While children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can acquire helping behaviors through appropriate interventions, changes in behaviors prior to helping (pre-helping behaviors) remain unclear. In the present study, we examined the effects of social skills training (SST) on helping and pre-helping behaviors in two children with ASD by using a two-dimensional motion capture system. During the SST, the children learned one helping behavior that they lent their items to their partners, and we measured their head movements before initiating the helping behavior (i.e., pre-helping behavior). As a result of SST, the participants became able to help others in response to less explicit social stimuli after the intervention. Regarding pre-helping behaviors, the children with ASD before the intervention looked straight at the helpee (i.e., recipient of the help) more often than did typically-developing peers, and such a behavior was shown to increase after SST. These results indicate that although spontaneous
Cultural Values Versus Cultural Norms as Predictors of Differences in Helping Behaviors and in Emotion Regulation: A Preliminary Nation-Level Test Related to the Leung-Morris Model - Volume 13 Issue 4 - Peter B. Smith
Based on the enclothed cognition framework, we tested whether the physical experience of wearing a tunic and identifying it with a nursing scrub may enhance empathic and helping responding, compared to the solely physical experience of wearing the scrub or associating with its symbolic meaning. Results of Study 1 (United Kingdom; n = 150) showed that participants who wore a tunic and identified it with a nursing scrub reported higher empathic concern and helped more in a punctual scenario, compared to the other two conditions. Results of Study 2 (Spain; n = 100) supported findings from Study 1 and also showed that participants who wore a tunic and identified it with a nursing scrub volunteered more hours and showed higher response latency for altruistic motivation relevant words. Thus, the current research supports the enclothed cognition framework and shows that it also affects vicarious emotions and prosocial behaviour.. ...
Cognition-Emotion-Action model (1980) with Ajzens Theory of Planned Behaviour ABSTRACT (TpB, 1991) towards understanding helping behaviour of clinical staff who work with clients diagnosed with a personality disorder (PD) who display difficult and challenging behaviour. Design: This is a quantitative study making use of a single group cross-sectional regression design. A regression analysis was used to examine the predictive ability of the primary constructs within the TpB against the constructs of attribution and emotion from Weiners (1980) model to explain staff helping behaviour. Method: Ninety three clinical staff from all professions took part in a short semi- structured interview regarding an incident of difficult behaviour they had recently experienced involving a client diagnosed with a PD. Participants then completed the Attributional Style Questionnaire Revised (ASQ-R), the Emotional Reactions to Challenging Behaviour scale (ERCB), the Generalised Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), the ...
Data-Driven Learning Guides are a collection of instructional exercises that can be used to enhance teaching of core concepts in the social sciences. This learning guide investigates some of the factors that may influence altruistic behavior -- the act of helping that is intended to provide aid to someone else with no expectations of getting something in return. Research questions that can be explored using this learning guide include: what are the factors that motivate one person to help another, how costs and rewards, or empathy influence helping and altruism, the impact that cultural norms and roles may have on helping behavior, and whether characteristics of the person needing help influence helping behavior and if so, how. Crosstabulations are used for the analyses.. ...

In addition to risk-taking behavior, we propose that psychological safety also promotes prosocial behavior through cooperative goal interdependence. To differentiate these two types of effects, we contrasted the moderating effects of two interpersonal harmony motives. A survey in China supported the indirect effect of psychological safety on helping behavior through cooperative goal interdependence. This mediated relationship was moderated by harmony enhancement such that the mediated effect of psychological safety was weaker when harmony enhancement was high. Psychological safety was positively related to innovative behavior, and this relationship was moderated by disintegration avoidance such that it was weaker when disintegration avoidance was high. These results shed light on the different effects of psychological safety and their underlying mechanisms.. ...
There have been countless scientific articles written documenting experiments which show all manner of empathy, altruism, and cooperation between higher mammals and especially those with highly developed prefrontal cortices. This behavior has been repeatedly identified in human beings, chimpanzees, bonobos, bottlenose dolphins, and elephants. More broadly it has also been seen in the behavior of the more developed mammals.. But what about the lowly, lesser forms of animals, are they indifferent to each other? Are they nothing but dumb brutes competing with peers for survival with no sensitivity to each others plight? Researchers Inbal Ben-Ami Bartal, Jean Decety, and Peggy Mason at the University of Chicago conducted a series of experiments that indicate that even with rats there is empathy and reaction to each others distress. Their experiments led them to conclude there was strong evidence for biological roots of empathically motivated helping behavior.. When there was a free rat in an ...

Life changing! Let me explain. Highline Vision Center is definitely a Grade A vision center, with amazing amenities, in a very desirable location in Southlands - thats the easy part. But what sets Dr. Doyle and H.V.C. apart is the absolute attention to detail and professionalism displayed by the Staff and the other M.D.s. (Quick Story) I stopped in to by some items for my lenses, and my appointment was 2 days later. I was offered an appointment then and there and Dr. Doyle said no, reason...bc he did not feel the quality of service would be beneficial to me the customer, by being just thrown in time slot to fill gaps. Damn!...if thats not an awesome Doctor, I dont know what is. Quality over Quantity! Back to the life changing part! I went to Highline for a typical routine check after about 2 years to get my usual script and maybe a new pair of glasses (boring! I know). But Dr. Doyle recommended something called Scoleral lenses since I have a retina issue called Kerataconus and have ...
So I found some of those discussions quite difficult. Because youre being asked an opinion as to how he would feel in the position he was in, what would he want, and what kind of person was he, what sort of lifestyle did he lead if - Theyd already decided at that stage he was unlikely to be able to walk again if, if in fact he did recover. And this was a day or two into the thing really. And how would he have felt about that. And I had a view then - still do - that, you know, he was a computer engineer, software kind of support engineer and he did a variety of odd - you know, just chopped and changed through his life quite a lot, but was somebody who thought a lot, spent a lot of time reading, and I was saying then that, you know, if he could still do that, he could still get on the internet and, you know, research things and then that would still be a reasonable lifestyle for him, if that was feasible. So after some discussion - and they obviously had their own debate about that as well I ...
Well, it was just - it was actually blissful. I just felt- I felt not alone and I also felt - its funny, isnt it, because obviously its quite a long medical report. I wanted to run around, I wanted to find a car park to run round with, waving this report and waving a football rattle in my other hand sort of cheering. Because it just felt sort of - so bits I - the bits that were particularly yes, yes, yes, were about - theres a bit where it says after - if theres a diagnosis of PVS after a year it becomes - and I think the expression is not only appropriate but necessary to consider withdrawal. And thats the thing, you know, it was six years before we kind of - probably because I eventually said to my parents what I was thinking that we then… were put in the situation where we had to do it ourself. And the very fact that the report says, in the past, it says, families have had to do this and they shouldnt have. And I thought, yes. Because I dont feel we should have had to. I mean, my ...

While Keck Medicine of USC employees have worked hard to ensure the health and safety of patients and of each other during the pandemic, one team in particular has been working to make sure that patients are mentally and emotionally cared for during their stay. As policies have shifted to restrict visitors and reduce the risk of COVID-19 contamination, the Patient and Family Experience team stepped up to the task. We are trying to adapt to new ways in connecting to our patients in absence of rounds and other patient experience programs, said Kaitlin Alderete, MHA, director of Patient and Family Experience at Keck Medical Center. The no-visitor policy is hitting our patients very hard and is pushing us towards technology and outside-the-box ways of thinking about communication. From the beginning of the pandemic, Keck Hospital of USCs concierge team, part of Patient and Family Experience, formed a partnership with the float pool team to monitor the entrances to the hospital. I Physical Attractiveness: Attractiveness is defined as physical attractiveness or the attractiveness of a persons personality or behaviour (DeVito, 1976). Researchers believe physical attractiveness can be defined for any one individual situationally (DeVito, 1976). Physically attractive people are more likely to receive help than unattractive people (Harrell,1978). The explanation lies in the fact, that as a society, we consciously or subconsciously tend to treat attractive individuals differently, expecting better lives for them (Berscheid, Walster, Bohrnstedt, 1973). Adams and Cohen (1976) feel physical attractiveness is a major factor in the development of prosocial behaviour in a child.. II. Similarity and Kinship: Finally, individuals are more likely to behave prosocially towards similar or likable others (Penner et al., 2005), and towards others considered to be close, especially kin (Graziano et al., 2007). Genetic relatedness aside, pro-social behaviour towards family members probably ...

This study aimed to explore students ability to provide effective support for their peers with depressive symptoms and the factors influencing the quality of their mental health first aid (MHFA) skills, including students gender, course of study, and gender of student experiencing depression. Via an online survey, students at two British universities (N = 483) were quasi-randomly allocated to view a video vignette of either a male or female student depicting symptoms of depression. An open-ended question probed MHFA actions they would take to help the vignette character, which were rated using a standardised scoring scheme based on MHFA guidelines. Students reported low MHFA scores (mean 2.89, out of possible 12). The most commonly reported action was provision of support and information, but only eight (1.6 %) students stated an intention to
