Tests of the placenta came back weeks later to show neither my baby or I had had an infection. Obviously, no one knew we were OK at the time. I probably would have done the same exact thing, except hopefully, been more aware of water breaking and also delaying my epidural because the anesthesia supposedly slows down labor, though no doctor would confirm that for me. The cost of the c-section and 4 day hospital stay it requires, covered by my insurance, was $50,000. The point being hospitals make more money and avoid more lawsuits when they preform c-sections.. After one c-section, at my practice/ hospital, youre allowed to schedule another for the second pregnancy, but I chose to try a VBAC because the recovery from the operation had been so hard. I waited much longer for the epidural. It was a long labor, but an easy birth. I pushed for just twenty minutes. Within hours, I was sitting "criss cross applesauce" as my daughter would say now. I felt happy and energized. The next day while my baby ...

To establish the feasibility and to estimate the benefit of group visits for individuals with PD and their caregivers. The feasibility will be assessed by the ability to enroll and retain (measured by number of individuals who complete the 12-month study and at least half the study visits) ~40 individuals in the pilot trial. The responsiveness of the following different outcomes to group visits will be assessed during the pilot trial: quality of life, patient satisfaction, depression, caregiver burden, resource utilization, and disease progression. The primary outcome measure for efficacy will be a comparison of the change in the Parkinsons Disease Questionnaire-39 from baseline to 12 months in the control (routine care) and intervention (group visit) groups ...

Interestingly enough, the news that I got at Mayo that upset me the most wasnt directly to do with my cancer. About a year and a half ago I had a medi-port put in so that I could receive chemo without having to go through the trauma of getting an IV every time. My port is a PowerPort and can be used also for scan contrast. Well, this trip to Mayo I was informed that I would not be able to use my port for my scan contrast and would need an IV. Trauma! IVs and me do not work well together, thus the port, but the tech who was getting me preped for my scan looked at an older scan (something I guess they are supposed to do) and saw that the tip of my port, the part that is supposed to sit in a big vein just outside the heart, was in the wrong place. After talking to my doctor and having him look at my scans, it turns out that the tip of my port is, indeed, in a bad place. Instead of sitting just outside my heart, the tip of my port had worked its way inside of the atrium of my heart. My doctor said ...

As part of an ongoing study, Dr. Laack and a team of Mayo Clinic researchers identified 127 consecutive pediatric patients with World Health Organization Grade I and Grade II low-grade gliomas treated at Mayo Clinic between 1990 and 2005. Of those, 90 patients had complete removal of their tumor and 20 patients had subtotal resections with added radiation therapy. Results showed that greater than 89 percent of the patients are surviving more than 10 years later. When combined with results from a previous Mayo Clinic study, this is the largest group of patients reported and was conducted through long-term follow-up by the Mayo Clinic team. "This is great news for families because it shows that even if a complete surgery isnt possible, adding radiation to a less than complete surgery reduces their chances of tumor progression to yield the same outcome as if there was a complete removal," says Dr. Laack.. ...
