A process for the conversion of carbohydrates from any of a number of sources into butanol and hexanol for fuel or chemical use is disclosed. The process includes conducting a homoacetogenic fermentation to produce an acetic acid intermediate which is chemically converted to ethanol. The ethanol and a remaining portion of the acetic acid intermediate are used as a substrate in an acidogenic fermentation to produce butyric and caproic acid intermediates which are then chemically converted to butanol and hexanol.

The CO2 getter comprises a liquid composition including 1,8-diaza-bicyclo-[5,4,0]-undec-7-ene (DBU) in a solvent that includes an alcohol, preferably, 1-hexanol. In one embodiment, a sheet of gas-permeable membrane is heat-welded to form a pillow-shaped bag in which the liquid composition is sealed. The pillow-shaped bag containing the liquid composition is preferably disposed in a recess of a heat sink and exposed to the cavity through a passage between the recess and the cavity. The CO2 getter can remove a relatively large amount of carbon dioxide from the cavity, and thus effectively prevents solder joint corrosion. For example, based on the formula weights and densities of the DBU and 1-hexanol, 200 g of the liquid composition can remove over 34 g of carbon dioxide.

Plants emit specific blends of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in response to mechanical wounding. Such induced VOCs have been shown to mediate in plant and interplant communication, yet little is known about the time- and dose-response relationships in VOC-mediated communications. Here, we employed young seedlings of Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium to examine the effects of volatiles emitted by artificially damaged seedlings on the biosynthesis of the natural insecticides pyrethrins in intact conspecific plants. Wounded leaves emitted (Z)-3-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl acetate and (E)-β-farnesene as dominant wound-induced VOCs. Exposing intact seedlings to a mixture of these VOCs at concentrations mimicking those emitted from wounded seedlings, as well as placing the intact seedlings next to the wounded seedlings, resulted in enhanced pyrethrin contents in the intact seedlings. Quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) for estimating the adsorption of aliphatic alcohols onto activated carbon were developed using substructural molecular fragments (SMF) method. The adsorption capacity of activated carbon (gr/100grC) for 150 aliphatic alcohols onto activated carbon (AC) is studied under equilibrium conditions. Forward and backwards stepwise regression variable selection and multilinear regression (MLR) are combined to describe the effect of molecular structure on the adsorption capacity of activated carbon according to the QSPR method. To quantitatively relate adsorption capacity (Qe) with the molecular structure MLR analysis is performed on the set of 15 substructural molecular fragments (SMF) provided by the software ISIDA. The five fragments selected by variable subset selection, all belonging to the subfragments, adequately represent the structural factors influencing the affinity of alcohols to AC in the adsorption process. Direct esterification of acetic, butyric, and caproic acids, with ethanol, butanol, isopentanol, or (Z)-3- hexen-l-ol was achieved. Of the systems examined, germinated rapeseed showed the highest degree of flavor synthesis. (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl butyrate and (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl caproate were produced with yields of about 96%.
