Most human genetic material (DNA) is found in the nucleus, where DNA strands containing 23,000 genes are stored in the form of chromosomes. A tiny proportion is found in the mitochondria-organelles that produce energy. It has long been known that both the male and female sexes inherit mitochondrial DNA from their mother only, allowing scientists to use it to trace our evolutionary history and migratory routes. Now, a new study has questioned this long-held theory. A group led by geneticist Taosheng Huang, from the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center, USA, found maternal and paternal mitochondrial DNA in the cells of multiple generations of men and women from three different families (PNAS, December 18, 2018). According to the researchers, this form of inheritance is a rare occurrence.. Republish ...

If heredity puts you at higher risk for a heart attack, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can bring that risk down dramatically, below the risk faced by some people whose genes would normally protect them from heart disease, according to a new analysis of more than 55,000 people. We were a little surprised by how much you could offset your inherited risk by adhering to a healthy lifestyle, said Dr. Sekar Kathiresan, chief author of the new study, presented at an American Heart Association meeting on Sunday and published online simultaneously…. Mendel used the scientific approach to identify two laws of inheritance  Mendel discovered the basic principles of heredity by breeding garden peas in carefully planned experiments.  Advantages of pea plants for genetic study:  There are many varieties with distinct heritable features, or characters; character variants are called traits.  Mating can be controlled.  Each flower has sperm-producing organs (stamens) and an egg- producing organ (carpel)  Cross-pollination (fertilization between different plants) involves dusting one plant with pollen from another.
Abstract The genotype theory of Wilhelm Johannsen (1857-1927) was an important contribution to the founding of classical genetics. This theory built on Johannsens experimental demonstration that hereditary change is discontinuous, not continuous as had been widely assumed. Johannsen is also known for his criticism of traditional Darwinian evolution by natural selection, as well as his criticism of the classical Mendelian chromosome theory of heredity. He has often been seen as one of the anti-Darwinians that caused the eclipse of Darwinism in the early 20th century, before it was saved by the Modern Synthesis. This article focuses on Johannsens criticism of the chromosome theory. He was indeed skeptical of the notion of the chromosomes as the sole carriers of heredity, but he praised the mapping of Mendelian genes on the chromosomes as a major step forward. Johannsen objected that these genes could not account for the whole of heredity, and that the stability of the genotype depended on much ...

This session will cover the background and assumptions that Mendel made regarding the inheritance of particular traits, the hypotheses he developed, the experiments he performed to test the hypotheses, and the conclusions he made. In addition, how offspring acquire genes (and thus traits) from parents by inheriting chromosomes, and how the movement of chromosomes during meiosis is related to Mendels rules of inheritance will be emphasized.

Automated visual tracking of animals is rapidly becoming an indispensable tool for the study of behavior. It offers a quantitative methodology by which organisms sensing and decision-making can be studied in a wide range of ecological contexts. Despite this, existing solutions tend to be challenging to deploy in practice, especially when considering long and/or high-resolution video-streams. Here, we present TRex, a fast and easy-to-use solution for tracking a large number of individuals simultaneously using background-subtraction with real-time (60Hz) tracking performance for up to approximately 256 individuals and estimates 2D visual-fields, outlines, and head/rear of bilateral animals, both in open and closed-loop contexts. Additionally, TRex offers highly-accurate, deep-learning-based visual identification of up to approximately 100 unmarked individuals, where it is between 2.5-46.7 times faster, and requires 2-10 times less memory, than comparable software (with relative performance ...

Background Despite the limited genetic heterogeneity of Spanish populations, substantial evidences support that historical African influences have not affected them uniformly. Accounting for such population differences might be essential to reduce spurious results in association studies of genetic factors with disease. Using ancestry informative markers (AIMs), we aimed to measure the African influences in Spanish populations and to explore whether these might introduce statistical bias in population-based association studies. Methodology/Principal Findings We genotyped 93 AIMs in Spanish (from the Canary Islands and the Iberian Peninsula) and Northwest Africans, and conducted population and individual-based clustering analyses along with reference data from the HapMap, HGDP-CEPH, and other sources. We found significant differences for the Northwest African influence among Spanish populations from as low as ≈5% in Spanish from the Iberian Peninsula to as much as ≈17% in Canary Islanders, whereas

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is an inherited arrhythmia syndrome characterized by severe structural and electrical cardiac phenotypes, including myocardial fibrofatty replacement and sudden cardiac death. Clinical management of ACM is largely palliative, owing to an absence of therapies that target its underlying pathophysiology, which stems partially from our limited insight into the condition. Following identification of deceased ACM probands possessing ANK2 rare variants and evidence of ankyrin-B loss of function on cardiac tissue analysis, an ANK2 mouse model was found to develop dramatic structural abnormalities reflective of human ACM, including biventricular dilation, reduced ejection fraction, cardiac fibrosis, and premature death. Desmosomal structure and function appeared preserved in diseased human and murine specimens in the presence of markedly abnormal β-catenin expression and patterning, leading to identification of a previously unknown interaction between ankyrin-B and ...

Introduction. The Progression of Genetics from Gregor Mendel to Polymerase Chain Reaction Gregor Mendel is often recognised as the Father of Genetics. An Austrian monk who conducted experiments within the monastery garden to investigate inheritance and variation, Mendel cultivated and tested some 29000 pea plants between 1856 and 1863. His experiments brought forth two generalisations which later became known as Mendels Laws of Heredity (or Mendelian inheritance). These are described in his paper Experiments on Plant Hybridisation and include The Law of Segregation, which explains the concepts of dominant and recessive alleles inherited from each parent, and The Law of Independent Assortment which concluded that different traits are inherited independently of each other. (1) However, the significance of Mendels work was not realised until around 1900. Before this, in 1869 the Swiss biologist Friedrich Miescher was investigating leukocytes from pus-soaked bandages in order to isolate and ...

Pangenesis was Charles Darwins hypothetical mechanism for heredity. He presented this provisional hypothesis in his 1868 work The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication and felt that it brought together a multitude of facts which are at present left disconnected by any efficient cause. The etymology of the word comes from the Greek words pan (a prefix meaning whole, encompassing) and genesis (birth) or genos (origin). The hypothesis was eventually replaced by Mendels laws of inheritance. The pangenesis theory, similar to Hippocratess views on the topic, imply that the whole of parental organisms participate in heredity (thus the prefix pan) while adapting to cell theory. Much of Darwins model was speculatively based on inheritance of tiny heredity particles he called gemmules that could be transmitted from parent to offspring. Darwin emphasized that only cells could regenerate new tissues or generate new organisms. He posited that atomic sized gemmules formed by ...
Val C. Sheffield, 2010 Alumni Achievement Award winner, College of Life Sciences. Webbed fingers, brittle bones, dramatic premature aging, lack of irises, and spontaneous bruising all sound like stuff from a science fiction novel, but these real quirks of nature can come from minute mutations in our DNA. With over 3 billion letters making up our DNA, there is a lot of room for errors. Fortunately, Dr. Val Sheffield (BS 74, MS 77), has plenty of experience sorting through DNA. As a geneticist, professor, doctor, and researcher, he works to identify where disease mutations occur and how to help patients who suffer from these diseases.. Sheffields calling in life began in Biology 100 at BYU. He recalls: As Dr. Barnes described Gregor Mendels experiments with pea plants, I was fascinated . . . particularly that Gregor Mendels principles would apply to human heredity and not just plant heredity. Inspired by Mendel, Sheffield finished two degrees at BYU and then earned an MD and a PhD from ...

BACKGROUND: A phenotype is a visible, noticeable, and recognizable trait. An organisms genotype is his genetic make-up which is located in the nuclei of his cells. For example, the physical traits of a tall pea may be made of a dominant tall pea gene and a recessive dwarf pea gene. The phenotype of this plant will be tall, whereas the genotype will be heterozygous (i.e., a dominant and a recessive gene).. When a cross is performed upon parents that differ in only one single character (i.e., tall, short, etc.) it is termed a monohybrid cross. However, in many cases genes have more than one trait. When two sets of hereditary traits are considered it is called a dihybrid. Mendel continued his experiments with a pure (homozygous) tall, red flowering pea plant (TTRR) and crossed it with a pure dwarf, white flowering pea plant (ttrr). All the offspring will be hybrid (heterozygous) tall, red flowering (TtRr). Since the genes for height are on a different pair of chromosomes from the genes for flower ...
2 Rape and Incest are Tragic, But Abortion Doesnt Heal the Pain, by Frederica Matthews-Green, Citizen Magazine, October 2000. Incest. Picture a very young girl who is being sexually assaulted by someone in her family or a close friend and you have the typical, tragic victim of incest. She is helpless and in a seemingly hopeless situation. Someone who is supposed to be protecting her is using her in a vile manner. It is rare, but sometimes she becomes pregnant.. For victims of incest, pregnancy can actually represent their only hope of escaping their abusive situation. To such a girl, incest is the problem and pregnancy may be the solution. The pregnancy forces someone to recognize what she is going through and take steps to rescue her from this intolerable situation.. If she has an abortion, the monstrous perpetrator may even give consent for the abortion to keep it quiet so she can be returned to a life of continued abuse.. Killing the unborn child is a great way to destroy evidence of ...

Genetics is a field of research where a number of different investigative approaches are applied to determine the basis of heredity; that is, how traits or genes are passed on from parents to offspring; and the variation in the way these traits are differently expressed between individuals or populations of individuals.. In more recent times our substantive understanding of the molecular basis of heredity and gene expression and the increased application of high throughput and microchip technologies requiring new computer based approaches to research, data storage and analysis, has broadened the scope of the field of genetics research into a dynamic, multidisciplinary approach to scientific discovery. Where once we would have investigated the inheritance and expression patterns of a single or few genes, we now have access to whole genome sequence databases and can investigate the expression of 1000s of genes simultaneously. The opportunity for characterisation and analysis of the genetic data ...

Abstract: Selection stands as an alternative to essentialist thinking and as a causal frame for current forms within biology and behavior. When originally discovered, selection was thought to work only on the level of phylogenetic evolution. When genes were discovered, their power to potentially work as a substrate for both heredity and variation, which are necessary for natural selection to occur, earned them an exclusive role in evolutionary thought for a long time. Yet since that time, massive advances in the field have uncovered other mechanisms of heredity and variation, and selection-based causal mechanisms within single lifetimes have been uncovered. This talk will review the minimal relationships that are necessary for a system of selection to arise, the varieties of entities and events that fill these necessary roles in various systems of selection, and the interconnectedness between different levels of selection. Information garnered from evolutionary biology, development, epigenetics, ...
Genetics is the study of heredity. Heredity is a biological process where a parent passes certain genes onto their children or offspring. Every child inherits genes from both of their biological parents and these genes in turn express specific traits. Some of these traits may be physical for example hair and eye color and skin color etc. On the other hand some genes may also carry the risk of certain diseases and disorders that may pass on from parents to their offspring.
This course introduces you to the laws of heredity as they apply to humans and to the study of inherited traits. The course covers a number of other related topics, including sex determination, the composition and function of genes, the causes and effects of mutation, population genetics, the genetics of immunity and cancer, the contribution of heredity to behaviour and intelligence, genetic counselling, and genetic technologies.. ...
We now know that structures and functions at the molecular and cellular levels provide the mechanism for reproduction and the continuity of species. Instructions for development are passed from parents to offspring in thousands of discrete genes, each of which is a segment of a molecule of DNA. An organisms particular genetic information, coded in its DNA (genotype), contains genes that provide the information necessary to assemble proteins. Offspring of asexual organisms inherit all of the parents genes. In organisms that reproduce sexually, specialized female and male sex cells (gametes) are formed during a process of cell division called meiosis. Each of these sex cells contains a random half of the parents genetic information ...
