Our discussion brought me to the biggest question/interest of the day, which was, How are the people being served by this knowledge involved in the process? I did not get a good sense that they (patients and families) are, in general. For example, AcademyHealth, the professional society for health services researchers, doesnt have a patient/family advisory group.. Several innovative data/people applications were presented, including Asthmopolis, the Healthy Community Dashboard for Sonoma County, and Community Data Vital Signs for San Francisco.. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundations Project HealthDesign was mentioned and I think it is a good example of a health-services-researcher and patient-friendly approach, because it is looking at new types of data coming from patients, AND involving patients on study teams to help define whats important in remaking/changing the health system.. Overall, the group and discussion was very stimulating, and very welcoming to non-health services ...

The Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research Core helps researchers access and interpret the comprehensive database of the UW HIV Cohort Study.. The UW HIV Cohort is an ongoing observational study of HIV-infected patients who have received primary care in the UW Madison HIV Clinic and the UW Virology Clinic from January 1, 1995 to the present. Using a database (UW HIV Information System) integrating clinical data and banked specimens, the Core supports researchers requiring longitudinal HIV/AIDS patient information and expertise in clinical epidemiology and health services research.. The database can be used to identify patients for enrollment into interventional studies; for retrospective and prospective observational studies; and for basic and translational research. Cohort Study data can also help investigators assess study feasibility, prepare grant proposals, and conduct clinical research. Data commonly requested include laboratory results, diagnoses, medications, genotypic ...
BACKGROUND: Evidence from health services research (HSR) is currently thinly spread through many journals, making it difficult for health services researchers, managers and policy-makers to find research on clinical practice guidelines and the appropriateness, process, outcomes, cost and economics of health care services. We undertook to develop and test search terms to retrieve from the MEDLINE database HSR articles meeting minimum quality standards. METHODS: The retrieval performance of 7445 methodologic search terms and phrases in MEDLINE (the test) were compared with a hand search of the literature (the gold standard) for each issue of 68 journal titles for the year 2000 (a total of 25,936 articles). We determined sensitivity, specificity and precision (the positive predictive value) of the MEDLINE search strategies. RESULTS: A majority of the articles that were classified as outcome assessment, but fewer than half of those in the other categories, were considered methodologically acceptable ...
The Health and Health Services Research Fund (HHSRF) is dedicated to support research related to all aspects of health and health services in Hong Kong. We evaluated the funds outcomes and explored factors associated with the translation of research findings to changes in health policy and provider behaviour. A locally suitable questionnaire was developed based on the payback evaluation framework and was sent to principal investigators of the completed research projects supported by the fund since 1993. Research payback in six outcome areas was surveyed, namely knowledge production, use of research in the research system, use of research project findings in health system policy/decision making, application of the research findings through changed behaviour, factors influencing the utilization of research, and health/health service/economic benefits. Principal investigators of 178 of 205 (87%) completed research projects returned the questionnaire. Investigators reported research publications in 86

Linking computerized health insurance records with routinely collected survey data is becoming increasingly popular in health services research. However, if consent is not universal, the requirement of written informed consent may introduce a number of research biases. The participants of a national health survey in Taiwan were asked to have their questionnaire results linked to their national health insurance records. This study compares those who consented with those who refused. A national representative sample (n = 14,611 adults) of the general adult population aged 20 years or older who participated in the Taiwan National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and who provided complete survey information were used in this study. At the end of the survey, the respondents were asked if they would give permission to access their National Health Insurance records. Information given by the interviewees in the survey was used to analyze who was more likely to consent to linkage and who wasnt. Of the 14,611 NHIS
BACKGROUND: Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is a methodology created to address causal complexity in social sciences research by preserving the objectivity of quantitative data analysis without losing detail inherent in qualitative research. As many countries face primary care medical workforce shortages and find it difficult to provide timely and affordable care they seek to find new ways of delivering first point of contact health care through developing new service models. In common with other areas of rural and regional Australia, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is currently experiencing a general practitioner (GP) workforce shortage which impacts significantly on the ability of patients to access GP led primary care services. The introduction of a nurse led primary care Walk-in Centre in the ACT aimed to fulfill an unmet health care need in the community and meet projected demand for health care services as well as relieve pressure on the hospital system. Stakeholders have the potential to influence health service planning and policy, to advise on the potential of services to meet population health needs and to assess how acceptable health service innovation is to key stakeholder groups. This study aimed to ascertain the views
Inequality in access to health care is an important concern for health policy in developing countries. Because health status influences human capital acquisition, economic status and the inter-generational transmission of socio-economic status, access to care plays a role in determining and reinforcing other measures of inequality [1],[2]. These factors are particularly important in South Africa because the legacy of apartheid leaves non-whites in remote areas, which are potentially underserved [3],[4]. Public health services are often subsidized as a means to promote equitable access. In post-apartheid South Africa, the government has emphasized equity and made access to clinics the centerpiece of primary health care [3],[5],[6]. This makes it important to understand which members of the population actually benefit from these services and who is being left behind [1],[7].. Even when health services are provided free of charge, monetary and time costs of travel to a local clinic represent the ...

Equity in access to health care services is a central policy goal in most publicly funded health care systems. Access is a complex concept that can be understood as a fit between the demand for health care services among the population and the supply of care by providers. To be accessible, health care services need to be affordable, contain the appropriate forms of treatment in relation to medical needs and be physically situated so that patients can get to them [1, 2]. An important component of access is geographical accessibility, which can be understood as the distance, or travel time, between patients and health care providers. Equity in geographical accessibility in its simplest form can be understood as all citizens having a similar, or minimum, travel distance to the nearest health care provider [3].. Inequity in geographic access to health care is a well-known problem in many developing countries, where health care services are often underdeveloped, especially in rural areas, and ...

Health services research is the multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors affect access to health care and the quality and cost of health care. Since the 1960s, health services research has provided the foundation for progress, effectiveness, and value in health care. Ironically, at a time in which appreciation has never been higher for both the need and potential from health services research, the political and financial support for sustenance and growth appear to be weakening.. With funding support from AcademyHealth, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, American Board of Family Medicine, American Society of Anesthesiologists, Association of American Medical Colleges, Federation of American Hospitals, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this National Academy of Medicine special publication identifies the range of issues that health ...

Young children served by child welfare (CW) have very high rates of behavioral, mental health, and cognitive delays, yet these children are rarely connected to early childhood intervention (Cicchetti, & Curtis, 2005; Jonson- Reid, Drake et al, 2004; Leslie et al, 2005a). Parents served by CW are known to have a high rate of maternal depression (Leschied, Chiodo, Whitehead & Hurley, 2005; Wolfe, 1999). Among the CW parent population, however, drop-out from typical parenting programs is high (Chaffin, 2007) and participation in mental health services is low (Jonson-Reid, Drake, & Kohl, Under Review). Early Childhood Connections (ECC) is a novel service delivery system designed collaboratively by community agencies and the research team. Using a randomized design, this R34 tests ECCs ability to prevent child developmental delay and later mental health disorders, prevent recurrent maltreatment, and prevent or ameliorate maternal depression and stress in families with young children served by CW. ...
We also conduct trials and studies to measure how different interventions are used in care and how they affect outcomes. We want to know if they are working.. A burst of research in 2018 centered around mental health care. A study called SBI-tech Michigan, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, examined the effectiveness of technology-based screening and brief treatment for alcohol use in womens health and primary care clinics.. In addition, the team continues to lead the Zero Suicide Project, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. The ultimate goal is to prevent suicide attempts and deaths for individuals already receiving treatment at a healthcare system, says Ahmedani.. The Centers investigators, project and research coordinators, and data analysts also engage in policy research and policy analysis, evaluating policies that are considered or implemented at the state, federal and local level, to discover how those policies impact practice changes. The Center ...
The PIPS project will make a significant step forward in the processes for healthcare (HC) delivery to the European Public by means of creating a new Health and Life Knowledge and Services Support Environment. This will improve current HC delivery models while creating possibilities for HC professionals to get access to relevant-updated medical knowledge and the European citizens to choose healthier lifestyles. The objective is to encompass the entire set of business processes, professional practices, and products applied to the analysis and preservation of the citizens well-being using the latest innovations in ICT. The project joins HC suppliers, citizens, public organizations, food/drug industry and services, researchers, and health related policy makers, that are affected by the health status of individuals and the population, to create a dynamic knowledge environment that nourishes the system, and gives added value feedback for personalized and contextualized knowledge and services to ...

General objectives: The overall objective of HDP2 is to produce an internationally comparable hospital activity data set for Europe. Areas of comparability will be maximised by : 1. Using the OECD System of Health Accounts functional framework to define the activity to be included (and excluded) from the data set 2. Mapping the content of national activity data sets and basing data item definitions on what is commonly available. The feasibility of this approach was borne out in HDP1. HDP2 will extend the methodology 1. To new areas of hospital activity data 2. To new Members States 3. To new variables (e.g. to facilitate the monitoring of patient mobility, to facilitate subnational data anaysis). 4. Closely co-operate with other work being carried out in this area e.g. Eurostat development of minimum hospital data set, ECHI2, High Level Reflection Process on patient mobility. Strategic relevance and contribution to the public health programme: Health information strand. Improving information and ...
