RIVISTA SPERIMENTALE DI FRENIATRIA - Issues in measuring and comparing the incidence of intimate partner homicide and femicide - A focus on Europe ( Intimate partner homicide is an important contributor to homicide rates worldwide, disproportionally affecting women as victims. Still, major gaps exist in the measurement of intimate partner homicide, with many homicides not being identified as intimate partner homicides. This article provides an overview of the main issues in the collection and reporting on intimate partner homicide, focusing in particular on the data situation in Europe. Sources of homicide data - national and police statistics, court statistics and files, mortuary data and newspaper databases - face similar challenges, namely absence or missing information on the victim-offender relationship, and different categorizations of key parameters, such as definition of intimate partner homicide, and identification of reporting periods. This is concerning, as strong and reliable data on the

TY - JOUR. T1 - A population-based study of homicide deaths in Ontario, Canada using linked death records. AU - Lachaud, James. AU - Donnelly, Peter D. AU - Henry, David. AU - Kornas, Kathy. AU - Calzavara, Andrew. AU - Bornbaum, Catherine. AU - Rosella, Laura. PY - 2017/7/24. Y1 - 2017/7/24. N2 - BACKGROUND: Homicide - a lethal expression of violence - has garnered little attention from public health researchers and health policy makers, despite the fact that homicides are a cause of preventable and premature death. Identifying populations at risk and the upstream determinants of homicide are important for addressing inequalities that hinder population health. This population-based study investigates the public health significance of homicides in Ontario, Canada, over the period of 1999-2012. We quantified the relative burden of homicides by comparing the socioeconomic gradient in homicides with the leading causes of death, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and neoplasm, and estimated the potential ...
Trends & issues in crime and criminal justice No. 469 March 2014 Foreword While there is a sizable body of research on intimate partner homicide in general, there has been limited focus on intimate partner
Homicide is the most extreme act of violence. Although all homicides involve death at the hands of another, homicide is in actuality a diverse group of events. Homicides can occur between strangers, acquaintances, and intimate partners; they involve a wide array of physical forces and weapons and they include many types of motivations and precipitating factors. Although diverse, homicides have some predictable characteristics that can be used to improve efforts to prevent their occurrence.. In the United States, homicide is the fourth leading cause of death for those aged 1-14, the second leading cause for those aged 15-24, and the third leading cause for those aged 25-34. In 2000, 16,765 people were the victims of homicide.. The homicide rate in the United States has fluctuated over time. After low rates in the 1950s, homicide rates reached an all-time high of 10.2 per 100,000 population in 1980. After decreasing until 1985, rates rose again to reach 9.8 per 100,000 in 1991. Since 1991, the ...
Some previous studies have found that the amount and severity of injuries in homicide victims correlate with different homicide characteristics, such as the victim-offender relationship and drug influence of the offender. If such relationships exist, they may be used by homicide investigators as part of an offender profiling.. Furthermore, injury severity may be helpful in understanding the nature of lethal violence. If the injuries change over time or differ between regions, this may say something about the underlying causes and thus help society to take preventive measures. However, measures of injury severity are often missing in homicide epidemiology. This may in part be due to a lack of standardized and accessible ways to quantify injuries in homicide victim.. To address these issues, there is a need for methods to quantify injury severity in homicide victims. The aim of the current thesis was to investigate different types of injury measures and their applicability to homicide victims. The ...
Although the sharp increase in homicide rates among US youth has begun to reverse1 as overall homicide rates among other age groups have declined in recent years,2 the public health challenge of reducing firearm fatalities is growing. Firearms account for an increasing proportion of intentional injury deaths in the US, especially among the homicides of young persons: the proportion of homicide deaths attributed to firearms among 15-34 year olds rose from 66.4% in 19851 to 79.8% in 1997,3 the most recent year for which final data are available. The proportion of suicide deaths of 15-34 year olds attributed to firearms remained stable during this same period (57.3% in 19851 and 56.8% in 19973).. Preventing firearm related deaths is a substantial challenge. Most efforts have focused on the availability or accessibility of firearms. Whether the strategy is to restrict or to increase firearm availability and accessibility,4-7 an underlying goal is to equalize force in situations with the potential ...
Since 1930, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has compiled the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) to serve as a periodic nationwide assessment of reported crimes not available elsewhere in the criminal justice system. Each year, this information is reported in four types of files: (1) Offenses Known and Clearances by Arrest, (2) Property Stolen and Recovered, (3) Supplementary Homicide Reports (SHR), and (4) Police Employee (LEOKA) Data. The Supplementary Homicide Reports provide incident-based information on criminal homicides reported to the police. These homicides consist of murders, non-negligent manslaughter, and justifiable homicides. The data, provided monthly by UCR agencies, contain information describing the victim of the homicide, the offender, and the relationship between victim and offender.. ...

Obesity is the cause of many problems. Women are more likely to be killed by an intimate partner or someone they know than by a stranger, and between 67{af1ba1a91bc861d9d4515934e2f6711ae2663fa690a84d9bc87eb568fed08e93} and 80{af1ba1a91bc861d9d4515934e2f6711ae2663fa690a84d9bc87eb568fed08e93} of intimate partner homicides involve physical abuse of a woman before the murder regardless of which partner is killed ( 43 ). Of all female homicide victims, 64{af1ba1a91bc861d9d4515934e2f6711ae2663fa690a84d9bc87eb568fed08e93} are killed by someone they know, most frequently (45{af1ba1a91bc861d9d4515934e2f6711ae2663fa690a84d9bc87eb568fed08e93}) by a spouse, former spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend ( 44 ). Firearms may also increase the probability of death in IPV incidents: Women are 5 times more likely to be killed by their abuser if he ...
For many years, most prosecutors charged only those drug-related deaths involving rival drug gang fights as being homicides. But the focus has now broadened to also examine overdose deaths as prosecutable homicides against those who sold and distributed the drugs causing the overdose. It is important to emphasize that not every death because of a drug overdose is a criminal matter. Some are suicides, and some are simply accidents. But some deaths, legally and ethically, may rise to the level of criminal homicide. These homicides may not be easily discovered, investigated, prosecuted or proven, but they still deserve attention. For that to happen, a paradigm shift in thinking by law enforcement officers and prosecutors is required, away from attitudes focusing on accident to thinking and treating overdoses as homicides.. In order to make that shift, it is important to understand and appreciate the variety of approaches available within existing statutory schemes and case law. While a handful of ...

Alice falsely believes that killing her husband Bob would be morally right (say, because Bob committed adultery). She shoots Bob, trying to hit him in the head, but misses completely and Bob escapes. Alice has committed attempted murder. But while she attempted to kill Bob, she did not attempt to murder Bob. For it was her intention to rightfully kill Bob rather than to murder him.. Therefore, attempted murder is not an attempt to murder. Speaking very carefully, we should say that Alice committed an attempted murder but did not attempt a murder. What she attempted was a killing, a killing that would have been a murder had she succeeded.. While the point is particularly clear in the case where the attempted murderer believes the killing to be right, the point also goes through in cases where the attempted murderer knows the killing would be a murder. Suppose Chuck wants to inherit an estate from his uncle Dave. Chuck knows full well that killing Dave would be a murder, and he attempts to kill ...
Data for this project was compiled from a variety of sources. To generate the homicide rate (per 100,000), homicide incident counts were obtained from HOMICIDES IN CHICAGO, 1965-1995 (ICPSR 6399). This dataset includes tract identifiers that allow for merging with other tract characteristics. The population sizes used in the denominator of the homicide rate were obtained from the decennial United States Census files for each decade from 1980-2000, and cubic spline interpolation was used to generate intercensal estimates. The homicide rate was calculated per 100,000 population. Due to a high degree of skewness in the homicide rate, the study analyses used the natural log of the homicide rate. One objective was to examine the relationships between homicide trends and various characteristics of neighborhood structure identified as relevant by the social disorganization perspective. These variables were drawn from the CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1980 [UNITED STATES]: SUMMARY TAPE FILE 3A ...

IIIDivision of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, University of Cape Town. To the Editor: Mortality is the most extreme consequence of child abuse, but it is not always conceptualised within the framework of child abuse and neglect. While undertaking research for the recent National Female and Child Homicide Study, it became apparent that medical practitioners, and especially forensic pathologists, often deviate from their legal and ethical obligations when the cause of a death raises suspicion of child abuse or neglect.. During data collection from mortuaries and police interviews, we encountered many instances where the Inquest Act[1] and the Childrens Amendment Act[2] were not adhered to. Frequently, childrens bodies had been released without a police investigation, particularly when death occurred in hospital. Whether it was assumed that a police case had been opened prior to the hospital admission, or whether the required involvement of the police had simply been forgotten, is unclear. In ...

Although women and girls account for a far smaller share of total homicides than men, they bear by far the greatest burden of intimate partner/family‐related homicide, and intimate partner homicide. Conversely, clinicians may never see a patient who has committed a homicide or serious act of interpersonal violence. Up to 10% of homicide offenders may have schizophrenia, but the annual risk that a person with schizophrenia will commit a homicide is in the region of 1 in 10 000 and that of acquiring conviction for violence is 1 in 150 (Wallace et al, 2004). The apparent paradox is because serious violence, and homicide in particular, is far rarer in our community than most realise. The annual homicide rate in the UK is about 1 in 100 000, so even a tenfold increase in risk among those with schizophrenia will not necessarily affect the individual clinician, although it most certainly will affect the community as a whole.. Minor forms of assault in schizophrenia are more common (5-15% per year), but they are often conceptualised by clinicians not as illness-related but as contextual, personality-based or intoxication-driven. The problems created by the antisocial behaviour are further obscured ...

Rabbit owners in the German towns of Witten and Dortmund are living under a pall of fear following the slaughter of 30 animals in a year-long lapine decapitation murder spree.. According to the BBC, the animals are always found headless and drained of blood. Seventy-four-year-old Elfriede Dumont explained: One morning, when I came out to feed my rabbits, I was surprised to see that the hutch door was open. I looked inside and saw Rocco just lying there. His head was missing. A little later I found Felina in the bushes. Shed been killed, too. I just cannot understand why.. Police officer Volker Schuette, having shown the shaken Beeb hack disturbing photographs of headless pet rabbits, elaborated: Its always the same. Detectives find the rabbit lying dead in a hutch. An unknown person has cut off the head and drained off the blood in a box or a bottle. So we find no blood and no head.. Police are concerned the murderer might turn his attentions to humans, and have accordingly set up a task ...

Determining the relationship between gun ownership levels and firearm homicide rates is critical to inform public health policy. Previous research has shown that state-level gun ownership, as measured by a widely used proxy, is positively associated with firearm homicide rates. A newly developed proxy measure that incorporates the hunting license rate in addition to the proportion of firearm suicides correlates more highly with state-level gun ownership. To corroborate previous research, we used this new proxy to estimate the association of state-level gun ownership with total, firearm, and non-firearm homicides. Using state-specific data for the years 1981-2010, we modelled these rates as a function of gun ownership level, controlling for potential confounding factors. We used a negative binomial regression model and accounted for clustering of observations among states. We found that state-level gun ownership as measured by the new proxy, is significantly associated with firearm and total ...
A population-based case-control study was conducted to assess the relationship between genocide exposure and homicide perpetration in Rwanda. A sample of 150 homicide perpetrators who were charged with and confessed to having committed homicide between 1 May 2011 and 31 May 2013 and 450 controls were enrolled. Cases were matched to controls by neighborhood, age and sex. Socio-demographic, background and genocide-related information was collected from study subjects next of kin. Four characteristics of genocide exposure were: genocide survivor, genocide perpetrator, having lost a first-degree relative to genocide and having a first-degree relative convicted of genocide. We assessed the impact of each genocide-exposure variable using conditional logistic regression. Of the 150 cases, 124 (82.7%) were male and 26 (17.3%) were female. The mean age of the alleged homicide perpetrators was 33 years, with a peak in the age group 20-29 years (39.3%). After adjusting for socio-demographic ...
Only two states, Alaska and South Dakota, mandate that sellers agents reveal whether a homicide or suicide occurred at a listed home within the previous 12 months, according to NAR spokesman Walter Molony. In Connecticut, Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota and Oklahoma, if a prospective buyer asks about past bloodshed, real estate agents must truthfully answer the question.. In most states, a seller isnt required to voluntarily disclose nonstructural issues such as homicides on the property, said Holden Lewis, a real estate expert at Bankrate.com, a consumer finance service. For example, he noted that Minnesota law says the seller doesnt have to disclose that the property was the location of a suicide, death or perceived paranormal activity. . In Maryland, where Betts was shot to death, agents must inform buyers only about material facts they know or should know, said Chuck Kasky, vice president of legal affairs for the Maryland Association of Realtors. When it comes to Maryland ...
While The Pump Handle is on holiday break, we are republishing some of our favorite posts from the past year. This one is from January 2016: : In the midst of another national debate over gun safety regulations, some argue that higher rates of gun ownership will protect people from dangerous strangers with deadly intentions. Physician and public health researcher Michael Siegel set out to study that argument. He ultimately found no relationship between gun ownership and stranger-related firearm homicides. But he did find that gun ownership levels translated into higher homicide risks for one group in particular - women.

Discussion. There is an enormous amount of literature in the lay press on homicide, but very few published studies; this paper is believed to be the first for this area. Mthatha was the capital city of the former black homeland of Transkei, which is now part of Eastern Cape Province - one of South Africas poorest provinces. Nature vs Narcissism is a true crime/comedy podcast based in Cincinnati, Ohio where Heather and her guests discuss true crimes and the narcissists who commit them. Sometimes we have alcohol and sometimes things get weird. In Season 1, we went down the alphabet focusing on different murderers and/or stupid criminals based on their name. For example; Episode 1 examines two notorious murderers whose names begin with the letter A. Season 2 we will go down the alphabet focusing on different serial killers/spree killers/murderers who were from or committed most of their crimes in cities/towns with each respective letter of the alphabet. For example, we may focus on someone from Cincinnati, Ohio for the letter C. Every episode is different and every episode is entertaining! We will delve into whether we think nature made the criminals commit these heinous acts, or if its simply their narcissism getting the best of them. You can like her or not (my feelings are mixed) and whether her queerness has wider relevance is arguable, but I think saying shes not an actual queer person (which is what youre implying?) is not true.. Heres me on Lady Gagas last album. I fear youll hate it, but it seemed cowardly not to include the link.. In the Twin Peaks post, it certainly wasnt my intention to say that gay people are murderers; I mean, I really, really dont think its true that gay people are any more likely to be murderers than anyone else. I think Twin Peaks is really campy in a lot of ways (I dont think thats a supercontroversial thing to say?) and camp is generally identified with queerness. I think too that Lynch is working off of the queer patriarch/murderer trope to work with other tropes about queerness. And he does explicitly make Leland the victim of a male-male sexual assault….. My point in that essay was to question the way that Twin Peaks privileges an ...
Yet another Diagnosis Murder gimmick/crossover episode. Let me explain (if youve read some of the other Diagnosis Murder pages, skip ahead as I go through the same old explanation) Diagnosis Murder started out as a sort of Murder, She Wrote knock off but even when the show premiered Murder, She Wrote had already largely wore out that find the killer format. So Diagnosis Murder started playing around to keep things interesting. They started doing shows with gimmicks to get viewers to watch. They would, for instance, have a show where all the guest stars were actors who had previously starred in popular cop shows. And sometimes they would actually have crossovers with actors playing the characters they made popular on other shows. In the episode Discards they did both. In the episode, Doctor Sloans associate Doctor Jesse Travis discovers that his father is in fact.... A SPY!!!! I hate it when that happens! Same thing happened to a friend of mine. He thought his dad was a janitor, turned out ...
Shannon Young said she worries every morning that she will get a phone call saying her husband has been murdered in prison.. My daily fear is that he is going to die, she said.. He was stabbed two months ago, Young said.. Youngs husband is incarcerated at South Central Correctional Facility in Clifton, Tn, a prison operated by CoreCivic, a for-profit company based in Nashville. CoreCivic was previously known as CCA, Corrections Corporation of America.. Alex Friedmann of the prison watchdog group Human Rights Defense Center said in the last five years, two inmates have been murdered at South Central. During a five-year period, he said, ten inmates have been killed in CoreCivic prisons. In comparison, during the same five years, he said, five inmates - half as many - were murdered at state-run prisons.. It is an inexcusable number, Friedmann said.. Adjusted for population counts, Friedmann said the homicide rate at CoreCivic facilities is four times higher than the rate for TDOC ...

LAS VEGAS - The father accused of murder has pleaded not guilty in the homicide of a Las Vegas infant in November. The Clark County Coroners office said Tuesday
Leave it to NOW to want a reeducation campaign to make Americans better understand a woman who murdered her vie children and repeatedly said she knew what she was doing was wrong.. Bell is correct, however, about the need for a public education campaign, but that campaign needs to be about child and infant murderers.. The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta released a report in early March noting that homicide was the 15th-leading cause of infant deaths in the United States. Children have a greater risk of being murdered during their first year of life than at anytime until they reach the age of 17.. Oddly enough, unlike Yates, murderers of infants rarely spend much time in jail. Typical of such killers is Melissa Drexler. On June 6, 1997, she gave birth to a baby boy in the ladies room of a catering hall where her high school prom was being held. She suffocated the newborn infant, threw the body in a trash can and returned to the prom. Drexler was released after serving just barely over 3 ...
A 66-year-old man died five days after being severely injured during an altercation Feb. 19 in Kansas City, police said Wednesday. They identified him as Robert Dunlap.
Homicide is the leading cause of death among New York City (NYC) youth aged 15-19 years (1) and the second leading cause of death among this age group nationally (2). During the 1980s, the rate of firearm-related homicide increased more rapidly among this age group than did any other cause of death (2). The 1991 national school-based Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicated that 26% of students in grades 9-12 reported carrying a weapon at least once during the 30 days preceding the survey (3). To more effectively target violence-prevention programs for youth in NYC, in 1992 the NYC Department of Health (NYCDOH), the NYC Public Schools (NYCPS), and CDC conducted a survey of violence-related attitudes and behaviors among a representative sample of NYC public high school students. This report summarizes the results of the survey. A self-administered questionnaire was given to a representative sample of 9th-12th grade students in the NYCPS during June 1992. The sampling frame included all academic, ...
Gun control is an issue surrounded by (some would say submerged in) myth and misunderstanding. We present here ten myths that are most frequently raised . . . and, from our perspective, most commonly misunderstood.. Myth No. 1: Guns cause crime. A review of the academic literature shows that there is no relationship between the number of guns and the amount of crime in the United States. Criminologists Gary Kleck and E. Britt Patterson reported in 1993 their finding that gun ownership had no significant effect on the rates of murder, assault, robbery, or rape in the U.S. Between 1973 and 1992, the rate of gun ownership in the U.S. increased by 45 percent (from 610 guns per 1,000 people to 887). The homicide rate during that period fell by nearly 10 percent (from 9.4 homicides per 100,000 people to 8.5).. Myth No. 2: Gun control laws reduce crime. Firearms have been regulated with increasing stringency in the United States for most of the past thirty years. Nevertheless, the number of firearms in ...

Obviously, many factors contributed to the citys health crises of the 1980s. We have focused on the role of public policy because unlike social and economic trends, which appear difficult to change in the short or middle run, policies can and do change. Identifying the types of decisions that harmed health in the past may make it possible to advocate different approaches in the future. Similarly, examining policies that contributed to several adverse health outcomes-in this case the TB, HIV, and homicide syndemic-may make it possible to suggest more efficient approaches to policy advocacy and to frame policy messages that resonate in the current political climate. As city, state, and federal governments again face deficits and propose deep cuts in services, it seems particularly urgent to avoid a repetition of the 1975 decisions that so damaged New York Citys health.. Our historical health impact assessment demonstrates several pathways by which these policy decisions exacerbated the syndemic. ...
