2 April 2003. The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) continues in the affected areas* : Canada (Toronto), China (Guangdong Province, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, Shanxi Province, Taiwan Province), Singapore (Singapore), Vietnam (Hanoi). The agent causing SARS is under intensive international study, but as of today it has not been fully characterized, and there is no vaccine or other prophylaxis available.. Since WHO issued the global alert on the 12th of March national authorities have implemented heightened surveillance for cases of SARS and where such cases have been identified their prompt isolation has prevented further spread of the disease in virtually all countries. For instance the outbreak in Hanoi has passed its peak and no new cases have been identified for the last week. Last week WHO issued recommendations aimed at further limiting the spread of SARS and protecting international air passengers. These recommendations still apply (see WHO ...

The special administrative regions (SAR) are one type of provincial-level administrative divisions of China directly under Central Peoples Government, which enjoys the highest degree of autonomy, and no or less interference by either Central Government or the Chinese Communist Party.. The legal basis for the establishment of SARs, unlike the administrative divisions of Mainland China, is provided for by Article 31, rather than Article 30, of the Constitution of the Peoples Republic of China of 1982. Article 31 reads: "The state may establish special administrative regions when necessary.[3][4][5] The systems to be instituted in special administrative regions shall be prescribed by law enacted by the National Peoples Congress in the light of the specific conditions".[6]. At present, there are two SARs established according to the Constitution, namely the Hong Kong SAR and the Macau SAR, former British and Portuguese dependencies respectively,[7] transferred to China in 1997 and 1999 ...

The two novel mutations p.Asp266Asn and p.Thr576Pro in the AR gene lie within the N-terminal domain of the androgen receptor that is involved in transcription regulation and DNA binding, respectively. Missense mutations around these two codons have been reported in patients with AIS according to the Androgen Receptor Gene Mutations Database, April 2013.20 Multiple sequence alignment shows that both amino acids are highly conserved among different species, suggesting that aspartic acid at codon 266 and threonine at codon 576 are critical for proper receptor function. Similarly, the alanine at codon 260 of the NR5A1 gene is located in helix 3 of the ligand-binding domain of the nuclear receptor,21 and is also a highly conserved region. Mutation in this region has been reported to result in 46,XY DSD.8 Replacing alanine at this position by valine is therefore expected to be deleterious to the protein function. Phenotypic variability in NR5A1 gene mutation within a kindred has been reported and this ...

The Hong Kong Morris (Chinese: 香港莫利斯舞蹈團) is an English morris dancing side founded in Hong Kong in 1974. The side now has two chapters, the Hong Kong Morris in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong (UK) Morris, colloquially known as The Brackets, in the United Kingdom. In its heyday, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Hong Kong Morris was one of the largest Cotswold morris sides in the world. The Hong Kong Morris attracted its first women members in the late 1970s, at a time when there was considerable opposition to womens morris dancing in the United Kingdom. Women and men have always danced together in the Hong Kong Morris, either in mixed sets or in separate sets. By the mid-1980s the sides growing numbers enabled strong mens and womens sets to develop, and each set began to specialise in certain Cotswold traditions, while retaining a large common core of dances for mixed dancing. The Hong Kong Morris was briefly a member side of the Morris Ring, but was asked to leave the Ring ...

The ecology of Hong Kong is mostly affected by the results of climatic changes. Hong Kongs climate is seasonal due to alternating wind direction between winter and summer. Hong Kong has been geologically stable for millions of years. Flora and fauna in Hong Kong are altered by climatic change, sea level alternation, and human impact. Hong Kongs climate is subtropical but half the year is temperate. The territory is situated South of the tropic of Cancer which is equal to Hawaii in latitude. In winter, strong and cold wind generates from the North to Hong Kong; in summer, the wind reverses in direction and brings the warm and humid air from the South. This climate would support a tropical rainforest. The total land area of Hong Kong is 1,076 square kilometers, but about 75% of this land is open countryside[citation needed], which contains more than 2600 species of vascular plants, about 450 species of birds, about 200 species of butterflies, about 100 species of dragonflies, 40 species of ...
Hip fracture is a major public health problem in Asia and the UK. The objectives of this study were to describe the trends of hip fracture in Hong Kong over the last decade, and to compare the incidence in Hong Kong with that from the Wessex Health Region of the UK in 1995.The number of hip fractures was calculated using hospital discharge records for all public hospitals in Hong Kong in 1991 and 1995. Age-specific incidence rates were then calculated using the mid-year census population for the two years. These rates were presented with previously reported age-specific rates for Hong Kong in 1966 and 1985. These age-specific rates for Hong Kong in 1995 were compared with rates for the Wessex Health Region of the UK. The total number of hip fracture expected in 2010 was calculated by applying the age-specific rates of 1995 to the projected population for 2010.In 1995, a total of 1138 men and 2782 women in Hong Kong fractured their hip. The age-specific rates had remained static from 1985 to 1995, after

The paper explores the behavior of the long-run real exchange rate (RER) of Hong Kong SAR and China by testing the generalized-purchasing power parity hypothesis (G-PPP). The hypothesis argues that if the fundamental variables determining RERs are sufficiently integrated, as in a currency area, the RERs should share common trends. The findings of this study suggest (1) at present, Hong Kong SAR and China do not satisfy the conditions necessary for forming an optimal currency area by themselves; (2) when Japan and the United States are added to the group, common trends can be found; and (3) the long-run elasticity between the RERs of Hong Kong SAR and China is negative.
For many years New Zealanders have worked in Hong Kong in a variety of professions, and today theres a thriving expat community. Also a former British colony, Hong Kong and New Zealand share many common law traditions and a good number of New Zealand lawyers and judges practice in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a valuable source of international students for New Zealand, with 1,184 choosing to study here in 2014. There are also links between our universities and polytechnics, and an Education Cooperation Arrangement between our respective ministries of education. Tourism is strong in both directions. In 2014 more than 30,000 short term visitors from Hong Hong came to New Zealand, and the same number of New Zealanders visited Hong Kong. We have a popular and reciprocal working holiday arrangement with Hong Kong which up to 400 young people take advantage of each year. ...
HONG KONG (CNN) -- Hong Kong saluted the motherland on National Day, the most important of Chinas official holidays, for the first time Wednesday. For Hong Kong Chinese, the event stirred mixed emotions, from apprehension to new identification. National Day marks the anniversary of the 1949 founding of the Peoples Republic of China. Chinese flags lined many of Hong Kongs busy streets, erected by the local government and civic groups. And at an official flag-raising ceremony at Hong Kongs harbor, the territorys new leader, Tung Chee-hwa, stood at attention as a police band played the Chinese anthem, then raised Chinas flag. Crowds of onlookers waved small Chinese flags. "I was a little moved," said one man who attended the ceremony. "As someone who grew up in Hong Kong, there was certainly a lack of nationalism. So thats why I brought the kids, to watch the ceremony for themselves." But a young woman counted herself among those in the former British colony who found the new holiday ...

The six, chosen from JMSC Associate Professor Thomas Abrahams Reporting Health and Medicine class, comprised Nancy Dai Yue, Sophia Xu, Emma Jia, Nicky Ng, Qian Xu and Shirley Yan.. Topics of discussion at the Hong Kong Child Safety Conference on February 11 ranged from violence and bullying, alcohol and substance abuse, cyber bullying, suicide, traffic injuries, domestic injuries and sports injuries.. Xu said it was a good opportunity to hone her reporting on deadline.. "We had to finish the story half an hour after the session - so it was really newsroom-style speed and I gained a lot confidence from this challenge," she said.. Dai also found the experience valuable. "Journalism is always about simplifying complicated ideas and telling them to the audience in an effective way," Dai said.. "I had to constantly keep up with the speakers, extract the main points from their speeches and write the ideas in a simple but precise way so that people who were not present at my session could understand ...

After WWII and the proclamation of the Peoples Republic of China many Chinese citizens and businesses fled to Hong Kong, setting the groundwork for a rapid increase in industrialization from the 1950s onward. On July 1, 1997 Britain officially relinquished sovereignty of the area to the Peoples Republic of China. It has remained a "Special Administrative Region" of China. Citizens of Hong Kong enjoy the protections of a constitution and a legal tradition based on the Common Law of England.. The University of Hong Kong was established in 1911 and enjoys a reputation of legal excellence throughout China and the world. The Faculty of Law is regarded as the best law school in Hong Kong and in the top tier of the Asia-Pacific area. The law school was founded in 1969 and its graduates have formed a rich mosaic of business leaders, academics, and civil servants. The law school has a large undergraduate population and a smaller JD and postgraduate population. ...
The bamboo pit viper (Trimeresurus albolabris, Gray 1842) is broadly distributed through South and Southeast Asia. This venomous snake occurs in high abundances in Hong Kong, and frequently comes into contact with humans. Thus it is viewed as a nuisance species and is commonly translocated away from areas of human habitation. Despite being relatively abundant and a frequent focus of humansnake conflict in the region, very little is known about the ecology, demography, and the effects of long-distance translocation on this species. I captured 104 T. albolabris from throughout Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China and collected morphometric and reproductive information. I conducted radio-telemetry on 41 individuals (21 translocated and 20 resident) and obtained information on survival, movements, reproduction and brumation. Trimeresurus albolabris exhibited an even sex ratio. Females attain sexual maturity at ~460 mm snout-vent length, and males at ~ 410 mm snout-vent length. Mating occurs

During weeks 22 and 23 in 2012, laboratory confirmed influenza activity remained low in many parts of the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere the influenza season started in some countries with local outbreaks reported. Globally, A(H3N2) viruses remained the dominant virus followed by influenza B and influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses respectively. In Asia, influenza A(H3N2) activity has remained high in the China Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. In week 23, a detection of an oseltamivir resistant influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, the 20th case since 2009, was reported. In Europe, influenza activity was low with sporadic detections reported.. In North America, among the continuing declining detections of influenza viruses, influenza B viruses outnumbered A(H3N2) viruses in recent weeks. In Central America an increase of influenza activity has been observed. A regional outbreak of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses was reported in El Salvador. In Africa, local outbreaks of predominantly ...

This is the first study reporting the characteristics of all COPD admissions to public hospital in Hong Kong. In our study, we found that there were high admission and unplanned readmission rates in Hong Kong and 8.0% of admission episodes to medical wards were COPD admissions. As medical admissions contributed to approximately half of the total admission in HA, our figure of 8.0% was comparable to the COPD annual admissions of 4% of the total admissions reported by HA in year 2008-2009 [17]. This figure was significantly higher than previously reported in UK, which was around 1% [4]. Admission and readmission to hospital are very common among COPD patients discharged from hospital after an acute exacerbation [18]. 80% of patients requiring inpatient management of a severe exacerbation are readmitted with a year [19]. Unplanned readmission has a great impact on hospital stay and healthcare expenses [20, 21] but unplanned readmission of COPD is seldom reported. In our study, the unplanned ...
The openings are intended to give Hong Kong companies an advantage over foreign groups in entering the vast Chinese market. But Cepa has also benefited foreign companies that have set up operations in Hong Kong. Under Cepa rules, companies need only to be incorporated in Hong Kong and have had three to five years of substantive operations in the city to be eligible.. Just hours before Mr Hu landed in Hong Kong on Friday, his commerce minister, Bo Xilai, oversaw the signing of the fourth phase of Cepa, under which the central government is to implement 40 liberalisation measures in 28 services areas. The new agreement, which will take effect next year, expands Cepa to cover elderly care, green technology and public utilities, and also furthered liberalisation of the banking, legal and tourism sectors. The comments came days after the national security law for Hong Kong was unanimously passed by the top Chinese legislative body, the standing committee of the National Peoples Congress (NPC), on Tuesday, later signed by President Xi Jinping. The law aimed at boosting security and safety, is seen by Hong Kong residents as a violation of their liberties. Following the adoption of the HK Security Law, the United Kingdom moved to call out the move, with PM Johnson denouncing the legislation as one that breaches the Sino-British Joint Declaration. The ambassador tweeted in response that "UK has no sovereignty, jurisdiction or right of "supervision" over Hong Kong whatsoever", and stressed that Hong Kong issues are Chinas internal affair alone and no business of the outside worlds. ...

Opened since October 1, 1902, the hotel was housed in two separate premises, viz. the Royal Building, a distinguished seven-stories (six above ground and one under) building designed by Hong Kongs original architectural firm Leigh and Orange, on Des Voeux Road fronting Ice House Street, and the nearby Princes Building. 43 guestrooms, food and beverage outlets and back-of-the-house facilities went into the Royal Building. Another 27 guestrooms (including six let to Johnson, Stokes and Master, Solicitors and Notaries, as offices) and staff dining facilities were housed on the bottom three stories of the Princes Building. The hotel (the leasehold not the Royal Building which was owned by the China Land Investment Co. 中華置業公司) was owned in 1915 by ...
