Antibiotic misuse can cause immense damage and lead to the emergence of new superbugs that might leave patients without drugs, says Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon.
North Dakota State University. Abstract In the early years of their use, antibiotics were seen as "miracle drugs." However, in the time since their discovery the miracle has faded into an evolutionary arms race between scientists and doctors developing new antibiotics and their bacteria foes. Much of the source of the problem lies with the improper use of antibiotics. Ignorance of antibiotic resistance is at least partially to blame for misuse. A random survey of 30 people was conducted to provide an assessment of the general publics knowledge of antibiotics and antibiotic misuse. The results of this study aid in increasing awareness of antibiotic misuse and resistance. Introduction After the discovery of penicillin in 1928, antibiotics became widely produced and distributed. Back then there wasnt a warning label attached saying, "if mishandled, will cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics." Unfortunately, misuse of these drugs has led to antibiotic resistance, rendering the drugs ...

The present study sought to assess the rational use of antimicrobial agents in a Brazilian intensive care unit (ICU) and its association with antimicrobial resistance in elderly patients admitted to the unit. Results: Choice of empiric and sensitivity-guided therapy was inadequate in > 80% and 59% of cases respectively. Inadequate antimicrobial therapy, whether empiric or sensitivity-guided, was positively correlated with bacterial resistance (r = 0.316; p = 0.001). Sensitivity testing revealed a 46.5% resistance rate to eight out of the ten most commonly used antibiotics. Multiple drug-resistant organisms were found in 40.8% of patients. A significant increase was observed in the number of multidrug-resistant samples between 2006/2007 and 2008 (r = 0.41, p = 0.006), (r = 0.598, p = 0.001), (r = 0.688, p = 0.00). Conclusion: We found a high rate of antibiotic misuse in the study sample. Inadequate therapy was correlated with resistance to antimicrobial agents.
A Manhattan federal court has ordered the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to study antibiotic use in animals, citing a decades-old proposal banning the use of some antibiotics in animal feed.. We routinely discuss the dangers of antibiotic misuse and overuse, and how these practices are directly linked to antibiotic resistant diseases that can wreak havoc on the body, as well as the links between treating farm animals with low antibiotic doses and wide-spread drug resistance. For instance, the historically massive 2011 recall-involving 36 million pounds of tainted ground turkey resulted in 111 reported salmonella illnesses, and one death. That outbreak involved a bacterium resistant to at least four antibiotics typically used in turkey production. Not surprising given that antibiotics are often given to food animals to quicken growth and compensate for unsanitary, overcrowded conditions.. The Washington Post said the federal court ordered the agency to follow through on a 35-year-old ...
A recent, massive recall, involving 36 million pounds of tainted ground turkey, 111 reported salmonella illnesses, and one death, is highlighting the link between animals and antibiotic resistance. That recall was one of the largest meat recalls in U.S. history.. The bacterium involved in this particular recall was resistant to at least four antibiotics typically used in turkey production, said the Sun Sentinel. The results are not surprising. Antibiotics are often given to food animals such as turkeys, chickens, cattle, and pigs to quicken their growth and to make up for unsanitary, overcrowded conditions.. We routinely discuss the dangers of antibiotic misuse and overuse and how these practices are directly linked to antibiotic resistant diseases that can wreak havoc on the body. We also recently wrote about the link between the ongoing treatment of farm animals with low antibiotic doses and how that has directly contributed to wide-spread drug resistance.. If everything stays on schedule (which Im told, it never does, theres always an infection or low counts or something like that to push everything longer) and if the cancer is GONE and STAYS GONE and scans continue to be clear and her echocardiogram is normal so she can stay on the doxorubicin and not have to switch to carboplatin and everything just goes along swimmingly, then her last hospitalization should be the weekend of October 24, which coincidentally, is the weekend when we would normally throw our yearly Halloween party, but this year, of course, wont. Tell your child what to do instead of what not to do. "Stay away from the stove; its hot," warns your child without using "no." You can also suggest, "Come and cook over here with your own pots and pans." When your child picks up a package, you can say, "Put it down carefully," instead of, "No! Dont touch that.". Offer suggestions instead of using "No". "I wonder if there is another truck for Billy?" rather than "No dont do that. Give it back." The use of "no" should be saved for times when your child is in danger of hurting herself, other people, or your possessions. For example, if your child is climbing on bookshelves that could fall over and hurt her, say "No, stay on the floor" or "No! The shelves could fall over and hurt you." Move her to a safe spot and get her interested in a different activity or toy.. Every time she tries to climb the shelves, warn her again, "Stay on the floor. You could fall if you climb on the shelves." Move her away from the shelves. Talk to her firmly, without ...
The most powerful and long-lasting control of HIV comes from a persons first regimen if taken properly. The longer a person can stay on it without major side effects or drug resistance, the better.. To tell if your regimen is working, you should see a 90% drop in your viral load within a month or two. (See page 5.) Most people can reach an undetectable level within six months, although it may take up to a year if youre over 50 or have another condition like hepatitis C.. When a persons viral load remains undetectable for at least one year on treatment, it usually remains that way for at least another two years, assuming they take their meds as prescribed. Some people have been able to stay on their first regimen for up to eight years without having to switch. This is true for almost any regimen.. ...
The answer is probably yes. There is a recent article in a medical journal* summarizing several studies addressing this question (a meta-analysis). This has been a source of arguments as to whether progesterone helps prevent miscarriage early on in pregnancy and many studies have said that it does. Unless you are on an unusually high dose it would be fine to continue. The only adverse effect of progesterone that I know of is extremely rare and that is an effect on limb growth. The best thing would be to ask your obstetrician what he or she recommends.. *Fertility and Sterility Volume107, Issue 2, Pages 430-438. ...

I love this little application/utility, but one thing I could do with when using Pipette is the ability for Pipette to have a "Stay On Top" of other Windows function as an optional feature.. I constantly find that Pipette has been excluded or hidden from view by another window or series of windows overlapping or covering it up completely.. If it was possible to have the "Stay On Top" feature/function, I think it would add to the ease and simplicity of this great utility.. If you would consider this as a possibility for the future, that would be excellent.. Many thanks. Andrew. Submitted by Andrew at 10:22pm on 08 Sep 2007 ...

In the Fall of 2013, we were excitedly awaiting the arrival of our third child. My oldest had just started Kindergarten and my "baby" was about to be 5. We had decided on the name "Noelle" because she was to be born a month or so after Christmas. I imagined it being really sweet to be "great with child" and singing songs like "The First Noel" with my kids, while they felt her move and kick inside of me. In August, I began to bleed at 18 weeks, and my dreams of a "normal" pregnancy were replaced by a growing fear. My perinatologist, Dr. Jeffrey Korotkin expressed he was concerned that the bleeding could lead to my membranes rupturing early, causing pre-term labor. He was not exactly sure where the bleeding was coming from, but was guessing that it was probably from the placenta, and that something could be wrong with the placenta. I was told to stay on modified bedrest at home with the hope that the bleeding would stop. It did not. At 21 weeks, my water broke and I laid on my couch in shock and ...
Richard - If you keep losing weight Im going to have to join you on this diet (I have a stubborn 5lbs that I put on during my last stress-i-sode year of working two jobs and countless deadlines). Have you ever noticed how often, people in stressful jobs consistently put on weight? It seems that the job groups who have high stress and less time to pursue quality of life activities (exercise, etc) tend more this way. Nursing comes to mind. Some think its the build up of cortisol, and biased opinions rule. Well, its an aside. Except for the dairy, and a little bread & alcohol, I am already on your diet. Maybe after the holiday weekend...... One thing I wanted to warn you about is balancing out the high protein with vegies and fruits - lots of meat can build up acids in your system that can have all sorts of nasty side-effects. Probably something youd have to worry about only if you stay on it a long time ...
Work has taken away my flex-time arrangement that was organised with the director of the writing and L10N group a year ago. At that time I was told that I should record accrued increments of 15 minutes here and there, and then take a day off once I had 8 hours or more. Apparently someone complained about this arrangement, in addition to complaining about the fact that I (am medically required to) work at home one day a week. Only weekend training courses or 2am seminars accrue time-in-lieu/flex-time. I was actually asked to not keep a record of the hours I work, and have been asked to quit the extras I do - social club secretary/finance/etc., editing bits and pieces for various departments. However, I was asked to stay on the OHSE committee because, in their words, "Im the one who gets things done"..... :-/ So much for the flexibility proclaimed in job postings. The policies do not limit flex-time in this way. This will upset more than just me, many others seem to enjoy a lot more flexibility. ...

Ok there is a problem with my dog if he walks and comes to a stop he always sits he never stays on all fours. This started since he got groomed last weekend, I am wondering if he got hurt but he is jumping and walking normal. I am going to take him to a vet this week.
It definitely gets ridiculously hot here. Generally, the dogs just dont get quite as much outdoor exercise during the summer as they do during the rest of the year. Here are some of our summer strategies. *We visit our friends with pools and let the dogs swim. *We go to the top of Mt. Lemmon and hike where it is much cooler and shadier. There is also a little creek with cool water for the dogs to cool off in. *We bring a lot of water with us for the dogs (and for us). *We take day trips with the dogs to shadier locations so we can actually stand to be outside. *We walk the dogs before the sun comes up and after the sun sets. *Lightweight booties help with the hot pavement, but we try to stay on the grass or dirt in the summer. *We take weekend trips with the dogs to San Diego, Flagstaff, Prescott and other places that arent quite so hot. *Instead of a hard core fetch game, we just go out in the shade and I throw the ball a few feet. The dogs are happy with that. *During monsoon time, we go out ...
I cant go into detail with exactly what my program is about to look like because from here on out it is about as up in the air as a serious program can be. With the CrossFit Community Month about to hit, I will be attacking a month where I have very little control over what I do. This is going to be a huge challenge for me to not over-train, and to stay on top of things to make sure I am constantly seeing progress. The only thing stopping me from doing ten straight days of shoulder work is myself, and I need to always make sure I am protecting myself even though the temptation to just do whatever is written. I will be taking a good deal of time organizing the whole month to make sure I schedule proper breaks, and have the time and energy to keep up the work on my weaknesses to stay balanced. It will be a challenge, but a fun one all the same. Once February hits, I will be taking another look at my training to make sure I am on the right track. Thats when you will see a post filled with plenty ...
Just wanted to thank you for your invaluable insights in SJWAL... I got roped into joining my HOA board a year and a half ago after the former president rage quit due to residents being angry with her behavior. She actually recommended me as a replacement. I think she actually thought I was an SJW and that she was going to be able to control me since all my interactions with her were friendly agreements in the interests of trying to get her away from me as fast as possible. She is retired so she has plenty of free time and has always been the neighbor that snoops in everyones business and selectively complains about neighbors she does not like violating minor rules. She had been working on updating the community rules book when she quit and the rest of the board wanted to allow her to stay on the rules committee. Whenever the topic came up, I said "that is fine, but she does realize that the board can vote to accept, reject or modify her proposed rules ...
