 2002. Results: We identified 3 cases of confirmed neurosyphilis, representing 0.1% of adult admissions, diagnosed in newly admitted psychiatric patients. None of the patients were immunocompromised. Response to antibiotic treatment was poor. Conclusions: Given the increase in primary and secondary syphilis reported in the 1980s and early 1990s, routine screening of psychiatric patients for the presence of syphilis should be considered. ...
With limited resources available for conservation, it is imperative that efficient state conservation plans be developed to protect species of greatest conservation need (GCN species). Through the Inventory and Conservation Planning (ICP) project, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Alabama Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit have collected data on GCN species and habitat on select state-owned lands. Using this information, we proposed development of decision support tools that will provide a spatial depiction of the most useful areas for conservation of each vertebrate GCN species and a relative conservation utility of each study area for the conservation of GCN species. We first determined which species occurred on ICP lands and where it would be ecologically appropriate to manage for them. Alabama GAP Analysis Project (AL-GAP) data were used to identify potential habitat in the Southeastern Plains ecoregion of Alabama. We then identified those areas ...
This chapter focuses on the governance ecology of Chinas state-owned enterprises (SOEs). More specifically, it examines the mechanisms of state capitalism in China by analyzing the distinctive system of industrial organization in which the countrys largest SOEs were assembled and currently operate. After providing the conceptual background, the chapter charts the origins of Chinese corporate capitalism and how it is presently organized. It then considers the key components and main organizational characteristics of the national business groups and contrasts them with those in Japan and Korea. It also explores SASACs behavior as a controlling shareholder within the larger institutions of the party-state and how it shares the role of controlling shareholder with the Communist Party. Finally, it assesses the implications of the analysis for comparative corporate governance scholarship.

MIAMI HERALD) A baby was born with severe brain damage after caregivers at the states largest mental hospital dismissed a womans cries for help. Held against her will at Floridas largest state mental hospital, and fearing that she was about to give birth, a 34-year-old woman became so frantic in her efforts to get medical care that she called 911, twice. Theres nobody here that can help me right now, and Im pregnant, she said.. But when the emergency dispatcher asked to speak with a caregiver, she was told there was nothing to worry about: This is a mental hospital, a supervisor, Eddie McMillian said. She says shes going into labor; shes not going into labor … Cant send her nowhere right now.. But she was, indeed, in labor. And her son was born hours later with profound brain damage. He remains on a ventilator, perhaps permanently.. In a just-released 88-page report by the inspector general of the Department of Children & Families - which operates Florida State Hospital in ...
The objectives of this study were (1) to compare long-term patterns of violent crime for mentally disordered patients and for prison inmates, and (2) to evaluate the predictive validity of a diagnosis of schizophrenia for subsequent arrests for violent crimes. For purposes of this data collection, violent crimes were defined as including murder, manslaughter, rape, assault, kidnapping, and sodomy. The study analyzed individual state mental hospital patients and inmates of state prisons in New York State over a 20-year span. In the process of obtaining information regarding the individuals, three different areas were focused on: hospital, incarceration, and arrest histories. Variables for hospital histories include inpatient hospitalizations, admission and discharge dates, legal status for all state hospitals through 1988, primary diagnosis for target and most recent admissions, and placements in New York State Department of Correctional Services mental hospitals. Incarceration history variables ...

Although the community health service system is now established in China, the utilisation of the community health service institutions is low due to the lack of a gate-keeping role of the primary health service providers and referrals among the three-tiered health service institutions. In addition to this, patients who can afford to pay, often seek best services in big hospitals to guarantee the quality of care. Thus, the need of guiding the patients to the community health services and increasing the utilisation of the community health service institutions is becoming an urgent problem, which hinders the future development of community health services. This study focuses on the question of how to increase the utilisation of Chinese community health centres (HCs). A cross-sectional Base-line Survey of Chinese City Community Health Service System Building using the multi-staged cluster sampling was conducted to collect data from all HCs in 28 key contact cities. Relevant indicators of totally 1790 HCs

To study the leisure activities, social participation, and organizational participation of mental patients before hospital admission, a three-part research instrument was developed consisting of a structured interview schedule requesting information on the patients leisure activities, a self-administered questionnaire entitled Survey of Opinions completed by the patient, and a form for compiling demographic data. The sample consisted of 300 newly admitted patients in a state mental hospital, male and female, aged 16 years and over. Data on patients characteristics are presented in 21 tables. Data on leisure activities and organizational participation are presented in 17 additional tables, with breakdowns for sex and age (under or over 30 years). Some major findings were that few patients (under 10%) participated in community-sponsored recreational or adult education or social activities, fewer than 10% participated in church-related activities, and the great majority had very
Serious problems persist at Wyomings largest mental health facility four years after employees left an incapacitated woman on a couch without food, water or bathroom use for over 24 hours, according to two groups that provide legal and advocacy services to patients in need.. They include a suicide, attempted suicides, the sexual assault of a patient by an employee, patient-on-patient and patient-on-staff assaults, incorrect medicine dosing and excessive patient restraint, said representatives of Wyoming Protection and Advocacy and Wyoming Guardianship Corp., which act as legal guardians for dozens of patients at Wyoming State Hospital.. There are systemic failures at the Wyoming State Hospital, some which have led to very serious and in some cases life-threatening conditions, Jeanne Thobro, director of Cheyenne-based Protection and Advocacy, told The Associated Press.. There are systemic failures at the Wyoming State Hospital, some which have led to very serious and in some cases life-threatening conditions, Jeanne Thobro, director of Cheyenne-based Protection and Advocacy, told The Associated Press.. Many of the problems stem from inadequate staffing, Thobro said. The Wyoming Department of Health has difficulty recruiting psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental-health employees to the facility in Evanston, in far-western Wyoming, and statewide, she said.. Workers found patient Linda Gelok abandoned on a dayroom couch at the State Hospital in 2015. They needed her moved so they could work on a television. She reeked of urine and had an awkwardly kinked neck, court records said. Ants crawled on sores on her feet.. Wyoming Guardianship Corp., which represents Gelok, sued the state health agency on her behalf, alleging the poor treatment violated her rights. In October, the Wyoming Supreme Court ruled the case could proceed, saying its details shock the ...

80 hospitals in Massachusetts are going public with information about the frequency with which their patients develop pressure ulcers (bed sores, pressure ulcers, decubitus ulcers) while hospitalized. As part of a joint effort between the states hospital association and a consumer information group called Patients First, acute care, rehabilitation, and long-term acute hospitals disclosed pressure ulcer data on their patients. Pressure ulcer rates from individual hospitals were then compared with state averages for similar hospitals. The states hospitals earlier went public with information on the number of falls sustained by hospitalized patients, as well as nurse staffing data. The purpose of the program, according to a representative of a health quality organization, is twofold: to provide the public with information about hospital performance based on quality indicators like pressure ulcer prevalence, falls, and staffing; and, to assist hospitals to improve the care they provide. SEATTLE (AP) - Washington is facing its own COVID-19 crisis and has little capacity to help neighboring Idaho deal with an overwhelming surge of cases driven by unvaccinated people, state hospital executives and doctors said Monday. Taya Briley, executive vice president of the Washington State Hospital Association, called the situation very sobering during a media briefing, saying Washington faces its worst COVID wave since the pandemic began - even before big recent events like fall fairs and a return to school.. Hospitals are canceling necessary surgeries and taking longer to deal with heart attacks and strokes because COVID patients are taking up so many beds. Nearly 1,700 patients are hospitalized with COVID, up from 350 in June and early July before the delta variants spread among the unvaccinated drove the spike, Briley said.. More than 95% of hospitalized patients are unvaccinated - a staggering amount of unnecessary suffering, Briley said. Some 260 patients are on ventilators.. When ...

That doesnt say anything about late registrations.. If the pages were microfilmed out of order, that information is often in a Descriptive Pamphlet at NARA, but I havent been able to locate one yet.
