But for this species, the high-density maps were reported limitedly. Objective: In this study, we proposed to construct a high-density genetic linkage map by an F7 population of sunflower using SNP and SSR Markers. Method: The ...
Multiple genomic regions influence root morphology and seedling growth in cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) under...
With climate change and an ever-increasing human population threatening food security, developing a better understanding of the genetic basis of crop performance under stressful conditions has become increasingly important. Here, we used genome-wide association studies to genetically dissect variation in seedling growth traits in cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) under well-watered and water-limited (i.e., osmotic stress) conditions, with a particular focus on root morphology. Water limitation reduced seedling size and produced a shift toward deeper rooting. These effects varied across genotypes, and we identified 13 genomic regions that were associated with traits of interest across the two environments. These regions varied in size from a single marker to 186.2 Mbp and harbored numerous genes, some of which are known to be involved in the plant growth/development as well as the response to osmotic stress. In many cases, these associations corresponded to growth traits where the common allele
Fertilizer and intercropped legumes as nitrogen source for Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) tops for bioenergy
Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) produces substantial shoots not used as food. To test its potential as a sustainable bioenergy crop, we studied the effects of synthetic fertilizer and intercropped legumes as nitrogen (N) sources on the growth, aboveground biomass dry matter yield and energy qualities of this crop. Plant height, leaf area index (LAI), SPAD-value, biomass yield, ash content and mineral element composition were determined. Mean aboveground biomass yields were not significantly affected by N source (legume intercrops and synthetic fertilizer) and ranged from 13 to 17 t ha(-1). Remarkably, plants given no fertilizer yielded equally to plants given 90 N kg ha(-1). These results confirm that Jerusalem artichoke, compared to other energy crops, have less need for N and can potentially be sustained by N fixing legumes in an intercropped system. This could reduce or eliminate production and environmental cost in cultivation of biomass feedstock for energy use ...

Survey of common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) resistance to imazethapyr and chlorimuron in northeast Kansas | Konza Prairie...
Imazethapyr resistance in common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) was confirmed in 1996 in a field near Rossville, KS. In 1997, common sunflower achenes were collected within a 20-km radius of the field with known resistance to determine if resistance was present in nearby fields or if resistance had spread to the native population on the roadside. Collections were made from 14 soybean (Glycine max) fields, one corn (Zea mays) field, and 11 roadsides. Achenes from Konza Prairie Research Natural Area, a prairie that had received no herbicide applications in the past 25 yr, served as the susceptible control. Common sunflower seedlings were treated in a greenhouse with 71 g ai/ha imazethapyr and 11 g ai/ha chlorimuron. In all 15 fields sampled, at least 1% of the common sunflower exhibited an intermediate response to imazethapyr or chlorimuron. In 13 fields, at least 1% of the plants were resistant to imazethapyr, and in all 15 fields, at least 1% of the plants were resistant to chlorimuron. Ten ...

The influence of alcoholic extract from leaves of Helianthus annuus L. on germination and growth of Sinapis alba L. | Zenodo
The knowledge of plants interactions is used for their better protection and cultivation. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of alcoholic extracts from the leaves of the common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) on selected physiological parameters of plants of white mustard (Sinapis alba Barka). The seeds germination, the growth, the fresh and dry masses of plants grown from seeds and germinated on the sunflower extracts and plants watered by H. annuus extracts during the growth phase were studied. In the growth phase, the fresh masses of all organs were increased on 5 % extract, however significantly decreased on 10 % extract. The dry mass of S. alba was not significantly changed. In the germination phase, much less changes of these parameters were revealed. In general, extracts from H. annuus leaves inhibited germination of S. alba seeds, but stimulated growth of plants in case of application of 5 % concentrations during the germination phase and inhibited their growth in case of

Sunflower is an important oilseed crop, as well as a model system for evolutionary studies, but its 3.6 gigabase genome has proven difficult to assemble, in part because of the high repeat content of its genome. Here we report on the sequencing, assembly, and analyses of 96 randomly chosen BACs from sunflower to provide additional information on the repeat content of the sunflower genome, assess how repetitive elements in the sunflower genome are organized relative to genes, and compare the genomic distribution of these repeats to that found in other food crops and model species. We also examine the expression of transposable element-related transcripts in EST databases for sunflower to determine the representation of repeats in the transcriptome and to measure their transcriptional activity. Our data confirm previous reports in suggesting that the sunflower genome is >78% repetitive. Sunflower repeats share very little similarity to other plant repeats such as those of Arabidopsis, rice, maize and
Sunflower seed - Wikipedia
The sunflower seed is the fruit of the sunflower (Helianthus annuus). There are three types of commonly used sunflower seeds: linoleic (most common), high oleic, and NuSun developed for sunflower oil. Each variety has its own unique levels of monounsaturated, saturated, and polyunsaturated fats. The information in this article refers mainly to the linoleic variety. For commercial purposes, sunflower seeds are usually classified by the pattern on their husks. If the husk is solid black, the seeds are called black oil sunflower seeds. The crops may be referred to as oilseed sunflower crops. These seeds are usually pressed to extract their oil. Striped sunflower seeds are primarily used for food; as a result, they may be called confectionery sunflower seeds. The term sunflower seed is actually a misnomer when applied to the seed in its pericarp (hull). Botanically speaking, it is a cypsela. When dehulled, the edible remainder is called the sunflower kernel or heart. In 2014, global production of ...
Chromosome walking at the fertility restorer locus Rf1 in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) @ RosDok
In Sunflower hybrids are obtained by using the cytoplasmic male sterility/fertility restoration system, which is due to a nuclear-cytoplasmic incompatibility. Hybrid breeding is based on the cytoplasmic male sterility, PET1. Male fertility can be restored by the nuclear restorer gene Rf1. The objective of this study was to use a map-based cloning strategy to isolate the Rf1 gene. Seventy-one BAC-clones were identified. Twenty-seven BAC-ends were isolated. Contigs were formed, each representing a unique genomic region. The two BAC libraries used have a too low coverage in the region of Rf1 gene.

Summary Unshelled sunflower seeds are a popular snack - blog
This year wasnt excellent for increasing significantly of something in our garden. When the planted seeds mature, breaking the plant will return some Sunflower Seeds. Sunflower seeds are well-known for each their rich flavor and in depth nutrient profile. Originating in Mesopotamia, the flax plant has been known because the Stone Age and the overall health benefits of flaxseeds, a lot more frequently known as linseeds, have been widely praised in ancient Greece and Rome. Heres a collection of recipes from my recent sunflower seed food exploration: a bread produced with sunflower seed flour a lacto fermented seed cheese a soaked sunflower seed spread, and a crunchy roasted spicy sunflower snack. Moreover, since sunflower seeds have a quite high oil content, it is frequent for them to be used as the base for processed polyunsaturated oils. Further to its high nutritional worth, sunflower seed also gives a valuable alternative to peanuts or tree-nuts. It outshines other oils for industrial use by ...

Genotyping and lipid profiling of 601 cultivated sunflower lines reveals novel genetic determinants of oil fatty acid content |...
Sunflower is an important oilseed crop domesticated in North America approximately 4000 years ago. During the last century, oil content in sunflower was under strong selection. Further improvement of oil properties achieved by modulating its fatty acid composition is one of the main directions in modern oilseed crop breeding. We searched for the genetic basis of fatty acid content variation by genotyping 601 inbred sunflower lines and assessing their lipid and fatty acid composition. Our genome-wide association analysis based on the genotypes for 15,483 SNPs and the concentrations of 23 fatty acids, including minor fatty acids, revealed significant genetic associations for eleven of them. Identified genomic regions included the loci involved in rare fatty acids variation on chromosomes 3 and 14, explaining up to 34.5% of the total variation of docosanoic acid (22:0) in sunflower oil. This is the first large scale implementation of high-throughput lipidomic profiling to sunflower germplasm

African Journal of Plant Science - nacl tolerance studies at seedling stage among different genotypes of helianthus annus l.
A greenhouse research was conducted at the research area of Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad to evaluate 20 accessions for the identification of salt tolerant genotypes of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) as well as their characteristics. The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design with three repeats. Salinity was developed with NaCl to achieve the final levels of 3, 6 and 9 dsm-1 salinity, whereas control contained tap water. After 60 days of planting, 10 seedlings of each accession from each treatment and replication were uprooted and data was recorded. Sunflower genotypes G-36, G-61, A-23, A-61 and A-185 performed better in both controlled and saline conditions. These genotypes showed better shoot and root growth and biomass by least concentration of Na+ and higher concentration of Cl- in leaf sap.
Key words: Tap water, NaCl, replication, leaf sap.

DIGITAL.CSIC: Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) long-chain acyl-coenzyme A synthetases expressed at high levels in developing seeds
Long chain fatty acid synthetases (LACSs) activate the fatty acid chains produced by plastidial de novo biosynthesis to generate acyl-CoA derivatives, important intermediates in lipid metabolism. Oilseeds, like sunflower, accumulate high levels of triacylglycerols (TAGs) in their seeds to nourish the embryo during germination. This requires that sunflower seed endosperm supports very active glycerolipid synthesis during development. Sunflower seed plastids produce large amounts of fatty acids, which must be activated through the action of LACSs, in order to be incorporated into TAGs. We cloned two different LACS genes from developing sunflower endosperm, HaLACS1 and HaLACS2, which displayed sequence homology with Arabidopsis LACS9 and LACS8 genes, respectively. These genes were expressed at high levels in developing seeds and exhibited distinct subcellular distributions. We generated constructs in which these proteins were fused to green fluorescent protein and performed transient expression ...

Differential Sensitivity of Oleosins to Proteolysis During Oil Body Mobilization in Sunflower Seedlings : Plant and Cell...
Until now, there has been no conclusive demonstration of any in vivo oleosin degradation at the early stages of oil body mobilization. The present work on sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) has demonstrated limited oleosin degradation during seed germination. Seedling cotyledon homogenization in Tris-urea buffer, followed by SDS-PAGE, revealed three oleosins (16, 17.5 and 20 kDa). Incubation of oil bodies with total soluble protein from 4-day-old seedlings resulted in oleosin degradation. In vitro and in vivo degradation of the 17.5-kDa oleosin was faster than the other two, indicating its greater susceptibility to proteolysis. Oleosin degradation by the total soluble protein resulted in a transient 14.5-kDa polypeptide, followed by an 11-kDa protease-protected fragment, which appeared post-germinatively and accumulated corresponding to increased rate of lipid mobilization. A 65-kDa protease, active at pH 7.5-9.5, was zymographically detected in the total soluble protein. Its activity increased ...

Sunflower (Mile-a-minute Vine)
County fairs are a curious amalgam of nostalgic and contemporaneous events that remind us of the way it was in rural America in a supposedly simpler time. Competition to have the biggest and best in the county is keen and comes in many forms. The giant sunflower heads the list of the most unusual in plant exhibits. These sunflower giants may have been grown down on the farm in bygone days, but they were in grandmothers flower garden not in grandfathers fields. The story of how this all-American weed became an important crop plant bears a closer look. The sunflower, Helianthus annuus, is a member of the daisy family with wide distribution across the United States. Sunflowers are large plants with two distinct architectures. The wild type can grow 10 to 12 feet tall with considerable branching, each of which terminates in 5-inch diameter blooms. The cultivated sunflower has lost the ability to branch and can grow to 15 feet tall with a single flower head atop the stout stem that may be the size ...
Those Mysterious Jerusalem Artichokes « Potassium Rich Foods
Potassium rich Jerusalem artichokes are a mystery to most of us. They are not artichokes, and have nothing to do with Jerusalem. They are native to North America, in fact, and are the roots of a plant in the daisy family related to the sunflower. Native Americans were the first to harvest them. While sunflower root would have sounded fine with most of us, the Europeans who first tasted this tuber decided it was like an artichoke. They called this artichoke girasole, which somehow morphed to Jerusalem, because, well, thats how we roll in America.. What matters here is that these are rich in potassium, with 644mg of potassium per cup, sliced. (About 150 grams.) They are also iron-rich, and can be served in a variety of ways, from sauteed to mashed to pickled.. A couple of suggestions can be found on our Jerusalem Artichoke recipe page.. ...

N2 - In the sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cotyledons, two distinguishable thiolase activities have been identified: acetoacetyl CoA thiolase (AACT), specifically active during oxidation of short chain acetoacetyl CoA, and 3-oxoacyl CoA thiolase (OACT), active towards short, medium, and long-chain acyl CoAs. The purpose of this research was to optimize the purification of the AACT expressed in bacteria. Escherischia coli (E. coli) with the full-length sunflower AACT cDNA cloned into the expression vector pBAD-His B was induced for production of the AACT using 0.2% arabinose. Optimizing the conditions for protein purification is often an extremely empirical process requiring several iterations of a basic protocol each with specific changes. This iterative process was simplified ...
Sunflower Seeds Traced as Source of Toxic Mold, Potent Liver Carcinogen
Michigan State University researchers have shown that sunflower seeds are frequently contaminated with a toxin produced by molds and pose an increased health risk in many low-income countries worldwide. In the current issue of PLoS ONE, the team of scientists documented frequent occurrence of aflatoxin - a toxin produced by Aspergillus molds that commonly infect corn, peanuts, pistachios and almonds - in sunflower seeds and their products. This is one of the first studies to associate aflatoxin contamination with sunflower seeds.. The study was conducted in Tanzania, but the problem is by no means isolated there. Chronic exposure to aflatoxin causes an estimated 25,000 to 155,000 deaths worldwide each year, from corn and peanuts alone. Since it is one of the most potent liver carcinogens known, the research to detect and limit its presence in sunflower seeds and their products could help save lives and reduce liver disease in areas where sunflowers and their byproducts are consumed, said Gale ...

New highly aggressive pathotype 354 of Plasmopara halstedii in German sunflower fields | Otmar Spring, Reinhard Zipper | Agricultural Journals
Races of isolates of Plasmopara halstedii from Spain and studies on their virulence.
Plants infected with downy mildew were collected from 1994 to 2000 in sunflower fields in Spain. The race of 102 bulk isolates of Plasmopara halstedii obtained from them was determined by inoculation of sunflower lines traditionally used as differentials for characterization of the pathogen. Nine different races of the fungus were determined. Although race 1 was most common and was the only one found in central Spain, races 4, 6, and 7 were widespread in southern Spain. The results allowed the identification of a new race of the pathogen, race 10, and of a race not previously reported in Europe, race 8. According to the proposal of a new system for characterization of the isolates of P. halstedii in the late 1990s, Coded Virulence Formulae (CVF) were assigned to bulk isolates and single-sporangium (ss) isolates obtained from them. The CVF of the bulk isolates (CVFi) did not always fit with the previous designation. Similarly, ss isolates from the same bulk isolate exhibited different CVF, not ...

Eliminating Summer Fallow Reduces Winter Wheat Yields, but Not Necessa by Drew J. Lyon, David D. Baltensperger et al.
Summer fallow is commonly used to stabilize winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the Central Great Plains, but summer fallow results in soil degradation, limits farm productivity and profitability, and stores soil water inefficiently. The objectives of this study were to quantify the production and economic consequences of replacing summer fallow with spring-planted crops on the subsequent winter wheat crop. A summer fallow treatment and five spring crop treatments [spring canola (Brassica napus L.), oat (Avena sativa L.) + pea (Pisum sativum L.) for forage, proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.), dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), and corn (Zea mays L.)] were no-till seeded into sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) residue in a randomized complete block design with five replications during 1999, 2000, and 2001. Winter wheat was planted in the fall following the spring crops. Five N fertilizer treatments (0, 22, 45, 67, and 90 kg N ha-1) were randomly assigned to each previous spring crop

The Canadian Entomologist. 135:713-719. Interpretive Summary: Moth sex pheromone are useful tools for monitoring the presence and population density of pest species in commercial fields. Studies were undertaken to determine the pheromone of a moth occurring in cultivated sunflower. The sex pheromone of Cochylis arthuri Dang was identified as an 80:20 mixture of (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate, respectively. C. arthuri is closely related to the banded sunflower moth, Cochylis hospes Walsingham, a major pest of sunflower in the Great Plains region of North America. Larvae of both species consume the disk flowers and developing seeds of sunflower. They are found together on sunflowers in this region, although C. arthuri appears to be much less common. In testing of the respective pheromone blends of these two ...

Daisy pollen (Helianthus sp.), SEM - Stock Image C032/4451 - Science Photo Library
Sunflower pollen (Helianthus sp), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The outer wall (exine) has many small spiky projections. The pollen gets caught in the body hairs of insects visiting the flower. Cross pollination occurs when insects fly to another similar flower and pollen is left behind. Pollen contains the male reproductive cells of a plant. When the pollen grain, containing the male gametes, lands on the stigma of a flower, it germinates. A pollen tube grows out from the germinal pore, down through the stigma, to the ovary. The male nuclei pass down the tube, fertilize the ovules and seed is formed. Humans can also be allergic to daisy pollen. Magnification: x260 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. - Stock Image C032/4451

Striking differences in RNA editing requirements to express the rps4 gene in magnolia and sunflower mitochondria | IRIS Univ....
The ribosomal protein S4 gene (rps4) has been identified as a single copy sequence in the mitochondrial genomes of two distant higher plants, Magnolia and Helianthus. Sequence analysis revealed that the rps4 genes present in the magnolia and sunflower mitochondrial genomes encode S4 polypeptides of 352 and 331 amino acids, respectively, longer than their counterparts in liverwort and bacteria. Expression of the rps4 genes in the investigated higher plant mitochondria was confirmed by Western blot analysis. In Helianthus, one of two short nucleotide insertions at the 3-end introduces in the coding region a premature termination codon. Northern hybridizations and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis demonstrated that the monocistronic RNA transcripts generated from the rps4 locus in Magnolia and Helianthus mitochondria are modified by RNA editing at 28 and 13 positions, respectively. Although evolutionarily conserved, RNA editing requirements of the rps4 appear more extensive ...

Investigation on the resistance of doubled haploid sunflower lines to some biotic factors - Ascitech
Abstract. The investigation was carried out at the Laboratory facilities of Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute (DAI), General Toshevo, Bulgaria during 2010 - 2012, and involved 15 doubled haploid fertility restorer sunflower lines (R-lines). The lines were obtained by the gamma-induced parthenogenesis method under greenhouse conditions in 2007 from three hybrid combinations developed at DAI. The resistance of the plants to downy mildew - one of the main pathogens on sunflower, and to the parasite broomrape was followed. The breeding materials were infected with downy mildew (Plasmopara halstedii), race 731, and broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.) under greenhouse conditions. The evaluation for resistance was done according to a scale from 0 % (susceptible genotype) to 100 % (resistant genotype). To determine the resistance to downy mildew, standard methodology was applied, adapted for work under the specific conditions of DAI; the methodology of Panchenko (1975) was used to determine the ...

Helianthus - Last Syllable Press
What I love about sunflowers is their lack of guile. Of course there is a measure of egotism and narcissism in that, because I also see myself as a creature that lacks guile. A cautious and distrustful mystery of a person may fall in love with a rose, and a diva may love a gardenia. But me, I love a sunflower.. Its said that sunflowers are optimistic, and while that may be generally true, I dont think it is necessarily their defining trait. The sunflower is a frank plant. It is straightforward about what it likes, and it wants that in great quantity. The sunflower goes to the buffet of life and fills every plate to the brim with its chosen food. It needs no invitation; it has a zesty indulgence of few wonderful things in large amounts.. Many flowers, like many people, require a great deal of coaxing to open. They go through life closely guarding their hearts, their desires, their dreams. They may wait their entire lives for someone to become intimate enough to ask if theyve dreamed their ...
