The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) aims to collect important health information through a household interview and direct physical measures at a mobile examination centre (MEC), sometimes referred to as a mobile clinic.
IntroductionThe stages of biological development are not clearly defined despite the fact that they have been used to refer to concepts such as adolescence and aging. This study aimed to (1) propose and test a framework to search for stages of representative components and determine stages of stability and transition, (2) identify stages of biological development based on health questionnaire and biomarker data, and (3) interpret the major trajectories in a health and biomarker database.MethodsThis study analyzed the data on the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) interviewees from cycle 1 to 3 (2007-2013) in Canada. We selected 282 variables containing information from questionnaire and on biomarkers after removing redundant variables based on high correlation. Fifty-nine nominal variables were replaced by 122 binominal variables, leaving 345 variables for analysis. Principal component (PC) analysis was conducted to summarize the data and the loadings were used to interpret the PCs. A stable stage

Since 1992, the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, has conducted the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The survey provides detailed information on population, health and nutrition in each state and union territory of India. This state report on Goa presents the important findings of the surveys fourth round, conducted in both the states districts (North Goa and South Goa) between January 20 and April 6, 2015. Previous NFHS surveys were conducted in 1992-93, 1998-99 and 2005-06. NFHS-4 surveyed 572,000 households in 640 districts of India (as per the 2011 Census). In Goa, data was gathered from 1,588 households; 1,696 women (aged 15-49) and 848 men (aged 15-54) were interviewed. The survey collected information on the socio-economic characteristics of households, education, fertility, family planning, infant and child mortality and maternal and child health. It also gathered information on reproductive health,

The 2009 to 2011 CHMS was unique in that respondents themselves deployed the indoor air samplers in their homes and mailed them back to the testing laboratory. Almost all (99%) respondents who participated in the mobile examination centre component of the survey took a sampler home. The high percentage of samplers returned to the laboratory in a condition that met the surveys protocol (condition code 0) indicated that respondent deployment is a viable option for future national surveys.. It was anticipated that a certain number of samplers would be returned in compromised condition. A coding scheme was devised to document the nature and frequency of these deviations. Among the compromised samplers, substantial numbers were coded 5 (missing exposure times) or 6 (incomplete exposure times). Starting with site 10, Statistics Canada instituted a call-back to respondents who returned code 5 samplers. As a result, the number of code 5 samplers fell from 351 at sites 1 to 9 to 153 at sites 10 to 18. ...

INTRODUCTION: A strong relationship exists between disability and poor health. This relationship could exist as a result of disabilities emerging from chronic conditions; conversely, people with disabilities may be at increased risk of developing chronic conditions. Studying health in relation to age of disability onset can illuminate the extent to which disability may be a risk factor for future poor health. METHODS: We used data from the 2006-2012 National Health Interview Survey and conducted weighted logistic regression analyses to compare chronic conditions in adults with lifelong disabilities (n = 2,619) and adults with no limitations (n = 122,395). RESULTS: After adjusting for sociodemographic differences, adults with lifelong disabilities had increased odds of having the following chronic conditions compared with adults with no limitations: coronary heart disease (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.92; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.33-3.66) cancer (AOR = 1.61; 95% CI, 1.34-1.94), diabetes ...
In emergency medicine, there is an ongoing debate regarding patients who use the emergency department (ED) as their usual source of medical care-an arguably costly and inefficient pattern of utilization. However, there are few accurate national data on the prevalence of such usage. This analysis uses the 1998 National Health Interview Survey to estimate the number of Americans who name the ED as their usual source of care, and compares their characteristics with those who have a usual source of care other than the ED. Poverty, lack of insurance, younger age, male gender, and minority race or ethnicity predicted identifying the ED as the usual source of care. ...

Background: Diabetes has been defined on the basis of different biomarkers, including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h plasma glucose in an oral glucose tolerance test (2hOGTT), and HbA1c. We assessed the effect of different diagnostic definitions on both the population prevalence of diabetes and the classification of previously undiagnosed individuals as having diabetes versus not having diabetes in a pooled analysis of data from population-based health examination surveys in different regions. Methods: We used data from 96 population-based health examination surveys that had measured at least two of the biomarkers used for defining diabetes. Diabetes was defined using HbA1c (HbA1c ≥6·5% or history of diabetes diagnosis or using insulin or oral hypoglycaemic drugs) compared with either FPG only or FPG-or-2hOGTT definitions (FPG ≥7·0 mmol/L or 2hOGTT ≥11·1 mmol/L or history of diabetes or using insulin or oral hypoglycaemic drugs). We calculated diabetes prevalence, taking into account ...

The Hawaii Health Survey (HHS) is a continuous statewide household survey of health and socio-demographic conditions of Hawaiis people. The survey is conducted as a means of providing Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) programs, other agencies, and the public with statistics for planning and evaluation of health services, programs, and health research.. Core variables included are gender, age, income, ethnicity, education, household size, insurance status, income and poverty status, and health status including both mental and physical health. Ethnicity, income, insurance status are derived from detailed multiple coded since the surveys inception and can be reported using various algorithms including the American Community Survey methods. Insurance status is captured by seventeen questions.. The HHS (initiated in 1968) was modeled after the National Health Information Survey. In 1996 it became a telephone survey; OHSM has contracted with SMS Research to conduct the survey beginning in 1996. The ...

Health surveys provide important information on the burden and secular trends of risk factors and disease. Several factors including survey and item non-response can affect data quality. There are few reports on efficiency, validity and the impact of item non-response, from developing countries. This report examines factors associated with item non-response and study efficiency in a national health survey in a developing Caribbean island. A national sample of participants aged 15-74 years was selected in a multi-stage sampling design accounting for 4 health regions and 14 parishes using enumeration districts as primary sampling units. Means and proportions of the variables of interest were compared between various categories. Non-response was defined as failure to provide an analyzable response. Linear and logistic regression models accounting for sample design and post-stratification weighting were used to identify independent correlates of recruitment efficiency and item non-response. We recruited

OBJECTIVES: Responses to health-related items on the Community Health Survey (CHS) provide evidence that is used to develop community-based health policy. This study aimed to assess the test-retest reliability of selected health behavioral items on the CHS according to item category, response period, and response scale. METHODS: A sample of 159 men and women 20 to 69 years of age participated in a test-retest with an interval of 14 to 21 days. A total of 28 items relating to smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and weight control, and mental health were selected. We evaluated the test-retest reliability of the items using kappa statistics. RESULTS: Kappa values ranged from 0.44 to 0.93. Items concerning habits had higher kappa values (mean, 0.7; standard error, 0.05) than items concerning awareness or attitudes (p=0.012). The kappa value of items with two- to four-point scales was 0.63, which was higher than the value of 0.59 for items with scales involving five or more points, although this ...
The prevalence of obesity in Thailand has been doubled in the past two decades. Data from three consecutive National Health examination surveys (NHES) have shown a secular trend, as the prevalence of obesity with body mass index ≥25 kg m−2 in adults increased from 13.0% in men and 23.2% in women in 1991 to 18.6% and 29.5% in 1997 and 22.4% and 34.3% in 2004 respectively. Obesity prevalence in children, using weight for height criteria, increased from 5.8% in 1997 to 7.9% in 2001 for the 2-5-year-olds and from 5.8% to 6.7% for the 6-12-year-olds. The data also show disproportionate increases of obesity in the rural area, which indicates the problem no longer restricts to the higher socioeconomic group. ...

Maintaining adequate staffing levels is crucial to the success of any field data collection study. However, for large national multi-year studies, like the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), staffing shortages on field interviewer teams are bound to happen due to attrition and planned or unplanned absences of local interviewers. When faced with these staffing issues, the NSDUH project employs a team of traveling field interviewers (TFIs) to help maintain high response rates and meet data collection deadlines.

NCI provided funding to field cancer control items on CHIS in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011-2012. The questions included in these survey years covered topics including cancer risk factors, cancer screening behaviors, and cancer diagnosis. The CHIS cancer control questions are comparable to the Cancer Control Supplement questions of the National Health Interview Survey. Data are reported for most counties and the largest cities in the state, and are therefore useful for estimating at the local level. Because racial and ethnic subpopulations are so well represented in California, CHIS enables investigators to better estimate health-related behaviors, use of health services, and cancer risk factors in these groups. Groups of particular interest include African-Americans, Latinos and Hispanics, American Indians and Alaska Natives, and Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders.. CHIS is led by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research ...
Our results suggest that the caste based social segregation is associated with mild, moderate and severe levels of anemia in India. These associations existed even after accounting for demographic factors including adult education and household wealth. Furthermore, stratification on adult education and household wealth, and using interaction on multiplicative scale for caste, the effect of adult education and household wealth did not differ among different castes.. A number of studies have investigated the caste related health disparities in India. Studies have linked scheduled castes and scheduled tribes with higher comorbidities [13], mortality [15], stunting and wasting in children [19], child mortality [20] and higher prevalence of childhood anemia [21]. Most studies were conducted on regional, small, convenience-based samples except a study by Van de Poel E et al.[19] which mainly focused on child stunting and wasting but not anemia. Study by Nayar KR, briefly reported the prevalence of ...
Introduction: Age-adjusted mortality rates for coronary heart disease (CHD) continue to decline. And there is increasing CHD prevalence resulting from improving survival from acute care and the movement of the epidemic into older age groups. However, trends in incidence and recurrence, most likely the result of primary and secondary prevention, are not well studied.. Hypothesis: Population trends in acute CHD incidence and recurrence are declining.. Methods: The Minnesota Heart Survey abstracted hospital admissions for patients age 30 -74 with acute coronary syndromes in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area (population 2.85 million) since 1985. The American Heart Association (AHA-2003) diagnostic algorithm was applied to patients with a discharge diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) (ICD-9 410) or unstable angina (ICD-9 411) to validate an AMI case. Cases were stratified into incident or recurrent based on hospital record review.. Results: From 1985 to 2001, 5932 cases were ...

Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the drivers of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use in the general population in Australia and to identify key policy implications. Data and methods: The National Health Survey 2007/2008, a representative survey of the Australian population, provides information on CAM use (practitioners and products) in the last 12 months. All adult respondents (N=15,779) aged 18 years or older are included in this study. Logistic regression is employed to determine the effect of socio-economic, condition-specific, health behavior variables, and private health insurance status on CAM use. Results: In addition to socio-economic variables known to affect CAM use, individuals who have a chronic condition, particularly a mental health condition, are more likely to use CAM. There does not appear to be a correlation between CAM use and more frequent General Practitioner use; however, ancillary private health insurance is correlated with a greater ...
Background:Of the estimated 130 million infants born each year worldwide, 4 million die in the first 28 days of life illustrating how neonatal mortality accounts for almost 40 percent of under-five child mortality, globally. The continued loss of infants within the first month of life results from a complex chain of socio-economic, biological and healthcare-related factors. We examined factors that may be associated with neonatal mortality in Zambia. Materials and Methods:Using a cross-sectional design, data were extracted from the 2007 ZDHS Womens Questionnaire for respondents aged 15-49 years in the selected households. Women who reported having given birth to live infants within the five years preceding the survey were included as the study population but only those infants who could have lived through the first month (28 days) were assessed. Results A total number of 6 435 live-born infants within the five years preceding the survey were extracted as the study population. Of these births, ...
