To our knowledge, this is the first study describing pediatric mental health hospitalizations in a nationally representative sample from all hospitals admitting children and in the regionalized system of free-standing childrens hospitals. We found that mental health hospitalizations are common and costly nationally, with nearly 1 in 10 pediatric admissions having a primary diagnosis of a mental health condition. This finding exceeds national estimates of hospitalizations for asthma (7.1% for 1- to 17-year-olds).23 Aggregate charges for depression alone ($1.33 billion) are comparable to the $1.50 billion in aggregate charges for asthma in 2009.23. Our findings of a substantially lower proportion of mental health hospitalizations in free-standing childrens hospitals (3.3%) compared with hospitals admitting children nationally (9.6%) indicate that general hospitals deliver more inpatient psychiatric services than free-standing childrens hospitals. This difference in mental health care delivery ...

Assessment of Mothers Knowledge upon their Children with Enzyme Deficiency (G6PD) in Pediatric Teaching Hospital at AL-Hilla City/Iraq
A child born with trisomy 13 or 18 presents challenges to families and pediatric health care professionals starting at birth, including difficult ethical issues. Since these children often have congenital heart disease as a result of their trisomy, the question raised is whether or not to do surgery given the epidemiology showing significant neurologic impairment and short lifespan for children with these disorders. Kosiv et al. (10.1542/peds.2017-0772) decided to look further into this issue by looking at national data over a decade from the Pediatric Health Information System database to study infants born with trisomy 13 or 18 with congenital heart disease and then follow their readmissions to determine in-hospital mortality and length of stay for admissions and readmissions for those with and without congenital heart disease and for those with heart disease whether or not they received surgery. The authors studied over a thousand infants with trisomy 18 and more than 600 with trisomy 13 the ...

The time from a referral for suspected lung cancer is received at a hospital until treatment start has been defined as a quality indicator. Current Norwegian recommendation is that ≥70% should start surgery or radiotherapy within 42 calendar days and systemic therapy within 35 days. However, delays can occur due to medical complexity. The aim of this study was to quantify the proportion of patients who started treatment within the recommended timeframes; and to assess the proportion of non-complex patients for which there were no good reasons for delays. We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients diagnosed with lung cancer at a university hospital during 2011-2013. We defined

Valley Childrens Healthcares multidisciplinary approach creates a dynamic team of pediatric surgeons, both general and specialty-based, working together to generate optimal outcomes. These include complex plastic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, orthopaedics and urology.. Our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques whenever medically appropriate. For families wishing to avoid the use of donor blood during procedures, we are the only free-standing childrens hospital in the western US with a bloodless program. Our Center for Bloodless Medicine focuses on minimizing a patients blood loss before, during, and after treatment and minimizing the need for blood transfusions. Over 360 children, with more than 1,000 visits, are treated annually in the bloodless program.. Often, our surgical patients experience shorter lengths of stay (LOS) than at other hospitals. For instance, our LOS for plastic/reconstructive surgery, hernia and ENT surgery is a full day shorter ...

Evidence from this review suggests that hospitalizations can be reduced in CMC. Because these children account for as much as one-third of child health expenditures,8,10 and because hospital care may account for 80% of spending in this group,9 these findings are important. Progress in this field has the potential to lead to significant cost savings, higher care quality, and improved patient experience in a particularly vulnerable cohort. These findings lay the foundation for additional research by identifying candidate drivers, or root causes, of potentially preventable hospitalizations upon which interventions can be designed and tested.. Both home and immediate postdischarge environments appear to be high-yield focal points given their relationship to detrimental factors including adherence problems, inadequate technology use and maintenance, family stress, passive smoke and other environmental exposures, and insufficient follow-up or information transfer. Research with chronically ill adults ...

Selecting qualified professionals with the dedication and compassion required to perform pediatric patient care requires a sophisticated approach. As a result, I was recently challenged to examine recruitment from a new perspective: Though I have served as a human resource executive for more than 25 years, I recently explored for the first time the opportunity to include external stakeholders in recruitment. As human resource professionals and leaders, we are keen to consider how each candidate will affect our organizations operation and leadership, but do we ever consider the opinions of our customers? Do we involve our customers in selecting key employees? At Nemours Childrens Hospital, we now involve the parents of our patients in many candidate interviews. Following its October opening in Orlando, Fla., this is the second pediatric hospital in a network of two hospitals and 19 pediatric specialty clinics and primary care sites operated by the Nemours Foundation of Jacksonville, Fla. The New England Patriots held a blood drive sponsored by Bobs Furniture at Gillette Stadium at the beginning of December. It was right after I became eligible to donate blood again so I went to give up some blood. I have to say that they did things right. Right before the exit, former Patriot Joe Andruzzi was set up at a table signing autographs. Andruzzi played with the Patriots for five years and was a member of all three Super Bowl Championship teams. More impressive than that, Joe kicked the ass of non-Hodgkins Burkitts lymphoma.. I have been stressed about time. When will Jacobs case be presented at Childrens Hospital Boston? When will he be scheduled for surgery? How long will his recovery and rehabilitation take? How old will he be when this actually happens? And then I was thinking that maybe this is all for the best because the neurosurgeon discussed the honeymoon period where a drug seems to work and then gradually becomes ineffective. Jacob has done well since he was switched to Depakote a few months ago. But it took several increases in his dosage and now he is taking 7 ml twice a day. The maximum for his weight is 8 ml twice a day so we still have some room to adjust if necessary.... I have been seeing some strange eye movements again. Some rolling, some shifting. I am feeling like Ive been here before because I have. And the last time it took over a month before we confirmed that he was having seizures again which led to the recommendation for neurosurgery. Five other international sites will also participate. The new study is sponsored by investigators at Childrens Hospital Boston. Scientists plan to enroll 20 boys with SCID-X1. Scientists will try to correct the defective or non-functioning gene in SCID by delivering a "vector," a virus genetically altered to contain human DNA. In theory, the normal gene with the vector will begin producing a protein that has been missing or not working. Thus, curing the disease ...

Jenna started throwing up again, fever back up to 103 again, so I packed her off to the ER at Childrens Hospital. More on that tomorrow. What a rediculous place. Im too tired to tell. Anyway, she has a roaring ear infection on top of strep, and the Omnicef has yet to get on top of it all. They gave her a shot of Rocefin (shes allergic to penicillin, so this is a ceflasporin derivative) to try to get us through tomorrow (it lasts 24 hrs). A shot in each leg. My poor baby. We are home. Think healing. Happy mothers day. All I want is for Jenna to be better. And also three solid hours sleep. Thats all ...

Stultz JS, Porter K, Nahata MC. J Am Med Inform Assoc 2014 Feb;. PMID: 24496386. OBJECTIVES: To determine the sensitivity and specificity of a dosing alert system for dosing errors and to compare the sensitivity of a proprietary system with and without institutional customization at a pediatric hospital.. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of medication orders, orders causing dosing alerts, reported adverse drug events, and dosing errors during July, 2011 was conducted. Dosing errors with and without alerts were identified and the sensitivity of the system with and without customization was compared.. RESULTS: There were 47 181 inpatient pediatric orders during the studied period; 257 dosing errors were identified (0.54%). The sensitivity of the system for identifying dosing errors was 54.1% (95% CI 47.8% to 60.3%) if customization had not occurred and increased to 60.3% (CI 54.0% to 66.3%) with customization (p=0.02). The sensitivity of the system for underdoses was 49.6% without customization ...
