In an influence-driven government like ours, it is the non-health care business sector that has the organization and leverage necessary to drive the health care changes America so desperately needs. The health care industry represents one dollar of every six dollars in the U.S. economy, but industries outside health care represent the other five. If American businesses, led by groups like the National Business Group on Health, the Pacific Business Group on Health, the Business Roundtable, the National Retail Federation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business were to advocate for the same policies in national health care reimbursement policy that their members are often implementing in their own on-site clinics, it would have a dramatically positive impact on the nations physical and economic health ...

Is Oncology Ground Zero For Reform?. By Brian Klepper. http://thedoctorweighsin.com/is-cost-of-cancer-care-ground-zero-for-reform/. A few weeks ago, the clinically positive results from the CLEOPATRA oncology trial were released, showing that pertuzumab, when added to docetaxel and trastuzumab as first line chemotherapy, produces an average survival benefit of 15.7 months in HER2 positive breast cancer patients.. That good news notwithstanding, the authors calculated that Genentechs price for adding pertuzumab to gain one Quality Adjusted Life Year is a breathtaking $713,219. In dry academic language, the authors dropped a bombshell conclusion. The addition of pertuzumab to a standard regimen … for treatment of metastatic HER2-overexpressing breast cancer is unlikely to provide reasonable value for money spent in the United States compared with other interventions generally deemed cost effective. This analysis highlights the economic challenges of extending life for patients with non-curable ...

Author(s): Tarun Khanna & Yishay Yafeh. 2007 Abstract: Diversified business groups, consisting of legally independent firms operating across diverse industries, are ubiquitous in emerging markets. Groups around the world share certain attributes but also vary substantially in structure, ownership, and other dimensions. This paper proposes a business group taxonomy, which is used to formulate hypotheses and present evidence about the reasons for the formation, prevalence, and evolution of groups in different environments. In interpreting the evidence, the authors pay particular attention to two aspects neglected in much of the literature: the circumstances under which groups emerge and the historical evidence on some of the questions addressed by recent studies. They argue that business groups are responses to different economic conditions and that, from a welfare standpoint, they can sometimes be paragons and, at other times, parasites. The authors conclude with an

She is currently leading two research projects at the Neurosurgery Spinal Clinic at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital with her co-investigators Professor Christopher Lind and A/Professor Helen Slater at Curtin University. The first study investigates the assessment of neuropathic pain and altered sensory nerve function in patients with lumbar radicular pain, using the method of quantitative sensory testing (QST) developed by the German Research Network on Neuropathic Pain. The assessment will assist in the diagnosis of nerve root damage and may help direct more targeted treatment for the underlying condition such as specific pharmaceutical intervention for the treatment of neuropathic pain or surgical intervention in the case of nerve root compromise. The second study aims to determine the predictive value of ...
Transient receptor potential channels are important mediators of thermal and mechanical stimuli and play an important role in neuropathic pain. The contribution of hereditary variants in the genes of transient receptor potential channels to neuropathic pain is unknown. On June 28, 2011, the County Council unanimously approved a limited amendment to the Clarksburg Master Plan that could lead to quicker establishment of a long overdue grocery store in the planning area. The amendment allows construction of a grocery store (and potential ancillary uses) outside the Clarksburg Town Center. The intent of the 1994 Clarksburg Master Plan was to place retail development, including a grocery store, in the Town Center. However, the staging plan ended up delaying construction of any grocery store in the area. For the elaboration of the Hydrogen Master Plan in Aragón 2016-2020, the strategic lines of work defined in the previous Plan 2011-2015 were reviewed first, counting for this task with the assessment of experts in each subject. Subsequently, an analysis of the state of the art of the main trends of the sector was carried out, defining and validating the new lines of work. Based on this previous analysis, five working groups were developed with 70 experts from 45 entities in which the different actions for each line of work were defined.. In Aragon, the fact of having a Hydrogen Master Plan has enable us to monitor the advance produced between 2007 and 2010 and between 2011 - 2015, as well as suggesting new aims for the next period 2016-2020.. The period of time covered by this new Master Plan, until 2020, is highly significant, given the essential role the technological development and the energy can play in the economic recovery. Additionally, in terms of hydrogen and fuel cells, there is ...

The Friends of Cherry Hinton Hall were represented by Bob Daines and Stuart Newbold, with other members and committee members amongst the public audience. Advocates of the City Farm, Andrew Varley, Rowan Lawrence and Ian Hoskin, were also present to press the case for an alteration in the Master Plan design so as to incorporate the farm idea. A nice touch too was hearing two children from the Spinney School tell the Committee how much theyd like a City Farm nearby to visit.. The Committee voted unanimously to approve the funding and works included in the Master Plan. Things will be split into two stages - Stage 1 is anything outside the former propagation centre footprint and will start immediately.. This paper presents a three-step process for developing legal interventions as well as observations and suggestions for how to think about legal innovation within the broader campaign for evidenced-based policy.. The authors describe the primary contemporary strategies researchers and research institutions use for inserting evidence into policy: 1) developing tools for credibly synthesizing evidence as it accumulates, and 2) adopting the individual and institutional practices (e.g., relationship building between researchers and policy-makers, funding for translation work, cooperative learning initiatives) that best promote the timely translation of research evidence into actionable, salient and available knowledge for policy actors.. They also discuss how to craft novel legal interventions for newly perceived problems by incorporating existing research knowledge using analytic tools and an understanding of the generic mechanisms through which law influences behavior and outcomes.. The American Urological Association (AUA) convened the Best Practice Policy Panel on Asymptomatic Microscopic Hematuria to formulate policy statements and recommendations for the evaluation of asymptomatic microhematuria in adults. The recommended definition of microscopic hematuria is three or more red blood cells per high-power microscopic field in urinary sediment from two of three properly collected urinalysis specimens. This definition accounts for some degree of hematuria in normal patients, as well as the intermittent nature of hematuria in patients with urologic malignancies. Asymptomatic microscopic hematuria has causes ranging from minor findings that do not require treatment to highly significant, life-threatening lesions. Therefore, the AUA recommends that an appropriate renal or urologic evaluation be performed in all patients with asymptomatic microscopic hematuria who are at risk for urologic disease or primary renal disease. At this time, there is no consensus on when to test for

Fuel cell-based hybrid electric vehicles are one of the most promising options to achieve zero-emission city buses. Efficient Energy Management (EM) plays a critical role to make such buses more efficient and practical. In this research, an available all-electric bus consisting of fuel cell (FC) and battery is considered and the efficiency of adding a Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) system to it is assessed. The proposed WPT system is only capable to receive energy in bus stations and use it to supply loads or charge the battery. To this end, the actual data of a city bus, its route and load profile were collected and utilized to ensure a realistic assessment. A full mathematical model of the energy system as well as the constraints governing the management issue is extracted and a Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) method is used to optimally manage the energy flows for the entire journey. The call, entitled Europe-USA Call Strengthening Transnational Research in Molecular Plant Sciences, will fund high quality collaborative transnational research in fundamental molecular plant science to meet the European and global demand for innovation in the area.. The call welcomes applications from collaborative research consortia in any area of molecular plant science. Like with the previous calls, four themes have been highlighted as areas of particular interest: Food and Nutrition Security, Non-Food Crops, Adaptation to a Changing Climate, and Biotic/Abiotic Stresses. Applications outside of these themes are also welcomed, where the research answers fundamental biological questions in molecular plant science. In addition, proposals can be submitted to a sub-call entitled Addressing Data Challenges in Plant Sciences.. Nine countries are contributing ...

Its good to see health care providers continue to work on strategies to reduce health care acquired infections. Handwashing is a key component -but hospitals struggle to achieve compliance and are now turning to patients to be the bad cop, much to my dismay.. A simple new strategy in intensive care units is showing promise: having doctors and nurses where gloves and gowns with all patients, not just those who are known to have antibiotic resistant bacteria. It takes more time and costs a bit of money, but seems to cut down dramatically on MRSA infections without generating adverse events. The study is important because some infectious disease specialists have advocated moving away from gowns and gloves in order to reduce patient isolation and improve satisfaction.. While the results are promising the implications are not so clear cut.. ...

Questions remain about the current plans, particularly in relation to the feasibility of financing such a vast project, but stakeholders say the project is necessary to take the pressure off highly populated downtown Yangon.. We need to relieve Yangons burden to boost the economy and to improve the living standards of citizens, Khine told OBG. It is an industrial-based project that will help create employment and business opportunities for local people, she said, adding that planners were keen to learn from previous projects.. Though NYDC is wholly owned by the Yangon regional government, the bulk - if not all - of the funding for the new city is expected to come from the private sector under a public-private partnership model, with private firms to make significant equity investments.. While reliance on private sector funding makes sense given the relatively limited spending power of the national and regional governments, it will be a challenge for NYDC to convince private companies to ...
The GameStop stock frenzy seemed like a flash-in-the-pan but then, last week, it was reinvigorated. What Lessons Found can business owners and CEOs gain from it?. was the week when a bunch of amateur traders made Wall Streets finest look like idiots. This is the opening sentence for one report on GameStops stock 500% runup. By now, we have all heard this tale and its consequences including billions lost; a rushed investment to save Robin Hood; Robin Hoods freezing trades of the stock and the call for congressional hearings. The resulting panic and lack of a coordinated response indicate that few considered the possibility of a social media driven stock run - let alone how to address it. But should regulators, Robin Hood, and hedge funds caught-short been better prepared? (more…). ...
National leaders have zeroed in on public-private partnership (PPP) deals as their vehicle of choice for building the infrastructure needed to power economic growth. The PPP structure is fairly new, and is often relied on by governments that do not want to incur large debts by borrowing the complete cost of a project. ISSUES: Indonesia has yet to see a PPP through to completion. Many rural areas of the country remain relatively underdeveloped, for example. Once you move outside of Java, there is no real industry and even less delivery of PPP projects, said Scott Younger, the president commissioner of Glendale Partners, a local consulting firm. Bureaucracy and insufficient preparation of regional governments remain as two of the major problems holding back delivery. Another challenge is that private firms often find it risky to enter a long-term partnership with a government whose leadership could change over an agreements lifetime. Despite these and other concerns, arguments for government ...
The Sentiment Analysis Community Group is a forum to promote sentiment analysis research. Topics addressed are:. -Definition of a Linked Data based vocabulary for emotion and sentiment analysis.. -Requirements beyond text-based analysis, i.e. emotion/sentiment analysis from images, video, social network analysis, etc.. -Clarifying requirements and the need for consensus as e.g. systems currently use widely varying features for describing polarity values (1-5, -2/-1/0/1/2, positive/neutral/negative, good/very good etc.).. -Marl and Onyx are vocabularies for emotion and sentiment analysis that can be taken as a starting point for discussion in the CG.. We provide a rationale for pyramidal ownership (the control of a firm through a chain of ownership relations) that departs from the traditional argument that pyramids arise to separate cash ow from voting rights. With a pyramidal structure, a family uses a firm it already controls to set up a new firm. This structure allows the family to 1) access the entire stock of retained earnings of the original firm, and 2) to share the new firm s non-diverted payoff with minority shareholders of the original firm. Thus, pyramids are attractive if external funds are costlier than internal funds, and if the family is expected to divert a large fraction of the new firm s payoff; conditions that hold in an environment with poor investor protection. The model can differentiate between pyramids and dual-class shares even in situations in which the same deviation from one share-one vote can be achieved with either method. Unlike the traditional argument, our model is consistent with recent empirical evidence that ...
I stand for a better transit system. I believe that we need to improve our transit system and that we require a comprehensive master plan for the HSR. A plan that will include all options including monorails like in Wuppertal, Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuppertal_Schwebebahn). If the master plan and the research point us to an LRT, then lets build it. I will not jump into a solution like the LRT or a BRT without having a plan. Many other projects in the past lacked of a master plan. The airport for example was a good idea, but was done aiming for passengers when Toronto Airport was under major renovations, thus the timing was not good. The Red Hill Creek Highway in the other hand was not designed taking in consideration heavy rains. We need to plan better our main projects ...
Whittier, California. Rose Hills, the largest cemetery in the United States, covers 1,400 acres at the Whittier location. The Master Plan for the 21st Century, encompassing 400 acres of undeveloped cemetery property in Sycamore Valley, was created to address current challenges and future opportunities in the unplanned areas of the Park.. The process of creating the Master Plan spanned a years time and was guided by 2 underlying principles: respect and collaborate with the significant existing landform and identify existing and future cemetery markets. To develop new ideas and concepts to expand the cemetery, WHITIN DESIGN WORKS hosted a series of interdisciplinary charette/brainstorming sessions. The information generated by different user groups in the charettes contributed significantly to the creation of the Master Plan. The charrettes addressed not only aesthetic, environmental and logistical issues but also cultural and psychological factors that influence peoples experience in the ...

Flies (Diptera) are a major component of world biodiversity and include tens of thousands of species important to agriculture as crop pests, biological control agents, pollinators, and nutrient recyclers. As part of an international research network on taxonomy and systematics of the hoverflies, family Syrphidae, I document the species and genetic diversity of hoverflies through their global ranges, refine their classification and explore their evolutionary and zoogeographical histories using the analytical tools and theoretical frameworks of modern systematics and phylogenetics.. New studies based on DNA sequence data and phylogenetic analysis have led to new insights on these flies biologies, their distributions and host ranges of the immature stages. The phylogeography of Merodon hoverflies in the Eastern Mediterranean area is studied under the POL-AEGIS project. The detailed classification of groups of hoverflies based on results from new molecular phylogenies is presently actively under ...
