Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of lower respiratory tract infection in young children in both the community and hospital setting. The clinical presentation, patient and phylogenetic characteristicsof laboratory-confirmed cases of RSV, as well as risk factors for nosocomial infectionat Red Cross War Memorial Childrens Hospital in Cape Town were analysed. A multiplex PCR assay that detects 7 respiratory viruses was used to identify RSV nucleic acid on respiratory specimens. A total of 226 children were studied, ages ranging between 1 week and 92.5 months (median: 2.8 months, IQR: 1.3-6.3 months) and 51.8 % were males. The median duration of symptoms prior to diagnosis was 2 days (IQR: 1-4 days). Nosocomial infections wereidentified in 22 (9.7 %) children. There were pre-existing medical conditions in 113 (50.0 %) excluding HIV, most commonly prematurity (n = 58, 50.0 %) and congenital heart disease (n = 34, 29.3 %). The commonest presenting symptoms were cough (196, 86.7 %),

Background: Childhood tuberculous meningitis (TBM) has poor outcomes. These are often associated with delayed diagnosis because early diagnosis and treatment is challenging. Existing diagnostic criteria use CSF characteristics to suspect TBM. However, lumbar and ventricular CSF may differ. These differences have not been well characterised Sometimes only ventricular CSF is available and decisions about surgical treatment may be influenced by CSF characteristics. This study examined CSF parameters from lumbar and ventricular compartments in patients with TBM and hydrocephalus who required neurosurgical procedures, their CSF temporal profiles, differentials between compartments, and factors that may influence these results. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted including data from two prospective TBM studies. Children treated for TBM and hydrocephalus at Red Cross War Memorial Childrens Hospital with lumbar and/ or ventricular samples were selected. Pooled lumbar verses ...

This study is a prospective, single arm, observational study of patients at Red Cross War Memorial Childrens Hospital receiving treatment for laryngotracheal stenosis using a modified tracheal dilatation balloon. The tracheal balloon dilatation procedure is clinically well-established and is standard practice in the study institution. In this study, a modified, improved tracheal balloon will be used to treat patients. Data to be collected during the procedure include measurement of the stenotic segment prior to and after dilatation, using both the modified Myer-Cotton grading system and sizing the stenosis using endotracheal tubes diameter, documenting the site of the stenosis (distance from vocal cords), periprocedural oxygen saturation nadir (using plethysmography) and heart rate. All other procedures will be as per routine care. Each procedure will be monitored by a senior anaesthetist who is not a member of the research team. Their role will be to ensure the safety of the patient.. The ...
Introduction Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are a major birth anomaly worldwide. South Africa has ethnically and geologically diverse populations. A recent publication indicated an increased birth prevalence of ARMs in the Witwatersrand referral area between 2005 and 2010. Methods For an 8-year period from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2012; retrospective data were collected from the Pediatric Surgical Departments of Red Cross War Memorial Childrens Hospital, Tygerberg Childrens Hospital, as well as the private sector health registries ...
0:10Skip to 0 minutes and 10 secondsWelcome. My name is Marc Hendricks, and Im a paediatric oncologist working at the Red Cross War Memorial Childrens Hospital in Capetown, South Africa. Im also a musician and a songwriter. In this segment, were going to focus on the intersections between music and healing and look at key concepts in the caring for children with cancer in middle income settings. The relationship between the arts, in particular music, and medicine is well documented in the medical literature and dates back to the time of William Shakespeare. This has traced a path through history and has touched on almost every medical discipline including neurology, nephrology, and emergency medicine.. 0:51Skip to 0 minutes and 51 secondsAnd so its hardly surprising that caring for children requires doctors to navigate the space between art and science. Doctors really become shape shifters, a lot like Proteus, the Greek god of transformation. There really is often more art to medicine than ...

Non-therapeutic, non-religious circumcision is the surgical procedure most commonly published about,1 but substantive indications are lacking. Since its introduction to the USA during the Victorian period, when it was thought that it prevented masturbation,2 medical justifications for the procedure progressed to prevention of various infective conditions (sexually transmitted diseases, penile and cervical cancer) and controlling of the sexual drive. Recent Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS/World Health Organization (UNAIDS/WHO) policy proposes male circumcision for the prevention of HIV/AIDS.3,4. HIV and tuberculosis are a major public health problem in children. Challenges to treat children with tuberculosis include a lack of knowledge about optimal dosing of first line antituberculosis drugs across ages, nutritional status and HIV infection status, the absence of an appropriate regimen to co-administer rifampin and lopinavir/ritonavir, the key first line drugs for tuberculosis and HIV, and uncertainty about NVP exposure in young children during rifampin-based tuberculosis therapy.. In total, 240 children , 12 years of age with tuberculosis will be enrolled at Red Cross Childrens Hospital in Cape Town and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre. In the second month of antituberculosis treatment, one dose of the drugs in their first-line regimens will be administered according to 2010 WHO/IUATLD guidelines (study drugs) and blood will be sampled for pharmacokinetic analysis over the following 8-10 hours.. HOUSTON (Nov. 17, 2009) - While the thought of using a nasal spray vaccine containing a live, but weakened, virus to fight the H1N1 flu may seem odd, the Harris County Hospital District encourages people to consider this safe and effective option to fight the flu. People who dismiss the nasal spray in favor of an injectable vaccine could be needlessly putting their health at risk. Federal and state suppliers are making nasal spray and injectable forms of the vaccine available. "The nasal spray is not dangerous at all," said Charles Ericsson, MD, chair, Infection Control Committee, Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, part of the Harris County Hospital District. "It may be associated with a few minor symptoms like a runny nose, but it will still protect you against the H1N1 virus." Ericsson, also professor and clinical director, Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases for The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, recommends people worry less about which form to get and more ...

1979. The John Wesley County Hospital was closed and in its place a new facility was built. That facility was initially known as the John Wesley Comprehensive Health Center which provided outpatient services only. It was renamed and is now known as the H. Claude Hudson Comprehensive Health Center. At that time many of the county doctors initially involved with The Attending Staff Association of John Wesley County Hospital moved to other locations including Rancho Los Amigos Hospital and Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. The move also forced the Attending Staff Association of John Wesley County Hospital to split into two organizations, with Dr. Robert Peters forming the Liver Research and Education Foundation at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, Inc. Between the two corporations, monies were allocated based on where the doctor-in-charge was located.. Dr. Carol E. Henneman, Dr. Sidney E. Wechsler and Dr. Edward Lenoski were left with approximately $50,000 in assets and renamed The Attending Staff ...
The Illinois Medical District is one of the largest medical districts in the United States, and the largest in the state. John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County (formerly known as Cook County Hospital), one of the largest county-run hospitals in the U.S. and inspiration for the TV shows ER and The Fugitive, is located here. T[11]he District had its start in the 1870s when Cook County Hospital, Rush Medical College, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons were established on the Near West Side following the great Chicago fire of 1871. The cornerstone for the Medical Center was the building of Cook County Hospital in 1876. In 1877, Rush Medical College erected a building next to County at Harrison and Wood. Presbyterian Hospital (affiliated with Rush) was built in 1883. The University of Illinois at Chicagos origins in the District can be traced to the College of Physicians and Surgeons, founded in 1881. In 1917, the State acquired the vacated West Side Park located at Polk and Wolcott ...

A medical error has left a single mom from Brooklyn, New York, with less than one year to live. The ill-fated first visit took place at Kings County Hospital in New York.. Laverne Wilkinson began feeling chest pains when she visited Kings County Hospital. A doctor there told her to take an over-the-counter painkiller, but did not tell her that her chest X-ray revealed a suspicious nodule in her right lung, The New York Daily News said. The nodule, at that time, was two-centimeters. Two years later, Wilkinson has metastasized lung cancer and has been given under one year to live, said The News.. At Kings County Hospital, Laverne underwent an EKG and a chest X-ray and was sent home with a clean bill of health and orders to take Motrin for her pain. Treated by a first-year resident, Dr. James Willis, Wilkinson was told her tests were normal. In fact, Willis wrote on her chart, "You should take Motrin for pain, and follow up with your doctor," according to The News.. In his written report, the ...

Compliance to annual diabetic eye examination remains poor: 48-66% nationally and 18% in inner cities (1,2). To improve noncompliance to diabetic eye examination in an inner-city county hospital population with an undersupplied eye clinic, the Wishard-Eskenazi Teleretinal Diabetic Retinopathy Screening (WETDRS) program was implemented in June 2009. Four Topcon digital retinal cameras were purchased by the health system for screening of only patients lacking a documented eye clinic visit within the past year at four primary care clinics. Captured images were remotely interpreted by eye physicians and electronically reported back to primary care clinics. To determine the cost of teleretinal screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) through primary care, we conducted a retrospective review from program initiation through February 2013 (45-month time period). Institutional review board approval was obtained, and research adhered to tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki. Comparison was made between ...
