TY - JOUR. T1 - Chemoradiotherapy for poor-risk stage III non-small cell lung cancer.. AU - Lau, Derick H. AU - Ryu, J. K.. AU - Gandara, David R. PY - 1997/8. Y1 - 1997/8. N2 - Cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy is becoming a standard treatment for patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, a significant proportion of patients with lung cancer also present with co-morbid conditions that indicate a poor prognosis and poor tolerance of treatment. We have completed a phase I/II study to evaluate the tolerability and efficacy of carboplatin-based chemoradiotherapy for patients with poor-risk stage III NSCLC. Twenty-four patients with stage IIIA/B NSCLC and concurrent medical conditions rendering them ineligible for cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy protocols were treated with thoracic irradiation, 1.8 to 2 Gy daily to the primary tumor and regional lymph nodes, for a total dose of 61 Gy. Concurrently, patients received carboplatin 200 mg/m2/d intravenously on days 1, 3, 29, ...

Aim: To measure noise levels in a pediatric intensive care customer unit and discuss the consequences of such noise in relation to professional actions. Method: This is an observational and correlational study, performed in the pediatric intensive care unit of a federal hospital in Rio de Janeiro. We measured the noise level by decibel DEC-460 for five non-consecutive days and nights at five different hours. After a descriptive analysis of data, we performed a study of linear regression. Results: We identified an average of 62.64 dBA, with a standard deviation of 6.893 dBA and peak of 82.5 dBA during the daytime. The linear regression found that 44% of the variability of the noise is explained by the covariables. Discussion: The noise levels identified exceed recommendations of national and international organizations. We identified the professional actions and interactions as the main sources of noise. Conclusion: There is an urgent need to rethink this environment and establish educational ...
Among 12,641 patients, 7921 (62.7 percent) received no therapy. Black race and living in a lower-educated census-tract were linked with a 23 percent and 20 percent increased likelihood of not receiving care, respectively, while treatment at an academic center was associated with a 20 percent increased likelihood of receiving cancer-directed therapy. Patients who received no treatment or only radiation were more likely to die during the years analyzed than those receiving concurrent chemotherapy and radiation, the standard of care for stage III non-small cell lung cancer ...

This study will examine the effectiveness of a drug called Tarceva (erlotinib) giving prior to surgery in lung cancer patients. To be eligible for the study patients must have stage III Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer with EGFR mutation. Eligible patients will take Tarceva® (erlotinib) at a dose of 150 mg daily for approximately two months. After 2 months of erlotinib treatment, patients will have a PET/CT scan to determine whether they are responding to the treatment (i.e. whether or not the tumor shrunk or remains stable) or not. After the treatment patients will then be evaluated by a surgeon for surgical removal of the remaining tumor. Treatment after the surgery will be determined by the treating physician and it will be influenced by the response to treatment with Tarceva (erlotinib). A total of 55 patients with will take part in this multi-institution study.

Several volumetric studies have been conducted to evaluate initial GTV as a prognostic factor in patients with NSCLC who underwent definitive RT [6]-[12]. However, the prognostic role of residual tumor volume or tumor response after treatment was assessed only in trials of induction therapy for NSCLC [8],[17],[18], not definitive CCRT. To our knowledge, the present study is the first to evaluate the prognostic role of volumetric parameters and include GTVpre, GTVpost, and VRR in patients with NSCLC who underwent definitive CCRT.. In our study, GTVpre was an independent prognostic factor of survival in patients with CCRT for locally advanced NSCLC, which is consistent with previous reports. In a secondary analysis of the RTOG 93-11 phase I-II radiation dose-escalation study by Werner-Wasik et al. [7], patients with larger GTV, defined as the sum of the volumes of the primary tumor and involved lymph nodes, had a shorter median survival time and PFS than patients with smaller GTV. Basaki et al. ...

Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) is a measurement of the communication quality of wireless channels. CQI can be a value (or values) representing a measure of channel quality for a given channel. Typically, a high value CQI is indicative of a channel with high quality and vice versa. A CQI for a channel can be computed by making use of performance metric, such as a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR), signal-to-noise plus distortion ratio (SNDR), and so forth of the channel. These values and others can be measured for a given channel and then used to compute a CQI for the channel. The CQI for a given channel can be dependent upon the transmission (modulation) scheme used by the communications system. For example, a communications system using code-division multiple access (CDMA) can make use of a different CQI than a communications system that makes use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In more complex communications systems, such as ...

The currently used mechanisms for spectrum management are a contributing factor to the long lead times from innovation to market in wireless technologies andsystems. This has in turn been a major contributing factor to the dominance of the large telecom companies in the European and World markets, whereas very few innovative enterprises have exhibited consistent growth, although the technicalcompetence in Sweden is very high in this area. Alternative spectrum management regimes, such as the introduction of "unlicensed bands" have proven very effective in lowering entry thresholds for smaller companies (e.g the WLAN business). In addition, experts claim that the spectrum requirements for communication purposes will increase by as much as 200-300 % up to 2010. At the same time the actual usage of the electromagnetic spectrum is very inefficient.. The project aims at studying new more, flexible, spectrum allocation regimeswhich, in combination with new technologies, such as multi-radio access, ...
