2 April 2003. The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) continues in the affected areas* : Canada (Toronto), China (Guangdong Province, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, Shanxi Province, Taiwan Province), Singapore (Singapore), Vietnam (Hanoi). The agent causing SARS is under intensive international study, but as of today it has not been fully characterized, and there is no vaccine or other prophylaxis available.. Since WHO issued the global alert on the 12th of March national authorities have implemented heightened surveillance for cases of SARS and where such cases have been identified their prompt isolation has prevented further spread of the disease in virtually all countries. For instance the outbreak in Hanoi has passed its peak and no new cases have been identified for the last week. Last week WHO issued recommendations aimed at further limiting the spread of SARS and protecting international air passengers. These recommendations still apply (see WHO ...

The special administrative regions (SAR) are one type of provincial-level administrative divisions of China directly under Central Peoples Government, which enjoys the highest degree of autonomy, and no or less interference by either Central Government or the Chinese Communist Party.. The legal basis for the establishment of SARs, unlike the administrative divisions of Mainland China, is provided for by Article 31, rather than Article 30, of the Constitution of the Peoples Republic of China of 1982. Article 31 reads: The state may establish special administrative regions when necessary.[3][4][5] The systems to be instituted in special administrative regions shall be prescribed by law enacted by the National Peoples Congress in the light of the specific conditions.[6]. At present, there are two SARs established according to the Constitution, namely the Hong Kong SAR and the Macau SAR, former British and Portuguese dependencies respectively,[7] transferred to China in 1997 and 1999 ...

The two novel mutations p.Asp266Asn and p.Thr576Pro in the AR gene lie within the N-terminal domain of the androgen receptor that is involved in transcription regulation and DNA binding, respectively. Missense mutations around these two codons have been reported in patients with AIS according to the Androgen Receptor Gene Mutations Database, April 2013.20 Multiple sequence alignment shows that both amino acids are highly conserved among different species, suggesting that aspartic acid at codon 266 and threonine at codon 576 are critical for proper receptor function. Similarly, the alanine at codon 260 of the NR5A1 gene is located in helix 3 of the ligand-binding domain of the nuclear receptor,21 and is also a highly conserved region. Mutation in this region has been reported to result in 46,XY DSD.8 Replacing alanine at this position by valine is therefore expected to be deleterious to the protein function. Phenotypic variability in NR5A1 gene mutation within a kindred has been reported and this ...

The Hong Kong Morris (Chinese: 香港莫利斯舞蹈團) is an English morris dancing side founded in Hong Kong in 1974. The side now has two chapters, the Hong Kong Morris in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong (UK) Morris, colloquially known as The Brackets, in the United Kingdom. In its heyday, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Hong Kong Morris was one of the largest Cotswold morris sides in the world. The Hong Kong Morris attracted its first women members in the late 1970s, at a time when there was considerable opposition to womens morris dancing in the United Kingdom. Women and men have always danced together in the Hong Kong Morris, either in mixed sets or in separate sets. By the mid-1980s the sides growing numbers enabled strong mens and womens sets to develop, and each set began to specialise in certain Cotswold traditions, while retaining a large common core of dances for mixed dancing. The Hong Kong Morris was briefly a member side of the Morris Ring, but was asked to leave the Ring ...

The ecology of Hong Kong is mostly affected by the results of climatic changes. Hong Kongs climate is seasonal due to alternating wind direction between winter and summer. Hong Kong has been geologically stable for millions of years. Flora and fauna in Hong Kong are altered by climatic change, sea level alternation, and human impact. Hong Kongs climate is subtropical but half the year is temperate. The territory is situated South of the tropic of Cancer which is equal to Hawaii in latitude. In winter, strong and cold wind generates from the North to Hong Kong; in summer, the wind reverses in direction and brings the warm and humid air from the South. This climate would support a tropical rainforest. The total land area of Hong Kong is 1,076 square kilometers, but about 75% of this land is open countryside[citation needed], which contains more than 2600 species of vascular plants, about 450 species of birds, about 200 species of butterflies, about 100 species of dragonflies, 40 species of ...
Hip fracture is a major public health problem in Asia and the UK. The objectives of this study were to describe the trends of hip fracture in Hong Kong over the last decade, and to compare the incidence in Hong Kong with that from the Wessex Health Region of the UK in 1995.The number of hip fractures was calculated using hospital discharge records for all public hospitals in Hong Kong in 1991 and 1995. Age-specific incidence rates were then calculated using the mid-year census population for the two years. These rates were presented with previously reported age-specific rates for Hong Kong in 1966 and 1985. These age-specific rates for Hong Kong in 1995 were compared with rates for the Wessex Health Region of the UK. The total number of hip fracture expected in 2010 was calculated by applying the age-specific rates of 1995 to the projected population for 2010.In 1995, a total of 1138 men and 2782 women in Hong Kong fractured their hip. The age-specific rates had remained static from 1985 to 1995, after

The paper explores the behavior of the long-run real exchange rate (RER) of Hong Kong SAR and China by testing the generalized-purchasing power parity hypothesis (G-PPP). The hypothesis argues that if the fundamental variables determining RERs are sufficiently integrated, as in a currency area, the RERs should share common trends. The findings of this study suggest (1) at present, Hong Kong SAR and China do not satisfy the conditions necessary for forming an optimal currency area by themselves; (2) when Japan and the United States are added to the group, common trends can be found; and (3) the long-run elasticity between the RERs of Hong Kong SAR and China is negative.
For many years New Zealanders have worked in Hong Kong in a variety of professions, and today theres a thriving expat community. Also a former British colony, Hong Kong and New Zealand share many common law traditions and a good number of New Zealand lawyers and judges practice in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a valuable source of international students for New Zealand, with 1,184 choosing to study here in 2014. There are also links between our universities and polytechnics, and an Education Cooperation Arrangement between our respective ministries of education. Tourism is strong in both directions. In 2014 more than 30,000 short term visitors from Hong Hong came to New Zealand, and the same number of New Zealanders visited Hong Kong. HONG KONG (CNN) -- Hong Kong saluted the motherland on National Day, the most important of Chinas official holidays, for the first time Wednesday. For Hong Kong Chinese, the event stirred mixed emotions, from apprehension to new identification. National Day marks the anniversary of the 1949 founding of the Peoples Republic of China. Chinese flags lined many of Hong Kongs busy streets, erected by the local government and civic groups. And at an official flag-raising ceremony at Hong Kongs harbor, the territorys new leader, Tung Chee-hwa, stood at attention as a police band played the Chinese anthem, then raised Chinas flag. Crowds of onlookers waved small Chinese flags. I was a little moved, said one man who attended the ceremony. As someone who grew up in Hong Kong, there was certainly a lack of nationalism. So thats why I brought the kids, to watch the ceremony for themselves. But a young woman counted herself among those in the former British colony who found the new holiday ...

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government expressed (Apr 1) strong objection to the remarks contained in the Hong Kong Policy Act Report issued by US State Department. In a statement, the HKSAR Government said the HKSAR is an inalienable part of the Peoples Republic of China and a local administrative region that enjoys a high degree of autonomy under one country, two systems. It reiterates that national security is a matter within the purview of the central authorities and enacting laws on national security with extraterritorial effect is also squarely in line with international practice. The statement made it clear that the constitutional duty of judges, in the exercise of their judicial power, is to apply the law and nothing else. Such duty does not change when judges decide cases arising from or involving political controversies. In a separate statement, the HKSAR Government said human rights are fully protected by law in Hong Kong. Safeguarding human rights and ...
Hong Kong is the premier international financial centre (IFC) of Asia. We enjoy a leading position in many aspects in the financial sector. However, competition amongst IFCs is always fierce. The ability to expand and upgrade ones professional talent pool and enhance soft power in a sustainable manner will differentiate the true winners. The establishment of the Hong Kong Academy of Finance (AoF) not only nurtures talents in the field of finance, but enhances Hong Kongs competitiveness as an IFC.. In July 2018, following the Financial Secretarys announcement in his 2018-19 Budget Speech, an Experts Group commissioned by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority recommended that the AoF be established in Hong Kong. While Hong Kong has been reasonably well served by the existing providers of training and accreditation, there is one obvious gap that the professional training and accreditation bodies essentially provide sectoral training and accreditation but little focus has been placed on leadership ...
The objective of this study was to validate the Chinese version of the Minimum Data Set-Resident Assessment Instrument (MDS-RAI) in Hong Kong Chinese elders. The respondents were 83 people aged 65 years or older who lived at a care and attention home in Hong Kong. Firstly, test-retest reliabilities of four Resident Assessment Protocol (RAP) scales (including cognitive loss/dementia, communication, activities of daily living/rehabilitation potential, and mood symptoms) were examined and we found acceptable test-retest reliability. Secondly, inter-rater reliability of these four RAPs was found to be acceptable. Concurrent validity was also obtained for these four areas in MDS-RAI and most associations were in the range from 0.4 to 0.6. Results suggest that the Chinese version of MDS-RAI is a reliable and valid assessment tool for elderly Chinese residents in a long-term care facility in Hong Kong. While the soup remains a popular delicacy at weddings, the campaigns of groups like WWF Hong Kong seem to be working.. Last year the Chinese government announced to plans to stop serving shark fin soup at official ceremonies, while earlier this summer various businesses like HSBC and Shangri-La Hotels made a pledge to forbid it at events in China and Korean Air Lines swore off transporting shark parts for consumption. Now the Hong Kong region, also known as the worlds capital of shark fin imports, will ban the dish at all official events and request that government employees refrain from eating it anywhere at any time.. Some say this is all a PR stunt by Hong Kong apparatchiks to convince people that civil servants dont live extravagant lifestyles fueled by the perks of working within the Communist party. Others say its just another nail in the industrys coffin after millions boycotted the soup inspired, at least in part, by these advocacy groups educational campaigns.. While we admire the ...

Hong Kongs coral reefs are badly degraded because of pollution and intense human exploitation and development, which limits their ability to reproduce and recover. As warming oceans damage coral reef ecosystems around the world, areas that are currently colder may become increasingly important as refuges to species seeking to escape rising temperatures. The coast of Southern China, including Hong Kong, is a potentially important habitat for tropical coral species that might shift their ranges north. Corals that are now present in Hong Kong and Southern China may also serve as the genetic pool for future coral expansion because of their greater tolerance to environmental stresses.. Chui will develop a technique for restoring Hong Kongs reefs-still very biodiverse despite their condition-using sexually reproduced corals rather than coral fragments. These fragments are broken portions of a coral colony that are typically used for reef restoration. Coral populations derived from sexual ...
