In this issue of the journal, Jin et al. [1] report a detailed analysis of the association between sexual risk-reduction behaviours other than condom use and incident HIV infection in a cohort of HIV-seronegative men who have sex with men (MSM) in Sydney, Australia. Sexual risk-reduction behaviours that are studied here include serosorting, unprotected anal intercourse with HIV-seronegative partners only; negotiated safety, unprotected anal intercourse with HIV-seronegative primary partners only; strategic positioning, unprotected insertive anal intercourse and withdrawal, unprotected receptive anal intercourse without ejaculation. In a world where condom use during anal intercourse has been the cornerstone of HIV prevention among MSM, it is remarkable that all these risk-reduction behaviours include anal intercourse without condom use. This inevitably raises the question why the sexual behaviour identified as the primary driver of the HIV epidemic in MSM has become the central component ...
The group of men who have sex with men (MSM) accounts for the largest number of new HIV infections [1]. The HIV infection rate in the Asian MSM population has dramatically increased in recent years, and unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) and multiple sexual partners (MSP) are considered to be the leading risk factors for HIV infection among MSM [2-5]. This is also the case in China, and as MSM who have UAI with men may also have unprotected sex with women, there is a risk of spreading HIV to the general population [6]. There are an estimated 10 to 25 million MSM in China; estimates of the HIV prevalence due to high risk sexual behaviors (especially UAI) in the MSM population range from 6.5 to 7.2% [6-8]. When it comes to high-risk sexual behaviors among MSM, it mainly means UAI and MSP. Of those living with HIV/AIDS in China, an estimated 27.2% were infected via unprotected sexual intercourse among MSM [9, 10].. The MSM population may not be accepted by most Chinese families. The pressure of ...
Our study showed that MSWs reported more HIV risk behaviours in comparison to other MSM, including a higher number of male sexual partners, a higher proportion reporting substance use and receptive anal sex, and a lower proportion accessing STI services. The prevalence of HIV and HSV-2 among MSM in general, and MSWs in particular, was high. HIV prevalence among MSWs was associated with the place of residence (higher in Hyderabad than Mumbai), HSV-2 and syphilis seropositive status and duration of sex work. Our survey also found a very high HIV prevalence of 57% among MSWs who had sold sex for more than 10 years. As the duration in sex work increased, MSWs were less likely to report insertive anal sex and more likely to self-identify as kothis/engaging in receptive anal sex. As compared to Mumbai, MSWs from Hyderabad were at higher risk for HIV possibly owing to several factors; they were older, a higher proportion were selling sex, reported higher rates of receptive anal sex and substance use, ...
Since 2000, outbreaks of HCV infection have been reported in HIV-infected MSM [5-10]. We have estimated the incidence of HCV over the last two decades in a large group of HIV-infected MSM with documented dates of HIV seroconversion in Europe and Canada. Our data show that, regardless of the estimation method applied, HCV incidence had already increased in the period before 2000 and has continued to do so since. These results are in agreement with a recent phylogenetic study in which the divergence of currently circulating HCV viral strains was used to reconstruct the history of the HCV epidemic among HIV-positive MSM. Of all transmission events in that study, 15% was estimated to have occurred before 1996, 22% in the period 1996-2000 and 63% after 2000 [11]. The few longitudinal studies on the incidence of HCV in HIV-infected MSM that evaluated time trends have limited statistical power owing to the small numbers of observed HCV seroconversions or dichotomized calendar period. The HCV incidence ...
Although men who have sex with men (MSM) recruited through web-based and venue-based sampling methods have been compared, no large web-based and venue-based samples using similar survey instruments have been examined in the U.S. This study describes the differences in sociodemographic characteristics and risk behaviors between the 2012 Web-based HIV Behavioral Survey (n = 3221) and 2011 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (n = 9256). Compared with participants in the venue-based sample, participants in the web-based sample were older, less likely to be black or Hispanic, more likely to have higher socioeconomic status, and more likely to have anal sex without a condom with their last male sex partner. Web-based participants were less likely to have multiple male sex partners, ever injected drugs, been tested for HIV in the past 12 months, and received free condoms than venue-based participants. The method for sampling MSM into a behavioral survey should consider the sub-population of MSM to be ...
New cases of hepatitis C amongst HIV positive men in London & Brighton have fallen by nearly 70%, according to researchers at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
The purpose of this study was to contribute to the conceptual understanding and practical application of social integration theory to health behaviors. The research aimed to investigate the protective effects of community involvement in HIV/AIDS and gay-related organizations for HIV/AIDS sexual risk behavior among Latino gay or bisexual men and transgender individuals in Chicago and San Francisco. As part of this, the study examined HIV prevalence and the socioeconomic correlates of HIV infection, sexual risk behaviors, and substance use. Further, the study tested whether community involvement in AIDS and LGBT organizations moderated the relationship of racial and homosexual stigma to sexual risk behavior. Data were collected from a sample of 643 individuals (Chicago: n=320; San Francisco: n=323) through respondent-driven sampling and computer-assisted self-administered interviews. Demographic variables included ethnic identification, sexual identification, ZIP code (only available in restricted ...
Among men who have sex with men (MSM), the largest population living with HIV in the U.S., poor self-care behaviors occur within the context of intertwined psychosocial problems, called syndemics. Important affected health behaviors include sexual transmission risk and adherence to antiretroviral therapy. In major cities, one in five MSM are living with HIV/AIDS, making these domestic MSM rates comparable to many endemic settings such as Sub-Saharan Africa. Because of antiretroviral therapy, HIV-infected individuals are living with the virus longer and the population of HIV-infected MSM continues to grow.. Study after study concludes that psychosocial problems/intertwined syndemics such as depression, substance abuse, and childhood sexual abuse significantly contribute to poor self-care behaviors such as sexual risk behaviors among MSM. Despite this, one reason for the modest effects of behavioral interventions for HIV is that they generally do not address the unique and varied psychosocial ...

Research to improve understanding of African MSM. 1. The epidemiology of MSM in Africa The keynote address entitled "Time to act: Responding to the HIV Pandemic Among MSM" was delivered by Professor Chris Beyrer of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Systematic reviews of HIV living in low and middle-income countries, from which data are available, consistently show that MSM are at high risk of HIV compared to the local heterosexual population. Aggregate HIV prevalences among African MSM are reported to range from 8.8% in Sudan to 32.9% in Zambia. Many of these studies were performed using respondent driven or snowball sampling and therefore are not generalizable but highlight a concentrated MSM HIV epidemic in countries with more generalized heterosexual epidemics. Biologically, unprotected anal sex, particularly receptive anal sex carries a high risk of transmitting HIV (Estimated to be approx. 1.4% with each episode which is 18 times higher than for vaginal sex.). Individual ...
HIV prevalence in 2014 stood at an estimated 243,000 cases among white MSM, at 198,100 among black MSM, and at 138,800 among Hispanic MSM. From 2008 through 2014, estimated percentage of undiagnosed HIV cases fell by 4.3% in black MSM, by 3.6% in Hispanic MSM, and by 3.6% in white MSM. By age, the percentage of MSM with undiagnosed fell by an estimated 4.5% from 2008 through 2014 in 13-to-24-year-olds, fell by 1.2% among 25-to-34-year-olds, stayed nearly flat (+0.5%) in 35-to-44-year-olds, fell by 1.1% in 45-to-54-year-olds, and fell by 6.8% in MSM 55 or older ...

After an initial peak in the mid-1980s, HIV incidence in men who have sex with men (MSM) declined in most western industrialised countries and then levelled off during the 1990s. Since the late 1990s, increasing numbers of newly diagnosed HIV infections in MSM have been observed in the majority of countries with large and visible MSM communities. Based on a review of national and international behavioural surveillance studies of MSM and national HIV surveillance data, we propose a model for the HIV epidemic in MSM in Germany. The model includes aspects such as individuals increasing numbers of sexual partners and increasing frequency of unprotected anal intercourse, conditional condom use based on real or perceived HIV status of sexual partners (HIV serosorting) and sexual role assignments (insertive versus receptive based on HIV status (HIV seropositioning), selection of partners and formation of sexual networks through seeking sexual partners on the internet, the introduction of HAART and

Objectives: The primary objective was to determine the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) in a cohort of HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) in their primary care setting, and to identify the demographic and behavioral characteristics of those infected with STIs and the correlates of sexual transmission risk behavior (TRB).. Methods: At study entry, participants (n=398) were tested for STIs and their medical charts were reviewed for STI results in the previous year. Data on demographics, substance use, sexual behavior, and HIV-disease characteristics were collected through a computer-assisted self-assessment and medical record extraction. Logistic regression analyses assessed characteristics of those with recent STIs and recent TRB.. Results: The sample was predominantly Caucasian (74.6%) and college educated (51.7%). On average, participants were 41.5 (SD=8.4) years old and had been HIV-infected for 8.6 years (SD=6.7). Nine percent of the sample had an STI, with 6.4% ...
4. Homosexual relations are "uniformly unhealthy" (Fitzgibbons). According to Massachusetts physician Dr. John R. Diggs, Jr., sexual relations between members of the same sex, by their very nature, have negative consequences for physical and mental health (Diggs 3). Consider, for example, the practice of anal-genital sex that commonly occurs between gay men (5). A three-year study by the Stop AIDS Project in San Francisco found that among 21,857 men who had sex with men, about 60 percent regularly practiced anal sex, with the number rising as the years passed ("Increases in Unsafe Sex"). According to the "most comprehensive representative survey of sexual practices in the general adult population of the United States," about 80 percent of men who had sex with men in the past year had active anal sex with at least one male partner, and the same proportion is true for receptive anal sex (Laumann 318). To deny that anal sex is unnatural and unhealthy is to deny the most fundamental human physiology ...

The arrival, one morning in October 1980, of a hairdresser from Hollywood in Joel Weismans consulting room was rudely to this relative optimism. This young gay man of twenty-five, with no known medical history, was suffering from a chronic infection of the skin, the mucous membranes, and the nails. His epidermis is nothing but one big open wound, Joel Weisman noted on his card. Disconcerted by the extent of the infection, he picked up his telephone and dialed the number of the only person who in his view was capable of curing this patient. (Lapierre, Beyond Love, p.39-40). But only in part: For a number of scientists and physicians first involved in AIDS were either gay or familiar with the gay community. Many CDC staff members had worked closely with the gay community in the course of the research on hepatitis B and had few illusions about sexual practices and sexual diversity, and were aware that not all gay men were active with multiple partners. (Treichler, AIDS, Gender, and Biomedical ...

I do feel it is worth pointing out that there is a subculture that exists where gay men meet other gay men at clubs, raves, what-have-you, they all smoke crystal meth and have sex together. I know Im going to be called a gay-basher and I absolutely am not. This behavior does seem more isolated in homosexual men. And when there are many people doing this, it only takes a few infected people before the disease starts spreading rather quickly. I acknowledge that many people get wasted and hook up, but I think that with HIV infections being more prevalent in the gay male community, combined with a very small percentage of that groups poor choices, equals a much larger rate of HIV infection amongst young gay males. Even men who may not attend these functions may end up at one time having a partner that has participated or who has himself had a partner who participated, and they could all be infected ...

OBJECTIVES To evaluate trends in the HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) in San Francisco and the implications for HIV prevention. METHODS An ecological approach assessed temporal trends in sexual risk behaviour, sexually transmitted infections (STI), HIV incidence and prevalence from multiple data sources between 1998 and 2007. RESULTS By 2007, there were over 13 000 HIV-infected MSM living in San Francisco. No consistent upward or downward temporal trends were found in HIV incidence, newly reported HIV cases, AIDS deaths, proportion of AIDS cases using antiretroviral therapy, rectal gonorrhoea or primary and secondary syphilis cases among MSM during the study period. Trends in indicators of sexual risk behaviour among MSM were mixed. Overall, unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) increased in community-based surveys. Among HIV-positive MSM, no significant trends were noted for UAI. Among HIV-negative MSM, UAI with unknown serostatus partners decreased but increased with potentially

This collection of 20 articles consists primarily of previously published works, with a few selections apparently written for this book. The selections cover five topics: social and legal oppression of gay men; the identity and self-concept of gay men; the "gay scene" or homosexual subculture (including gay bars, gay ghettos, etc." gay life-styles; and the organized social and political gay organizations. Taken as a whole, this is a good collection of the available sociological information regarding male homosexuality. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved) ...
Abstract. The objective was to examine the association between circumcision status and self-reported HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Britain who predominantly or exclusively engaged in insertive anal intercourse. In 2007-2008, a convenience sample of MSM living in Britain was recruited through websites, in sexual health clinics, bars, clubs, and other venues. Men completed an online survey which included questions on circumcision status, HIV testing, HIV status, sexual risk behavior, and sexual role for anal sex. The analysis was restricted to 1,521 white British MSM who reported unprotected anal intercourse in the previous 3 months and who said they only or mostly took the insertive role during anal sex. Of these men, 254 (16.7 %) were circumcised. Among men who had had a previous HIV test (n = 1,097), self-reported HIV seropositivity was 8.6 % for circumcised men (17/197) and 8.9 % for uncircumcised men (80/900) (unadjusted odds ratio [OR], 0.97; 95 % confidence interval ...
It is courageous of Dr Manasseh Phiri to have come clean and straight forward on the issue of homosexuality especially in prisons. Such courage deserve support especially in our country Zambia where homosexuality is treated as taboo. I have always thought homosexuals are humans like any other Zambian whose rights must be respected, as to whether that means legalizing homosexuality iam not sure. First and foremost, Doc mentions prisons as places where homosexuality is prevalent, but the question is, are the prisoners who are involved in homosexuality doing it because of their biological make up or because they are victims of circumstances? Should we legalize homosexuality for the sake of it or because other countries are doing so or because of donors pressure? Much as i agree that prisoners who are victims of circumstances should be helped through the distribution of condoms, iam of the view that these simple statistics should not sway us to legalize it. We must acknowledge that they do exist and ...
Homosexuality is a very big issue-especially in America. Many Americans are trying to force all members of society to accept homosexuality as normal, good, and even beneficial. These people are called "gay-rights activists." They promote what is called the "gay-rights movement.". As we have studied in Discovery this month, homosexuality is sinful (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). But those who support gay-rights are producing materials aimed at elementary school children. These materials promote "respect" for the practice of sodomy. Many teachers in elementary and middle schools are trying to teach their students to accept homosexuality using words like tolerance and diversity.. Even many religious organizations are having difficulty deciding whether to allow homosexuals to be leaders in their churches. Some so-called "Christian" universities have teachers who promote gay-rights. Even though these teachers may not march in parades supporting homosexuality, they refuse to teach that homosexuality is sinful ...
Objective: To investigate HIV-testing behaviour and HIV prevalence among homosexual visitors of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) outpatient clinic, and to investigate determinants of unknown HIV status, and of HIV testing separately for men with unknown and negative HIV status.. Design: Cross-sectional survey conducted from March 2002 to December 2003 among homosexual men with negative or unknown HIV status visiting the Amsterdam STI clinic.. Methods: A convenience sample of 1201 men with negative or unknown HIV status answered a written questionnaire about history of HIV testing, sexual risk behaviour and behavioural determinants (non-response, 35%). Information was matched to the STI registration system. Associations were determined using logistic regression.. Results: 817 men reported a negative HIV status, and 384 reported an unknown HIV status. The overall HIV prevalence among the 523 men who tested at new STI consultation was 2.8%. The proportion of men with unknown HIV status was ...
Internalized homophobia is associated with sexual risk behaviour amongst HIV-positive gay and bisexual men, US research published in the journal AIDS Education and Prevention suggests. The investigators found that not being "out" as gay or bisexual was associated with non-disclosure of HIV status to non-primary sexual partners and that lower sexual comfort was associated with less confidence using condoms and unprotected anal sex with HIV-negative men or men of an unknown HIV status ...
