The National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) was founded in 1990 at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. From 1988-1993, NCHAM conducted the first large-scale clinical trial of universal newborn hearing screening known as the Rhode Island Hearing Assessment Project. Results of this trial were focused on a variety of subjects that were included in the 1993 decision of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that all newborns should be screened for hearing loss. From 1993-1996, NCHAM directed a National Consortium for Newborn Hearing Screening that resulted in over 100 hospitals in 10 states implementing newborn hearing screening programs. From 1996-2000, NCHAM staff worked with newborn hearing screening programs in 35 states and provided direct assistance to over 200 hospitals in establishing Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs. Since April 1, 2000, NCHAM has served as the National Technical Assistance System for EHDI programs and with support from the ...
In the first few weeks of life your baby will have several routine health checks. One of these checks offered is a free newborn hearing screen. The hearing screen is performed prior to discharge from hospital by the midwife or designated screener and is most often performed at the babys bedside. South Australia uses Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) assessment to check the babys hearing status. This technology is a valid and reliable method of determining whether a baby has a significant hearing loss or not.. If a pass results is not obtained in one or both ears, a second AABR will be offered by your local Child and Family Health Nurse. If a pass results is not obtained following two valid hearing screens, further assessment by an audiologist is recommended. The Child and Family Health nurse will refer the child to the Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening Program for further assessment.. The aim of the hearing test is to get a complete picture of the babys hearing. Auditory ...
Today was a glorious Autumn day in Sydney and my day started with my hearing test. First my middle ear was checked with a special machine and that was fine in both ears. Then in the next test my left ear passed but my right ear failed, then it was time to put on the headphones and have the hearing test. My left ear has stayed the same with mild hearing loss in my high frequency range, my right ear however has become worse. Audiology want me to have an appointment with hearing Australia to organise an amplifier system for me to use at school. Also to get ear plugs to use when I go somewhere really noisy to block out outside noise. I am glad something can be done for my hearing. ...

We went to Shawnee Park yesterday for a hearing test. They first tested her without the hearing aids which came out with basically the same results from Ken-o-sha--profound hearing loss...registering sound at about 90 decibels. Then, we did the test with the hearing aids in. She showed some signs of hearing around 45 decibels, so she is hearing quite a bit more than we thought she was. :) I think it just takes time for her to know how to respond to sound. We keep trying different kinds of sounds and she is gradually responding to more and more. Today, I got a response from an "mmmmm" sound. We try to make different sounds for each toy that she has so that eventually, hopefully, she will try to make those same types of sounds ...

We had a hearing test done on my DS (dear son) before and after his ear tubes were put in. Prior to the tubes being put in, there was fluid on both eardrums, so the doctor and audiologist werent terribly concerned. However, after the surgery, when it was verified that the tubes were in and open, the audiologist said that there was no improvement after the tubes. She recommended another test at a different facility. 1)Feeling like a bad mommy. Shouldnt I have known my LO (little one) cant hear well? Never occurred to me. He says lots of words, loves music, responds to questions, etc. His teachers never mentioned any concerns either. 2)Frustrating. Cant seem to get a clear explanation of how they tested his hearing and how bad the loss it. Waiting on a call back. 3)Anyone else have similar experiences? What was your outcome?

Im sure there has already been a thread but I dont know how to search on my phone. My son failed in one ear last night but was fine in the other. They retested this morning and he failed in both. He was a c section on Wednesday morning. I am hoping this is due to fluid. The nurses told me not to worry yet but I am obviously worrying because.... I am a mom. I have to make an appointment with audiology. Did anyone have their baby fail the hearing test and then pass fine later on?
Once youve scheduled your hearing test appointment, there are a few things you can do to help you prepare for this important visit.

This study will look at the feasibility and acceptability of testing newborn babies who are referred after their newborn hearing screen for an infection called congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV). Around 1 in every 100 to 200 babies is born with this virus, and although most remain well it causes 1 in 5 cases of childhood deafness. Knowing that a baby is infected shortly after birth could have significant benefit since a treatment is now available, but screening programs need to be feasible and acceptable. This study aims to evaluate targeted screening for cCMV by taking samples (saliva and urine) from babies who do not pass their newborn hearing screening. The investigators want to see if we can find a quick, reliable and parentally acceptable way to screen babies who fail their hearing test for this virus ...

We have started a "therapeutic listening" program with Whitney to work on helping her filter out background noise and pay attention when someone is speaking to her or trying to get her attention. Whitney failed her newborn hearing screen and multiple hearing tests following her birth. Unfortunately, her heart was more of a severe issue in her first few months of life than her hearing and we were unable to pursue her hearing as quickly as we would have liked because we were more focused on just keeping her alive and getting her to her open-heart surgery date (December 1, 2008 - 3 months and a few days after she was born) and then keeping her healthy and helping her as she recovered after surgery. We then ran into a problem with an ENT that after waiting nearly two months to get in for an appointment (after Whitney was starting to recover from open-heart surgery) did NOT do her job thoroughly. She merely looked in her ear canals and proceeded to tell me that her ears are clear and look just fine. ...
Subject: Re: Tinnitus and a dip in the audiogram From: Kevin Austin ,[email protected], Date: Sun, 9 Sep 2012 06:55:19 -0400 List-Archive: Hi This is very similar to a question that I discussed recently with a few people from this list. Not being in the field, I have difficulty framing the question. Sorry. A hearing test -- the tones, tests hearing threshold. The hearing test I took used discrete frequencies and therefore the results have to be extracted from an interpolation. I was diagnosed with "mild" hearing loss in the 4kHz and 8kHz range, which is about 1 1/2 octaves below my main tinnitus which is a sort of small tone cluster around 11-12 kHz. The level of my tinnitus varies rather quickly with where I am - environmental allergies? When I listen to music / sounds at around 70 - 80dB, to me, my hearing appears to be relatively "flat". I am not aware of a [to me] large dip in the 4 - 10 kHz range when I am listening at normal ...

The good news is....he has perfect hearing if they bypass the middle ear which means his hearing loss is treatable. So, we will discuss with the ENT doctor about how to eliminate the fluid in his ear at our next appointment in July. This is usually done with tubes but with little ears these are hard to place so they may recommend baby hearing aids until tubes can be placed so he doesnt miss out on any speech development. Also, we were told that Joaquins ears are not the "typical" ears of a child with Down syndrome so the anatomy of his ears are "normal" and are to be treated this way by the ENT. Such good news ...
