The concentrations of total glycerol, unesterified glycerol, and glycerol deriving from triglycerides (triacylglycerols) were measured in 468 fresh human sera from unselected outpatients of a municipal hospital. The distribution mode of free glycerol was log-normal; that of triglycerides was neither normal nor log-normal. A weak but statistically approved correlation between these variables was demonstrated. A comparison of triglyceride concentrations corrected for unesterified glycerol with those based on total glycerol shows that, for the triglycerides determination, analysis for total glycerol and substraction of 0.11 mmol/liter from the resulting value appears to be justified in clinical routine. Recently, it has been shown that Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is common in type 1 diabetes (2) and that the use of a standard antibiotic therapy obtains a significantly lower eradication rate than in non-insulin-dependent diabetic subjects (3,4). Our aim was to assess the incidence of H. pylori re-infection after a successful therapy in type 1 diabetic patients. A total of 74 subjects previously infected by H. pylori were enrolled, including 34 type 1 diabetic subjects (16 women and 18 men, 42 ± 9 years of age) and 40 nondiabetic control subjects (17 women and 23 men, 44 ± 8 years of age). Thirty-one cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) occurred after exposure in the emergency room at the National Taiwan University Hospital. The index patient was linked to an outbreak at a nearby municipal hospital. Three clusters were identified over a 3-week period. The first cluster (5 patients) and the second cluster (14 patients) occurred among patients, family members, and nursing aids. The third cluster (12 patients) occurred exclusively among healthcare workers. Six healthcare workers had close contact with SARS patients. Six others, with different working patterns, indicated that they did not have contact with a SARS patient. Environmental surveys found 9 of 119 samples of inanimate objects to be positive for SARS coronavirus RNA. Objective: To report the prevalence, anatomic and clinical characteristics of cryptorchidism in schools in the city of Conakry. Material and Methods: We carried out a 6-month cross-sectional study which took place in 32 public and private general education establishments in the city of Conakry. Each student boy was interviewed and examined; some information was collected from parents over the phone. Results: The prevalence of cryptorchidism was 3.6%. It was higher among children of mothers who were not in school, and among those who attended public institutions. The average age of students with cryptorchidism was 9.84 ± 2.33 years, with extremes of 4 and 17 years. 85% of these pupils were born in a care structure (CHU, municipal hospital, health center). Cryptorchidism sat on the right in 64 cases (37.4%), on the left in 44 cases (25.7%), it was bilateral in 63 cases (36.9%). Faecal microbial transplantation (FMT) is currently the most effective treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). However, up to 20% of patients experience further recurrences after single FMT. The mechanisms that lead to FMT failure and its risk factors are poorly understood. Comorbidity is one of the risk factors of the failure of standard antibiotic therapy of recurrent CDI. It is not known if comorbidity is also associated with the risk of FMT failure. We conducted a prospective observational cohort study in order to elucidate if comorbid status is associated with FMT failure. Patients with microbiologically proven recurrent CDI were recruited and underwent FMT via retention enema. Patients were followed up for 12 weeks after FMT for signs and symptoms of CDI recurrence.
