Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major preventable and treatable cause of morbidity and mortality. The ability to link population based centralized laboratory HCV testing data with administrative databases provided a unique opportunity to compare mortality between HCV seronegative and seropositive individuals. Through the use of laboratory testing patterns and results, the objective of this study was to differentiate the viral effects of mortality due to HCV infection from risk behaviours/activities that are associated with acquisition of HCV infection. Serological testing data from the British Columbia (BC) Centre for Disease Control Public Health Microbiology and Reference Laboratory from 1992-2004 were linked to the BC Vital Statistics Agency death registry. Four groups of HCV testers were defined by their HCV antibody (anti-HCV) testing patterns: single non-reactive (SNR); serial multiple tested non-reactive (MNR); reactive at initial testing (REAC); and seroconverter (SERO) (previously

We measured hepatitis C virus antibody titers in 13 patients with chronic hepatitis C to determine whether titration of hepatitis C virus antibody was useful or not, to predict and evaluate the efficacy of interferon (IFN) treatment. During administration of IFN, hepatitis C virus titers declined in all patients. Antibody titers performed before treatment as well as just at the end of treatment did not correlate with change of the alanine aminotransferase levels during administration of IFN. Antibody titers declined continuously after treatment in 5 patients with normal alanine amino-transferase levels for over 6 months after discontinuation of IFN. Antibody titers rose again in 6 patients whose alanine aminotransferase levels fluctuated after treatment. An exceptional pattern of change occurred in 2 patients whose antibody titers declined continuously although their alanine aminotransferase levels fluctuated after treatment. Repeated titration of hepatitis C virus antibody appears to be useful ...

Evolution of HCV infection markers over time.. Most infected people are asymptomatic with onset of disease being insidious. Symptoms range from anorexia, fatigue, fever, myalgia, nausea and vomiting progressing to jaundice. More than 50% of those infected will develop chronic HCV infection. Of those chronically infected about half will develop cirrhosis or cancer of the liver.. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an RNA virus of the Flaviviridae family, previously known as NANB hepatitis, which is spread predominantly by parenteral routes. An estimated 170 million people are infected worldwide, and HCV infection is now the leading cause for liver transplantation in the United States because of its propensity to cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.. HCV is recognized as the cause of most cases of post-transfusion hepatitis and is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. HCV infection has been reported in virtually every country where it has been carefully ...
Background: Approximately 3.2 million persons in the United States are infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and most are unaware of their status. Baby boomers are five times more likely to be infected than the general population. Medicines are now available that are more effective with shorter treatment times. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention recommends all baby boomers be screened once for hepatitis C.. Methods: In July 2013, the Southeast STD Clinic began hepatitis C antibody screening of clients born from 1945-1965 or those with a history of injection drug use. A descriptive analysis of the first three months of data from this new initiative was conducted.. Results: During this time, 69 patients were screened and 24 (34.8%) tested hepatitis C antibody positive. Of those, the average age was 54.5 years (range=33-67 years), 24 (100%) were Black, and 9 (37.5%) were female. Of the 20 patients notified of their positive results, 14 (70%) were unaware of their infection status and ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Signal-to-cutoff ratios of current anti-HCV assays and a suggestion of new algorithm of supplementary testing. AU - Ha, J.. AU - Park, Younhee. AU - Kim, Hyon Suk. N1 - Publisher Copyright: © 2019 Elsevier B.V.. PY - 2019/11. Y1 - 2019/11. N2 - Background: The detection of hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) is known to have high false-positive rates. Using signal-to-cutoff (S/Co) ratios in reflex supplemental testing, however, could reduce false-positive rates. Here, we analyzed the 2-year data of an anti-HCV assay to understand the significance of the S/Co ratio and make a new algorithm by confirming with a second anti-HCV assay. Methods: We reviewed 32,573 samples of the Architect assay (Abbott Diagnostics) from a tertiary hospital. Retests with the Elecsys (Roche Diagnostics) and Vitros (Ortho Clinical Diagnostics) assays were performed in 346 anti-HCV-positive samples. HCV RNA PCR and recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA) were performed in 147 and 11 anti-HCV-positive ...

HCV seroprevalence studies conducted among randomly selected community based samples of the general population from different areas of Italy have shown different anti-HCV prevalence rates. Low rates (range 0.8-1.51%) were observed when the first generation anti-HCV screening assay was used10,14,15 whereas the rates observed with the more sensitive third generation ELISA ranged from 2.7% to 26%.16-19 The 2.4% prevalence found in our study indicates that the endemicity level of HCV infection is low in the area studied. In this epidemiological setting, the incidence was 1.4/10 000 person years. As the study population was that of a survey originally designed to investigate the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, no systematic effort was made to record risk factors for parentally transmitted infections. However, the fact that the study population was not selected for testing on the basis of the presumed risk of infection, in addition to the procedure adopted for random sampling, support the ...

The Hepatitis C Trusts outreach and testing van is designed to overcome some of these barriers to diagnosis. We target the most at risk populations in an area where testings not yet easily available, and we go to them, offering clear information and advice from trained staff as well as on the spot rapid antibody testing. Since our launch in November 2011 till November 2014 weve held more than 225 testing and awareness events, engaging over 4,000 people of whom 2,000 were tested on the van. Consistently 10% of tests to date have identified hepatitis C antibodies.. Before we arrive we work with local services to publicise the visit, ensure we make the most of our time there and that the right facilities and onward referral steps are in place. Sometimes whats needed most is information and we often attend events to raise awareness and help educate people about hepatitis C.. ...
Hepatitis C antibody (HCAb) - Antibodies to Hepatitis C appear in the blood two to four months after infection. Once infected with the hepatitis C virus, nearly 8 in 10 untreated people remain infected for life, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is recommended that positive results be confirmed through use of HCV RNA (qualitative) testing using a methodology called NAA and should be discussed with your doctor ...
Given the global organ shortage for transplantation, use of expanded criteria donors and donors with potentially transmissible diseases has been established as a way to mitigate this problem somewhat. While there is universal consensus on rejecting kidneys from HCV antibody positive donors for transplantation in HCV antibody negative recipients, there is controversy regarding the use of these kidneys for HCV antibody positive recipients. Well, we have the first study that reported the long-term experience in this area (Morales et al, Am J Transplant. Nov 2010). This study was done in Spain. Outcomes of 162 HCV antibody positive recipients (97% of them are HCV RNA positive as well) that received a kidney from HCV antibody positive donors were compared with outcomes of 306 HCV antibody positive recipients that recieved kidney from HCV antibody negative donors. Mean follow-up was 74.5 months. There was no difference in patient survial and decompensated liver disease between the two groups. 5-year ...
In a study designed to assess the prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) in pregnant women, anti-HCV positivity in French pregnant women was twice as high as that found in French blood donors. Positive ELISA 2 results were confirmed by positive RIBA 2 in most subjects, and seven of nine RIBA 2 positive patients also tested positive for HCV-RNA by PCR. High rates of anti-HCV positivity were seen among immigrant pregnant women, partly because of false positive results with ELISA 2. RIBA 2 results suggested that the prevalence of HCV infection was not any higher in immigrant compared with French pregnant women.. ...

CDC has recommended that a person be considered to have serologic evidence of HCV infection only after an anti-HCV screening-test-positive result has been verified by a more specific serologic test or a nucleic acid test (NAT). This more specific, supplemental testing is necessary, particularly in populations with a lower prevalence of disease, to identify and exclude false positive screening test results. However, currently, the majority of laboratories report positive anti-HCV results based on a positive screening assay alone.. The recommended anti-HCV testing algorithm has been expanded to include an option that uses the signal-to-cut-off (s/co) ratios of screening-test--positive results. This can serve as an alternative to a supplemental test in some circumstances, minimizing the number of specimens that require supplemental testing and providing a result that has a high probability of reflecting the persons true antibody status.. Signal-to-cut-off ratios are calculated by dividing the ...
