The number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes is projected to double over the next fifty years (qtd. in Geiss and Cowie 25). The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 90-95% of all diabetes cases are type 2. Ethnic populations, particularly Hispanic Americans, are disproportionately affected by diabetes. Numerous clinical trials have proven that the onset of type 2 diabetes can be prevented through moderate exercise and a balanced diet (qtd. in Dabelea et al. 39). Culturally relevant prevention strategies can improve the effectiveness of type 2 diabetes prevention campaigns attempting to reach Hispanic Americans. ❧ In 2010, 87% of English-speaking Hispanic Americans (Smith), 78% of bilingual Hispanic Americans and 68% of Spanish dominant Hispanic Americans reported having a cell phone (Livingston). Hispanic Americans have widely adopted mobile phone technology to access the Internet, SMS text messaging, videos, email and social networks (Smith). Mobile health communication ...
Shonnie Pochardt, whose life and death is highlighted in Wheelwrights book, discovered a lump in her breast years before she was diagnosed. But, as her family told The Denver Post in 2003, her doctor told her she was too young to have breast cancer. Since the genetic mutation has been documented, the awareness among physicians has grown, said Angela Bedard, a genetic counselor and head of the oncology department at the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa.. The knowledge is growing and women at younger ages are being sent for screening, Bedard said.. Now, it is often the women themselves who arent acknowledging the risks.. We still see women of the San Luis Valley being diagnosed at later stages, in their disease, Bedard said. These women are just not doing the screening at rates that are needed. All women need mamograms and cancer screening, but even among those whose family history increases their risk, there is resistance, she said.. Quirk of heritage. Cost is a factor. ...

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are major causes of mortality among U.S. Hispanic/Latino farmworkers. Since Hispanics/Latinos, in general, are twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to have elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT), a biomarker of suspected nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, it is vital to understand the CVD risk factor-ALT relationship in Hispanic/Latino farmworkers. This study investigated the elevated ALT status in Hispanic/Latino farmworkers and the relationships between ALT and CVD risk markers. Methods: In 210 Hispanic/Latino farmworkers (48% female; aged 35.2 ± 9.2 years), fasting blood samples were measured for serum ALT, and elevated ALT was defined by | 43 U/L. CVD risk markers were measured with standard methods and defined according to the definitions of metabolic syndrome. Results: The overall prevalence for elevated ALT was 12.4%. Significant linear upward trends across tertiles of serum ALT were observed for body mass index, waist circumference, fasting glucose

Hispanic Americans face greater challenges in obtaining a secure retirement than the U.S. population at large, according to a new report, Hispanics and Retirement: Challenges and Opportunities. Compared to other Americans, Hispanics are more likely to confront a low level of retirement preparation, low access to employer-sponsored retirement plans, low levels of personal savings and inadequate financial literacy, according to the not-for-profit Hispanic Institute and the Americans for Secure Retirement (ASR) coalition.. The report concludes that Hispanic Americans need to consider multiple retirement vehicles to supplement Social Security and to bridge the gap in access to employer plans. While our research found that Hispanics face greater challenges in preparing for retirement than the average population, with the right tools to properly prepare for retirement, these obstacles can be overcome, says Gus West, board of directors chair for the Hispanic Institute.. Significant findings of the ...

NORTH CAROLINA PRAMS FACT SHEET October 2010 North Carolina Latina Maternal Health 2004- 2007 N. C. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System ( PRAMS) North Carolina has a sizable Latino population. Since 1990, the size of the Latino population has more than quadrupled in the state. According to 2007 estimates, North Carolinas resident Latino population was 637,379; representing approximately 7 percent of the states population. Over half ( 52%) of the Latino population falls in the childbearing ages of 15 to 44, compared with only 41 percent of the non- Latino residents of the state. 1 Births to Latina mothers have also risen substantially during this time period. In 1990, Latinos accounted for less than 2 percent ( 1.68%) of all resident births. By 2007, Latinos comprised approximately 17 percent of all North Carolina resident births. The overall birth rate per 1,000 for Latina mothers ages 15- 44 in North Carolina in 2007 was 167.5, compared with a rate of 62.2 for non- Latina women. 2 ...

By Dr. Jose Castillo-Mancilla. Hispanic/Latinos are the fastest growing minority ethnic group in the United States, accounting for 17 percent of the current population. This is projected to increase to 31 percent by 2060. As we celebrate the National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, it is time to think about how HIV/AIDS affects the Hispanic/Latino community in the US and what can you do to stop it.. The CDC indicates that more than 95,000 U.S. Hispanic/Latinos have died of HIV/AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic, and that this disease continues to affect us disproportionately. About 20 percent of the new HIV infections occur in individuals of Hispanic/Latino ethnicity, both men and women, and the lifetime likelihood of being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in is higher for Hispanic/Latinos compared to whites. This also translates into a much more advanced disease stage once the diagnosis is made, which is fueled by factors such as lack of healthcare access, health illiteracy, poverty, stigma and ...
Approach and Results-We studied 8367 Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos participants who were 45 to 74 years of age. Sleep symptoms were examined with the self-reported Sleep Health Questionnaire. SA was assessed using an in-home sleep study. Systolic blood pressure was measured in all extremities to compute the ankle-brachial index. PAD was defined as ankle-brachial index ,0.90 in either leg. Multivariable logistic regression was used to investigate the association between moderate-to-severe SA, defined as apnea-hypopnea index ≥15, and the presence of PAD. Analyses were adjusted for covariates. The prevalence of PAD was 4.7% (n=390). The mean apnea-hypopnea index was significantly higher among adults with PAD compared with those without (11.1 versus 8.6 events/h; P=0.046). After adjusting for covariates, moderate-to-severe SA was associated with a 70% increase in the odds of PAD (odds ratio, 1.7; 95% confidence interval, 1.1-2.5; P=0.0152). This association was not modified by ...
Blanca Peak is prominent in the Sierra Blanca at the southern end of the northernmost section of the mountains, which is known as the Sangre de Cristo Range. There are several passes, with elevations between 9,000 and 10,000 feet (2,700 and 3,000 m), giving access to the valley. North La Veta Pass, through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is used by U.S. Highway 160 and by the San Luis and Rio Grande Railroad (formerly a branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western) tracks. Other passes used historically were Medano, Mosca and Sangre de Cristo Passes. The Great Sand Dunes are a famous feature of the valley. They lie directly to the west of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The dunes can reach 750 feet (230 m) high. The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is now in place to protect both the dunes and the numerous archeological sites found in the area. The natural valley aquifer is close to the surface in this part of the valley, and helps with maintenance of water levels in the San Luis Lakes, ...

Gene expression profiling of 207 uniformly treated children with high-risk B-progenitor acute lymphoblastic leukemia revealed 29 of 207 cases (14%) with markedly elevated expression of CRLF2 (cytokine receptor-like factor 2). Each of the 29 cases harbored a genomic rearrangement of CRLF2: 18 of 29 (62%) had a translocation of the immunoglobulin heavy chain gene IGH@ on 14q32 to CRLF2 in the pseudoautosomal region 1 of Xp22.3/Yp11.3, whereas 10 (34%) cases had a 320-kb interstitial deletion centromeric of CRLF2, resulting in a P2RY8-CRLF2 fusion. One case had both IGH@-CRLF2 and P2RY8-CRLF2, and another had a novel CRLF2 rearrangement. Only 2 of 29 cases were Down syndrome. CRLF2 rearrangements were significantly associated with activating mutations of JAK1 or JAK2, deletion or mutation of IKZF1, and Hispanic/Latino ethnicity (Fisher exact test, P < .001 for each). Within this cohort, patients with CRLF2 rearrangements had extremely poor treatment outcomes compared with those without CRLF2 ...

Abdominal obesity and insulin resistance (IR) place youth at higher risk for premature cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the underlying mechanisms are not clear. In adults, abdominal obesity and IR contribute to the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Whether similar mechanisms are operational in Latino adolescents is unknown. Therefore, we determined whether IR and abdominal adiposity are associated with higher oxLDL concentrations in Latino adolescents. Data from 123 Latino adolescents (16.3 ± 2.5 years; female = 74) were used for the present analysis. Participants were assessed for waist circumference, fasting serum oxLDL, and insulin sensitivity by the whole body insulin sensitivity index. In separate linear regression models adjusting for age and sex, both waist circumference and insulin sensitivity were significant predictors of oxLDL (β = 1.9; p = 0.002; R2 = 0.13, β = -1.7; p = 0.006; R2 = 0.11, respectively). When insulin sensitivity and waist circumference were included in the same

Awarded city status in July 1958, San Luis Rio Colorado serves as the administrative center for the surrounding municipality of the same name. The city is located on a mesa, characterized by a flat and sandy terrain. On Easter Sunday 2010, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the region. The Sears department store and 5 schools were destroyed, affecting approximately 30,000 people in the region. San Luis Rio Colorado was once an important inland port for steamers traveling the Colorado from the Gulf of California. Since the early 1900s the Colorado has been completely or nearly completely drained for irrigation. The once-formidable Colorado is usually dry or a small stream. San Luis Rio Colorado is home to four regional medium-wave radio broadcast stations, among them 1350 XELBL-AM, all of which are popular long-distance reception targets for medium wave DX radio enthusiasts. The proposed research will include adolescent and young adult Hispanic/Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual men and women, aged 13-24 years, and will be based at 13 ATN Adolescent Medicine Trial Units (AMTUs) that provide clinical care and psychosocial services to the target group. In 10 of the 13 sites, comparisons will be made between alternative venue-based testing (AVT) and social and sexual network-based interviewing and HIV testing (SSNIT) strategies to assess which, among these approaches, is the most effective means for identifying undiagnosed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in young, at-risk Hispanics/Latinos. Three of the sites will focus solely on use of SSNIT for identifying undiagnosed HIV in our target group of adolescents and young adults. All study participants will complete an audio computer-assisted self-interview (ACASI) and undergo HIV screening. Participants with presumptive HIV positive screening results will be referred to the local AMTU for ...

Purpose:This dissertation examined the roles of 1) motivation for healthy dietary habits, and 2) the meanings of eating behavior on dietary intake in Latino youth. Multiple objectives were addressed in the three studies that comprised this dissertation. Study 1 identified the affective meanings of dietary intake among minority children, developed factor items for the Meanings of Eating Index (MEI), validated the MEI, and explored whether the meanings identified were related to healthy (or unhealthy) dietary behavior in Latino youth. Study 2 examined the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for eating fruits and vegetables on dietary intake at baseline and on changes in dietary intake between baseline and follow-up in a randomized controlled trial in overweight Latina adolescents. Study 3 investigated whether motivation and the meanings of eating uniquely contributed to fruit and vegetable consumption in a predominantly Latino sample of elementary school children.; Methods:The ...
A short HIV-to-AIDS interval can indicate a delay in testing until late in the course of HIV disease, when symptoms are likely to have developed. It also may reflect inadequate care and treatment for Hispanics who may not be getting antiretroviral treatment at an earlier stage in their infection when medication could produce better health outcomes. Hispanics unaware of their infection are not able to take advantage of the therapies that can keep them healthy and extend their lives, nor do they have the knowledge to protect their sex or drug-use partners from becoming infected. HIV-infected persons who are unaware of their infection do not reduce risk behaviors and may unknowingly transmit the virus to others.26 The percentage of Hispanics with a short HIV-to-AIDS interval varied by place of birth and was larger among foreign-born Hispanics compared with US-born Hispanics. The barriers of language, lack of knowledge, and lack of health insurance have been obstacles to care and may be more ...

Lori Saldaña (photo, right), former State Legislator posted on Facebook, Heres the thing people need to understand about San Diego County: Latinos are 33% of the population and 60% of the COVID cases IDd so far.. Saldaña and other Latino advocates are raising serious concerns over the dangers posed by COVID-19 to Latino and Hispanic community members locally compared to the white majority. Why are Latinos locally suffering disproportionate rates of COVID-19 cases and mortalities?. One likely reason is that many Latinos are essential workers in jobs with frequent contact with the public, such as employees in grocery stores, hotels and medical facilities. Others have toiled in jobs that prior to recent orders, lacked social distancing and masks, such as farmworkers harvesting crops.. Estela de los Rios, a Latina community leader in El Cajon, believes reopening of restaurants and retail locally has occurred too soon. She voices concerns over minority workers forced to return to jobs and ...

Our findings present a strong case that the high prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in Latinos is due in part to genes of Native American origin, said Xiaoyi Gao, associate professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a corresponding author on the study.. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects blood vessels in the retina. Latinos are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than non-Hispanic Whites and have a higher prevalence of diabetic retinopathy. While several lifestyle and dietary factors have been blamed for higher rates of diabetes among Latinos, Gao and his colleagues wanted to see if genetic ancestry was associated with the development of diabetic retinopathy.. Gao and his colleagues analyzed DNA from participants in the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES), the largest population-based ...

Latinos are the fastest growing minority population in the United States (U.S.) and have the worst access to health care of any ethnic group. The chronic disease of diabetes is twice as common in adult Latinos as in non-Latino whites, and the risk of death related to diabetes is twofold. Reasons for this disparity have yet to be clearly identified. This study had two purposes: 1) to explore cultural beliefs regarding health-care seeking behaviors in Puerto Ricans with diabetes who live in South Florida; and 2) to examine Puerto Ricans perceptions about their health-care providers. The cultural phenomena of interest were familism, religiosity, spirituality, use of ethnomedicine, and perception of ethnic concordance of health-care provider. Numerous studies have examined these phenomena with other Latino groups, but none have specifically focused on Puerto Ricans. On what they talk about:. Favela: The election was a big topic for us. Sometimes we talk about our favorite movies. We talk about our issues with health. One of my favorite episodes we did was a music episode where we choose our favorite music of 2016. On why they talk about personal topics:. Favela: I think its important to talk to your friends about issues out loud and Babelito is my best friend. So this is something you would normally talk about. When I stress out, I binge eat. And thats what we talked about on the show.. On whether what they talk about extends to the whole Latino community:. Ortega: We dont want to be the voice of the Latino community. In fact, one of the missions that we set out in the beginning is not just to complain about the problems in the Latino community but highlight the ...
We tested 32 routine clinical parameters for their ability to discriminate between a high risk and a low risk of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) within 5-7 years after pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Latino women (n = 671) with GDM who did not have diabetes 4-16 weeks after delivery returned for at least one 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) within 7.5 years. Multivariate analysis was used to identify parameters ascertained during or immediately after the index pregnancy that were independently associated with the development of diabetes during follow-up. Life table analysis revealed a 47% cumulative incidence rate of NIDDM 5 years after delivery for this cohort of patients who did not have diabetes at the initial postpartum examination. Four variables were identified as independent predictors of NIDDM: the area under the OGTT glucose curve at 4-16 weeks postpartum, the gestational age at the time of diagnosis of GDM, the area under the OGTT ...

Crowley, who has been in Congress since 1999, is the No. 4 Democrat in the House and was widely viewed as an eventual successor to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Though he was a stalwart progressive on nearly every issue, he also had close ties to Wall Street. This made him a formidable fundraiser, something that Ocasio-Cortez turned against Crowley in the primary. She eventually fundraised about $600,000 through small-dollar donors.. Crowley outspent his primary opponent 5-to-1, but hes a heterosexual white male and shes a Puerto Rican woman who labeled him a symbol of the political patriarchy. Having made identity politics the basis of their last three presidential campaigns - the first black president, then the first female (almost) president - Democrats have been taken over by intersectionality and candidates spewing the kind of jargon you used to have to take a college Gender Studies class to learn.. ...

Not all Latinos face the same health challenges, suggesting that public health approaches may need to be tailored based on needs of the diverse groups within the Latino population, new research from Oregon State University indicates.
NLM will be promoting the infoSIDA Web site through a multi-platform media outreach effort that includes two new radio public service announcements that will air on Spanish media outlets nationwide. In addition, Ms. Fedora Braverman, a librarian with the NLM Public Services Division, will take part in a June 1st broadcast of Bienvenidos a América, discussing infoSIDA and other Spanish-language consumer resources from NLM. Bienvenidos a América (BAA) is a weekly call-in radio show focused on providing Spanish preferred Latinos with information and resources specific to immigration issues. Since this programs audience is a key component in determining the success of this campaign, NLM will utilize this program, which airs on 111 Spanish radio stations nationwide. In addition to being on the air, the NLM specific segment on BAA will be streamed and made available online at bienvenidosradio.com. The online resources of infoSIDA will also be publicized and made available via NLMs social media ...
Latino Community in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area (3) This course takes an in-depth look at the Latino community, numbering about 13 percent of the population in the Washington, DC metropolitan region. Students examine the historical and political factors that brought a massive migration of Central Americans to the DC area in the 1980s and bring it forward to the current period when unaccompanied minors fleeing violence in Central America who reached the US/Mexico border are being reunited with family members in this region. The violence they fled, their journeys, and the challenges faced locally are explored. Students analyze and research the critical issues that affect Latinos today, such as immigration status, affordable housing, educational access, employment, cultural identity and mental health issues. Through community-based learning (also known as service-learning) with local nonprofit community agencies, students deepen their learning of these issues. A neighborhood visit to Mt ...

Hispanic/Latino populations possess a complex genetic structure that reflects recent admixture among and potentially ancient substructure within Native American, European, and West African source populations. Here, we quantify genome-wide patterns of SNP and haplotype variation among 100 individuals with ancestry from Ecuador, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic genotyped on the Illumina 610-Quad arrays and 112 Mexicans genotyped on Affymetrix 500K platform. Intersecting these data with previously collected high-density SNP data from 4,305 individuals, we use principal component analysis and clustering methods FRAPPE and STRUCTURE to investigate genome-wide patterns of African, European, and Native American population structure within and among Hispanic/Latino populations. Comparing autosomal, X and Y chromosome, and mtDNA variation, we find evidence of a significant sex bias in admixture proportions consistent with disproportionate contribution of European male and Native American ...

In keeping with findings from previous studies of US adults, we found that both non-Hispanic whites and Hispanics failed to meet Healthy People 2010 targets for consumption of both fruits and vegetables. Although more Hispanics than non-Hispanic whites met the fruit objective (+5.6%), more non-Hispanic whites than Hispanics met the vegetable objective (−9.6%).. Our results indicated that more Spanish-speaking Hispanics met the fruit objective than did English-speaking Hispanics (+6.3%). The acculturation effect on fruit consumption, as measured by survey language preference, was strengthened following adjustment for sociodemographic variables in regression models. The findings for lower fruit consumption among English-speaking Hispanics are similar to those from the National Cancer Institute 7-item fruit and vegetable screener, which indicated that greater language acculturation among Mexican-American women was associated with significantly decreased fruit consumption (11).. Conversely, fewer ...

A San Luis Obispo firefighter who put one man in the hospital during a wedding after-party earlier this month, allegedly bashed another man over the head with a full bottle of champagne during a 1997 wedding in Los Osos. CalCoastNews has interviewed more than a dozen eyewitnesses of several attacks allegedly perpetrated by San Luis Obispo firefighter John Ryan Mason, 34. However, because of fear of Mason or worry over retribution, many have asked to have their names withheld. However, several members of law enforcement confirm the alleged assaults resulted in 911 calls.
DOI: https://doi.org/10.3945/cdn.117.001115 Interpretive Summary: Polyphenols are natural plant products found in fruits, vegetables, coffee, tea, wine and chocolate that might help reduce body weight and body fat. Hispanics/Latinos have high rate of obesity but little is known how polyphenols might relate to their body mass index and body fat. We recruited 442 Hispanics/Latinos into the study at four study sites: Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; Bronx, New York; and San Diego, California. In the study, we measured their body mass index based on weight and height and their body fat using a standard stable isotope dilution method. Their polyphenol intakes were based on the amounts of polyphenols found in their urine samples collected over a 24-hour period. The study showed that for every 50% increase in one of the polyphenols, urolithin A, there was a 0.4-unit decrease in body mass index. For every 50% increase in two of the polyphenols, resveratrol and urolithin A, there was a 1% and 0.4% ...

Using 104 ancestry informative markers, we examined spouse correlations in genetic ancestry for Mexican spouse pairs recruited from Mexico City and the San Francisco Bay Area, and Puerto Rican spouse pairs recruited from Puerto Rico and New York City. In the Mexican pairs, we found strong spouse correlations for European and Native American ancestry, but no correlation in African ancestry. In the Puerto Rican pairs, we found significant spouse correlations for African ancestry and European ancestry but not Native American ancestry. Correlations were not attributable to variation in socioeconomic status or geographic heterogeneity. Past evidence of spouse correlation was also seen in the strong evidence of linkage disequilibrium between unlinked markers, which was accounted for in regression analysis by ancestral allele frequency difference at the pair of markers (European versus Native American for Mexicans, European versus African for Puerto Ricans). We also observed an excess of homozygosity ...

Results Of 373 563 women with invasive breast cancer, 268 675 (71.9%) were non-Hispanic white; 34 928 (9.4%), Hispanic white; 38 751 (10.4%), black; 25 211 (6.7%), Asian; and 5998 (1.6%), other ethnicities. Mean follow-up time was 40.6 months (median, 38 months). Compared with non-Hispanic white women diagnosed with stage I breast cancer (50.8%), Japanese women (56.1%) were more likely to be diagnosed (OR, 1.23 [95% CI, 1.15-1.31], P , .001) and black women (37.0%) were less likely to be diagnosed (OR, 0.65 [95% CI, 0.64-0.67], P , .001). Actuarial risk of death from stage I breast cancer at 7 years was higher among black women (6.2%) than non-Hispanic white women (3.0%) (HR, 1.57 [95% CI, 1.40-1.75]; P , .001), and lower among South Asian women (1.7%) (HR, 0.48 [95% CI, 0.20-1.15]; P = .10). Black women were more likely to die of breast cancer with small-sized tumors (9.0%) than non-Hispanic white women (4.6%) (HR, 1.96 [95% CI, 1.82-2.12]; P , .001); the difference remained after adjustment ...
The San Juan Islands are like no place on earth. Our remarkable natural beauty is rivaled only by our tight-knit communities. San Juan County also has one of the more progressive voting blocks in the nation. Yet, with a few exceptions, weve not used it to make the powerful change we can. What if we enacted policies fully protecting our environment, taking bold climate action, building a strong, equitable economy, and ensuring our residents are treated with equality and respect? What if our County government powerfully represented our core values? We can make it happen.. Over the past few months, the COVID-19 crisis has been cruel and swift. As we moved to protect the health of our islands, we also felt devastating consequences. Schools, resorts, restaurants, small businesses, shops, and even the libraries closed, with hundreds of islanders losing their income entirely. While American unemployment reached its highest levels since the Great Depression around 15%, San Juan Countys soared to over ...

The San Juan team and coach Jerry Moe are trying to get to their third straight National Intercol final, and today the boys from Bourg Mulatresse made light work of a disjointed Valencia outfit. And although the score line flattered San Juan in the end, Moe was far from pleased with his teams overall display, as he felt his players attitude did not suit the occasion.. Today, we played better defensively than offensively. We didnt get a good rhythm and thats mostly because of a poor effort by the players, Moe told Wired868. And that effort was based on the attitude we came to the game with. We just have to get that attitude back; working collectively and working hard.. A first half effort by defender Jordan Britto, coupled with an own goal by Valencia captain Nick Guy, propelled San Juan to a 2-0 halftime lead. In the second half, with an interesting change from a 4-4-1-1 to a 5-3-2 formation, Moes charges stifled their opposition and clinically killed them off on the other end.. In the ...
