WASHINGTON - February 11, 2008 - National Education Association President Reg Weaver discussed the role of labor unions in the development of the civil rights movement in a speech today before government workers. Weaver delivered the keynote speech to approximately 350 attendees at the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Womens and Fair Practices Departments 2008 Civil Rights Luncheon. The labor movement has fought for fair wages, fair treatment in the workplace, and a fair chance to get ahead, said Weaver. The labor movement has been a force for fairness in every aspect of American life - including the civil rights movement.. In his speech, Weaver recalled the efforts of Black civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph to organize sleeping car porters on passenger trains. Randolph recognized that the labor movement represented the great masses of workers, and therefore has the moral responsibility for its commitment to the principle of civil rights. Randolph went on to ...

FBI vs. John Birch Society on civil rights movement Re: * Alan Stangs Its Very Simple book -and- * Highlander Folk School controversy, Martin Luther King Jr photo Control and domination of the civil rights movement by subversive elements is a constant theme in JBS literature during the 1960s. In the June 1965 JBS Bulletin, Robert Welch observed: Our task must be simply to make clear that the movement known as civil rights is Communist-plotted, Communist-controlled, and in fact...serves only Communist purposes. In the November 1965 JBS Bulletin, Mr. Welch strongly recommends Alan Stangs book entitled Its Very Simple: The True Story of Civil Rights, because, in Welchs words... It gives the whole picture of the civil rights development, as a part of Communist strategy, more completely and convincingly than anything else available. Again, in May 1966, Mr. Welch used the JBS Bulletin to praise the Stang book: This book, because of its ...

Follow us on Twitter: @BaylorUMedia Media contact: Terry Goodrich, (254) 710-3321 WACO, Texas (Feb. 3, 2015) - In honor of Black History Month, the Baylor Universitys department of history will host scholar Debbie Z. Harwell, Ph.D., managing editor for Houston History magazine. Harwell will present a lecture based on her book, Wednesdays in Mississippi: White Gloves and Quiet Power as Catalysts for Change, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, in Morrison Hall, Room 120. This book is significant in that it gives us a very different picture of who was involved in the civil rights movement. First and foremost, it emphasizes the role women played in civil rights activities, said James SoRelle, Ph.D., Baylor professor of history. Harwells book tells the story of a group of middle-aged, middle-class African-American and white women in the North during the mid-1960s. Inspired by the upcoming Freedom Summer campaigns, teams of women sponsored by the National Council of Negro Women began to fly down to ...
The Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren, a liberal Republican, issued Brown vs. Board of education in 1954, declaring legal segregation to be unconstitutional. It marked the culmination of a judicial movement that had been underway for a decade. It had the short-term effect of ending segregated schools in border states, and the long-term effect of ending legalized segregation in schools. Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy to a lesser degree, and Lyndon Johnson to a major degree became proactive in the Civil Rights movement. Johnson in particular built a coalition that included white churches, Jews, and labor unions, as well as many Republicans such as Everett Dirksen, to build a majority of the northern leadership in favor of action. The Democratic South filibustered but failed stop passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended Jim Crow, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which guaranteed federal oversight of voting rights. In 1957, Governor Orville Faubus of ...

The Jim Crow system employed terror as a means of social control,[55] with the most organized manifestations being the Ku Klux Klan and their collaborators in local police departments. This violence played a key role in blocking the progress of the civil rights movement in the late 1950s. Some black organizations in the South began practicing armed self-defense. The first to do so openly was the Monroe, North Carolina, chapter of the NAACP led by Robert F. Williams. Williams had rebuilt the chapter after its membership was terrorized out of public life by the Klan. He did so by encouraging a new, more working-class membership to arm itself thoroughly and defend against attack.[56] When Klan nightriders attacked the home of NAACP member Dr. Albert Perry in October 1957, Williams militia exchanged gunfire with the stunned Klansmen, who quickly retreated. The following day, the city council held an emergency session and passed an ordinance banning KKK motorcades.[57] One year later, Lumbee ...

Jerrys Kids. The Special Olympics. A blind person with a bundle of pencils in one hand and a tin cup in the other. An old woman being helped across the street by a Boy Scout. The poster child, struggling bravely to walk. The meager, embittered life of the wheelchair-bound. For most Americans, these are the familiar, comfortable images of the disabled: benign, helpless, even heroic, struggling against all odds and grateful for the kindness of strangers. Yet no set of images could be more repellent to people with disabilities. In No Pity: People with Disabilities Forging a New Civil Rights Movement, Joe Shapiro of U.S. News & World Report tells of a political awakening few nondisabled Americans have even imagined. There are over 43 million disabled people in this country alone; for decades most of them have been thought incapable of working, caring for themselves, or contributing to society. But during the last twenty-live years, they, along with their parents and families, have begun to recognize that
The fight to end legalized abortion here in the United States is indeed the great civil rights movement of our time, and it has many parallels with the battles against the evils of slavery and segregation that plagued our nation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, respectively. Both were grave violations of the natural law and human dignity that remained a legal part of our society for many years. Both threatened the unity of our nation. Both stubbornly resisted numerous attempts to eradicate them even as public pressure against them continued to build over time. And both were finally defeated by church-based mass movements of millions of like-minded Americans of different denominations who prayed and took action under the unifying leadership of a respected advocate for their cause. For the abolition of slavery, that great leader was Abraham Lincoln; for de-segregation, it was the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The only weakness with the current pro-life movement is the lack of a ...

Its time to set the record straight on what the civil rights movement was really about versus what progressives and radicals want you to think it was about. It was about human rights. But let me show you how the movement has been perverted and distorted. Youve got folks like the Rev. Al Sharpton telling everyone that Martin Luther Kings dream was really about redistributing wealth: (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) REV. AL SHARPTON: Someone was saying to me the other day, Reverend Sharpton, weve got an African-American president. Weve achieved the dream of Dr. King. And I told him, that was not Dr. Kings dream. Hes a great man. Ive been working with the president and supported the president. But the dream was not to put one black family in the White House. The dream was to make everything equal in everybodys house. (END VIDEO CLIP) Youve got the NAACP telling everyone that King was a socialist and that we wouldnt be celebrating Martin Luther King Day if we really knew who he was. Listen closely to ...

When Henry Hampton marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965, he witnessed a violent clash between police and marchers that became known as Bloody Sunday. That moment inspired Hampton to create the 1987 documentary television series Eyes on the Prize, widely considered to be the quintessential film account of the civil rights movement. Series producer Jon Else says Hampton was determined to put the ordinary, Southern black folks into the forefront of their own story. In his new book

While today we mourn the loss of one of historys most valuable freedom fighters, Nelson Mandelas legacy as a universal symbol of hope, justice and courage will inspire generations to come.. As a direct benefactor of the Civil Rights Movement in my home state of Alabama, I reflect upon the tremendous contributions Nelson Mandela has made to civil rights movements across the world. The lessons which came from Americas civil rights movement and those from Mandelas fight to end apartheid in South Africa are inextricably linked.. Nelson Mandelas legacy is one that reflects a courageous struggle for freedom that not only changed South Africa, but the entire world. As we mourn the loss of this remarkable man, we must honor his legacy by never taking for granted the benefits that come from the freedom he and so many others fought for.. ...
Mom and I crabbed all the way home. Actually, I crabbed, and then she crabbed about me crabbing. It was kind of funny. But soome of it had nothing at all to do with her, I was on a tangent about homophobia in reggae music and she seemed to think I was confronting her, although to my knowledge shes not into reggae. Oh no! It was about if I got married somewhere far away, like in Jamaica, and then I said something about homophobia in Jamaican music and thinking probably same sex marriage isnt legal there. But what I was really thinking about it the evolution of the c/s/x civil rights movement as compared to other civil rights movement, and noticing that were stepping out of the phase most fledgling civil rights movements go through. As in, when various POC groups started working towards rights, there was this attempt to be less threatening to the ruling class by appealing to them based on a principle of sameness. You know, the old line The only difference is the colour of our skins. Its ...

Today, thousands of volunteers across the country will honor the life of Civil Rights legend Martin Luther King Jr. when they roll up their sleeves for a variety of service projects.. In the Delaware Valley, some of those efforts will unfold in places where King spent formative years.. Before becoming the face of the Civil Rights Era, King was a student at Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland, Pa, near Chester.. While studying there in the late 1940s, King became close friends with Rev. J. Pius Barbour, who led nearby Calvary Baptist Church in Chester and had also been a friend of Kings father.. Week after week, the pair and other preachers would regularly discuss scripture, but also various issues facing the community and the nation.. Dr. Rev. Bayard Taylor, who heads Calvary Baptist these days, said those gatherings and Kings relationship with Barbour laid the groundwork for his leadership down the line.. Thats when the social consciousness of the Civil Rights Movement began, said ...
In the postwar years, African Americans in Kentucky pressed for civil rights, as they believed they had earned them with their service during World War II and many other contributions, in addition to rights being provided by the US Constitution. During the 1960s, as a result of successful local sit-ins during the Civil Rights Movement, the Woolworths Store in Lexington ended practices of segregation at its lunch counter and in restrooms.[112] This was part of an era of activist efforts to achieve equal access to public facilities. Democratic Governor Edward Thompson Ned Breathitt, Jr., took pride in his civil rights leadership after being elected as governor in 1963. In Kentuckys 1963 gubernatorial campaign between Republican Louis Broady Nunn and Democrat Ned Breathitt, the subject of civil rights and racial integration was a major campaign issue. During the campaign, Nunn attacked the Fair Services Executive Order signed by Bertram Thomas Combs (and three other governors, after ...

A man dying of AIDS at the Gift of Peace Hospice, administered by the Missionaries of Charity in Cardinal Donald Wuerls Archdiocese of Washington, asked for baptism. When the priest asked for an expression of faith, the dying man whispered, All I know is that Im unhappy, and these sisters are very happy, even when I curse them and spit on them. Yesterday I finally asked them why they were so happy. They replied Jesus. I want this Jesus so I can finally be happy ...

Civil rights lawyers defend the civil rights and fundamental liberties of the public. A typical civil rights case might involve defending an individual who faces discrimination based on race, age, gender or religion. Cases related to alleged improper conduct by law enforcement also fall under the umbrella of civil rights law.. Civil rights cases sometimes involve claims based on false arrests, excessive force or brutality, and unlawful searches and seizures. Many cases are concerned with questions of human rights, social freedom and equality. Lawyers who specialize in this field are often passionate about obtaining justice for a particular group of people or a specific issue. For this reason, many civil rights lawyers specialize in a particular area of civil rights.. Lawyers who take on civil rights cases typically earn less than lawyers who choose careers in business fields, such as corporate law. The average starting salary for a civil rights lawyer is approximately $45,000 a year, but very ...

With the gruesome discovery of the bodies of First Nations children on the grounds of residential schools in Canada, people are also turning their attention to American Indian schools in the United States. These boarding schools operated in the late 1800s and 1900s. They were dedicated to the forced acculturation of Native American children, who were often taken from their homes and made to attend. Mesa County had its own American Indian School. The schools records were destroyed in a fire in Leavenworth, Kansas, making it difficult to piece together the history of the institute. Thankfully, local history professor Don Mackendrick did just that. This blog follows much of his lecture on the same topic.. The Teller Indian School (later called the Teller Institute, located at 2800 Riverside Parkway) was named after U.S. Senator Henry Teller of Colorado, who was instrumental in passing legislation for the creation of the school in 1886. The first students arrived in 1887. The school followed the ...

After 1922 the Irish Republican Army continued struggling to gain control of Ulster and create a united Ireland. Eamon de Valera clamped down on IRA activity in Southern Ireland and activism moved to mainland Britain. In the 1960s religious discrimination against Catholics in the north spurred a civil rights movement and republican terrorism. The Campaign for Social Justice and Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association were formed. In 1968 violent clashes between Protestant and Catholic communities caused no-go areas to be set up. In 1970 internal disputes in the IRA caused a split between the officials and the radical provisionals. British troops arrived in Ireland in 1969 as peacekeepers. In 1971 internment without trial was introduced, in 1972 10,000 peopled rallied in protest, the government in Stormont ruled the protest illegal and 13 civilians were shot dead by the British soldiers on Bloody Sunday. Operation Motorman cleared sectarian no-go areas in Belfast and Londonderry and in 1973 power

Woodson proclaims in her authors note, Thats what this book is-my past, my people, my memories, my story. In effect, her life is something of an odyssey of dreams. Born in Ohio in 1963, during the civil rights movement (America then a country caught// between Black and White), she was raised by her mothers people in South Carolina and later moved with her mother and siblings to Brooklyn, New York. She tells movingly of feeling strangely halfway home in each place. The midwest, the rural south and the urban east coast all presented vastly different contexts of experience and meaning. Her poems variously reflect on living with the remnants of the Jim Crow south, her growing awareness of the civil rights and womens movements, her immediate and extended family, the impact of days filled with being a Jehovahs Witness, the everyday realities of Brooklyn community life, and ultimately the search to find her place in the world. Its largely about the experience everyone undergoes of growing ...
African American women have played significant roles in the ongoing straggle for freedom and equality, but relatively little is known about many of these leaders and activists. Most accounts of civil rights activism focus on male leaders and the organizations they led, leaving a dearth of information about the countless black women who were the backbone of the struggle in communities across the country. At the local level women helped mold and shape the direction the movement would take. Lulu B. White was one of those women leaders in the civil rights movement in Texas.Executive secretary of the Houston branch of the NAACP and state director of branches, White was a significant force in the struggle against Jim Crow during the 1940s and 1950s. She was at the helm of the Houston chapter when the Supreme Court struck down the white primary in Smith v. Allwright, and she led the fight to get more blacks elected to public office, to gain economic parity for African Americans, and to integrate the University
The HistoryMakers represents the single largest archival project of its kind in the world, outdistancing the existing video oral history collections of New Yorks Schomburg Library and the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum. The HistoryMakers is unique among these other collections of African American heritage, because of its massive scope. Like other oral history collections, The HistoryMakers collection hearkens back to the earliest and most authentic efforts to capture the voice of a people, while introducing state-of-the-art technology and increased accessibility. The HistoryMakers wants to provide living proof that African American history did not begin or end with the civil rights movement, that the HistoryMakers number in the thousands and that their names are not just Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ella Fitzgerald. The initial goal of The HistoryMakers is to complete 5,000 interviews of both well-known and unsung African American HistoryMakers within the next five ...

Nineteen sixty-four was a watershed year in the American civil rights movement. Fifty years on we decided to take a journey through the soul of the South, to see and experience the region where much of that bloody freedom fight took place. Our week-long trip would take us from cosmopolitan New Orleans, through the great length of Mississippi, to Memphis, considered by some the most southern city on earth. We had recently seen Bryan Cranstons masterful performance as LBJ in that fateful year, in Broadways All the Way, and knew the high-stakes involved with the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts hanging in the balance. And, simultaneously, a tortured Mississippi burned. We were intrigued to see how the South, and the nation, faced its past. We landed at New Orleans appropriately named Louis Armstrong International Airport on a bright, sunny mid-February afternoon. Appropriately, because, more than anything else, the Big Easy oozes music in all varieties but none is more dynamically ...
Talk Radio Observes Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Although an official federal holiday, most talk radio personnel are working today and many are honoring or simply acknowledging the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his work leading the civil rights movement of the 1960s. For example, the first hour of iHeartMedia superstar Sean Hannitys national radio show is devoted to talking about the historic civil rights leaders legacy and relevance to todays headlines. Given the racial tensions brought about by recent high-profile cases involving fatal confrontations between police and African American men, this years observance of Dr. Kings birthday is even more relevant than in recent years. Sirius XM Satellite Radio Urban View host Karen Hunter says, Every day I honor the legacy of Dr. King on my show. So every day we do something special to honor him. Today I will be playing snippets from a speech he gave at UCLA in 1965. I will also be talking about Selma. And I have already spoken to ...
Susan Klopfer and her husband once lived on the grounds of Mississippis Parchman Penitentiary where Fred was the states chief of private prison psychologists. While there, Susan roamed the Delta, visiting older people in small cotton hamlets whod lived through the modern civil rights movement (1955 to 1968). She became intrigued with this era, after learning new stories surrounding the murders of Emmett Till, Medgar Evers, Cleve McDowell, Birdia Keglar, Adlena Hamlett and others who were all key participants to bringing change in those turbulent years. Susan later wrote The Emmett Till Book, Who Killed Emmett Till, and Where Rebels Roost: Mississippi Civil Rights Revisited (all nonfiction) before writing The Plan, her first foray into fiction. She describes her latest work as paranormal, historical, alternative fiction.. Susan has worked as a journalist on daily newspapers in Texas, Missouri and Nevada, and as an acquisitions and development editor for Prentice Hall Computer Books. She won ...
Way back in the day, the Democrats held the Solid South, mainly as a reaction to the fact that the Republicans were in power when the Union trashed the unholy living fuck out of the Confederacy, and served them damned right, too. That all changed when the civil rights movement started up in the Fifties, and Southern Democratic anger hit a rolling boil when the 1965 Civil Rights Act was signed into law by a Democrat ...
By Lester Asamoah 2016, in some ways, has been a rough year in America. Racial tensions seem to be at least as high they were in 1992 after the Los Angeles riots. Some older civil rights activists even claim that tensions are close to as bad as they were during the civil rights movement. Raceā€¦
We believe the Bible is God’s Word in its truth and purity. Each member reaches out to un-churched friends, relatives, and neighbors and invites them to hear the Gospel message (John 3:16) proclaimed at Trinity.   We support our congregation through the first-fruits of our time, talents, and treasures. Recognizing God’s generous blessing in our lives (Psalm 24:1), we passionately share His blessings inside and outside the congregation.   We provide a complete Christian ministry from cradle to grave, supporting specific groups (i.e. children, teens, singles, couples, families, seniors) and the congregation as a whole. Our ministry is centered upon the Word and sacraments through worship, education, Bible study, spiritual support, fellowship, and service opportunities.   We utilize Trinity Lutheran School to assist parents and guardians in fulfilling our God-given responsibility to prepare our children for heaven and a God-pleasing life on earth
cp: I never claimed to be liberal, so the accusation illiberal doesnt bother me. Nor am I such a fool as to think that any noun you care to plug into a sentence will do equally well. Thats kind of a Mad Lib approach, and we all know how funny Mad Libs can be. A Catholic Moment has no place in the United States of America because it would be an Establishment of Religion, inevitably, inescapably, fundamentally, by definition. (You do understand the difference between moment and movement dont you?) Anyway, a labor movement, a suffrage movement, a civil rights movement, are NOT an Establishment of Religion.. Those who do not govern themselves by the laws of God will be ruled by tyrants. Well, well, that is PROOF POSITIVE that the Roman Catholic Church does not govern itself by the laws of God. Because its government always results in tyranny. Ask all those molested young men in Ireland, and the damnable bishops who aided and abetted it.. It is worth mentioning that the Catholic truth ...
