Abstract Abstract:. The aim of this article is to discuss the history of the Independence of Brazil by highlighting the historiographical approaches from the so-called History of Concepts, which in the current Brazilian historiography are related to a German intellectual branch, but often articulated to other approaches that can be referred to as intellectual history, history of languages and of political discourses. It offers a brief overview of the historiography of Independence in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, through to the diagnosis of their basic lineages, then it discusses current conceptual approaches. The conclusion indicates five points to contribute to a better understanding of the Independence of Brazil.. ...

Explained Dr. James Lynch, president, Beaumont, Grosse Pointe, A hybrid surgical suite, or operating room, is larger than traditional operating rooms and combines surgical equipment, tables, lights with fixed advanced imaging systems. Surgical teams have the capability to perform a wide array of procedures ranging from a traditional open approach to a minimally invasive procedure. The hybrid suite will include a C-arm imaging system which rotates to provide front, back and lateral views. It provides real-time, live views throughout the surgery, allowing clinicians to compare what they see before, during and after a procedure. In keeping with Beaumonts commitment to academic excellence, larger operating rooms permit medical students, residents and fellows an opportunity to observe and take part in procedures. When complete, the hybrid suite will enable our surgeons to quickly and efficiently move between minimally invasive and traditional surgeries, said Dr. Nick Gilpin, chief medical ...

For those who are living in the south of the UK, might know what this is about, or for some who are not, will find out in this discussion. A moment ago, I had a strange thought after I fully watch Alice Through the Looking Glass and I thought, What would happen if Alice (Kathryn Beaumont or Mia Wasikowska) and Hatter (Johnny Depp) payed a visit to Adventure Wonderland in the South of England? For some who are curious about this place called Adventure Wonderland, itll be a good time for me to tell you, after all I know everything there. When I first visited there, it was named The Alice in Wonderland Theme Park and from there, the rides were all connected to the story (Ill go through the rides later), now as I take myself back to the present day, it has a change of name called Adventure Wonderland and it still has everything from before even the park has the same story theme. Now, let me go through the rides and attractions to what either Kathryn Beaumont, Mia Wasikowska or Johnny ...

The historiography of the British Empire refers to the studies, sources, critical methods and interpretations used by scholars to develop a history of Britains empire. Historians and their ideas are the focus here; specific lands and historical dates and episodes are covered in the article on the British Empire. Scholars have long studied the Empire, looking at the causes for its formation, its relations to the French and other empires, and the kinds of people who became imperialists or anti-imperialists, together with their mindsets. The history of the breakdown of the Empire has attracted scholars of the histories of the United States (which broke away in 1776), India (independent in 1947), and the African colonies (independent in the 1960s). John Darwin (2013) identifies four imperial goals: colonizing, civilizing, converting, and commerce. Historians have approached imperial history from numerous angles over the last century. In recent decades scholars have expanded the range of topics into ...

Since Professor Hampton announced the death of clinical freedom in 1983, the increasing influence of Evidence-based Medicine and Health Technology Assessment has contributed to augment the feeling that clinicians have a secondary role in the therapeutic decision-making process. This article constitutes a reflection on how clinicians may use the results of economic evaluations in their daily clinical practice, making decisions about cost-effectiveness on a case by case basis, and addressing both the patients and societys needs. To that end, some illustrating examples are taken from the literature to show there are factors with great impact on cost-effectiveness results that can be easily identified and modified by clinicians. The evolution of the discipline and the trend towards a tailored therapy suggest that health economics is not the end of clinical freedom but the start of it.
By Catholic News Service • Posted March 6, 2014 PEORIA, Ill. (CNS) - A seven-member team of medical experts convoked by the Vatican reported there is no natural explanation for the survival of a child delivered stillborn and whose heart did not start beating until 61 minutes after his birth.. The survival of the child, James Fulton Engstrom, now 3 years old and developing normally, was credited by his parents to a miracle attributable to the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, a Peoria diocesan priest who gained fame for his 1950s television show Life Is Worth Living and his 16 years at the helm of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.. The medical experts report was announced March 6 in Peoria by the Archbishop Fulton Sheen Foundation, which is headed by Bishop Daniel R. Jenky of Peoria.. Today is a significant step in the cause for the beatification and canonization of our beloved Fulton Sheen, Bishop Jenky said in a statement. There are many more steps ahead and more ...

Janna Fulbright, public relations director at Spindletop Center, said acts of violence by those suffering mental health issues are rare. The hope for mental health professionals is to be able to help patients cope with and handle situations before the problems escalate. Family members of Jason Richard said hed recently fallen on hard times, and described him as in a bad mental state before he apparently committed suicide at his home on Jackson Street. Medical and financial problems were to blame for the stress he felt, a relative said at the scene. Beaumont Police Departments Sgt. Rob Flores said one of the issues facing law enforcement is the persistent nature of the mental health problems some people face. In some cases, if someone who traditionally suffered from depression brightens up significantly, it can indicate a resolution to attempt suicide or anticipation of a foreseeable end.

All individuals who are affected by FXS require speech and language therapy and occupational therapy, usually with a sensory integration approach. These therapies stimulate and improve motor and language development. In children who have more severe motor problems, treatment by a physical therapist also is necessary.. Most children affected by FXS also will require special education support in school, including individual and/or group tutoring to help academic progress. Children with FXS often have difficulty with math and, sometimes, spelling and reading. Most children can be mainstreamed into a regular classroom; however, they may require an aide to modify regular classroom assignments and to help them complete work.. Medications can be helpful for treating behavior and emotional problems. The use of stimulant medication, such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) and dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine or Adderall), are helpful for the majority of children with FXS who have significant hyperactivity, short ...

Kimberly VanSlembrouck is grateful for the $144 million jury verdict against William Beaumont Hospital thatll ensure her brain-injured daughter gets the care she needs for life.. The lawsuit was filed in 2006 on behalf of Markell VanSlembrouck who is now 15. She suffered severe brain injuries at the Royal Oak hospital during birth because a cesarean should have been performed on Kimberly. But instead, the 10-pound, 12-ounce Markell VanSlembrouch was forced through the birth canal, thus causing her to suffer a fractured clavicle, hemorrhaging and severe brain trauma.. The civil jury consisted of eight members. They reached this verdict Tuesday after three days of deliberations in the three-week trial in Oakland County Circuit Court.. The hospital disagrees with the jurys verdict and plans an appeal claiming the injuries are genetic.. The exact type of brain trauma that Markell now suffers with was not mentioned. Although some of the most common birth injuries include cerebral palsy and its ...
Colic can be one of the major stresses in child rearing. The colicky infant usually cries for at least several hours a day, more often in the late afternoon and early evening hours. It begins in the first few weeks of life, peaks in the fourth to sixth week, and then typically resolves by the third or fourth month of life. Your child may display sudden and intense crying which is accompanied by stiffening, drawing up of the legs, and passing of gas.. Cause. The cause of colic is unknown. Although many people assume that it is a result of intestinal pain, the cause seems to vary with each infant. Air swallowing, immaturity of the intestinal tract, immaturity of the nervous system, a hypersensitivity to a protein in cows milk, a sensitivity to environmental stimuli, and low progesterone have all been suggested as possible factors.. What to do about Colic Dont Blame Yourself. It is natural to become frustrated and angry over a child who wont stop crying. Some parents will begin to question their ...

The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labradors English School District (NLESD, which controls all but six schools in the province) has formally brought an end to the Operation Christmas Child (OCC) shoebox appeal operating in its schools, citing concerns over the homophobia and extreme religious views in Samaritans Purse, the charity which runs the scheme. Humanists UK, which for many years has drawn parents attention to issues around religious proselytising through OCC, has welcomed the news.. In October, Humanists UK urged its members to write to schools about the appeal, pointing out that many parents and teachers dont know that OCC uses families charitable donations as a missionary tool for converting people to Christianity. Humanists UK also promotes a list of ethical alternatives to the OCC scheme for parents and teachers who still want to engage children in charitable giving around the holiday season.. District trustees for NLESD voted at a public meeting in late November to ...
Howe, Müller, and Stonemans Ancient Historiography on War and Empire is the product of a 2013 conference on Greek history and historiography and includes chapters that form sections devoted to Classical Greece and Achaemenid Persia, Macedon, Alexander and the Diadochoi, and the Second Sophistic. Presumably these divisions indicate the various conference panels from which the papers had their genesis. As with all edited volumes of such breadth, the individual contributions present a wide variety of specific topics and approaches. The golden thread theoretically running through all of them is that they all variously explore the ways in which the ancient authors contemporary contexts and the perceived needs and desires of their audiences affected their presentation of history. This was serious business. As Howe notes in his foreword, the ancient historians tendencies towards either propaganda or didacticism were impelled by war and its uncompromising consequences… as they sought to shape ...

And yet, on closer inspection, medical humanities is a poorly definedfield-admirable in impulse but often confused about follow through. While the term humanitiesin this context suggests a set of intellectual commitments; in the medical humanities it refers instead to a vaguely articulated interest in humanity. Humanities students read poems to sharpen creative analytical skills, while in the medical humanities students read poetry to explore their personal feelings and to develop emotional intelligence. Humanists have been complicit in this confusion-even welcomed it. Faced with the so-called crisis in the humanitiesand seeking ways to make the humanities appear useful, many embrace medicines uncertainty about what humanities do, loudly proclaiming the capacity of literature, art history, religion, and philosophy to make doctors more caring people. JTA) - Anyone teaching the past by skipping over the unpleasant parts isnt teaching history. They are engaged in propaganda.. Jewish tradition understands this: Refusing to sugarcoat their own peoples culpability, the Sages themselves teach that the destruction of the Temple by the Romans is a consequence of baseless hatred - among Jews.. Yet in nearly two dozen states, the movement to impose restrictions on the teaching of history is gaining momentum. Incited by a national hysteria over critical race theory, advocates of these educational fatwas are borrowing a page from authoritarian governments like Vladimir Putins Russia in a clumsy effort to avoid discussing the messy, controversial and painful moments in Americas history. And as a professional historian, I can tell you that these bans will be terrible for anyone teaching or studying Jewish history.. What exactly is critical race theory, and how is it apparently - in the words of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican who is seen as ...

Typically, we approach the human body from a medical, diagnostic model. But physicians have long recognized that this approach to health and well-being is not sufficient for understanding our somatic life. The cross disciplinary minor in medical humanities provides students with a humanistic and social study of illness, health and the body. Drawing upon concepts found in the disciplines contributing to the minor, courses in the curriculum share the common focus of examining how individuals and institutions articulate and disseminate conceptions of the body, including constituent issues such as race, ethnicity, sexuality and gender. Designed to complement any major, the goals of the medical humanities minor include helping students: ...
Neo-Cols. Based on 9/11, the United States invades Iraq and Afghanistan.. The 21st century word for this is war on terrorism. The 19th century word for it was colonialism.. Teaching history has fallen out of fashion. Boring stuff, right? A bunch of old guys and too many dates to remember, but Americans have a long and not-so-proud history of toppling the governments of smaller nations when corporate interests are concerned.. Recently a conservative pundit -- I am not sure if we are suppose to take her seriously, or if shes just a female version of Andrew Dice Clay -- suggested whats wrong with stealing oil and she went on to suggest oil provides jet fuel to bring cocaine to Hollywood moguls. Now theres a stretch if there ever was one!. And speaking of cocaine, the United States toppled the government of the unsavory Manuel Noriega because he was a drug lord. And the Panama Canal? Oh, we stole it fair and square, for a second time, not less, say Neo-cons/Neo-cols with a grin.. But the ...
It was outrageous to me that the adults would cave to the intimidation. My passion for not backing down was as a student broadcast journalist and the lessons Id learned making our first film, We Must Remember. In response to that film, it was white supremacists who were angry and contacting us, but we didnt drop the project. The documentary was about American teens who discover the horrors of the Holocaust first hand by interviewing survivors, traveling to several concentration camps in Europe, and interviewing German teens with Nazi grandparents. The Academy Award winning producer for Schindlers List, Branko Lustig, took our team to Croatia for the international premiere. There the filmmakers had the opportunity to speak to Serbian, Muslim, and Croatian teens about the lesson we learned. We Must Remember was made to promote tolerance and alert people to the dangers of bullying, while teaching history from a peer-to-peer approach. How could we back down from a topic because of bullying after ...

Painful periods can arise from a number of causes: In Western medical theory, the main reason for menstrual cramps is that the levels of prostaglandins (a hormone-like substance that promotes uterine contractions) and other sexual hormones become imbalanced, which leads to over-contraction of the uterus. (As with any gynecological pain, it is important to start with a pelvic exam to rule out more serious causes, such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or cervical stenosis.). Stress may also play a large part in menstrual cramps. In Chinese medical theory, the Liver system is closely related to the emotions. Two of the most important functions of the Liver for women are storing the Blood, and smoothing the emotions. If the Liver function is impaired, this will cause what is known as Liver Qi congestion. Stress, anger, and irritability are the emotions that manifest with this congestion. And in Chinese medicine, the Qi (life force energy) rules the free ...
The website of the Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kansas, is an access portal for oral histories of the administration that are available through multiple institutions, primarily the Eisenhower Library, the Columbia University Oral History Project, as well as other libraries with smaller collections. The library website provides detailed abstracts of linked interviews, but in most cases researchers must visit the repositories to access transcripts for audio files. (A limited number of transcripts are available online.) The full list of interviews is available at the Eisenhower librarys oral history page.. An initial survey reveals nineteen interviews with abstracts or transcripts available through the Eisenhower library that contain significant content pertaining to regulatory issues. These interviews provide a window on the evolution of the post-war American regulatory state, with particular attention to global contexts, including the Cold War, the Korean war, the development of the European ...
The Maghrebi tradition of historical literary production extends back to the early centuries of Islamic expansion and conquest in North Africa and comprises a rich corpus including dynastic chronicles (tarikh), biographies (tarajim), and hagiographies (manaqib/rijjal), and, since the 20th century, positivist national histories as well. While this tradition had evolved since its inception, 19th- and 20th-century Maghrebi historical production both influenced and was influenced by the extension of European military, economic, and political power into the Maghreb. Grappling with the legacies of colonialism, nationalism, and pan-Arabism, among others, Maghrebi historians continue to sow the rich terrain of historical literary production in the postcolonial period by absorbing, reacting to, and building upon new trends in the historical profession.
Clearly more research is required to find effective methods to better manage the pain and debilitation of pudendal neuralgia. But in the meantime, friends and family close to those who have this devastating illness play a huge role in helping patients cope, thereby maintaining the best quality of life possible.
